Abbot Jerome visits Brazil in August, 1982During two weeks of August, 1982,I again

visited our team in Maceio, Brazil. Father Bernard Stauber, who had been at St. Peter's fortwo years, was returning to resume his apostolate in Brazil. We traveled together by air viaSaskatoon, Toronto, New York, Rio and thenlanded at Maceio airport where we weregreeted by the team, Father Sylvester andSisters Maria Doepker, OSU, ClaireNovecosky, OSU, and Dolores Jansen, OSE.

There would be very many things I couldreport, but I'll have to restrict myself to a few.

The gratitude and appreciation for thepresence of the team and their contribution tothe people was expressed again and again asI visited the 5 parishes and communities inwhich they work on the occasion of the SundayMass or other special festivity.

The Archbishop, Dom Miguel, did thesame, publicly during a Mass in his cathedralduring a special celebration, and privately ata farewell at his home on the evening before Ireturned to Canada.

One of the real highlights was my visit tothe farm a couple hours drive from Maceio. This farm is the property of the Archdioceseand its care and development was entrusted toFather Sylvester about 3 years ago. There areabout 120families living on 1400acres, so eachfamily can farm very few acres. I got to thenew school, where the Mass was to be, onhorseback (for about a mile) since it was therainy season and cars could not get that close. The last lap included crossing a small river ina tiny boat out of which the water had first tobe dipped.

There is a community centre and a schoolin one building, and its presence is mainly dueto the initiative of Father Sylvester, as is thepresence of electricity. He was also beginningto build a cistern for storage of water for theschool, which is necessary during the dry season, and was planning a manioc factory tomake a sort of flour, since the manioc can begrown right there. Both have now been completed.

Father Sylvester has organized the peoplein such a way that they are pretty well incharge of the changes on the farm, but he isoften consulted on many different items.

I had supper at one of the nearby homes, and slept at the school in one of the classroomsthat evening. Next day Fathers Sylvester andBernard and Antonio and I - all on horseback- rode around the farm looking at the crops, the corn, potatoes, rice and various fruit trees, oranges, lemons, bananas, avocada, andcoconuts, the vegetable gardens (lettuce, sweetpotatoes, squash, and others native to Brazil). There is a tractor now to help, but almost allthe work on the fields is done by hand.

A third event was the dinner just outsidethe church of Sao Jose on a Sunday afternoon, organized and carried out by the parishionersthemselves, and done very well, with abundantfood of various kinds, and music too. This couldnot really have happened 15 years ago, and itis a tribute both to the team who have taughtthe people to make use of their talents and ability, and to the people who are so willing to learnand work together.

Brother Stanley Vindevoghel

Appointed dean

Brother Stanley Vindevoghel has been appointed the new dean of students at st. Peter'sCollege. He succeeds Father Albert Ruetz, whowill continue as sports supervisor and teacherof mathematics.

Brother Stanley received his BA, with amajor in sociology, from the University ofSaskatchewan. With one more class he willcomplete his BSW degree from the Universityof Regina. He is a member of the SaskatchewanAssociation of Social Workers.

A ten minute walk from the parish housewould bring me to the Atlantic Ocean. Severaltimes I went there to see the vast expanse ofwater, the restless waves rolling in on theshore, to watch the many young boys playingsoccer on the sandy beach (that's no doubt whyBrazil soccer teams are always among the bestin the world), to feel the cool salty breeze blowinland. That's why the beaches are so well Prior to his involvement with the college,pa tronized, since it takes the people a way from Brother Stanley was press manager and printerthe usual heat of the city. for St. Peter's Press.

At the annual Mount Carmel pilgrimage,July 17, Abbot Jerome gave Father Sylvesterand Rosilda an opportunity to express theirthanks to the people of the Abbacy.

Throughout the sixteen years of his workin Brazil, Father Sylvester has attempted tocombine the spiritual and the temporal<specifically social improvement) both in hisministry and in the lives of his parishioners.

The following paragraph comes near theend of a report by Eileen Saunders in the July31, 1983, Prairie Messenger:

"It is this work, with the local people, thatforms the basis of the mission's work in Maceio.Father Sylvester said that since he and AlvinHergott founded the mission team there, inJanuary, 1967, the emphasis has been on trying to develop a stronger sense of communityin every part of the parish. And this year, hesaid, about 50 lay visitators are being trained. They hope to go out to all the homes that havenever been visited.
