Audit Scope
Dear Chapter Members,
I find myself writing this message to you all with mixed emotions as we have had such a successful Chapter year and accomplished so much, yet the Chapter year end is fast approaching and as such my term is coming to its conclusion. Let me begin by saying it has been an absolute pleasure serving you as President for the 2009/2010 year. This year has allowed me to meet and speak with many of our members, attend some wonderful training/networking events, and see our Chapter become one of the premiere IIA Chapters in North America having attained “Gold”
status for the fifth consecutive year!
I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on this past year’s successes and contributions by our membership. Many of you have volunteered your personal time and efforts to ensure that the Chapter continues to produce at a high level of service to our membership. In particular I would
like to recognize the following contributions
• Our Board of Governors and its officers who met monthly in order to discuss strategy and direction of the Chapter. Without their insight and feedback, we could not have achieved all that we did this year including hosting a successful Eastern Regional Conference (ERC) with
our colleagues from IIA Headquarters.
• The Programs Committee and the respective Conference Committees successfully delivered to you the ERC event and more recently a very successful Spring Conference which hosted close to 500 attendees. The committee also held various monthly events and was able to obtain relevant speakers who discussed the challenges that are facing our profession today. They worked diligently to find locations to host our events and provide you with quality CPE’s at a reasonable cost point. We were also very fortunate to partner with such great
organizations as ISACA, ACFE, FIRMA, and the Penn State Smeal Business Club.
• The Strategic Planning Committee conducted interviews with our Board and surveyed our membership so as to build a robust three year plan which will keep the Chapter on the
cutting edge and help us maintain our premiere status
• The Academic Relations Committee continued to foster positive relationships with regional universities, faculty, and students. They continued their pursuit to educate and bring recognition to the internal audit profession. We continue to award several students each year
by way of our Annual Essay Contest.
• This year brought us more certification recipients than ever before. We are so proud of the recipients for achieving their goals and thank our Certifications Committee for facilitating the certification process in Philadelphia. The Chapter in partnership with Villanova University hosted two successful CIA Learning courses this year; we thank Villanova for its continued
support of our membership.
• Our Chief Audit Executives Committee held four roundtable sessions with regional CAE’s, including track sessions at both of our conferences. We hope to continue to expand our CAE
footprint in the upcoming year. Continued on next page...

• Our Employment Committee continued to share with you employment opportunities so as to aid our members with their job search. The last year has been trying and we have experienced a difficult economic environment, I thank the committee for proactively managing and presenting new leads and advertising them, both on the website and in the
newsletter.
• Our Social Committee coordinated our annual Membership Recognition and Awards Dinner. The dinner honored many of the individuals that contributed to this year’s successes, our
essay contest winners, and certification recipients.
• Our Newsletter and Website Committees continued to keep us up to date with breaking
news about the Chapter and increased the frequency of communication to our membership.
• The Membership Committee gained a lot of ground this year with several new endeavors aimed at increasing membership. They continued to manage our membership roster, were present at our various chapter events, and hosted social events. Additionally, this team
initiated the Chapters official Facebook page.
There were also several individual contributors who advanced our Chapter this year in roles outside of our Board and committees, including our Events Coordinator Lorraine Mariella, our Capologist Tonya DiGiuseppe, our Email Blast Coordinator Nicolle Bambach, our Nominating Chair Michelle Hayes and our District Representative Dave Naser. I would also like to thank AC Lordi Consulting for sponsoring the Chapter’s various email blasts, their support is sincerely
appreciated.
Additionally, I would like to give personal thanks to the following organizations who donated their beautiful meeting spaces so that the Chapter could host its events, the Federal Reserve Bank of
Philadelphia, Exelon Corporation, and Villanova University.
Finally, I would like to thank the entire membership for their support, feedback and attendance at our events, all of which contributed to the growth of the Chapter. My appreciation and thanks
goes out to all of you!
Thank you again for allowing me the privilege to serve you as President and I look forward to
continuing to network with you at future events.
Best Regards,
Ram Vijayanathan
President

Recent Event
The IIA 2010 Spring Conference
The annual Spring Conference held on April 19, 2010 at the Center City Marriott in Philadelphia was
a sold out event! There were 28 terrific, high caliber speakers delivering presentations in five tracks
covering Internal Audit, Governance Risk & Compliance, Information Technology, Fraud, and an
invitation-only Chief Audit Executive track. With clips from movies and news segments, the two
exciting keynote speakers, Adam West the ‘Classic Batman’ and Nydia Hahn, Channel 6 news
reporter shared their unique life experiences with the attendees. The conference was a resounding
success and a great educational and networking opportunity for the over 400 attendees representing
125 organizations. The evaluations received from the attendees regarded it as a high quality
program at a great value.
Thank you to all volunteers on the Spring Conference Committee for their time and phenomenal
efforts in bringing a professionally rewarding event for our Chapter members.

Reminder!
Why is Updating Your IIA Membership/Profile Information VERY Important to the Chapter?
The Philadelphia Chapter relies entirely on the accuracy of the information contained in your IIA Membership Profile as our means of communication with you. The accuracy of your Profile information determines whether or not you get email announcements for upcoming events and newsletters (email address and email contact preferences) or whether you receive invitations to CAE Only events (Job Title and Code).
If you have changed employers, received a promotion, have a different preferred email address, or would prefer to or not to receive emails regarding Chapter events, all this information is contained in your IIA Membership Profile.
We encourage you to keep your member record current through the IIA’s interactive web tool – and it is easy! IIA members can
make changes online and see the results on-screen immediately after submission. This is the best way to ensure The IIA and your
local Institute has your most up-to-date accurate information. Check your record now at http://www.theiia.org/membership/ and Click
on “Update Your Profile” at the top of the page. This will take you no more than 5 minutes and will help to ensure you receive the
information you want to receive, via the means you desire and at the email address you prefer.

Gleim CIA Review Course
Schedule Your Exam Early Melissa Leonard Gleim Chapter Coordinator When the CIA Exam became computerized in 2008, it went from being offered only twice a year to being available year round. Candidates can register and take the exam at any time as long as the testing center has an appointment available. The IIA made this change in order to make taking the exam more convenient, but, as I talk with CIA candidates, I have found that many are more likely to procrastinate knowing they can take the exam on any future date. Your goal is to pass the CIA exam as quickly as possible. When you delay taking the exam, you prevent yourself from being able to take advantage of the benefits that come with a certification. To combat this problem, register and schedule exams early. Registering early establishes a finish line. If you are studying with the mindset that you will take the exam at some vague future time, it allows you to procrastinate. If you have no target, you are less likely to succeed. On the other hand, with a firm date set in advance, you can work each day to reach your goal of passing the exam on the date that is convenient for you. Another point concerning registering and scheduling early is that, if you wait until the last minute to schedule your exam, you run the risk that the testing center does not have the date or time you want available. You are then forced to schedule your exam earlier than you are actually prepared for or much later, which prevents you from taking it as soon as you have completed your review. Neither scenario puts you in the best possible position to succeed. Each time you want to take a part, map out a calendar of what you will need to study each day leading up to the desired exam date. For example, if you wish to take Part 1 of the CIA exam in 6 weeks, first create a study schedule detailing how many study units you need to complete each week while leaving time at the end for a cumulative review, and then decide what will be a suitable date to take Part 1. By immediately registering for and scheduling your exam well in advance, you will have (1) a date that is convenient for you and (2) a finish line that forces you to focus throughout the year, even in the summer months when you can be distracted by vacations and warmer weather. Therefore, I suggest that, if you are studying for a part and have not scheduled an exam date or you are thinking about studying for a part, use the Gleim CIA Review System and work with your Personal Counselor to create a study plan together. Once the study plan is complete, you should immediately schedule your exam date. Much of the battle of getting through the CIA exam is keeping yourself focused. By planning early, you get the dates you want, you commit to studying regularly, and you pass the exam. Remember, as a Philadelphia Chapter member, you will receive a 20% discount on the Gleim CIA Review materials. Gleim has been helping CIA candidates pass the CIA Exam since 1980. Contact Melissa at 800.874.5346, ext. 131 or [email protected] to take advantage of your chapter discount or if you have any questions. Do you have feedback on what you have read or suggestions on future topics? Maybe you are studying for the exam or have
recently passed and want to share tactics you used. Email Gleim at [email protected] with your comments.
