historic relics, nature study. Boundary Specific sites Firewood Available Bookings No: pot luck Warnings Can be very hot in summer, cold in winter. Contact Parks Vic CFA District N. East Visit 22/08/00 Ref 633

Site description Situated in open Ironbark forest with some wattle and shrub understory over gravel. The designated parking areasare designed for car camping - some slope, all have limited vehicle length. "Fire in fireplaces only" signs are obviously ignored in the absence of fireplaces. Surrounded by a typical box-ironbark forest, mainly Red Ironbark, Grey Box and Yellow Gum with relatively sparse undergrowth (wattles, grevilleas, hakeas) on the stony soil. Wildflowers, including terrestrial orchids, are prolific in spring. Once a town of 2,000 little remains of Whroo except peppercorn and pine trees, a large cemetery and the gorge-like open-cut Balaclava Hill mine.

2. Rushworth State Forest:- Reedy Lake Type State Forest, Bush camp

Situated north-west of Nagambie, south-east of Rushworth. Access from Nagambie [A39] at the northern edge of the town; left 4.9k on Lobbs Lane (Wine Tour 64) (Kirwans Bridge 10 ton load limit), left 1.5k on Cettles Rd, right at the T junction 1.4k on Reedy Lake Rd (gravel) to the start of the forest. Alternatively, access possible from Rushworth via Whroo or from Murchison. Privacy Good - it is possible to get well off the country road. Site description Very pleasant bush camping by a large lake, well shaded by young River Red Gum with a thin understory of low scrub over short grass and wild-flowers. Plentiful bird life, including waterbirds. Yabbies in the lake. Reedy Lake Rd runs round the western and north western edge of the forest for over 4k, with 4 access tracks leading off to the lake. The first and last tracks offer the best opportunity for getting well off the road. The last track has a BBQ by the gate and access to a low forested ridge (useful in wet weather). The middle 2 tracks are short, the lake being within view of the Reedy Lake Rd. Remnants of Carrows sawmill can be found, from which red-gum sleepers were taken by horse tramway to the Goulburn Valley Railway, explaining the lack of mature River Red Gums.

About 10 sites per zone, cut into the hillside, most are level but some are difficult to access. Some have lake view (if full). Each has a wood BBQ. Light shade from Southern Blue Gum and Peppermint with an understory of tea tree. Surrounded by forested ridges. Tanks signed "not for drinking". Patrolling ranger may collect fees. No generators or chainsaws. Zone 8 closed (Feb 2005) - popularity of the camps has declined - possibly due to low lake level &/or fee increases. Boat ramp at nearby marina.

Big River State Forest (Lower) - General

Located 240k NE of Melbourne in the lower valley of the Big River as it enters Lake Eildon, on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range. Sites are accessed via the Eildon-Jamieson Road, about 30k east from Eildon Access Sealed Road Privacy Good, being located in the centre of a large State Forest. Sites are popular (crowded) over school holidays. Site description The entire Big River valley is covered by some of the finest eucalypt forests in Australia. The foothill slopes of the lower Big River support Messmate, Mountain Grey Gum and Peppermint with relatively little undergrowth, principally wattle around the watercourses. Most of the forest is regrowth following the major wildfires in 1926 and 1939. Alluvial gold mining attracted many prospectors between the 1850s and 1900, activity extending as far upstream (south) as Enoch Point. Most camp sites are small, semi-cleared, grassy river flats.

Site description The entire Big River valley is covered by some of the finest eucalypt forests in Australia. The headwaters of the Big River support magnificent stands of Mountain and Alpine Ash with lush undergrowth. Most of the forest is regrowth following the major wildfires in 1926 and 1939. Cattle were grazed in the forest through to the 1960s. The Big River Road runs 25k down the valley, descending from about 600m to 420m at 25 Mile Creek. The vegetation becomes a little drier, the terrain rougher and the road gradually deteriorates eventually to a 4-wheel track after 25 Mile Creek. There are 19 recognised campsites, 2 of them with facilities. Most sites are small, semi-cleared river flats. Alluvial gold mining attracted many prospectors after the 1850s. Deep lead mining was carried out near Stockmans Reward. A large dredge operated there in the 1920s.The Yarra Track, the original access route to the Woods Point goldfields, crossed the Big River at Stockmans Crossing (later renamed Stockmans Reward after gold was found there).

Site description A large bush camp site extending from grassed clearings on both sides of the road into the surrounding forest, especially on the south side away from the creek. The gravely ground slopes gently. Well shaded by Blackwood, Mountain Ash and wattle. Poplars and apples are remnants of the forestry camps. Wrens, tree climbers and kookaburras are common. Popular with trail bikers, especially at weekends. Parts of the area are worn, reflecting constant use.

From the Eildon-Warburton & Big River Rd junction: Right (E) 1.2k on the Big River Rd, left (north) 800m down the Reids Quarry Rd to its end (gravelled, a couple of wash-outs, signposted Reeds Rd). Site description An attractive bush camp - the most pleasant in the Upper Big River area. A gently sloping, grassed and shaded clearing near the bubbling Arnold Creek. Being an old house site there are a number of exotic plants including pines, oaks and plums as well as Blackwood, wattles and Mountain Ash. Some sites are separated by shrubs. Wrens, tree climbers and kookaburras are common. Reids does not appear to attract trail-bike or 4-wheel enthusiasts.

All sites are level and most are separated by bush and fenced rejuvenation areas. All are well shaded by Mountain Ash and Blackwood, backed by steep forested slopes. Most sites can be glimpsed from the low use forestry road. Wrens, tree climbers, kookaburras and wallabies are common. The Yarra Track, the original access route to the Woods Point goldfields, crossed the Big River at Stockmans Crossing (later renamed Stockmans Reward after gold was found). Alluvial gold mining attracted many prospectors after the 1850s. Deep lead mining was carried out nearby. A large dredge operated here in the 1920s. Popular at peak periods.
