The February meeting was a huge success! The Second Annual Great White Snake Sale took in a grand total of $405.60 for MHS! While this was less than we had last year, we have no complaints. MHS would like to thank all of you who donated items for the sale, and those who bought thern. Attendance at the meeting was 86 .. 1986 is off to a great start .. Our membership is also up, to Just shy of the 170 mark ..

Refreshments

The refreshments for the February meeting were supplied by Andrea Oster. The rumor that she was trying to buy votes is absolutely not true! Thanks to her fran, MHS for the goodies!

''Help A Hapless Herp"

We had a real nice female Common Boa as an adoptee at the last meeting. There was a lot of interest in her, and the decision was not an easy one. But, we did find a good home for her. where she can hopefully make more boas one of these days. There is nothing as of yet for the March meeting, but who knows what may show up by then. Keep your fingers crossed!

MRS Picnic

The armual MHS picnic has been scheduled for Sunday, August 17. We do not have a place chosen for this yet. Does anyone out there have any ideas? If you do, let one of the Board members know. We also need volunteers to work on the picnic plaming. Step right up!

We have some super meetings planned already for this new year. We also have some great activities planned. Besides the picnic there will be a "show and tell" day again at Como Zoo, in early May. Along with this will be Grand Old Days in June and we will be once again setting up the herp display at the Minnesota State Fair in the DNR Building. We'll have more on these for you soon. But, be sure and keep them in ~nd. There will be no DNR funded field trips this year, but we are working on something a little closer than the past two years. Macalester College lLas some 300 acres in Dakota County, in Inver Grove Heights. The Katherine Ordway Natural History Study Area is the name of the site. It looks like tv1HS will be conducting a herp survey of this area. Again, we'll have more on this later.

Herp Hints

Herp Hints was not too busy at the last meeting. Ted Schave related how he had had two Burmese Pythons in a picnic cooler, and one had apparently suffocated. A lot of us use coolers for transport, and have had no problems e Thoughts?

As annotmced at the February meeting, we would like to nm a short biography on each candidate for MHS office in the Newsletter. Hopefully, this will become a regular item each springe Only a few were received by the deadline, so here they are:

Ann Porwoll - Vice-President I have worked my way up from a Fotmding Member to Member-at-Large, Secretary, and now Vice-President. I would like to continue in this office, where I will work to arrange new and interesting programs. I like most herps with my main interest being tortoises and turtles.

Jim Gerholdt - Newsletter Editor I am a Founding Member and have been Newsletter Editor for 5 years. I have worked in zoos for over 13 years and presently serve on the AAZPA Antivenin Committee and the SSP Group for the Aruba Island Rattlesnake. My main interest is rattlesnakes and I have kept herps for 30 odd years.

Pat Encinosa - Member-at-Large I have been a zoo keeper since 1980 and presently work at the Minnesota Zoo. I have been working with reptiles for 14 years and recently started a business breeding reptiles and amphibians.

Aaron Hampton - Member-at-Large MHS member for 3 years. Biology graduate from university of Wisconsin at River Falls. I have worked with herps for 4 years and have about 30 animals at present. I want to be more active in MHS and if elected would do just that.

There was no raffle at the February meeting due to the Second Annual Great White Snake Sale. The items we had left over from the sale will be used as our raffle items at future meetings. Even so, if you have anything you would like to donate to MHS for raffle use, please do so.

EDITOR'S NOTE: As you can see from our 1985 financial statement (ably prepared by MHS Treasurer Sally Brewer) MHS had a super year in 1985. Our income was way up, and we finished the year with considerably more cash on hand than we started with. Our biggest jumps in income carne in memberships and rodent sales. The fact that the seminar/banquet showed a profit was a big plus for _ us. The biggest jump in expenses was in printing. Some of this was due to the first issue of the Occasional Papers, but most of it was because of the Newsletter. Again, we ask if anyone our there has an "in" where we could get reduced rates on our printing. If you do, please let one of the Board members know.

The proposed amendment to the constitution will make the immediate Past President a non-elected member of the MH.S Board. The purpose of the amendment is to reserve the four Member-at-Large seats on the Board as elected positions that can be used a a training ground for future officers of the Society ~ However, it is very desirable to retain the experience of the Past President in directing the Society. It is for these reasons that the MH.S Board of Directors is proposing the following amendments:

CONSTITUrION Article IV - Administration

Change from: The MHS shall be a~nistered by the Board of Directors comprised of the elected officers and four (4 ) active members at large, one of whom should be the immediate past president.

Change to: The MHS shall be a~nistered by the Board of Directors comprised of the elected officers, tour (4) active members at large and the immediate past president.

BY - lAWS Article V - Officers & Co~ttees Section 506

Change from: The Board of Directors shall consist of the officers of MHS and four (4) active members at large, one (1) of whom should be the immediate past president ..

Change to: The Board of Directors shall consist of the officers of MHS, four (4) active members at large, and the immediate past president ..

For those of you who may have noticed something different about this issue of the MHS Newsletter, yes we have a new typewriter. Our new tmit is an Underwood 3500 electric. It has a lot of features that our old one lacked. Probably the most important one is the carbon ribbon. This should give us a better quality of printing on the Newsletter. It also has a better correction featU!e, which I use an awful lot. The old typewriter will now go to the MHS Secretary.

The MHS Library continues to grow. New books 'recently purchased with MHS ftmds are:

Snake Breeding Data

by

Joel Eidbo

Over the course of the last four years, I have become more and more interested in breeding snakes. By the stmmer of 1985, with the cooperation of Henry Cohen, as well as John Martin and John Meltzer, I had accumulated breeding infonnation on 12 species of snakes. in 5 cases, only a single breeding was recorded. In the rest, multiple breedings took place. The only major goal of recording the myriad of numbers you will find before you in the tables is to establish some base= lines. For example, do all snakes shed prior to laying eggs, and if so, is it possible to tell how soon after shedding they will lay? Another piece of information I wanted to gather is the relative fertility of captive-bred eggs versus wild caught. In any event, this is just a start. I hope to add a lot more numbers to the tables in the next few years, and maybe establish a few guidelines in the process.

Most of the information in the tables is self-explanatory; the units for egg measurement are centimeters. I include in this report a copy of the data form that I have sort of evolved over the last few years. If any of you are successful in breeding snakes this spring and are interested, please copy this form and use it to record as much information as you can about the species you are breeding. Send a copy of the data to me, and I'll include it (with all due recognition) in the next breeding report.

In one of the tables there seems to be some discrepancy; where it is recorded, the adult female snake appears to have lost less weight than would account for all her eggs. This is no error, though, and as near as I can guess, the difference is due to the rapid absorption of water by the freshly laid eggs.

Finally, although many of the information categories are pretty bare, more infonnation will fill them out, and it is important information--I think.
