Abstract: The solubility data is widely used in the separation and formulation process industry whereby the relativesolubility can aid in the separation of the compounds. With the product based approach in pharmaceutical sectorinvolving solubilities, a ready reference to calculate the solubility would be of much help. Hence this paper reports thetemperature dependency of solubility of common compounds in water, ethanol and methanol using the characteristicconstants of two equations.Key words: binary systems, solubility data, correlation constants.

1. IntroductionThe solubility data are a pre requisite in operationsinvolving a solute and a solvent which is normallyencountered in many separation operations and in theformulation industry (Drugs and pharmaceuticals andcosmetics). Collection of this data for the compoundsinvolved forms the basic step in design of thesesystems. Even though experimental data are the mostpreferred data for use, estimated values often forms thepreliminary set of data used. The extensive solubilitydata compilation by [1] can be used to find thesolubility at different temperatures. Some of the othersources of this information are IUPAC-NISTSolubility Data Series, [2] and [3]. But to get thevalues at interpolated temperatures, having an equationwill be of much help. Hence in this work, theexperimental binary salt solubility data are subjected todata fitting to identify the equations that better fit theexperimental data with least deviation and thecorresponding correlation constants are reported forcommonly used binary systems.

2. CorrelationThe experimental solubility data reported in Stephenand Stephen (1963) at different temperatures werestored in separate data files. A computer program was

developed for 10 different forms of correlations andthe data files were run through these 10 correlationsand the correlation that gave the least deviation wasselected for each liquid. It was found that a largenumber of systems fitted well with the following twocorrelations,S = A - B/(C+T) - (1)S = A + B*T + C* T2 - (2)

The characteristic correlation constants A, B and C foreach system were calculated by the least squaremethod using a C programme developed for thisapplication. The correlation constants for the binarysystems are presented in Table1. The averagepercentage deviation (APD) was calculated using theformula…APD = 1/n ∑│(Nexpt. – Ncorrel.) / Nexpt.│* 100 --- (3)

The average percentage deviations for the correlatedvalues from those of the calculated values are alsoprovided in Table 1. The water solubility of PotassiumIodide offered the least deviation (0.052 %) and themaximum deviation (6.889 %) is obtained for CalciumTartrate. 3. ConclusionWithin the given temperature range, Table 1 providesthe correlation constants for easy calculation ofsolubility of common substances in water, ethanol andmethanol systems. The average percentage deviationsare also provided for each system. The results of thiswork can save considerable time in calculating thesolubility of binary systems in the formulation andseparation industry.
