Socially and culturally ascribed gender roles and responsibilities however, largely determine how men and women each experience the effects of climate change. It is critical that the different options men and women pursue to reduce vulnerability in the face of a changing climate are understood to inform strategy and policy. This takes robust participatory research skills and effective use of qualitative tools to collect, synthesize and analyze data that throw light on how men and women are adapting to climate change and ensuring food security. The World Agroforestry Centre, the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), and CARE Internationalhave launched a Gender and Inclusion Toolbox to enable the integration of gender into climate change projects. “This manual introduces a wide range of participatory strategies and tools for research to guide the implementation of climate smart agriculture and efforts to achieve food security in rural communities,” said Margaret Kroma, Assistant Director General, Partnerships & Impact. “It is intended for NGO practitioners and programme designers interested in diagnostic and action research for gender sensitive and socially inclusive climate change programmes.” About 50 participants drawn from academia, research and development organizations were present at the launch of the manual held on 15 October 2014 at the ICRAF campus in Nairobi, Kenya. Over 160 participants from around the world also followed the event on live- stream. Recent years have witnessed increased frequency and severity of climate extremes affecting men and women in rural areas who mainly depend on agriculture for their livelihoods and food security

Socially and culturally ascribed gender roles and responsibilities however largely determine how men and women each experience the effects of climate change It is critical that the different options men and women pursue to reduce vulnerability in the face of a changing climate are understood to inform strategy and policy This takes robust participatory research skills and effective use of qualitative tools to collect synthesize and analyze data that throw light on how men and women are adapting to climate change and ensuring food security

The World Agroforestry Centre the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and CARE Internationalhave launched a Gender and Inclusion Toolbox to enable the integration of gender into climate change projects

ldquoThis manual introduces a wide range of participatory strategies and tools for research to guide the implementation of climate smart agriculture and efforts to achieve food security in rural communitiesrdquo said Margaret Kroma Assistant Director General Partnerships amp Impact ldquoIt is intended for NGO practitioners and programme designers

interested in diagnostic and action research for gender sensitive and socially inclusive climate change programmesrdquo

About 50 participants drawn from academia research and development organizations were present at the launch of the manual held on 15 October 2014 at the ICRAF campus in Nairobi Kenya Over 160 participants from around the world also followed the event on live-stream Presenters included Sibyl Nelson of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Nafisa Ferdous of CCAFS and ICRAF and Agnes Otzelberger of CARE International

On 10 September 2014 high-level Irish Aid delegates and the Irish

Ambassador to Ethiopia visited ICRAFrsquos latest research site in Tigray

Northern Ethiopia The delegation included Mr Aidan OrsquoHara Irish

Ambassador to Ethiopia Mr Michael Gaffey Director General of Irish

Aid Mr Paul Sherlock Head of Development at the Embassy of Ireland

in Ethiopia Mr Niall Burgess Secretary General of the Department

of Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr Fergal Mythen Director General of

Corporate Services and Mr John Conlon Director General of Finance at

Irelandrsquos Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

During the visit delegates participated in a tree planting event at

the indigenous arboretum at Damyno Primary School which was

established by ICRAF They also visited the watershed where ICRAF will

implement various activities in the next three years This new initiative

aims at improving watershed management and food security for over

1800 families living in Geregera Watershed in Tigray one of the regionrsquos

most severely degraded landscapes

ICRAFrsquos Global Programme on Development of Alternative Biofuel Crops

has been receiving attention from various governments and institutions

Recently Dr Babita Bohra Programme Scientific Officer was invited to

participate in a workshop dubbed ldquoNepal Energy Gardens Ambassadorsrsquo

Workshoprdquo where the country is replicating the Hassan Biofuel Model

in collaboration with University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore

Through her presentation ldquoSmart Agroforestry Systems Bioenergy and

Livelihoodsrdquo ICRAFrsquos current work on the biofuel model was publicized

A diverse group of stakeholders participated in the one-day workshop

including Nepalrsquos Minister for Renewable Energy and other government

officials Andrew Sparkes the Mission Head of UK in Nepal DFID the

University of Leeds and rural communities from three districts

The Honourable Minister of Renewable Energy Ms Radha Kumari

Gyawali made a presentation and noted that the government would

continue to support the programme

In a separate event in Bangalore the Biofuels team participated in a

strategic meeting on the role of financial institutions in scaling up biofuel

programmes Participants who included Dr Harsh Kumar Bhanwala

Chairman of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development

(NABARD) and Latha Krishna Rao G Commissioner of Rural Development

also discussed the possibility of converting the programme into a

bankable proposal Dr Navin Sharma Director Biofuels Programme also

made a presentation on ICRAFrsquos activities

The 12th United Nations Convention on Biodiversity Conference of the Parties or CBD COP 12 was held in Pyeongchang Rebublic of Korea between 6th and 17th October 2014 with the theme ldquoBiodiversity for Sustainable Developmentrdquo

Following the evolution of the ICRAF library to Information Management and Digital Services the physical library has been temporarily closed An appraisal of information materials held by the library both in the archives and the physical library was conducted and various institutions (academic and research) given an opportunity to select information materials that they might be interested in ICRAF subject specialists from the SDs were the first to review materials for donation before the invitation was extended to the outside world We are still retaining current and frequently borrowed materials so normal library services will continue even as we plan to introduce more dynamic digital library services

The 12th United Nations Convention on Biodiversity Conference of the Parties or CBD COP 12 was held in Pyeongchang Rebublic of Korea between 6th and 17th October 2014 with the theme ldquoBiodiversity for Sustainable Developmentrdquo

Following the evolution of the ICRAF library to Information Management and Digital Services the physical library has been temporarily closed An appraisal of information materials held by the library both in the archives and the physical library was conducted and various institutions (academic and research) given an opportunity to select information materials that they might be interested in ICRAF subject specialists from the SDs were the first to review materials for donation before the invitation was extended to the outside world We are still retaining current and frequently borrowed materials so normal library services will continue even as we plan to introduce more dynamic digital library services

Hobbies Swimming My favourite tree is Acacia mearnsii (wattle tree) because when I was a young girl we depended on it for firewood charcoal and fencing Farmers sold the bark for leather tannin our livestock fed on the leaves and pods helliphellipand the best part of it ndash the gum that oozed from the bark was such a delicacy I would harvest the slightly hardened gum and have it as a snack ndash very delicious
