    At-a-glance

The first-ever federal health study about sleeping pill usage found that nearly nine million Americans take prescription sleeping pills in pursuit of good night s rest, and rates are highest among the elderly (age 80 and up)

Prescription sleep aids are associated with increased risk of cancer, diabetes, obesity, amnesia, depression, disorientation, and an increased risk of death

Sleeping pills are also associ-ated with bizarre and risky nighttime behaviors such as sleepwalking, sleep driving, sleep eating, and sleep-texting messages you have no memory of send-

    ing the next day

Insomnia comes with its own risks, including increased risk of infection, depression, cancer, and heart disease; sleeping poorly is also associated with junk food cravings and diminished ability to make good food choices

Studies are beginning to show a link between vitamin D level and qual-ity of sleep; optimizing your vitamin D level may improve sleep quality, although more studies are needed to establish the exact mechanism

The first-ever federal health study about sleeping pill usage suggests that sleep is growing ever more elusive for Americans. According to the latest information, between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from sleep depriva-tion, with increasing numbers relying on prescription sleep aids.

The CDC reports that a Na-tional Health Survey, found that

    - Tzippys Tidbits - Dangerous sleeping habits...-nearly nine million Americans take prescription sleeping pills in

pursuit of good night s rest.

Usage differences were found based on age, gender, race and ethnic-ity. The report listed the following key findings:

About four percent of US adults age 20 and above use prescription sleep aids

The percentage of adults using prescription sleep aids increases with age and education; more adult women (5 percent) used prescription sleep aids than adult men (3.1 percent)

Prescription sleep aid use varied by sleep duration and was highest among adults who sleep less than five hours (6.0 percent) or more than nine hours (5.3 percent)

One in six adults with a diag-nosed sleep disorder and one in eight adults with trouble sleeping reported using sleep aids

The hardest hit group is the elderlyseven percent of individuals over the age of 80 are relying on pre-scription sleep aids, including hypnotic drugs and sedating antidepressants.

Interestingly, holocaust survi-vors love night. This is true, as It was the end of suffering for the day.

    Are You Sleeping Better than

    Your Pay Grade?

According to a recent British report, the less education you have and the lower your income, the poorer you tend to sleep.

These trends are quite concerning in light of the fact that the drugs pre-scribed for sleep come with a number of potentially serious risksand they dont work that well for sleep to begin with.

Sleeping pills generally only in-crease the amount of time you sleep by a matter of minutes (a measly 11), and can impair your functioning the next day by making you less alert. They can also have a rebound effectmeaning, once you stop taking them, you may suffer withdrawal symptoms worse than the initial insomnia.

    Who Benefits from Sleeping Pills?

Sleeping pills are a goldmine for the pharmaceutical industry. In 2011 alone, an estimated 40 million prescrip-tions for such drugs were dispensed. In 2011, sales of generic Ambien (zol- pidem

trate) amounted to a whopping $2.8 billion and Lunesta another

$912 million. Prescription sleep aids are some of the most heavily marketed drugs to the public.

Lunestas manufacturer Sepracor spent more than $215 million and added 450 salespeople to its physician marketing staff just to pitch the drug to doctors in 2005, when it was released.

And it paid off. Lunesta generated $329 million in sales its first nine monthswith one sleep specialist saying it was the only time hed ever experienced a line of people outside his door waiting to try a new medicine.

In 2005, Ambien and Ambien CR put close to $2.2 billion into Sanofi-Adventis pockets. Unfortunately, the dangers of these drugs are as impres-sive as the profits they generate for Big Pharma. By taking prescription sleeping pills, you may be unknowingly putting your life in danger.

    Tiny Pills, Big Risks

A startling study in 2012 revealed that people who take sleeping pills are not only at higher risk for certain cancers, but they are also nearly four times as likely to die chv as people who dont take them. The list of health risks from sleeping pills is growing all the time, including the following:

Higher risk of death, including from accidents

    Increased risk of cancer

Increased insulin resistance, food cravings, weight gain and diabetes

Complete amnesia, even from events that occurred during the day

    Depression, confusion, disorien-tation, and hallucinations

Studies recently submitted to the FDA revealed that blood levels of zolpidem (found in sleeping pills) above 50 ng/mL may impair your driving to a degree that increases the risk of an ac-cident. As a result, FDA recommended manufacturers cut the dosage from 10mg to 5mg for immediate-release products and from 12.5 mg to 6.25 mg for extended-release products.

    Are You Sleep-Tweeting?

Aside from increasing your risk for premature death, by taking sleeping pills, you may be in for some extremely awkward experiences. Sleeping pills can cause a variety of strange behavioral reactions that are not only bizarre but also potentially riskyand at the very least embarrassing. The following are being reported with increasing frequency:

    Sleepwalking

    Sleep driving

Sleep eating (including bizarre things like buttered cigarettes, salt sandwiches, or raw meat)

    Sleep-texting or sleep-tweeting

These behaviors, called parasom-nias, are more common when you are stressed or sleep-deprived, but can also be triggered by certain medica-tions, such as sedatives and hypnotics. Reports of sleep-texting are on the rise. Users are shocked to find mes-sages they have no memory of sending. You may want to hide your smart phone from yourself at night.

Lack of sleep decreases leptin (your satiety hormone), while increas-ing ghrelin (your hunger hormone), which explains why night shift workers are at increased risk for obesity and diabetes. If you sleep poorly, you are more likely to crave junk foods and make poor food choices.

    Vitamin D for Sleepless

    Elders

A number of vitamin and mineral deficiencies may contribute to poor sleep, the three most common being potassium, magnesium and vitamin D. This is particularly important when you are older. Studies indicate that vitamin D deficiency in the elderly has reached epidemic levels,

because their skin produces less vitamin D and they spend less time in the sun. In addition to vitamin Ds wide ranging health benefits, new evidence suggests it may play a role in sleep quality. This is a significant finding, as sleep drugs are even riskier for the elderly.

Vitamin D is important for regulating your mood, energy, immune function, cognitive function, and many other things that are especially challenging as you age. It makes sense there would be a sleep connectionaf-ter all, practically everything affects your sleep!

Center in Seattle, reported that sleeping pills are known to cause

people to use digital media in their sleep. Incidentally, people who use digital devices just before nodding off are more likely to use them during the night.

Insomnia Comes with Its Own Risks

It is extremely important to optimize the quality of your sleep, but drugs are not the answer. Just as sleeping pills come with serious risks, so does insomnia. Poor sleep adversely affects your immune system. Lack of sleep may directly increase your risk of developing a number of serious illnesses, such as:

    Viral and bacte-rial infections

    Depression

    Hypertension

    Stomach ulcers

Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and many more

Poor quality sleep is associated with decreased production of mela-tonin, insulin resistance and weight gain. These three factors all contribute to cancer development. Studies have linked poor sleep with diseases in men and women. Even if your sleep is disturbed for only one night, there may be significant health risks. Studies show that losing even one hour of sleep, such as after making the switch to Daylight Saving Time, may increase your risk for a heart attack.

You should keep your serum vitamin D level between 50 and 70 ng/ml year-round, and the

general guideline suggests most adults need about 8,000 IUs of vitamin D per day to achieve serum levels of 40 ng/ml.

It s important to remember that if youre taking high dose vitamin D supplements, you ALSO need to take vitamin K2. The biological role of vitamin K2 is to help move calcium into the proper areas in your body, such as your bones and teeth. It also helps remove calcium from areas where it shouldnt be, such as in your arteries and soft tissues. Vitamin K2 deficiency is actually what produces the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, which includes inappropriate calcification that can lead to hardening of your arteries.

Better Options for a Good Nights Rest

Numerous factors can influence your sleep, and the good news is that many are under your control. Remem-ber that sleeping pills are not the answer and will probably create more problems than they solve. Below are several strategies for optimizing your sleep.

    1. Cover your windows with blackout shades or drapes to ensure complete darkness. Even the tiniest bit of light in your room, such as the glow of a bedside clock, can disrupt your sleep and therefore your melatonin production. Refrain from turning on any light during the night.

    2. Keep the temperature in your bedroom at or below 70 degrees. Many people keep their bedrooms too warm, which can result in restless sleep. Stud-ies show the optimal room temperature for sleeping is fairly cool, between 60

    to 68 degrees F.

    3. Check your bedroom for electro-magnetic fields (EMFs). These can disrupt your pineal glands mela-tonin production. In order to do this, move alarm clocks and other electrical devices away from your head. If these devices must be used, keep them as far away from your bed as possible, prefer-ably at least 3 feet.

    4. Exercise to sleep better, but do it early! Exercising for at least 30 min-utes per day can improve your sleep, but exercising too close to bedtime (generally within the three hours) may keep you awake.

    5. Avoid foods that interfere with sleep. The worst foods for sleep include alcohol, coffee, dark chocolate, spicy foods, and certain fatty foods. L

    Adapted by: Sheila Yosefsohn

There, suspended by one hand be-tween the baggage-car and the tender, with the other he loosened the safety chains; but, owing to the traction, he would never have succeeded in unscrew-ing the yoking-bar, had not a violent concussion jolted this bar out. The train, now detached from the engine, remained a little behind, whilst the locomotive rushed forward with increased speed.

Carried on by the force already acquired, the train still moved for several minutes; but the brakes were worked and at last they stopped, less than a hundred feet from Kearney station.

The soldiers of the fort, attracted by the shots, hurried up; the Sioux had not expected them, and decamped in a body before the train entirely stopped.

But when the passengers counted each other on the station platform sev-eral were found missing; among others the courageous Frenchman, whose devo-tion had just saved them.

    Chapter 30

PHILEAS FOGG SIMPLY DOES HIS DUTY

Three passengers including Passep-artout had disappeared. Had they been killed in the struggle? Were they taken prisoners by the Sioux? It was impossible to tell.

There were many wounded, but none mortally. Colonel Proctor was one of the most seriously hurt; h e had fought bravely, and a shot had entered his leg. He was carried into the station with the other wounded

passengers, to receive such medical attention as could be

    of avail.

Aoud was safe; and Phileas Fogg, who had been in the thickest of the fight, had not received a scratch. Fix was slight-ly wounded in the arm. But Passepartout was not to be found, and tears coursed down freely from the distraught Aouds cheeks.

All the passengers had got out of the train, the wheels of which were stained with blood. From the tires and spokes hung ragged pieces of flesh. As far as the eye could reach on the white plain behind, red trails were visible. The last Sioux were disappearing in the south, along the banks of Republican River.

Mr. Fogg, with folded arms, re-mained motionless. He had a serious de-cision to make. Aoud, standing near him, looked at him without speaking, and he understood his look. If his servant was a prisoner, ought he not to risk everything to rescue him from the Indians? I will find him, living or dead, said he quietly to Aoud.

Ah, Mr.Mr. Fogg! cried he, clasping his hands with an appreciated and thankful embrace.

Living, added Mr. Fogg, if we do not lose a moment.

Phileas Fogg, by this resolution, inevitably sacrificed himself; he pro-nounced his own doom. The delay of a single day would make him lose the steamer at New York, and his bet would be certainly lost. But as he thought, It is my duty, he did not hesitate.

The commanding officer of Fort Kearney was there. A hundred of his sol-

diers had placed themselves in a position to defend the station, should the Sioux attack it.

Sir, said Mr. Fogg to the captain, three passengers have disappeared.

    Dead? asked the captain.

Dead or prisoners; that is the un-certainty which must be solved. Do you propose to pursue the Sioux?

Thats a serious thing to do, sir, returned the captain. These Indians may retreat beyond the Arkansas, and I cannot leave the fort unprotected.

The lives of three men are in ques-tion, sir, said Phileas Fogg.

Doubtless; but can I risk the lives of fifty men to save three?

I dont know whether you can, sir; but you ought to do so.

Nobody here, returned the other, has a right to teach me my duty.

Very well, said Mr. Fogg, coldly. I will go alone.

You, sir! cried Fix, coming up; you go alone in pursuit of the Indians?

Would you have me leave this poor fellow to perishhim to whom every one present owes his life? I shall go.

No, sir, you shall not go alone, cried the captain, touched in spite of himself. No! you are a brave man. Thirty volunteers! he added, turning to the soldiers.

The whole company started forward at once. The captain had

Visiting The World in 80 Days

only to pick his men. Thirty were chosen, and an old ser-

    geant placed at their head.

    Thanks, captain, said Mr. Fogg.

Will you let me go with you? asked Fix.

Do as you please, sir. But if you wish to do me a favor, you will remain with Aoud. In case anything should hap-pen to me

A sudden pallor overspread the detectives face. Separate himself from the man whom he had so persistently fol-lowed step by step! Leave him to wander about in this desert! Fix gazed attentively at Mr. Fogg, and, despite his suspicions and of the struggle which was going on within him, he lowered his eyes before that calm and frank look.

    I will stay, said he.

A few moments after, Mr. Fogg pressed the young mans hand, and, hav-ing confided to him his precious carpet-bag, went off with the sergeant and his little squad. But, before going, he had said to the soldiers, My friends, I will divide five thousand dollars among you, if we save the prisoners.

It was then a little past noon.

Aoud retired to a waiting-room, and there he waited alone, thinking of the simple and noble generosity, the tranquil courage of Phileas Fogg. He had sacri-ficed his fortune, and was now risking his life, all without hesitation, from duty, in silence.

Fix did not have the same thoughts, and could scarcely conceal his agitation. He walked feverishly up and down the

platform, but soon resumed his outward composure. He now saw the folly of which he had been guilty in letting Fogg go alone. What! This man, whom he had just followed around the world, was permitted now to separate himself from him! He began to accuse and abuse him-self, and, as if he were director of police, administered to himself a sound lecture for his greenness.

I have been an idiot! he thought, and this man will see it. He has gone, and wont come back! But how is it that I, Fix, who have in my pocket a warrant for his arrest, have been so fascinated by him? Decidedly, I am nothing but an idiot!

So reasoned the detective, while the hours crept by all too slowly. He did not know what to do. Sometimes he was tempted to tell Aoud all; but he could not doubt how the young man would receive his confidences. What course should he take? He thought of pursuing Fogg across the vast white plains; it did not seem impossible that he might overtake him. Footsteps were easily printed on the snow! But soon, under a new sheet, every imprint would be effaced.

Fix became discouraged. He felt a sort of insurmountable longing to aban-don the game altogether. He could now leave Fort Kearney station, and pursue his journey homeward in peace.

    To be continued beH

A latex is a colloidal suspen-sion of very small polymer particles in water and is used to make rubber.

    History

The Indians of Central and South America used rubber as early as the eleventh century to coat fabric or to make into balls, but it was not until the French scientist Charles de la Condamine visited South America during the 1700s that the first samples were sent back to Europe. Rubber was given its present English name by the British chemist Joseph Priestley in about 1770. The first modern use for rubber was discovered in 1818 by a British medical student named James Syme. Smart Smarter - All About Latexent for his pneumatic tire. As the demand for tires began to

deplete natural rubber supplies, the British cultivated huge rubber plan-tations in Singapore, Malaysia, and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Seeds were taken from Brazil and first germinated in England and then shipped to these countries. Today, all natural rubber produced in Asia comes from trees that are descendants of the Brazilian seeds.

By the early 1900s, various coun-tries sought ways to improve rubber compounds and to develop synthetic materials. In 1910, sodium was found to catalyze polymerization. When the Germans were cut off from natural rubber supplies during World War I, they used this discovery to make about 2,500 tons (2,540 metric tons) of rubber made from dimethylbutadi-ene.

During World War II, the Japanese gained control of the major sources of natural rubber in Asia. In response, the United States synthetic rubber industry increased its production by an astonishing 10,000%, from 7,967 tons (8,130 metric tons) in 1941 to more than 984,000 tons (1 million metric tons) in 1944. Following the war, other countries developed their own synthetic rubber factories to avoid having to rely on overseas rub-ber supplies.

Improvements in synthetic rub-ber have continued, and in addition, higher yielding hybrid trees have been developed that yield twice as much natural latex as the conven-tional ones. In 1971, a tree stimulant was developed that resulted in an average increase of 30% in latex pro-duction with no apparent harm to the trees.

    Natural

Dipped goods (medical and surgi-cal items, household and industrial gloves, boots, and balloons) utilize more than half of all natural latex consumed in the United States. The adhesives industry is the second larg-est user of natural latex in products such as shoes, envelopes, labels, and pressure sensitive tape.

Natural latex with a high solids content is also used for making molds for casting plaster, cement, wax, low temperature metals, and limited run polyester articles. Natural latex has

the ability to shrink around the object to be reproduced, so that the smallest detail will be reproduced in the cast. Latex is even being used to help stabi-lize desert soils to make them suitable for agricultural uses.

Natural latex is produced from the Hevea brasilienesis rubber tree and is the protective fluid contained beneath the bark. It is a cloudy white liquid, similar in appearance to cow milk. It is collected by cutting a thin strip of bark from the tree and allowing the latex to exude into

Hevea trees mature at five to seven years of age and can be tapped for up to 30 years. Rubber yields range around a ton per acre (2.5 tons per ha) on the larger plantations, but yields four times as much are theoretically possible. Trees often are rested for a period after heavy tapping.

Natural latex was once commer-cially produced in the Amazon in great quantities. In recent times, production of natural latex has moved to Malay-sia, Indonesia, and other Far Eastern regions. More than 90% of the total world production of natural rubber now comes from Asia, with well over half of that total originating in these countries. Other leading Asian produc-ers include Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka. China and the Philippines both have substantially increased their rub-ber production as well.

    Synthetic

Most synthetic rubber is created from two materials, styrene and bu-tadiene. Both are currently obtained from petroleum. Over a billion pounds (454,000,000 kg)of this type of rubber was manufactured in the United States in 1992. Other synthetic rubbers are made from specialty materials for chemical and temperature resistant applications.

Tires account for 60-70% of all natural and synthetic rubber used. Other products containing rubber include footwear, industrial conveyor belts, car fan belts, hoses, flooring, and cables. Products such as gloves are made directly from rubber latex. Latex paints are essentially a solution of colored pigment and rubber latex. Latex foam is made by beating air into

    the latex before coagulating it.

    Raw Materials

The composition of latex sap consists of 30-40% rubber particles, 55-65% water, and small amounts of protein, sterol glycosides, resins, ash, and sugars. Rubber has high elasticity and a polymer molecular structure. This structure consists of a long chain made up of tens of thousands of smaller units, called monomers, strung together. Each monomer unit has a molecular size comparable with that of a simple substance such as sugar. Other special chemicals are used as preservatives or stimulants during the harvesting process.

Both synthetic and natural rubber production require the use of vulcaniz-ing chemicals, primarily sulfur. Fillers such as carbon black are also added to provide extra strength and stiffness. Oil is often used to help processing and reduce cost.

    The Manufacturing

    Process

Growing and processing natural rubber is one of the most complex agri-cultural industries and requires several years. It combines botany, chemistry, and sophisticated machinery with dex-terous skills of the people who harvest the trees. Contrast this with synthetic rubber production, which involves chemical reactions and sophisticated chemical processing machinery that is automatically controlled by comput-ers. The production of natural latex is described below.

    Planting

Seeds from high-grade trees are planted and allowed to
