Delta held its 22nd Quality Diagnosis (QD22) conference from June 19th to 20th in Dongguan factory with 200 colleagues including top-level managements, heads of business units, and regional heads present. Compared to QD21 a half year ago, the diagnosis emphasis of QD22 was not only on continuous enhancement of machine automation and developing core technology, but also on the latest addition of the TBS (Time Between Stop) software function. TBS offers real-time measure-ment of equipment stability on the PQM (Production, Quality and Machine) intelligent software monitoring platform of a new MES. The improvement in hardware and software makes already installed single machines and whole production lines more effective. This article introduces Delta’s smart manufacturing from the software and hardware perspective of automation and IT.

ABOUT DSM

Since the beginning of the DSM project the automation team has followed an automation strategy of “maximizing the first-order process and simplifying the second-order process,” and has created a develop-ment system. This has included making an inventory of AI func-tions, measuring machine intelligence smart score sheets, to systematizing methods of developing the underlying technology of intelligent machines. However, for dealing with future Industry 4.0 production patterns of mass-customization, Delta Chairman Mr. Yancey Hai, believes that we shouldn’t develop automated machine just for automation, but that reasonable and flexible smart machine should be developed.

Ian Yang, Chief of Delta’s automation factory in Dongguan, also mentioned that in the past they often designed standalone customized equipment, so the structure of each piece of equipment is usually different. We use DSM’s 8 Smart Function to inspect the intelligence of machine, but there are still gaps in desired automation , which could be narrowed by the standardization and modularization of software program to control, product design and process design.

ABOUT DSM

Dr. Ziyu Zhu with DRC says, “The software is categorized for several levels, including front-end machines, intermediate DIALink, server end and even the software running for the future cloud. There are modularization problems on each level. If the tools and environment for software development can be shared in the future and the operation module and algorithm can be developed parallelly on the same software runtime platform (including the machine, intermediate DIALink, server end and Cloud), the sharing of modules will be more convenient. The functions and algorithms applied on the machines can also achieve dynamic change and enhancement.”

The SIS (Smart Information System) on which the DRC cooperates with the plant in Wujiang adopts a modular software design. The system can integrate front-end PLM/PIM parameters, simulate the operation program of equipment and machines under a virtual environment and then run it on the production line machines by means of the manufacturing execution system (MES). The data run on the production line is collected from equipment with different communication protocols by means of DIALink and then sent back to the SIS system for big data analysis and to perform real-time dynamic correction and realize the smart production mode of virtual reality integration. The intelligent pivot is the MES.

Dr. Ziyu Zhu of the DRC shares the architecture and planning of software modularization

The automation factory imports the concept of design standardization and modularization by means of promoting DSM. In terms of hardware, the modularization of transport, mechanical arms, stock feeding and other mechanical structures and the standardization of mechanism elements and electric control architecture are included. Concerning software, the factory cooperates with DRC to intro-duce modular UI interfaces and functions and standardized audit and release mechanisms. It is expected that future designs can be developed and applied rapidly and flexibly.

With flexibility as the goal, software and hardware integration has greater possibilities

ABOUT DSM

Digital transformation connects Cloud manufacturing

Actually, before DSM was imported, Delta’s IT team had already cooperated closely with plants to integrate the MES of each plant and lay the groundwork for future plant upgrades. IT also played an important role in DSM development. The intelligence of the decision management level, transmission level and control level is greatly improved from developing the front-end PQM of the production line, such as the monitoring improvement of production schedule, product quality, equipment failure, equipment suspension and material shortage, to the deployment of the information flow in series and wired/wireless networks. While PLM, MES, ERP, WMS and other IT systems will be combined at the rear end to develop the four smart logistics modules of smart sales, production, procurement and warehouse, and seamlessly connect the intelligent production lines in series to achieve the goal of end-to-end smart factory.

PQM intelligent software monitoring platform of the SMT model line at the No. 5 Plant in Dongguan presents real-time production capacity and equipment monitoring data

The traditional MES design focuses mainly on management demand for mass production mode, so the function is only restricted to data collection and report analysis. However, to cope with the flexible production of the future Industry 4.0, MES is at the intelligent core of whole-plant automation control. Simon Chang, Chief Operating Officer of Delta, pointed out at QD22 that future intelligent production modes cannot use the existing architecture, but must use IT and digitalization to change the system. All production lines must go through MES connection as to rationalize, standardize and improve quality.

With the development of electronic products towards high-end and minia-turization, PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturers are speeding up their development of a thinner and lighter flexible printed circuit (FPC) with higher density. Due to the cost consideration and low prevalence of automation technology in the past, this work is largely done by humans, resulting in the product qualification ratio not being high enough, poor quality stability and other issues. One PCB manufacturer chose Delta SCARA industrial robot station solution to replace the traditional human labor, carrying out the tasks of mounting and peeling film on FPC. This effectively lowered the defective rate, increased the product quality, and also increased the production efficiency.

Delta provided multiple sets of robot station solutions based on the process characteristics of FCB production. Each set of solutions is made up of three Delta SCARA industrial robot DRS40L series, IO adapter board, HMI, light source and others. Among which, the Delta SCARA industrial robots are the core of the solutions. SCARA industrial robot DRS40L series delivers outstanding performance functions in terms of speed, precision, linearity and squareness, providing compliance control functions without sensors, to adapt to deviation in FPC in electronics manufacturing, and to quickly and precisely complete the surface mounting. By adopting a SCARA industrial robot integration solution provided by Delta, which uses robots to take the place of human operations by saving labor of eight people in a service mounting device for the manufacturer while significantly improving the product qualification ratio.

Delta has announced the successful completion of a project that included installing UPS in the MEGA shopping center and on the premises of Iset Tower in Yekaterinburg. Both projects were implemented by Spectrum RS, the official distributor for Delta, along with a partner company.

The project of the MEGA shopping center was primarily aimed at ensuring the continuous operation of the fire protection system. This is one of the critical systems in a large facility which is designed to host a large number of visitors. Thus, five Modulon NH Plus Series UPS with a capacity of 120kVA were installed to provide the system with an UPS. The modular design means trouble-free maintenance and easy expansion. Other distinctive features of NH Plus UPS include a hot-swap modular structure that allows replacing power modules without breaks in power supply, redundancy at the module and system levels, as well as a built-in maintenance and static bypass switch. Installation of this UPS allows operation in battery mode for one hour, which is enough for the emergency evacuation of customers and staff of the shopping mall.

In addition to that, the project also implied provision of uninterruptible power supply to the travelators of the shopping centre. For this purpose, the company installed six three-phase Ultron HPH series UPS with a capacity from 30 to 40kVA. These double-conversion UPS have a low harmonic distortion factor and high efficiency, which reaches 96% in AC-AC conversion mode, and 99% in eco mode. The reliability of the system is increased due to N+X redundancy, whereas a wide input voltage range allows the UPS to operate in harsh electrical environments and extends battery life. After the installation of this system, the backup runtime of the travelators reached 20 minutes. This will allow MEGA’s customers to use the travelators even during breaks in power supply in the shopping centre.

The main goal of the Iset Tower project was to ensure uninterrupted power supply of the security systems of the “smart building”. In order to do this, specialists from Spectrum RS chose six three-phase Modulon NH Plus UPS devices with an operating power of 120kVA made by Delta. The modular architecture of these UPSs ensures easy maintenance and high scalability. A parallel N+X redundancy configuration makes the devices reliable and universal. Another distinctive feature of Modulon NH Plus is the minimal recovery time. In the future the customer is planning to expand the system by 400%.

Pavel Nagayev, Head of the Sales Department at Spectrum RS said: “We took up the objective of providing uninterrupted power supply for such a large facility very responsibly. We realized that life and health of the residents may depend on the correct and reliable working of the security systems, and the level of efficiency of the “smart building’s” systems will be determining people’s comfort. In order to meet our objective, we chose the NH Plus UPS by Delta, which has really high safety. In addition, the company produces premium-class solutions, but offers an optimal quality-to-price ratio. Another important aspect was the fact that the company provides high-quality maintenance service to its customers at all stages of project implementation. Also, we were able to reach maximum effectiveness in implementing this solution with the help of the information we received at the trainings that Delta regularly organizes for its partners and customers, both at their own training center in Moscow and during external seminars in the regions.”

IABG Italy charity eventText by Delta EMEA

Delta IABG Italy team got a great opportunity to carry out a special project: a non-conventional charity dinner. The event took place on May 10th not far from Milan.

The particular environment was a professional cooking school, where students are trained to cook healthy food and serve it to guests at that very moment. They were guided by a popular chef, Davide Maffioli, and the recipes were provided by a very famous cook and food specialist, Dr. Marco Bianchi.

What was Delta team doing, apart from enjoying the yummy food? Delta committed to offer the ingredients to be cooked with and the team would support during the whole event and sponsor and advertise in the weeks before.

It’s been a very tough job but the event was absolutely successful. We had 180 guests who enjoyed the dinner and donated generously to a great non-profit organization named T’INCONTRO. T’INCONTRO is very well known in the area and works in the Filippo del Ponte Children Hospital in Varese to support in particular the premature born babies and their families. They collect money to buy new equipment which can help those little babies to survive and support projects such as musicothera-phy and psychological counseling to babies and their families. We are proud to having supported T’INCONTRO in their good job and to having had such a great result in 2017 charity event.

With increasingly faster adoption of information infrastructure, high schools of all localities have been implementing integration of information resources and business applications for their campuses. The electronic administration of these schools have an urgent need of integrating their various types of IT system currently-available and rapidly expanding with new application systems. Recently, a high school in Jiangsu Province selected Delta's MDC (Micro Datacenter) series micro-module datacenter for its new e-administration data center.

Most of these data centers are small-size ones built with conventionally separated procurement approaches that often lack planning and standardized construction. To avoid imperfection in the past for the planning of the datacenter, the newly-built e-administration data center needed a solution that features a highly-integrated system with excellent expandability. The two 20Kva MDC series data centers echo to the user's need for small

data centers. With core one-body power supply and monitoring system, rack system, and refrigeration system all integrated in one platform, the new solution features flexibility and ease in construction, as well as smart and easy management, offering users a perfect solution that enjoys high cost-effectiveness and high usability. For possible needs of expansion in the future, the series also support possible expansion on demand. The major software functions of power management, user management, and environment monitoring provided by the solution also reflect the needs of many industry users in realizing reliable monitoring and smart management.

Life at Delta in such a diversified region with so many different cultures is very dynamic and challenging but that exactly is inspiring me to take opportunities, expand my knowledge and broaden my experiences.

In Delta Family we have an open minded international culture that respects the differences and take these as a driver for innovation and growth. In EMEA we have a great team spirit that brings together the ideas of people from different nations every day and we enjoy working together with Delta colleagues from all over the world.

At Delta in EMEA we actively live our Group mission. In 2016 Delta bought the previously rented Headquarters building in Hoofddorp and transformed it into a Green Building incorporating Delta’s energy efficient solutions. Today, the total energy consumption of our EMEA Headquarter is reduced by more than 40%.

The EMEA region contains more countries than any other region and arguably covers the most ethnically diverse people groups speaking over 2,000 native languages, though a large percent of the region could at least understand English, German, French, Arabic, or Russian.

I joint our location in Teningen, Germany in the year 1993 and developed my professional life from being the first marketer in an engineering driven company for “custom designed power supplies” further to develop the global brand for our Delta solar inverter business and today coordinate the marketing activities for Delta Brand in our region.

Arnoud de Bok / Product Manager AC Motor Drives IABG / DEN Eindhoven

My name is Arnoud de Bok and I joined Delta in Sep. 2002 (nearly 15 years ago).

I started in the Venlo office in a team of 4 colleagues and was responsible for the support to customers for AC Motor Drives, which consisted at that time of 4 series. In 2005 we moved to Eindhoven and in 2013 we moved to our present office. In the Eindhoven office we take care of IABG sales and support for EMEA. Also a few sales people from FMBG are based here.

The team for IABG products has grown to >70 people over these years, many of them working in their own country from either a Delta office or from home office. In the beginning we only sold drives in Europe to about 10 distributors, right now we sell all IABG products (AC Motor Drives and cabinet solutions, Servo drives and motors, PLC’s, HMI’s, Internet switches, CNC, Gearboxes, Power Quality solutions, Power supplies, etc. with software, cables, options, etc.) in all EMEA countries. Of course also the sales turnover has grown tremendously.

My job is still supporting customers by answering technical questions and taking care of RMA for drives and in the meantime also for Industrial power supplies. I’m glad our technical team has vastly expanded. It would be just impossible to cover all current 14 AC Motor Drive series by one person. Also the technology has changed, nowadays connectivity to all kinds of industrial networks and the Internet (IoT) is required, whereby all our products must be able to “talk” to each other. It makes the support more difficult but also more challenging.

I like working for Delta because it’s a global company that is doing well. Travelling is required of course and that gives me the opportunity to see many countries and cities when visiting customers, colleagues and exhibitions. Delta in Europe is really an “East meets West” experience with many colleagues from Taiwan/China and daily contact with Taiwan.

The cultural differences are not always easy but certainly very interesting, even the way engineering is done.

I love Taiwanese food, also an advantage of working for Delta. My wife and I have a small private dining company; we cook for groups by appointment so we like experiencing food everywhere we go.

Timur Semash / Marketing Assistant of Power Electronics / EMEA

My story at Delta began on February 8th, 2016, when I started as a Marketing Research Intern in the Delta Power Electronics team. During the first week I was already involved in the Delta EMEA Headquarters’ renovation process. Looking back it was an impossible dream, which came true on 18th of April, 2017, the Delta Building Inauguration day, which is an incredible achievement for the entire Delta EMEA team.

Personally, I feel that I was and I am a part of the bright future, where Smart Building will play an essential role for humanity and the environment of our mother Earth. Today, I work already 7 months as a full time employee of Delta and I am happy here. During my first 8 month period I managed to write and successfully defend my Bachelor Thesis at Delta on topic “Market entry strategy for European industrial robotics power supply market”. Moreover, by being an intern at first, it gave me room for constant self-improvement and learning about specific products such as Industrial Power Supplies. Being a recent graduate with a business administration degree makes it more challenging while investigating different markets and industries where Delta products can fit. But, I like healthy challenges which motivate me to expand my limits by doing a small extra mile every day.

My practical experiences during the past 6 months as an employee allowed me to deepen my understanding of Delta product family and meet many other colleagues from all over the world. Currently, I am responsible for marketing activities of the entire Power Electronics division which includes: fans & thermal management solutions, various embedded power supplies and the electronic components businesses. One of the main activities is the market research where new business opportunities can be found within different industries and where Delta can grow and develop. In addition, B2B marketing requires a lot of team effort and cooperation once certain activities, such as exhibitions, are executed. During the latest huge Industrial, Electronics and Retail exhibitions Hannover Messe, Electronica, EuroShop respectively, Delta showcased the entire business portfolio related to industrial, automotive, home appliance and telecom sectors, where most of our Power Electronics products were well placed and had success. At those events I had the opportunity to meet many different colleagues and learn about different business divisions: Industrial Automation products as well as Energy storage and EV charging technologies provided by Delta. Besides, the international setting and very sustainability consciousness culture make working at Delta fun, there is always something new to learn and develop within a company and yourself.

Therefore, Delta’s sign “Δ” of constant change is real and makes a difference. As a result, I am proud to be a part of the company which is aiming to change the world and invest in its future.

With an open mind and lion’s heart I am looking forward to a very next day at Delta.

Delta Controls is pleased to announce that our Wireless enteliZONE Network Sensor (eZNTW) was selected by Buildings magazine as a “2017 Money-Saving Product.”

About the eZNTW

Most thermostats are focused on controlling the equipment in your ceiling or on your roof. The enteliZONE Network Thermostat (eZNTW) goes beyond that, focusing on controlling the equipment in your space as well. Through Wi-Fi and EnOcean wireless communication, the eZNTW acts as a gateway for incorporating the latest building systems technologies. Add wireless lighting control, daylighting features, extra heating, or anything else your space needs.

The eZNTW has a programmable, backlit display. It communicates critical information from across the room using color. This makes it ideal for critical facility spaces such as the ones found in hospitals. Quickly alert OR staff if room conditions don’t match the procedure being performed. Use flashing colors to report critical temperature variations in data centers. Use color codes to help alert students and staff in schools of emergency situations.

The eZNTW provides a number of preset button layouts, but custom layouts and functions can be selected, giving unprecedented flexibility for room control. At the touch of a button, a hotel can employ custom scene control, or a boardroom can be placed in “presentation mode.” In addition to these enhanced experience options, an ECO Mode button allows set points to be relaxed in order to save on energy use and utility costs.

How does the eZNTW help save money?

The eZNTW directly incorporates devices into your network without the need for additional gateways or networks. Reduced installation and troubleshooting costs encourage building owners to take advantage of money-saving opportunities. An integrated daylighting strategy can reduce electrical lighting costs for a facility by 20% – 80% . The low cost of sensor integration and daylighting with the eZNTW makes it ideal for energy saving retrofit strategies. Additional lighting sensors, occupancy detection and equipment control can all be added with less cost. The eZNTW can reside on IT networks, further reducing infrastructure costs for installation in projects where conventional networking can be difficult, such as those incorporating exposed timber or concrete structures, and in all types of retrofit.

If Po-lin Chi let everyone see Taiwan, Delta let everyone see Po-lin Chi.

Origin

In 2011, Albert Chang, General Manager of ESBG and Board Director of Delta and Delta Foundation, first met Po-lin Chi in a party. Because of busy schedule, Albert Chang did not attend the activities very often, but on that day he happened to attend the speech by Po-lin Chi. Albert Chang described it as a wonderful opportunity, this was the start of his friendship with Po-lin Chi, and also an important turning point of Beyond Beauty - Taiwan from Above.

Po-lin Chi, who was not well known then, tried to raise people’s awareness of environmental protection full of enthusiasm with photos of Taiwan, in his speech he showed his sincere feelings towards Taiwan’s land and his persistence to environmental protection. After the end of the speech, the audience stood up and applauded for a long time. Afterwards, Albert Chang knew that that speech was significant to Po-lin Chi who was still raising funds to shoot the film.

Matching ideas, full Support

“His idea completely matches that of Delta.” After learning more about the details of the film shooting, Albert Chang thought that Po-lin Chi’s idea of using aerial images to guard our homeland and treat the land well fits well Delta’s corporate mission of “to provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow”, then pondered immediately how to help him. On the next day he took back Po-lin Chi’s idea to Delta for internal discussion. In fact, Bruce had seen Po-lin Chi’s works, although he appreciated them very much, he feared that Po-lin Chi’s pressure was too big with the transformation from interest to profession, so he hesitated on whether to give assistance, but later he heard that Po-lin Chi had quitted his public employ-ment with single-hearted devotion to aerial photography, and that he had pledged his house as security to buy equipment, Bruce decided to try his best to support Po-lin Chi with NTD30 million sponsorship.

That was the first sponsorship from the enterprise, it was like streams in the desert to Po-lin Chi who was getting into troubles in fund raising, so that the shooting plan of Beyond Beauty - Taiwan from Above could officially kick-off. With Delta’s endorsement, many enterprises followed up, and with Po-lin Chi’s passion and courage, a positive effect was triggered, so that the public could have a chance to see the beauty and sadness of the land of Taiwan from different perspectives.

The premiere of Invitation from the Sky, the Japanese version of Beyond Beauty - Taiwan from Above moved many audiences in Japan, Director Po-lin Chi (third from the left) thanked Delta for that more people could see the film

Building consensus with new perspectives

When recalling Po-lin Chi’s records of Taiwan, Albert Chang’s feelings showed between the lines. Just like the exclusive aerial photographer of Taiwan, Po-lin Chi had deep feelings for every inch of the land, “Many places are like his old friends, what they looked like before, and what they have become now, he can tell you many stories.” Po-lin Chi expressed his concern for the environment through the lens, “The first thing that he does after getting up every day is to watch the weather. Sometimes the family go on a sightseeing tour, when he finds that the visibility is very good, he will immediately return home and rush to the hangar to get ready to take off.” It is this drive and passion that have let people who have seen Po-lin Chi’s works feel touched.

“He lets you feel and introspect yourself not through the way of criticism but through images.” When seeing the tremendous responses after the film was on, Albert Chang thought that the most valuable thing was that its influence crossed generations, parties and industries, consensus was built through another point of view and horizon, and people’s awareness of environmental protection was aroused. Besides full support of the publicity activities of the film, assistance in holding exhibitions and booking a whole cinema to invite customers to see the film, Delta brought the film of Beyond Beauty - Taiwan from Above to Japan, Thailand, and even COP21 in Paris, hoping that more friends at home and abroad could know Taiwan better so as to trigger more responses to environmental protection and sustainability.

See the Hope from the Endless Yearning

Po-lin Chi’s footsteps never stopped. The cross-border shooting plan of Beyond Beauty - Taiwan from Above II officially started in June this year, Delta expressed its support at the first time. Albert Chang sent a text message to encourage Po-lin Chi, and immediately received the beautiful scenery of the East Coast taken from the sky on that day. However, one could never expect that only dozens of minutes later the team suffered a helicopter crash. Looking at unread messages, Albert Chang’s eyes were moist.

To recall the old friend, Albert Chang went to the Songshan Tobacco Factory to see Po-lin Chi’s photography show three times, and wrote down what he felt:

We believe that the power of cohesiveness will not disappear because of Po-lin Chi’s leaving, but with our perpetual remembrance, we will continue to move forward on the way of environmental protection.

!The third time when I went to the exhibition of Po-lin Chi, I took my daughter with me, lined up in a long queue, and moved with the crowd of people slowly, there were a large number of young people; this made me see the hope of Taiwan.

Queuing up bored me most in my life, but this 40 minutes’ waiting was what I was most willing and quite content to do, I waited patiently with children, young, middle-aged, and elderly people, I saw the uncommon from the common, and even more expected to see more hopeful skylight in Taiwan.

I had different observations when I came to the show each time, the crowds of people today moved slowly and orderly, there was no impatience in the 40 minutes’ waiting, and people had certain consideration in what they wore.

Each area of the exhibition were focused people, of course one could also catch a glimpse of persons secretly wiping away tears; what made me feel relieved even more was that I saw many young parents watching the show with their children from kindergartens, primary schools or junior high schools.

On the video wall around the corner, which were shot at different altitudes, some little ones sat on the floor, watching quietly and attentively; this scene was so shock-ing and touching – these hopeful and kind seedlings were growing quietly.

In recent years, in the adult world there have been many puzzles and regrets; but from the expression in children’s eyes today, I can see infinite light and hope!

God Bless Taiwan!

Trump’s Paris Exit launchesthe era of carbon reductionText by Evan Kao / Program Director, Delta Electronics Foundation

“We Are Still In” declares in an open letter, listing the various U.S. units that continue to follow the Paris Agreement

U.S. President Trump announces withdrawal from the Paris Agreement

Faces international condemnation, even from US-based enterprises

As expected, Trump’s Paris Exit immediately drew international condemnation.

“U.S. President has made a wrong decision for the interest of his citizens and the future of the earth”. Despite Trump saying that there is a possibility of U.S. returning to the negotiation of the climate agree-ment, French President Emmanuel Macron said amending Paris Agreement for Trump is impossible. U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May also expressed disappointment, saying that “the Paris Agreement provides a good solution for resolving the issues of climate change, and we will continue to adhere to it.”

Though Trump believes that withdrawing from the Paris Agreement benefits U.S. economy, many U.S. enterprises think otherwise. Nike, industrial-leading sports brand, responded with an open statement, “We are deeply disappointed with the government’s shift in climate policy. The world will need to radically redesign industrial system in order to enable a low-carbon growth economy.” Leading oil company, Shell, also strongly supports the Paris Agreement, saying that “climate change is not the responsibility of a single country or individual. In the future, we shall continue to strive to provide more clean energy.” Business leaders including Elon Musk, CEO of leading electric car company, Tesla, and Disney CEO, Robert Iger, also decided to leave the government advisory councils as a form of protest.

On the evening of May 31st, as the rumor of power shortage lingers in Taiwan, and the hot summer approaches, came a piece of shocking news from the other end of the Pacific Ocean - U.S. President Trump announced exit from the Paris Agreement.

The news was first released by social media Axios, stating that Trump has decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, after which, mainstream media such as CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg and The Guardian follow suit. The following day (June 1st), Trump officially launched a press conference and announced on the White-house’s green lawn, “The Paris Agreement will hurt US economy; it is an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries. That's not going to happen while I’m President”.

Within a short period of time, numerous pessimistic predictions regarding Trump’s Paris Exit continue to arise. Some predict the exit of the U.S., the world’s largest economy and the second largest emitter of carbon dioxide, may cause domino effect where other countries follow suit. Some think it will affect fund-ing. As the U.S. is the biggest funder to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), its exit will strongly affect the source of research funding against global warming. Some even pessimistically believe that once the U.S. is out of the game, it will be impossible to keep the global temperature rise within 2℃ according to the Paris Agreement, and the temperature may even shoot up to 3℃ more than that in the pre-industrial revolution.

However, Delta Electronics Foundation, which has been following closely on the international climate nego-tiations for more than a decade, believes that though there is impact from Trump’s Paris Exit, its magnitude is not as huge as expected.

China, India and Europe lead cities and businesses in continuing the mission of carbon reduction

First of all, the U.S. no longer dominates the competitive arena of global climate movement.

Many pessimists believe without the U.S., who used to hold a leading position in the world, the future of the Paris Agreement might be the same as its predecessor, Kyoto Protocol, which was established in 1997. With only a few countries willing to execute it faithfully, the Agreement will find it difficult to drive the trend of carbon reduction. Surprisingly, the Paris Agreement is the fastest international environmental protection convention ever to achieve the threshold for entry into force. Late last year, Trump’s election victory was during the 22nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP22), but countries such as Australia and the UK still approve the Paris Agreement successively. Looking at it now, except Syria and Nicaragua, almost all other members of the United Nations support the Agreement, and almost all have proposed their INDC plan.

Despite Trump’s arbitrary actions, emerging economies led by China and India, together with EU, the pioneer of climate movement promotion, could still work together to fill up the leadership vacancy left by the U.S., and continue to lead the world towards low carbon transformation. According to EU Commissioner for Climate Action & Energy, Miguel Arias Canete, despite the U.S. abandonment, main member countries such as EU and China will continue to adhere to the carbon reduction commitment.

Secondly, since the establishment of UNFCCC 25 years ago, the launch of carbon reduction movement has gradually shifted form political organizations such as nations and political parties, to private organizations such as local agencies, businesses and communities. As of the end of 2016, more than 2,500 cities and 2,100 businesses in the world have proposed climate response plans, showing greater ambition than their central governments, which unleashes the power of “surrounding the central government with local organizations” and the “bottom-up approach”. It is just like what CEO of General Electric (GE), Jeffrey Immelt said, “Industry must take the lead now and stop relying on the government.”

The day before Trump’s announcement, Bill de Blasio, mayor of the U.S. largest city, New York City, publicly urged that the cities shall assume the responsibilities of defending against climate change for the country in the future, so as not to become a laughing stock to others. Many governors and city mayors also express their support. For example, states such as New York, California and Washington formed the United States Climate Alliance, while 68 cities joined the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda. Michael Bloomberg, another political leader of the Republican Party, even set up “We Are Still In” website, listing state governments, cities, universi-ties, businesses, investment institutions, etc. who are willing to continue to adhere to carbon reduction commit-ment, which proves that the U.S. society has not given up on themselves as a result of Trump’s Paris Exit.

Despite the fact that the federal government has become a deserter of the Paris Agreement, more enterprises and local governments are taking up the huge responsibilities of climate movement. “I’m confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and help protect for future generations the one planet we’ve got”, said former U.S. President Obama, who approved the Paris Agreement during his term.

Reversal in 2020, U.S. civilian power will fight back

Lastly, do not underestimate the rebound power of the U.S. society.

Trump, the maniac leader with inflammatory remarks, is actually the outcome of the U.S. election system, which allows his extreme claims to gain quite substantial public support. However, the election system comes with a term. The earliest date for U.S. to be fully withdrawn from the Paris Agreement is 2019, when the next election will be held, which makes the public even more critically scrutinize the results of Trump’s promises. For example, one of his promises that won him the election was getting back the mining jobs. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there had been a sharp decline by 40% in the U.S. coal mining jobs in the past seven years (March 2009 to March 2016). Instead, job opportunities for natural gas and renewable energy continue to grow. In the next 4 years of his term, 40 coal-fired power plants will be closed successively throughout the U.S., which shows that he is unable to turn the trend around simply with his own effort. When Trump’s promises are broken, will he still wins the people’s support in the next election?

Most surprisingly, the kickback of Trump’s Paris Exit has become a great help in integrating the power of the U.S. private sector and social consensus. At present, among the forces that try to continue to lead the U.S. towards green transformation, former New York City mayor, Bloomberg, has attracted the most attention. During his term as the mayor, New York City’s carbon emission reduced drastically by 19% from 2005 to 2013.

Bloomberg, a 75-year-old Republican, is a magnate turned politician just like Trump. However, the two have very different views on climate change. The former United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, co-wrote a book, “Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet”, with Carl Pope, the former executive director of the environmental group, Sierra Club. “From the Ashes”, a coal documentary sponsored by his charitable organization, was also aired on National Geographic Channel in 171 countries.

Pope, the co-author of “Climate of Hope”, emphasized that in the past few years, with the effort of businesses and private organizations, the U.S. has in fact reached about 2/3 of the 2025 carbon reduction target (26% to 28% lower than 2005) set for the Paris Agreement. “Climate change is a result of many factors. Instead of being afraid or complain-ing, why don’t we break down the problem and find a solution.”

With Bloomberg’s advocacy and connection, it shows that the U.S. still has positive forces from many supporters in the fight against global warming. Secondly, it also shows that there are still political leaders among the Republicans willing to admit the scientific fact of climate change. When Trump decided to withdraw all donations towards UNFCC and Green Climate Fund, Bloomberg who has a stronger financial background than Trump, pledged to donate USD 15 million through his foundation, “Ameri-can’s Pledge”, to fill in a portion of the funding gap. “The U.S. does not need Washington D.C. (where White House is located) to abide by the Paris Agreement commitment, and the people will not let the decision of Washington D.C. stop them”, Bloomberg said confidently.

After nearly half a month, despite the continuous commotion after Trump’s Paris Exit, it has now become a force in consolidating the U.S. society consensus and uniting the nations instead, which Trump may not even expect.

Bloomberg’s (right) new book, “Climate of Hope”, has injected hope to the U.S. society after Trump’s Paris Exit

Record of Delta Participating in theForum Featuring Thomas L. FriedmanText by Evan Kao / Delta Electronics Foundation

Thomas L. Friedman, the three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, held the forum in Taiwan and took the audience by storm

The world is not only hot, flat, and crowded, but it is also changing rapidly.

Thomas L. Friedman, columnist for The New York Times and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, visited Taiwan after 7 years since 2010. Near 1500 people swarmed into the Multi-Purpose Auditorium of New Taipei City Government for the forum on June 22, 2017. The guests including former president Ying-Jeou Ma, former premier Chao-shiuan Liu, and New Taipei City Mayor Eric Liluan Chu attended the forum to discuss the ways to respond to the rapidly changing world. Delta’s Founder, Bruce Cheng, was invited to give a brief speech and had a dialogue with Friedman on stage.

In the opening, Charles Kao, the forum organizer and the founder of Global Views-Commonwealth Publishing Group, stated that he knew three economists called Friedman. The first is Milton Friedman who is known for his classical liberalism. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1976, his famous saying is “There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.” The second is Benjamin Friedman who is the leader in Monetary Finance. The third is Thomas L. Friedman who is an American journalist and an economist for the human beings. In his new book, Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations, he analyzed the world’s three biggest forces – Market, Mother Nature, and Moore’s Law that are affecting the world now. The book has taken the readers by storm since the moment it was published.

Trend Master: Learn the intelligence to adapt from Mother Nature

As analyzed by Friedman who came on the stage later, the digital world is coming really fast as motivated by globalization, climate change, and technology. He believed the year 2007 was a turning point. In 2007, the first generation iPhone introduced the mobile computing era. With other breakthrough innovations such as Facebook and Airbnb launched in the world, our individual ability was enlarged. The President can communicate with the world in his bedroom using Twitter, a civilian can spark a wave of revolution, a robot can learn different skills, and a car can drive automatically by itself.

The three biggest forces not only interact with each other and affect the world, they also make many people feel confused, disturbed, and anxious. Friedman pointed out this is because the speed of technology innova-tion is faster than the speed the human beings adapt to changes. For this, “learning to learn smarter” is the best solution. For example, a lot of people are afraid of being replaced by AI and losing income. In fact, if we apply it appropriately, we can convert AI into IA, turning technology into intelligence assistance, intelli-gence assistants, and intelligence algorithm that can help the human beings.

Delta’s Founder, Bruce Cheng, was invited to give a brief speech and had a dialogue with Thomas L. Friedman

Speaking of climate change, Friedman emphasized that there is no system more powerful than Mother Nature with her 3.7 billion years of history. When facing the changes and evolutions on Earth, Mother Nature has its own strong healing ability and adaption mechanism. If he interviewed Mother Nature, he supposed her answer would be “I allow species to compete with each other and I believe in natural selection and the value of diversity; I think no resources should be wasted and in the face of changes, people should keep on trying until they find the most appropriate solution.”

Expert’s Viewpoint: The “Black Elephant” urges people to take actions

During the communication time after Friedman’s speech, experts from the technology, finance, and industrial fields such as Delta’s Founder and Delta Electronics Foundation’s Chairman, Bruce Cheng, A. Lange & Söhne’s CEO, Wilhelm Schmid, Qualcomm Incorporated’s President, Derek Aberle, UBS Taiwan’s General Manager, Dennis Chen, and the Minister of Science and Technology, Liang-Gee Chen, were invited to share their observations and thoughts with Friedman.

Derek Aberle, Qualcomm Incorporated’s President, believes the Moore’s Law is still applicable now. For example, in terms of cloud computing, Qualcomm has adopted the 10nm technology for its microprocessor, which is packed with 8 billion tiny transistors, showing the smaller the product, the better the performance. As for the next generation technology, it will be led by 5G and IoTs. It is estimated that, about USD 12 trillion worth of peripheral services and business opportunities will be created by the year of 2035. Liang-Gee Chen, the Minister of Science and Technology, replied with the 3Cs – People Change, People Care and People Can. He called for Taiwan to get rid of habitual linear thinking and break through the difficulties the industries are facing with entrepreneurship and positive thinking so experts in Taiwan can fully display their talent. Dennis Chen, UBS Taiwan’s General Manager, stated that Friedman’s 3M theory (Market, Mother Nature and Moore’s Law) is also applicable in the finance industry. For example, it is hard to imagine Qatar's geopolitics would affect the trend of the Euro-Bund Futures, and it used to be difficult for an ordinary investor to analyze the trend on his or her own but it can be done using new technology now.

Bruce Cheng, Delta’s founder who has paid attention to the environmental protection issues for a long time, used the term “Black Elephant” (a cross between a black swan and the elephant in the room) which is mentioned in the book, Thank you for being late and said “People have been talking about the environmental protection issues for a long time and I doubt the institutions have really got it. It is like people have heard about the Paris Agreement, but if no action is taken, it will be something very serious.” Taiwan has suffered many typhoons and floods during the last few years. The frequency and the scale of damages are increasingly intense and severe. After learning the news of the accidental death of Bo-Lin Chi, the documentary filmmaker of Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above, Mr. Cheng had complicated feelings and hopes people should think more deeply about the message brought by climate change.

BOX:Delta Founder Bruce Cheng’s Short Talk

To cool the Earth, we should strengthen the efficiency of terminal equipment, trans-portation facilities and buildings

I am very honored to meet Thomas again. Last time he spent three years interviewing people in different places including the war zone and his book “Hot, Flat, and Crowded” makes readers feel like they were also there and makes more people understand the severity of climate change. Today, I want to thank Thomas for bringing “Thank you for being late,” which vividly describes the rapidly changing world we are facing today.

The book describes the world’s three biggest forces that are interacting with each other, including:

Market — Rapid changes in the global economy caused by digitalization

Mother Nature — Crises of environmental and climate changes caused by industrialization

Moore’s Law — Fasting changing technology and its effect

How should we adapt to and keep up with the rapidly changing world? The major points of today’s education are different from those in the past. We must make better use of our potential intelligence, constantly absorb new knowledge, and never stop learning throughout our lifetime. Taking Delta as an example, we introduced ET in IT in 2000. Luckily we developed the light, thin, and compact switching power supply to replace the heavy linear power supply in 1983 and established “To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow” as our company mission. We increased the power supply efficiency from 50% efficient to a bit higher each year. By 2000, the switching power supply efficiency increased to more than 90%, which made us become the largest supplier in the world. From 2010 to 2016, Delta helped the customers save 20.8 billion kWh of electricity by increasing the switching power supply efficiency. In terms of factory production, we also took the initiative to reduce the power consumption per unit output. After improving and learning from each other, more than 50 factories halved their power consumption per unit output from 2009 to 2014.

In addition, as we saw there are many green buildings in the world, we took the colleagues from Delta Group and Delta Electronics Foundation to visit Europe and other countries. In 2006, our first green building (Tainan Factory) was completed and saved more than 30% of electricity. Encouraged by such great achievement, we decided to build only green buildings for factories from then on. For the ensuing decade, we built 24 green buildings in Taiwan, China, India, the US, and Europe, which have saved more than 50% of electricity on average. We use half of the green buildings and donated the other half to schools. For the 11 green buildings that we are using, 14600 kWh of electricity is saved per year. The Delta Products Corporation (DPC) located in Fremont, California, is currently targeting Net-Ze-ro energy consumption. As for the two green buildings we donated, the energy use intensity (annual kWh consumed per square meter) for Ming Chuan Elementary School in Namaxia of Kaohsiung is below 7 and that for Y.S Sun Green Building Research Center (The Magic School of Green Technologies) lower than 30. Both of them can save energy by over 70% when compared to build-ings of the same type.

Speaking of climate change, Delta witnessed and promised to reduce green-house gas emission along with other global leading enterprises in the COP21 held in Paris in 2015. However, according to the latest data provided by the UNEP, even if all countries in the world are committed to follow the Paris Agreement, we still need to reduce 14 billion more tons of CO2 equivalent to keep the global average temperatures from rising more than 2℃. Therefore, the global temperature will still increase by 2.9℃ to 3.4℃. In order to reach the goal of carbon reduction, we have to strengthen energy conservation in the terminal equipment, transportation facilities and buildings, which is what Delta is currently working on. When President Trump announced the withdrawal of the US from the Paris Agreement, many intellectuals and business leaders came out and expressed they will stay in the Paris Agreement. L. Rafael Reif, the President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a friend of Delta, issued an open letter and pointed out global warming and its consequences present risks too grave to gamble with. Let’s encourage each other and work together. Delta will continue to launch innovative energy-saving solutions in response to the global warming challenge.
