District Music Festival By Jenny Hofer

Drums, trumpets, clarinets, flutes, and saxophones! What do you find when you find all these instruments? You find a talented, well-instructed band like the Melstone Concert Band who competed at the Lincoln Center in Billings for the District Music Festival. It took place on March 26th. They received a superior on their performance and sight reading! On April 8th, Brayden also played two solos at Skyview receiving superiors. Kathy Eike was his accompa-nist. Way to go Melstone Concert Band!

Oz: The Great and Powerful By Sam Collins

On March 8th the newest Walt Disney Pictures movie called Oz: The Great and Powerful came out in theaters. Oz is rated PG with scary images and brief mild language. This is playing at Shiloh 14 in Billings, Montana. Critics say that this movie is not comparable to the original Wiz-ard of Oz but is a great movie for action along with great

special effects! The main characters are Oscar Diggs or Oz, played by James Franco, Mila Kunis as Theo-dora, Michelle Williams as Glinda, and Rachel Wieze as Evanora. This movie doesn’t follow the original story line of the movie the Wizard of Oz but takes a different path about a man instead of a young girl. The story begins with Oscar Diggs, a young circus magician, who gets taken away from Kansas and ends up in the land of Oz. On his way through Oz, he encounters many people and must learn who he can trust and who he can’t. Through all his journey he makes himself a bet-ter man and a great musician.

3rd Quarter HONOR ROLL

Honor Roll Trip By Sam Collins

Is honor roll really a big deal to the students of Melstone School? The Melstone students do strive to make honor roll because they know with their hard work, there will be a reward. With forty-three students being on the honor roll in one of 2012-2013’s first, second, or third quarter honor roll list, Melstone School decide to take a trip in honor of the hard work students have done. Jackie Newman, as chaperone, and Barb Hillman, as bus driver, took thirty-nine of the forty-three students on Thursday, March 28th. While at the Reef, the students went down water slides, sat in the hot tub, rode the waves of the wave pool, had a game of water basketball, and played in the kid’s area. Everyone ran around and had fun for around three hours. Then they all gathered back on the bus and headed to Wal-Mart and Little Caesar’s Pizza. The students each got their drink, and pizza boxes and bread sticks were passed up and down the rows of the bus. They stopped at Wal-Mart where some of the BPA students ran in to col-lect a few last minute sup-plies for the followings day’s Daddy/ Daughter Dance. After this, they headed back to Melstone and made it by 3:30 p.m. Students reported to have had a great day of fun!

FFA Happenings Submitted by Laura Hansen

On the 3rd of April, eight-een FFA members from the Melstone chapter traveled to Billings to compete at State. The senior members competed in events ranging from Farm Business Manage-ment to Livestock Judg-ing. The newer freshmen competed in some of these same events but also Creed speaking and Star Greenhand.

This year Brayden Wacker was the lone Melstone contest-ant to perform two piano solos. (“Hallelujah” by Jeff Buck-ley and “Miss Me” by Andy Grammer) He also earned the opportunity to perform at the State Degree dinner where Jordan Kirby received his State Degree pin. Our newer members, the freshmen, did very well this year. Aspen Checketts competed in Creed speaking, Star Green-hand, and Livestock Judging. She earned a spot on the finals stage. Aspen ended up taking 3rd place in Creed speaking and received a gold rating in the Star Green-hand. Rebecca Turley also competed in Creed speaking as well as Livestock Judging. Kaylee Adams competed in Me-chanics and Livestock Judging. Travis Hofer, the only freshmen boy in FFA, also competed in Mechanics and Livestock Judging. Good job to all you freshmen and to you older members. At state this year our advisor, Mr. Braaten, had the honor to host the Food Science contest which he also hosted at the John Deere Ag Expo. With the help from the Melstone members who were waiting for their next contest, Mrs. Hjelvik, and Mrs. Hackett from Stevensville, this event went off without a hitch. Thank you guys very much! Our chapter also submitted a Hall of Chapters Board and a scrapbook which went along the state theme of “Leave a Legacy.” Thank you to everyone who helped with it. It was much appreciated. This year our Food Science team has the honor of traveling to Louisville, KY to compete at National FFA. This would not have happened without their hard work and the com-munity’s support of the Melstone FFA. Thank you to eve-ryone who has participated in our fundraisers and to all who have donated their time and money to any FFA mem-ber. Like every year, our school will be having the Activities Banquet in which our FFA members will receive all the plaques they have won over the year, and our sponsors will be honored as well. This banquet will be held on April 30th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym. Remember FFA members, we need you to bring a desert dish per member family.

Bikes for Books By Jenny Hofer

Read a book—win a bike! Is it possible? It is with Bikes for Books. This reading encouragement program is sponsored by the Montana Masonic Foundation and your local Ma-sonic Lodge. The contests started on March 1, 2013. All students had to do was read. The winners were Koye Rindal in the 1st and 2nd, John Main in the 3rd and 4th , and Christopher Bradley in the 5th and 6th. The kids can pick a bike up to $100 and pay the difference if they wish to get one with a higher price.

Legislative Trip By Sam Collins

On April 11th, the juniors and seniors of Melstone High School took a trip to Helena. Mr Eike went as advisor, and Mr. Braaten went as bus driver and organizer. The bus departed Melstone at 6:00 a.m. and arrived back to Melstone that night at 8:15 p.m. Along the way the bus stopped at Ray’s in Harlowtown and the Cenex in Town-send. When arriving in Helena at 10:30 a.m. everyone ate at Jorgensons. After eating they made their way to the Capital Building were they looked at the original painted pictures in each important and much used room. Then Musselshell’s local representative, Tom Berry, had a short meeting with them where he went over the way a bill passes. They also saw the priceless and largest pic-ture ever drawn by C.M. Russell. After this some watched the House of Representatives in session, while others watched the Senate in session. Next everyone made their way to the Supreme Court. There they got a tour by two of the court’s clerks, who showed us some of the clerks’ and judges’ offices. The clerks also explained the different courts, what different judges do, and how many cases the Supreme Court usually takes a year. After this tour they all loaded on the bus and drove by the Governor’s Mansion. Everyone left having learned something new.

March 28th the Melstone BPA chapter hosted the Daddy/Daughter Dance at the Mel-stone Community Center. The night was filled with dancing, good music, and wonderful desserts. All and all we had a good turnout. Thank you to all who came and took part in this night. Also, the pictures from the photo booth are now in. If you have not picked yours up yet, please contact Mrs. Wack-er to receive yours.

April 11th we held the annual Talent Night and dinner consisting of Indian tacos. The talents ranged from singing to gymnastics and from drawing to telling jokes. Who knew Melstone had so much talent?! Thank you to all of you who were in the show and to all of you who came to

watch.

Also since track has started, the BPA chapter has been providing concessions for the home track meets. These fundraisers make it possible for our chapter to travel to Nationals each year. Thank you, the community, for your support, donations of time and money, and your participa-tion with these fundraisers. In essence without you, the community, we would not be able to do what we do. Thank you!

April is here and it’s practically spring, minus the snow that just doesn’t seem to want to go away. We chose a light strawberry and spinach salad that is

made to serve four people.

2 Tablespoons sesame seeds 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup olive oil

1/4 cup distilled vinegar 1/4 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon minced onion

10 ounces fresh spinach, rinsed, dried, and torn into bit size pieces

1 quart strawberries– cleaned, hulled, and sliced 1/4 cup almonds, blanched and slivered

In a medium bowl, whisk together the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, sugar, olive oil, vinegar, paprika, Worcestershire

sauce, and onion. Cover and chill for one hour. Next, in a large bowl, combine the spinach strawberries, and almonds. Pour dressing over salad and toss. Refrigerate for

10-15 minutes before serving.

On March 23rd, Breanainn Champlain represent-ed Musselshell County in the State Spelling Bee

at MSU-B.
