Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara

Bishop of Faridabad

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Beloved children,

Once again Christmas is approaching us with God's gracious gift of salvation to every one of good will on earth. The mystery of incarnation unfolded in the Sacred Scriptures introduces us to a Redeemer who assumes our human nature and abides among us as the Emmanuel - God with us. Child Jesus in the Crib gathers around him the whole humanity in need of salvation, proclaiming God's availability in him to all who seek him and creates a bond of communion and fraternity among all people. Assuming our human nature he sanctifies our frail human nature and offers us the gift of divine sonship. "To all who received him, who believed in His name, he gave power to become children of God" (Jn.1,12). Thus Christmas is in a very special sense, a celebration of fraternity, fellowship and love - a feast of families and communities, occasion to ensure peace in our lives, in our families and in our society.

The message of Pope Francis on the occasion of the “World Day of Peace” is entitled “Fraternity, the foundation and pathway to peace” (8 December 2013). He underlines therein that, “without fraternity it is impossible to build a just society and a solid and lasting peace. The family is the wellspring of all fraternity, and as such it is the foundation and the first pathway to peace, since, by its vocation, it is meant to spread its love to the world around it.”

As we are celebrating Christmas, every member of the family may review and examine their role and responsibility in the family. We should see whether the family is molded like the Holy Family; whether a spirit of prayer and unity flourish there and a new generation is formed in Christian values and principles. Family is the pulpit where the word of God is to be preached for the first time; family is called that sense the “domestic church” by the Second Vatican Council. Our Church is blessed with good families and they are known for strong family ties. Our tradition of family prayer is the uniting force and cementing element of family relationships. Let us thank the Lord for the atmosphere of “fellowship” and “peace” that exist in our families. Investing in faith formation is the best investment for the future generation. Our Churches laudable tradition of “faith transmission” and “catechism classes” has to be promoted strongly. In the changed times when our children are encountering daunting challenges from consumerism, secularization, ir-religiosity worldliness, etc a sound moral basis for their character is of great importance. The life of child Jesus, “growing in faith and intellect” (Luke 2, 18) must be a model for all our children.

Once we learn to love at home and foster the spirit of Christian fellowship, we should be able to inculcate that to others. We live in a world of fast growing communication and

globalization. But as Pope Benedict XVI pointed out, globalization makes us neighbours, but does not make us brothers. Pope Francis states that situations of inequality, poverty and injustice are signs of a profound lack of fraternity. Each person has to become a “neighbour” who cares for others. One should be able to answer the question “Where is your brother?” (Gen 4:9). This ability to respond (responsibility) should be practiced first of all in the families.

Pope Paul VI (Popolorum Progressio) and John Paul II (Sollicitudo Rei Socialis) exhort us that the integral development of peoples is the new name of peace and that peace is an opus solidaritatis. Christian solidarity presumes that our neighbour is loved not only as “a human being with his or her own rights and a fundamental equality with everyone else, but as the living image of God the Father, redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ and placed under the permanent action of the Holy Spirit”, as another brother or sister. In other words, without recognizing the “the common fatherhood of God” we cannot practice the “brotherhood of all in Christ”. It is through incarnation that we become “children in the Son” children of God.

Christmas gives us an opportunity to “rediscover fraternity” which Jesus has introduced in the world. This fraternity needs to be experienced, proclaimed and witnessed to in the families and society. But only love, bestowed as a gift from God, enables us to accept and fully experience fraternity. Pope Francis underlines that this fraternity is a gift of God associated with “grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ, for the common good” (cf. Eph 4:7,25; 1 Cor 12:7).”This entails weaving a fabric of fraternal relationships marked by reciprocity, forgiveness and complete self-giving, according to the breadth and the depth of the love of God offered to humanity in the One who, crucified and risen, draws all to himself “

May this Christmas make us more aware of the fraternity for which we are called, recognizing the divine fatherhood of God. During Advent, many families keep fasting and practice little sacrifices. We have the good practice of offering special contributions during Christmas. Our Youth organize distributing “winter kits” to the poor and needy, to those who sleep under the over-bridges and flyovers – the so called “homeless”. In some parishes, they collect food and clothes to distribute at the Railway stations and hospitals. Such initiatives are to be promoted. That’s the best way to practice fraternity especially during Christmas. Just as one extends one’s hand, one should learn to extend one’s heart to others. A “helping heart” extends much more than a “helping hand”. Let us open up our hearts to others, starting with to the near and dear ones, to the family members and friends.

Christmas is also a celebration of migrants. Joseph and Mary were migrants: they were on the move to Bethlehem, to Egypt, to Nazareth. Jesus is born in a migrant set-up. Our diocese is a mission and migrant diocese. We have left our homes and ancestors and find home in the migrated place. In that context, the spirit of fraternity and care for the other is all the more important. Let us all strive for an ecclesial life of true communion and togetherness.

I wish you all a BLESSED CHRISTMAS and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

Your Bishop Archbisop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara

Bishop of Faridabad Diocese

Set in the pristine valley of Dehradun, the following is the story of a true friend, a person who laid down his

own life for his friend, the story of David and Robert.

Born on the same day in the same place – on 8th December 1969 in St. Mary’s Hospital, they were inseparable, right from the beginning. There wasn’t a time when they weren’t together, just like best friends. But their behaviours were extreme different - poles apart. David was easily influenced by almost everybody, and was vulnerable to depression. He kept all his emotions to himself or you can call him an introvert. But Robert was radically different, happy-go-lucky, lovable but very mature at heart. David used to take prayer as a burden upon himself but Robert saw it as a conversation – with the Almighty God who makes all things in this universe and beyond happen.

12th March 1985 – Matriculation exams were over. Everybody was celebrating the end of a major period of their life – school.

And now waiting for the results …..Two weeks later, their results were

announced. David passed with flying scores – 97% in the science stream. He was the topper of his school and district. Poor Robert had to be content with a mere 75%. He knew problems would arise at his home regarding his marks. Nevertheless, he was happy for his friend David, who consoled him even in his triumphant victory. Both of them went home. Robert received the thrashings of his father, the naggings of his mother and much more. Unable to bear it, he ran away from his home. David, on hearing the news relentlessly pursued in search of his friend and finally found him, in a Church. He brought Robert back to his home, where his parents received him warmly – a result of David’s persuasion.

A Happy ending, right ? Sorry, but the story does not end here.

15th July 1985 – David’s parents – Mr. and Mrs. Mathew sent him to higher studies in the prestigious Christ College

in Bangalore. He wasn’t happy, as Robert couldn’t come because his parents weren’t as well off as David’s . A tearful farewell followed, with Robert bidding adieu to his closest childhood friend David, but not without promising him that he’d come to visit him in his college after three years. David broke down, so did Robert as fate separated them………

The sprawling college with exquisite gardens and fountains, with the bustling city which provided for every possible necessity of his was a new sight for David who came from a rural area. He felt homesick in this new place and missed his friend Robert very much……………..

Meanwhile Robert enrolled himself in a college near his home, and took a degree in B.Com. Every day he used to think about David. You see, at that time even telephones were a rarity, leave alone the Internet or Skype or the Mobile phones we use today. So David or Robert couldn’t contact each other. The only way was by sending letters. But Robert noticed that the frequency of David’s letters lessened day by day. There was very saddening reason behind this too…………..

David got new friends in his college. He was very popular among friends. He transformed into a person who would do anything for his friends. But that didn’t affect his grades, for he was brilliant. So some notorious students decided to lead him astray. And unfortunately David fell into their trap. He began to stop going for the Holy Mass. Those bad friends taught every possible act of notoriety and crime to the innocent David, liquor, drugs and eve-teasing became a normal part of his life. He forgot his friend Robert. He stopped

writing letters to even his parents. He was leading a life in darkness, like that of the Lost Sheep, having no idea where he was going………………..

Back at home, David’s parents were worried about him. They had no idea where he was. Little did they know that David had become a member of the most feared gang in the whole city. Seeing their anxiety, Robert couldn’t contain himself and went in search of David, just as David had done years ago. He took the train to Bangalore…..

The hustle and bustle of city disturbed Robert and just like any other villager, he wished to go back home. But the love for his friend and the sheer determination to fulfill the promise he made to David’s dad kept him going. He visited David’s hostel and asked the students there about his whereabouts. Uttering David’s name evoked fear in their minds, he didn’t know why. He was to know it soon………

Someone showed him David’s room. Entering it made him gag. The air was foul with the smell of liquor and he saw David, his best friend sleeping like a zombie even at noon. He couldn’t understand what was happening. He went to wake up David who punched him in the face and under the daze of drugs, pulled out a pistol. Robert got scared but asked, “why did you do that to me?” But David screamed at him saying, “who are you to disturb my sleep? Get out of my room before I pull the trigger. Out, I said, right now!” Now Robert slowly understood the events as the mystery unfolded before his eyes. But he wasn’t going to give up “till bring you back as my friend, David” he thought as he went out. A daunting task indeed.

Robert followed David everywhere he went – to the bar, clubs, godowns and the meeting house of the ‘gang of criminals’. He tried to meet him, talk to him, persuade him to go back to his home but all in vain. David couldn’t just recognize him………………

After a week of unending persuasion, Robert decided to give it a last try. He went to the Church and prayed fervently so that the soul of his friend may be saved. Soon, it was going to happen.

David’s gang had engaged in a fight with another gang. While David was walking back to the hostel, they attacked him. While he fought off most of them effortlessly, he didn’t see one man holding a knife creeping stealthily behind his back. But Robert who was following David saw it and ran to his rescue. In the fight that followed, David heard Robert scream, “Run for your life David, run”. Suddenly he was struck by the voice as lightning and he recognized his friend Robert. He helplessly watched as the fight continued. Floods of memories filled his mind as he anxiously

hoped for Robert to return. And Robert did return victoriously. David hugged him and at that moment he experienced happiness, something he hadn’t got for ages. But it was short lived, because someone shot Robert, right through the heart. David was horrified as he watched his friend die, falling head first to the ground, in a slow motion. Robert whispered as he lay on the ground, “I am in peace now, David, thank God you came back to normal life.” The warmth in his eyes were gone and his hands went cold as his soul left for the heavenly abode, leaving David crying helplessly over his dead body, begging God to help him return, to bring back his Robert. But the cruel hands of death snatched him away, making David unable to do anything. At that very moment he received a fresh lease of life, that of his friend Robert. And he accepted this gift wholeheartedly, doing justice to it…………………….

Adult Literacy Programme:

The mission of adult literacy programme is to provide basic literacy by imparting functional literacy to women non-literates in the 15-35 age group. This age group has been the focus of attention because they are in the productive and reproductive period of life. The literacy campaign offers them a second chance, in case they missed the opportunity or were denied access to mainstream formal education. Women will be able to assess and interpret their own needs in a number of different ways such as economic concerns, children's education, health issues, quality of life etc through literacy programme. In order to realise this objective, SJSS has appointed teachers and they are providing classes to this learners group. For the effective and immediate result of this programme, the Society has provided a literacy kit at free of cost. More than 350 women participate in the literacy programme from 20 villages of Faridabad district.

There are many types of pollutants that can contaminate drinking water and triggers, illness and disease. Regardless of where drinking water comes from - a lake, a river, an underground aquifer, a well, a public water utility, and even bottled water - all can be contaminated by a number of impurities. Some of these contaminants include chemicals like pesticides, heavy

Exposure to these contaminants can cause a number of health problems, ranging from nausea and stomach pain to developmental problems and cancer. one is aware about it. Thus this forum will help to strengthen social service networks, appreciate the initiatives, and do advocacy and lobbying those social initiatives. He quoted from the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis “Evangelil Gaudium” its 4th chapter named “Social Dimension of Evangelization” that it is the primary responsibility and that social service should be done in the Christian spirituality. and project without bribing and strong recommendation of CSR. The following suggestions and ideas were drawn:• To bring change in the operation mode

of service that is a change from the charity mode to a sustainable mode. The development should be such that even if the project is withdrawn the person must sustain.

• To avail CSR funds from Indian corporate and Global corporate present in the country as it is a mandate for the corporate to contribute into the various social activities.

• To do need assessment. To prioritize the programmes that can be taken up as many schemes of Central and State government are available especially under the Dept. Of Women and Child Welfare.

• To learn from other Diocese such as Gorakhpur and Bijnor that how funds are channelized.

• To tie-up with the Diocese present in abroad.

• To write the project proposals Non-institutional approach should be taken and should not be charity based.

• To do long term planning instead of short term planning.

• To have a clarity of Vision, Mission and Implementation strategy.

• To have a clear and narrow downed target instead of taking up many target groups which may be difficult to concentrate.

• To have willingness, credibility and innovation.

• To focus on urban setting social work• NGOs should be not for profit rather

Santhome Bible Convention 2013

God always hear and answer to our prayers by allowing wonders to be taken place in our life. Santhome Bible Convention in Noida brought us the same experience. It was nothing else but God’s particular intervention and blessing to have the convention in Noida. It was very difficult from the side of the Noida Authority to grand us the permission to conduct the convention and the Lord has changed their minds to support us with the same force during the time of convention.

The weather seemed to be bad on the previous day, but the Almighty who controls the whole Universe stopped the rain and wind, providing us a pleasant weather. Rev. Fr. Xavier Khan Vattayil and Team reached Noida in time but Bro. Ajay Lost his bag in the Airport but after four days the Lord miraculously gave it back! Praise the Lord.

The Inauguration Day on 8th November, the convention started with Rosary at 8.30 am and 9.00 am; Fr. Xavier Khan Vattayil and Team began the praise and worship ceremony and preaching. Around 10.45
