Greetings from Grande Voiture Headquarters! The 2020 Midwinter Petite is now history. The Voyageurs of Monroe County No. 804 are to be commended for hosting this event. Everything went off without a hitch. Was somewhat disappointed that more Voyageurs from neighboring Locales were not present!

We changed the proceedings for the Committee on Committee meeting on Friday afternoon. Everyone was invited in for this meeting. Grand Sous Chef de Train Dale Oatman, due to very serious health issues, informed the membership that he cannot continue moving up the Line to becoming Grand Chef de Gare. Larry Winger, John Edelblute IV and Dave Behling will all be moving up two positions this coming August. Many of us were very happily surprised that so many Voyageurs expressed an interest in becoming a Line Officer.

Sheboygan County No. 1080 submitted a bid for the pur-pose of hosting the 2022 Midwinter Petite Promenade. It will be held at the Country Inn and Suites in Port Washington. The inspection was waived being that a lot of us have been there many times in the past.

The Grande de Wisconsin is taking out a full page Ad in the Grande du Ohio program booklet for their 2020 National Promenade to be held in Sandusky. Jim Chapin read of a number of Housekeeping changes to our Constitution & Bylaws that will be officially voted on this summer at the Grande Promenade. The membership voted on donating to Jim Vissers $500 to his campaign fund as he runs for Chef de Chemin de Fer. The $10,000 the Grande Voiture pledged to Camp American Legion for the new cabin will be paid as soon as it is completed. The new Grande Voiture flag has been put on hold until the cost can be put into the budget. $3,450.00. And we still aren’t sure which vendor we will be going to. This is because two more vendors were mentioned during the finance meeting to contact.

I’ve sold out on the 30 100th Anniversary coins that I purchased from National. You can still however order them from Nationale. They are $10.00 each but only $8.00 if you order ten.

We have finally found an adequate speaker system to purchase for the Grande. For the last two years after it was discussed and voted on; many of us have been looking for one but to no avail. This one is being ordered from Amazon.

The Grande is planning another Rainbow Flowage cleanup weekend for some-time this spring after the snow melts. A new door needs to be installed at the pavilion along with replacing a broken window and installing the snap on screens by the two overhead doors. And of course picking up any dead branches and raking up the area. There has been some talk of maybe buying some heavy duty wall fans for better circulation.

On 02-14-20 I received a call that Jim Chapin had passed away. What do I do as Grand Correspondant; send this infor-mation out by email! As soon as I sent it out I received another call stating that maybe Jim didn’t pass. After all was said and done; Jim is alive and well and at Polk-Burnett Voiture Locales No. 236 February Promenade a number of Voyageurs were fined in absenteeism by the Grand Correspondant for spreading false information. Scared the heck out of Mary and I that evening.

Finishing up my 15th consecutive year as your Grand Cor-respondant I have reached a few milestones. I’m the senior Grand Correspondant of the Great Lakes Region and 7th in seniority in all of La Societe. At the Grande Promenade later this summer; the membership will need to vote on having me reappointed for another five years or make a change. This is following our Constitution & Bylaws.

One of the things that I do is drive veterans to the VA Hospitals in Madison and Milwaukee. I was asked why I do it? There are a lot of reason why I do it.

First, I get to drive Veterans that really need the help. As time goes by you learn what they are being treated for. It makes you feel quite lucky with your little aches and pains.

I was taking one Veteran who was in the Philippines during WII and at the end of the War he was stationed at Sugamo prison in Japan. One of his duties was to take the infamous Japanese General Tojo to the restroom in the morning and take him back to his cell. He was not allowed to speak to him.

He also met a childhood friend there. He used to come from Japan every summer and spend the summer with his cousin. Why he was at that prison he didn’t find out. He probably didn’t want to know!

Another Veteran I use to drive to the VA, I found out he was in the hospital so I went to see him while I was up there. The Chaplain was giving him his last rights. After the Chap-lin left, I stopped in to say Hi! He told me about the time when he was in the Milwaukee VA. He stayed on campus because of the treatment he was receiving. On Saturday a bunch of boat captains came up and took a lot of them out on Lake Michigan fishing. He caught a 40 inch Salmon that day and other fish. That is what he was remembering in his last hours.

It is Veterans like this that make getting up at 4:00 A.M. in the morning worth it. Every County in Wisconsin is always looking for drivers. Check with your County Veterans Services Officer for when and how you can be of assistance to them!

Recruiting for La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux

In the last several weeks, I have heard numerous Voyageurs say that we only “invite” veterans to become members of the 40 and 8…we don’t “recruit” veterans to become members of the 40 and 8. Then, when I ask how many

Veterans they have invited to become members of the 40 and 8, I hear couple of dozen reasons why they have not invited any Veteran to become a member. So, let me share a couple of ideas with you about “recruiting” and “inviting” Veterans to become members of the 40 and 8.

First, let’s look at what it takes to be a good 40 and 8 “Recruiter.”

1. Know your capabilities---believe in yourself!2. Know your competition. Know what the re-

quirements are to belong to other Veteran Service Organizations.

3. Know what the programs of the 40 and 8 are and how they work.

4. Know what your local Voiture Locale does in your community.

Then you must:1. RECRUIT-RECRUIT-RECRUIT. That means look-

ing for veterans to talk with about the 40 and 8.2. Establish rapport and creditability.3. Prequalify the Veteran.4. Review with the veteran the 40 & 8 brochure. 5. Discuss what programs your local Voiture Locale is

doing to support your local community.6. Overcome their objections7. Complete the nomination form8. Ask for referrals. Does the veteran know of any other

veteran that may be interested in becoming a member of the 40 and 8?

Seems easy doesn’t it!!! Unless we, the current Forty and Eighters, start “recruiting” for Veterans to “invite” to become members of the 40 and 8, we will lose our status of being “The Honor Society of American Veterans.” Think about it!

The 65th Annual Pilgrimage at the Veteran’s Home in King, Wisconsin will be held on Father’s Day, June 21, hosted by the 8th District. The program was final-ized by the 8th District at King on Saturday, February 22.

For those who wish to arrive ear-ly, the day will start at 0830 at the Marden Center with refreshments by the Auxiliary Unit, an overview

of King and their updates. From 0945 until 1100, attendees will visit King residents in their halls, serving coffee and cake. Lunch for the participants will be from 1100 to 1200. Subway sandwiches will be served, with King providing potato salad and baked beans, at a cost of $8.00. After lunch, the park will be set up for the afternoon events.

Parade set-up will begin at 1245 in front of Ainsworth Hall, with a start time slated for 1300. There will be Bingo from 1345 to 1430. From 1300 to 1500 there will be Fun in the Park with a petting zoo, photo booth, and ice cream. The opening program on the grandstand will start at 1320 with the flag retirement and closing of the day at 1445.

As of the meeting date, a band had not been scheduled, but is a work in process.

I hope to see many of you there.

I hope your plans for your 100th 40 et 8 Birthday Celebration are set. Please keep reminding your Locale Directeur’s Ritual about this special 40 et 8 event. The Ritual for the Celebration for the Birthday of La Societe encourages you to have a program leaflet, color guard, a Chef de Cuisine (who will need a knife to cut the cake) along with a Chef de Gare, Conducteur, Aumonier, guest speaker and a cake. Be sure to take pictures of your event and send them with proper captions to the Forty et Eighter magazine.

100 years ago Joseph Breen (First Chef de Chemin de Fer) and 15 other WWI veterans met in Philadelphia and formed the 40 et 8. Could they have envisioned this Honor Society of American Veterans today? They are proud of all the Voyageurs Militaire who followed to make this a great Veterans Organization. La Societe worked for the cure of Diphtheria, influenced Congress regarding WWI Veterans benefits, established programs to assist others like Child Welfare, Youth Sports, Nurses Training, Carville Star, Americanism, Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service, POW/MIA Scholarship, and the National Box Car Association.

As we celebrate this milestone of our Societe, you can be proud of the accomplishments and the direction it is going. In Service to La Societe.

Teamwork and Having Fun Make the 40 et 8 No. 1

Fellow Voyageurs and Dames, I hope this finds everyone well and free from the Coronavirus! As for myself, I’m drinking a 12 pack of Corona a day to build up my immunity to the virus! So far it’s working quite well!

According to the last report I received, which was dated

January 23rd, we had eight of the thirty WI Voitures at 100% or more. That means the rest of us have a lot of catching up to do! I’m sure numbers have improved since the 23rd and we are at about eighty percent or more by now. I just picked up four delinquent memberships this last week myself! We must all work together to achieve our membership goals.

Remember, a small sum from every membership fee goes directly into the George B. Boland Nurses Schol-arship Fund and the Charles W. Ardery Memorial Child Welfare Trust Fund. With a strong membership we can benefit all the programs of the Forty and Eight. With the weather improving, let’s get out and make this a banner year for Grande Voiture De Wisconsin!

I would like to thank all who have taken and sold pins support-ing the Child Welfare Program. From National I did receive 250 of the 2020 pins at the start of the year and only have 4 left at present time. Had 115 out on consignment and 30 left! Three people with ten each to be paid

for by April 1st.Do need for everyone to know that any time we have

a house fire or other natural disaster we should be filling out the Charles W. Ardery Child Welfare forms for any children under the age of 18 that are involved. Each Grande Voiture is allotted $5,000 per year. Once your al-lotment is used up; you are eligible to apply again. Please remember however that only clothes (only essential) are allowed. No food, school supplies or sports equipment will be accepted.

As we all know that what supports the Charles W. Ard-ery fund is the sale of the Child Welfare pins. Historically we in the Grande de Wisconsin are the biggest users of the Ardery fund in all of La Societe so if you haven’t purchased a pin yet; please do! Anyone wanting more pins or wish to pay for those you have on consignment can reach me at 23870 Sorge Ln. Muscoda, WI. 53573.

At Grande Promenade in August 2019, the report I gave was very encouraging. Out of 34 Wisconsin Voiture’s, I received 17 reports: 50 percent reporting. That is better than it has been in a few years.

However, it was very disappoint-ing that of the 17 reports I received, there were only 10 that included the names and addresses of the person

filling out the report. And not only that, but some of them didn’t even have the Voiture name or number that submitted them. Since I do not have the gift of ESP and I am not psychic, there was no way for me to know where those reports came from.

So, please be sure to fill out the reports completely and accurately. Not only does it make my decision easier, but it gives your Voiture a better chance for awards, since incomplete reports are ineligible for judging.

Of the 34 Voiture’s in our Grande, only seven reported Badger Boys activity. I have no way of knowing whether the other 27 Voiture’s have done anything for the program or not. I know you have all heard this before, but I will say it again: even if your Voiture does not actively participate in this or any program, please send a report anyway. Just fill in the pertinent information, like your Voiture Number and the name of the person filling out the report, and write “no activity” across the top of the report. That way we will know for sure what your Voiture is participating in.

The 2020 session of Badger Boys State will be held June 13-20 at Ripon College. Sponsorship is $300 per student. If your Voiture has the funds, it would be money well spent.

I have sold all the 2020 Americanism pins that I had. I also was informed by National Americanism treasur-er, Milt Harrison, that all the remaining pins are either sold or on consignment. So, if anyone needs more pins, contact me and I will contact Milt to see if any pins have been returned.

If any Voiture Locale wants to nominate someone for the annual Americanism Award, all the information is on Voiture Nationale’s website under the Americanism pro-gram tab. The nominee does not have to be a Voyageur or a Dame, but the person should be very active in supporting his or her community or Veterans. If you do have someone in mind, follow the protocol on the Americanism website.

You should have received your Petite Communiques from Grand Correspondant Tom Orval. Please, when filling them out, be sure to fill in all the information at the top of the report. As in, the name of the person doing the report, the Voiture number, the Voiture name, etc. If the report is not filled out correctly, it cannot be used for award judging, or for my report to Nationale on all you do for La Societe.

Thank you for your participation in the Americanism program and for everything you do to help your fellow veterans and the communities you live in.

There was a resolution that came before the 2018 Nurses Training Committee Meeting in Louisville, KY to present a National Nurse of the Year Award. The resolu-tion was tabled until the 2019 Nurses Training Committee Meeting in Myrtle Beach, SC. When it was passed, work began on what the criteria should be for the selection of the National Nurses of the Year.

Information for the nomination and procedures for this award is on the National Web Site. Under the program drop-down box, select the Nurses Training Program and you will find all the information required for submitting a nurse of the year for your locale. If you require any help, please feel free to contact me at 920-739-4506 or email me at [email protected]. I will be glad to help you in any way I can. Remember that this award is presented to only registered nurses (RN’s).

Many questions have been asked along with opinions given over the years on a Voyageurs proper attire at dif-ferent events they are attending. We will start with the chapeau. A Voyageur is not considered to be in uniform unless they are wearing their chapeau. You should always have the chapeau marching medal centered on the right side of the chapeau. The ribbon worn should always reflect the highest office previously held as in blue, red, white or gold.

Voyageurs will always remove their chapeau while eat-ing sit-down meals. Drinking adult beverages responsibly with your chapeau on is accepted behavior as long as you are someplace acceptable.

Grande Voiture Line Officers. Red blazers, chapeau, grey pants and polished black shoes. Ties or bolo ties are permissible. We have been getting somewhat lax on this!

National Officers and appointed Directeur’s / Sous. Gold blazer, ties or bolo ties, black pants and black polished shoes.

The Grande Voiture de Wisconsin has always prided itself on wearing proper attire. This goes back to the days of our Godfather (Arthur N. Jacoby) who was our Grand Correspondant from 1974 – 1994. This is especially true at the National Promenade where all Wisconsin Voyageurs do wear their proper attire on Friday. We take pictures at the close of the session and I can say with pride that most Grande Voiture’s are rather envious of how we not only dress but also handle ourselves overall as Voyageurs.

It is really great to have all this support behind me. If elected, I will represent Grande Voiture de Wisconsin in a very professional manner. Thank you again.

Greetings my fellow Voyageurs,I would like to talk about a pos-

sible membership technique that you might like to give a try. We have been successful in retaining and getting the last few years in Milwaukee County Voiture #1519.

I have found out that we person-ally recruit new and old members

to be a part of a team or squad with our programs within the 40 et 8 organization. Believe me it is a recruitment and retention tool. In Milwaukee I have put together the Flags for First Graders program team. We have been going to at least 11 elementary schools within a school year. We set the program up for around the Veterans Day and Memorial Day holidays. Everyone gets excited about educating the youth of today for tomorrow as Voyageurs and great American. I encourage to get your members and Voiture involved, it works and you won’t regret it.

Really enjoyed the Mid-Winter Promenade and Rendezvous in Tomah very much! It was great to see everyone as it has been a while due to work and family commitments. That fortunately is freeing up a bit. Un-fortunately I am not going to be able to attend the Great Lakes Promenade this year. I am on board for King Day and the 40 et 8 weekend at Camp American Legion. I am already planning on being part of the fishing tournament with the biggest catch, whether it be a Northern Pike or a Weed Bass. And also lest I forget the National Promenade in Sandusky, Ohio will be a new experience for me. I plan on attending other Grande de Wisconsin Voiture upcom-ing events whenever possible and personally meeting Voyageurs I do not already know.

In closing I just want to add very kindly and quietly to make some phone calls and start knocking on some doors to check on your older Voiture members and those who have not renewed yet. If you would like my help. JUST ASK.

Yours in Faith Family Forty et Eight

It just wouldn’t be Midwinter without some kind of weather event, and this year proved no exception. Everything was great up until Sun-day morning, when everyone had to leave. Winter storm Lamont had blown in overnight and we woke up to snow on the ground. The track of the storm was a lateral one across the state, and most of the Forty and Eighters had to drive right through it

to get home. Some left early and some just stayed another night, not willing to make the hazardous trip. I haven’t heard otherwise, so I guess everyone got home safe and sound.

Voiture 804 of Monroe County, the host of the Midwinter Petite, does not have a Cabane of its own, so the Dames of La Crosse County Cabane 830 took care of the arrange-ments for La Femmes. They did an outstanding job and I applaud them for planning and organizing an efficient, orderly Rendezvous.

For the business that we took care of at Mid-winter Petite, see Grande Correspondante Mary’s article in this newspaper. A couple of decisions were made that will require bylaw changes.

Our workshop at Mid-winter, I hope, was informative for the new Dames who attended. I tried to stress the point that every Dame should have a copy of the Grande de Wisconsin Bylaws and Handbook, also the Constitution, Ritual Book, Member Handbook and Cabane Guide published by Cabane Nationale. That sounds like a lot of literature, but I would say every question that you have or every issue that comes up is probably covered in one book or another. The national books can be purchased through Cabane Nationale Emblem Sales if your Cabane does not provide them for you. As for the Grande documents, well, they are being revised so new editions of each will be available this fall, hopefully. I will ask Grande Correspondante Mary to have them available to you for download from the Wisconsin Forty and Eight website: wifortyandeight.com.

I have been asked by some Dames when they will be get-ting sweepstakes tickets to sell. The answer, I’m sorry to say, is not this year. The delegation at Grande Rendezvous last August voted not to hold the sweepstakes because the tickets are getting to be too difficult to sell. So, I am asking each Cabane to please consider sending a donation, earmarked “Grande Presidente’s Project” to Grande Commissaire Intendante Carol Ternes. This year the project is Youth Sports and the objective is to earn $1,000. Right now, we are way short of that goal and already the year is half over.

Yes, the year is half over. It’s time to start thinking about annual reports. The reports we heard at Mid-winter were promising, assuring me that you Dames are working side-by-side with your Voyageurs in support of the Forty and Eight programs. Each Cabane should have its report forms — Grande Correspondante Mary sent them out a while ago. They’re due to her in June, which is not that far away anymore, so now is the time get to work on them. Be proud of your accomplishments and show it by reporting.

Keep working hard for the programs, but don’t forget that La Presidente Nationale Penny’s theme for the year is FUN!

I’m hoping this will help you un-derstand our Youth Sports program a little better.

The National Youth Sports Program was started to help grant funds to support young athletes. Your locale can be reimbursed $200.00 per year for assisting youth from 7 to 20 years of age. Our Grand can be reimbursed for $1000.00 annually. This would

allow 5 locales to assist youth teams. If only 1 locale applies for funds it could possibly receive the entire $1,000.00. You must remember that special situations could be considered.

You can support a team or a single participant. The purpose of our program is to build comradeship, participation, lead-ership, sportsmanship, and promote high moral standards.

Any sanctioned sport can be supported. Just a few are; Foot-ball, Softball, Basketball, Soccer, Band, Cheerleading, Com-petitive Dance, Shooting Sports, Water Polo, and Wrestling. Special Olympics can also be supported. The sanctioning bodies can be schools, municipalities, and park systems. Many businesses and clubs also provide sports for our youth. Cart racing is very popular in the midwest. In Eastern Wisconsin, Road America has a road course for carts.

You can get applications for reimbursement and directions from Voiture Nationale’s website listed under Activities. You can also get them at Joe Ternes, 332 S. Heritage Dr., Oostburg, WI 53070 or P. 920-980 8080 and [email protected].

The Mid-Winter Petite Rendez-vous was held February 7-8, 2020 in Tomah, Wisconsin. I would like to say a special thank you to Marian Bloom from Locale Cabane 830 and to Monroe County Voiture 804 for their outstanding job for our weekend. The weather was wonderful until Sunday morning before we needed to leave, snowing. Overall the weekend

was wonderful with all the laughter and happiness we were having together.

We had a wonderful visit with our invited guest: Frank Kronen, Sous Chef de Chemin de Fer 2020 from Grande Voiture de Ohio.

A special thank you to Arlene Koboski from Locale Cabane 830 for attending our Mid-Winter Petite Rendezvous.

Congratulations to Cabanes: Walworth 526, Dane 683, La Crosse 830, Sheboygan 1080, Juneau 1323 and Grant 1372 for 100% membership. Good job Dames!!

As of February 27, 2020 per my membership report:

(7) more Dames to pay their membership dues and Wisconsin would be totally a 100% state in membership. Membership dates are a fiscal year: July 1 card starting to June 30 with December 31 expiration date for the current year. July to June for reports.

We have an upcoming new Grande Presidente for 2020-2021–Jennifer Larson from Locale Cabane 986. Congrat-ulations Jennifer, we know you will do an outstanding job.

Raffle baskets for Grande. Cabane’s who need to bring baskets for the raffle are: Cabane 986, Cabane 1080, Cabane 1372 and Passé Presidente Club. If anyone would like to do-nate a raffle basket, please feel free to do so and that would be appreciated.

Reminders: I will need all the Locale Cabane reports to be mailed to me before the June 27, 2020 deadline. No accepts after that date deadline. Deadline: July 22, 2020-I will need all the award winners, Cabane names and Cabane numbers with who won each class. Please send me by email, by mail or call me on the phone with all your award winners. I will bring all the award winner certificates to Grande.

Awards for Nationale: They have a new updated award list for 2020. Please look at Nationale website for the updated list. I will have some available for you at Grande.

For Grande: There will be no Friday morning Cheminot. Friday morning we will go right into our Friday morning Ren-dezvous, break for our luncheon, finish our Friday afternoon Rendezvous. Saturday morning we will have the Installation of Officers and our new Grande Presidente Jennifer Larson will open our Saturday morning Cheminot. After the Chem-inot has been closed, we will have our installation luncheon. The luncheons will be catered in our meeting room.

We are removing the Badger 40 & 8er report program start-ing next year. Starting next year for reporting your Badger 40 & 8er information: your cost for ads, per capita on members will be added to your Aid to the Voiture report. Your article writing information will be added to each report for the article you are writing on. If you are writing a Child Welfare article, add this information to the Child Welfare report. All report forms will have the updated information areas on each report to add your information on for next year reports.

We are in the process of updating our Grande handbook and doing some (house cleaning) updating on our Constitution and By-Laws. I have had many conversations with our Nationale Avocat – Ethellynn Neville regarding the changes and process. She stated for updating our Constitution and By-Laws, they should be useful to our Grande, as long as we don’t violate the Nationale Constitution and By-Laws.

There will be New Ritual and Constitution and By-Laws books. They will hopefully be done in March or April. They have been all updated and with larger print. I can place an order to Nationale Cabane. Price is going up.

Special Note: Deadline date for registrations and luncheons reservations is to be paid before July 17, 2020 for Grande in Keshena. No payment will be accepted at the Grande. We must give a final count for the luncheons after the deadline date – no exceptions. Room reservation deadline is: July 6, 2020. Banquet ticket deadline is: July 24, 2020.

Dates to remember: King Day – June 21, 2020; 40 ET 8 Days at Camp American Legion – June 26-27, 2020; Grande Rendezvous – Keshena– August 6-9, 2020; Nationale – San-dusky, Ohio – September 15--19, 2020

Spring is coming soon! Let us wish for warmer weather and better tomorrows.

I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their help and support for the Grande de Wisconsin.

Cabane No. Renewals 2020 Percentage Goal

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Vet-erans Affairs (WDVA) was awarded the Abraham Lincoln Pillars of Excellence Award today for its Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program (VORP). The award, which recognizes outstanding programs that support veterans, was presented to WDVA Sec-retary Mary Kolar at the 2020 National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA) Mid-Winter Conference today.

VORP is a comprehensive, coordinated outreach, treatment and recovery support program that brings together government and community resources to eliminate barriers for veterans who are struggling.

“We’re making a difference in our communities with this innovative program,” WDVA Secretary Mary Kolar said. “There are many instances where the VORP outreach team has helped to prevent sui-cide, homelessness, or the loss of a job. We’ve helped hundreds of veterans successfully complete treatment programs, and we’ve stood by them as they’ve re-ceived medical services and as they’ve healed and recovered. Then, we’ve provided them with the tools they need to be successful after.”

The hallmark of VORP is its reliance on WDVA staff’s direct contact with veterans in need, focusing first on developing a trusting relationship. VORP outreach and recovery coordinators work as case managers, each assigned to a specific geographic region. They work with veterans wherever they are located, including shelters, motels, and uninhabitable areas such as streets, rail yards, cars they call home, or remote forest and river bank areas throughout Wisconsin.

VORP outreach and recovery coordinators build vast regional networks of community partners across the state that offer a broad array of programs and services. They work with key local partners includ-ing housing programs, mental health and substance use services and veteran organizations to help par-ticipants obtain stable housing, connect to proper healthcare and ensure that healthcare is continual and effective.

Since April 2018, VORP has assisted over 1,000 participants with life-sustaining services. More than 1,500 connections to community resources have been

made while VORP provided over 3,000 direct ser-vices including emergency housing, transportation, financial assistance and treatment for those unable to obtain substance use disorder rehabilitation through the VA health system.

June 25th – 28th will be the 51st anniversary of this very special event. More than likely there will be some changes this coming year. Due to the Camp being closed on Sunday due to budget restraints, we won’t be going out there for breakfast. It’s also closed on most Saturdays.

Had the pleasure of speaking with Camp Director Don Grundy at the Camp Board meeting in Baraboo in

January. I’ll tell everyone right now that Don is under a lot of pressure running the Camp and keeping it under budget. Currently he has no cooks for the start of the year. Jay’s wife passed away and Darrell would like to retire from said position. That and dealing with the DNR, County and State building inspectors, keeping everything zoned properly and a thousand other things, we all need to give Don credit for all that he has accomplished over these last few years.

The Rustic Manor in St. Germain has 38 rooms. They are sold out. However come the 1st or 2nd week of May, 6 rooms might open up that were part of a block. If you don’t have reservations, call and ask for either Mike or Denise and let them know you are part of the 40 et 8 Veterans organization.

For those of us arriving on Thursday, we’ll be socializ-ing and possibly going out to eat a little later that evening along with more camaraderie.

Friday morning some of us will be leaving at 8:30 A.M. for the Three Lakes Winery. Many have said it’s the best winery in Wisconsin. Possible a side trip for shopping in Eagle River on the way back! At 11:00 A.M. there will be a short Committee on Committee meeting on the front lawn for the purpose of choosing those who wish to be considered for a National appointment. This will take

about 15 minutes. And that is it for meetings! At 1:30 P.M. we will start the Bean Bag Tournament

with a double elimination format. The Friday afternoon picnic (snacks and finger foods) is in conjunction with the tournament. Don’t forget that Chef Jim and Presidente Beth get to ride the pink pig this year! For those still hun-gry after the picnic, there are numerous restaurants and eateries within walking distance. Can’t forget Don Em-ley’s bonfire later that evening behind the Rustic Manor!

Saturday morning there is a tour of the Camp at 9:00 A.M. and this is also the time of the fishing tournament. Pontoon boats have been reserved for us that morning. At 10:30 A.M., Timbers will be open for those who like their bloody marys. Some are planning a shopping trip to nearby Minocqua while others plan on boating on one of the nearby lakes.

At 3:00 P.M. we will be meeting at the Rainbow Flowage where we’ll be making donations to the Camp. Director Don is scheduled to be there. Our cuisine Chef’s Jim Vissers, Dale Mitchell and John Helgeson will be frying up hamburgers and brats this year with all of the fixings. There will be bingo provided by Beth Laatsch with assistance from many other Dames. Great food, lots of camaraderie and just a wonderful time. That evening Don Emley will have another one of his bonfires going in the back where we’ll be enjoying everyone’s company.

We have a number of first time Voyageurs coming up from Monroe County. I am sure it won’t be their last time either.

One last item that I am proud to announce; there will be no spur of the moment raffles this year. We are up for a fun time and that is that!

WDVA Receives National Pillars of Excellence Award for Statewide Veterans Mental Health Program

WDVA was honored to accept the Abraham Lin-coln Pillars of Excellence Award for its Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program (VORP)! The award recognizes outstanding programs that support veterans. “We’re making a difference in our communities with this innovative program,” WDVA Secretary Mary Kolar (center) said. “There are many instances where the VORP outreach team has helped to prevent suicide, homeless-ness, or the loss of a job. We’ve helped hundreds of veterans successfully complete treatment pro-grams, and we’ve stood by them as they’ve re-ceived medical services and as they’ve healed and recovered. Then, we’ve provided them with the tools they need to be successful after.”

On January 24th, the 8th annual Dane and Jefferson County Christmas party took place at Doubleday’s in Cottage Grove. The weather did not cooperate. Foggy before the evening began and then before we even sat down to eat the snow storm came. Out of area guests who came this evening were Dave Wegener from West Allis and Doug and Mary Schaller of West Salem. From the proceeds from the raffle, the out of area guests had their meals paid for and the rest of the money went to Keith Lovell who is running for State Vice Commander.
