DEAR PARTNERS AND COLLEAGUES,
Let me introduce myself to all of you as the new president of good neighbors.
I began work here in 1995, and built a career in various fields such as
fundraising, project planning, and general management. On July 1, 2016, i was
appointed as the new president by the board members.
Thanks to your love and support, good neighbors has been able to improve
the lives of children in need from 38 countries. With that in mind, i want to
promise that i will work more hard to ensure sustainable development in our
projects by developing effective project models with good neighbors local
communities.
in April, good neighbors held the 2016 international Meeting on Management
Strategy attended by the directors of field countries. The goals of the meeting
was to explore specific programs and strategies that would encourage local
communities to bring about change through Community Development
Projects.
in May, good neighbors participated in the Un DPi/ngO Conference to share
information with related agencies pertaining to girls' education and the
rights of children, as well as to discuss practical action plans. in June, good
neighbors joined the UnhCr Annual Consultation with ngO to seek ways to
drive behavior change and forge humanitarian results of policies for refugees,
particularly the young ones who are in great need of international interest and
assistance.
As a responsible ngO specializing in international development and relief,
good neighbors will continue in efforts to be transparent in project results.

We are supporting local communities to live on their own by helping
them create social enterprises and cooperatives, which are the basis of
sustainable communities.
The case in point is Café de gisagara, which is a social enterprise selling coffee
cherries established by good neighbors in rwanda in 2014. The gisagara
district of rwanda is near Mukiza where good neighbors CDP(Community
Development Project) is being carried out. The area is known for its excellence
in coffee cherries. Some cooperative members, however, were suffering from
poor money circulation. The members were not paid until the coffee cherries
that they had bought in advance were sold. They had to almost give up the
business because they were always in great shortage
of cash. in addition, the lack of

Self-reliance is the ability to depend on yourself and stand on your own feet. it encompasses the
willingness and persistence to overcome existing obstacles. We have sought good change of local
communities with sustainable development achieved by good neighbors who are eager to learn and
work hard to generate income.
WHAT IS NEEDED mOST IN COmmUNITIES?
knowledge on coffee farming led to unguaranteed quality, which, in
turn, caused low income. We recognized those problems and founded Café
de gisagara to provide practical support for the community.
To fix the problems arising from those cooperatives, Café de Gisagara
imparted knowledge related to coffee farming from growing to harvesting
to local communities while stabilizing facilities and enhancing technologies
through a long-term lease of the primary processing facility called Washing
Station. it all led to higher yield and quality, which resulted in income
generation.
Café de gisagara paid cash right away for the coffee cherries that the
members sold in advance. They used to suffer from the shortage of cash,
which directly led to their living conditions. They had to wait for a long
time to have cash in their hands because they sold raw coffee cherries
to middlemen or processing company at a low price or in exchange for a
promissory note where they could not receive payment until their products
were actually bought by global consumers. however, the new system
of payment ensured a stable economic life for the farmers. Café
de gisagara is expected to increase the yield of coffee cherries
from 1.13kg to 3kg per tree through more advanced farming
techniques, helping the cooperative members to stand on
their own feet economically.

Good Neighbors field countries has cooperatives, groups aimed at income
generation based on the leadership of local communities.
The Thmar Koul CDP in Cambodia has a total of 98 local communities as
cooperative members. The Thmar Koul CDP of good neighbors Cambodia
has been networking with district governments, with a view to improving
the livelihood of local communities since May 2015. They have conducted
income generation projects via micro business plans designed to educate
the participants on how to manage savings and revolving funds and how to
calculate profits and losses of business.
Mr. PUY Pirom(47) is living with his wife Dara(45) and four children at Takrom
village in Cambodia. he started to grow rice, but there was still a long way
to go in terms of income generation. That is why his 22-year-old eldest one
began to work at a factory and his second daughter(15) had to quit school.
Mr. Pirom received training as a member of CDC to overcome the economic
difficulties. He chose sugarcane instead of rice, which helped his income
to grow incrementally. he had never grown sugarcane, but he learned
how to grow them, make juice with them, and sell them for profit from the
Community Development Program manager. When he was suggested to
join the CDC from the village leader, he was worried about an uncertain
future. now, however, he can smile, he and his wife earn in average 50,000-
60,000 riels (USD $15) per day.
Good Neighbors helps with the establishment of fledgling cooperatives,
supports cooperative members to lead overall operation and fund
management, and takes initiative in founding social enterprises to support
cooperative activities.
To achieve effective results, good neighbors should provide constant
assistance for technical matters while encouraging cooperative members to
have the will to survive and the voluntary participation to grow and attract
more support from others in order to run better cooperatives and create
better local environments.
The hard work and attempts to stand on one’s own feet is bringing about
change little by little to local communities and cooperative members. And
next to them is the social enterprise of good neighbors. good neighbors
will continue to be with those taking the opportunity and walking toward
sustainable growth in earnest with great hope in their mind for a better
future.
good neighbors has established and operated four social enterprises including Mongolia, Cambodia,
nepal, and rwanda. good neighbors are pursuing social economic development based on voluntary
economic activities of local communities powered by cooperation and self-reliance of the local
communities. Our social economic development is divided into income generation via cooperatives
and social enterprise projects, also including appropriate technology projects.
* Social economic development seeks to maintain a balanced perspective on social and economic values and pursues income generation and a better economic structure of local communities.

[FIELD REPORT 1]
in Tanzania, this is not a story only limited to Kundi. There are many families
that experienced maternal or child death even though they used health
centers in their villages. The small health centers lack prescription drugs and
medical personnel. The facilities are too decrepit to cope with emergencies
when pregnant patients are in urgent need of medical surgeries. Many
times, in addition, pregnant women did not have enough information on
how to deal with a series of unexpected problems that could happen during
the whole process of labor and delivery.
The Tanzanian government took measures by having two Community health
Workers (ChWs) elected in each village to take care of pregnant women, but
the policy was not properly implemented due to limited budget and human
resources. even the ChWs were deployed, they were not able to get their job
done adequately.
good neighbors Tanzania supports ChWs with bicycles, bags, shirts and
other necessary articles, and provides education on basic health care for
villagers to help them stay healthy and avoid diseases. it is also working in
cooperation with KOiCA, the health Ministry of Tanzania, and municipalities
in order to upgrade deteriorating medical facilities and nurture medical
personnel through projects that improve the environment of health centers
and district hospitals or that educate medical personnel to be able to provide
Basic Obstetric and newborn Care (BemOnC).
The ChWs pay a door-to-door visit to local communities regularly. The home
visit begin during the antenatal period, and continue until the child turns age
of six weeks, while helping them have prenatal and postnatal education and
making sure that delivery happens in a hospital. The prenatal and postnatal
education provided by the ChWs is crucial since it provides essential and
basic information for mothers and babies and helps them protect against
harmful effects.

Kundi began to hang a calabash* around
her neck a month ago. She gave birth to tiny,
lovely twin daughters weighing 1.5kg in early
February this year, but unfortunately, she lost
the elder one right after the birth. She is still
reeling from the grief and shock of the loss.
What happened to Kundi?
* Kundi had a calabash around her neck to remember the death of her child. it is a
cultural rite in Kishapu district of Tanzania where the mother wears a calabash necklace
when one of the twins dies and then passes it down to the other one of the twins when
he or she grows up. it means that the other daughter of Kundi will wear the calabash
necklace someday instead of her mother.
“The maternal health projects of Good Neighbors are reducing risk factors by allowing pregnant women to
have access to necessary childbirth information through CHWs, to realize the importance of prenatal and
postnatal care, and to avoid home birth.”

There are also those people, as well as the ChWs, who discuss the importance
of prevention, being concerned about the health care of the neighbors in
Tanzania. The volunteers who participated in the Photo Voice program is 48
people from five villages were able to learn and share their opinions, ideas
on topics that affect the health of their communities especially on maternal
health issues.
Agnes, one of the participants, took the pictures of a pregnant woman being
treated to let people know about the significance of prenatal care and a
dad feeding his child to emphasize that the role of a husband is crucial. The
people say that they realized how important prenatal and postnatal care and
the role of husbands are through the Photo Voice program. The husbands
who used to be unwilling to help with household chores started to make
efforts to improve the health of their wives and children.

[FIELD REPORT 1]
There is still a lack of basic medical facilities, but the
steady effort and considering activities of the ChWs are
expected to be a sustainable solution instead of simply
building hospitals. The pregnant women in Tanzania will
not have to take the risk of losing their baby as long as
local communities can work to build their capacity to
resolve their issues on their own together with the ChWs
and the advocacy voices. good neighbors will continue
to implement a variety of support activities in every
corner of each village to ensure a safe and maternity-
friendly environment.
“Raising a child is not just the responsibility of the mother. The father has the responsibility to help the
mother in raising the children. This picture shows the father feeding their baby porridge while the mother is
cooking. This is good because the father and mother are helping each other to raise their baby, and the father isn’t leaving the mother to do everything by herself.”

and adolescents to identify and solve challenging situations on their own
while at the same time raise awareness of adults through campaigns.

her parents from marrying her off because the family was struggling with
poverty. now she is serving as one of the most active campaigners against
early marriage, hoping that other girls like her, can avoid such tragedy.
DREAm PROJECT FOR CHILDREN IN BANGLADESH
A world that good neighbors dreams of is where children can live out their dreams and grow up
safely. however, the violence against children across the world, including early marriage, child
labor, and child sex abuse once again reminds us of why good neighbors exist. Let us take a look
at Bangladesh and Kenya where good neighbors is conducting advocacy projects on child rights in
an effort to make a world where every child is respected as a human being and can grow up to be
healthy.

Q. What messages do you want to deliver most in this workshop?
girls have been considered as a victim, but now they are the subjects
who are actually making changes. Students in ‘good Sisters’ are very
active and positive. They are developing activity curriculum and teach
what they have learned to other students. i, as a project manager am
very proud of them, and this is what i wanted to share most.
Q. What would be the most memorable changes in this ‘Good Sisters’
project?
i have seen each girl changing their view on the women. i have met the
leader of local community and encouraging them to be aware on the
women’s right. in the end they were able to participating into legislating
Act on Women Protection. Last year, early Marriage Prevention Act came
into force in Malawi. girls made it by themselves to formulate the legal
devices to protect them. This is highly encouraging.
