On Thanksgiving Day, 2013BY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+

Saint Martin’s Church

I have been with people when good news has arrived: when children were lost but were found safe, when the diagnosis came back negative and no life-threatening illness was found, when someone got the job out of all of the applicants who applied for it, when someone was found innocent ... and on and on. Following the good news was that instinct to say, “Thank God!” and we shared in a prayer that was much different than our previous prayers uttered during mo-ments of fear and concern. This tendency, this instinct follows when there is a realization that things beyond our control, things we feared, no longer need to be feared.

I know in my own life, saying “Thank God!” when I become aware that some force, some intervention in this world has worked for me; that somehow God was present and it made all of the difference. I think thanks-giving may be a particularly unique human response. We are a species capable of realizing all that could have gone wrong didn’t go wrong, and we feel compelled to do something in return for the people, situations, God, who were working on our side to see that things turned out all right. That something is all we have to offer at times; our heartfelt appreciation that is acknowledged when we have little or nothing else to offer. It is Jesus who knows He is about to be betrayed, but takes bread and wine ... and gives thanks ... and predicts what will happen to Him (Matthew 26:21ff, Mark 14:17ff, cf. 1 Corinthians 11:23ff).

Thanksgiving comes when there is that be-ginning of worship: we have little to offer to God, it’s all His anyway and He can do with it as He wills. At least, though, we can be thankful, and in our response, show gratitude for what He has shared with us. The acknowledgement before those to whom we are grateful has come spontaneously as we grow in awareness of the benefi ts we have received, the blessings and mercy given, the getting better than desired or deserved. Thanksgiving can be an antidote to envy, jealousy, arrogance; the realization that we didn’t earn or deserve or merit but it came any-way. A great Christian writer, Evelyn Underhill, says worship begins when we look around and realize we didn’t do it ourselves and can only respond with adoration and thanksgiving to the One who made it all and makes it all possible.

The next step is always doing our part to make someone else a bit more thankful -- one of God’s creatures -- and taking from our blessings to share with them. I have my favorites: those who may have “fallen through the cracks” and

whose needs are not known, or someone who is ineligible for help from institutional charities but are nevertheless in need.

Someone pointed out to me something about Church services that he observed. He said our prayers of asking for others or for ourselves are always much longer and a much more promi-nent part of worship services than our prayers of thanksgiving, or just adoring God for being God. Now comes the day when we can step back and do something a bit more balanced: setting aside time for thanksgiving and remembering before God how fortunate and blessed we really are.

I have thought often of those Pilgrims who came to America’s shores in boats that weren’t guaranteed to make it, who gave up their homes and the civilization they knew to face the hard-ships of life living off the land, surrounded by a culture unknown to them and then ... giving thanks. Can we, can I do any less, with our rela-tive abundance and relative security in compari-son to what they faced? Then, I look at what they accomplished and what all of our ances-tors did: beginning with their thankfulness and being blessed as they were blessed. It crossed my mind that our many blessings are God’s way of saying, “You’re welcome!” I’ve said that from time to time: it comes after knowing I did something for someone and they appreciated it. Maybe God feels that way too.

The Firehouse Com-munity Theatre proud-ly presents “Dashing Through the Snow,” by the playwright trio Jones, Hope, Woo-ten, and directed by Maureen Doucette. “Dashing Through the Snow” is this year’s holiday offering and is presented by special arrangement with Dra-matists Play Service, Inc., New York.

This festive comedy stars Meaghan John-son, Tina Kirby, Joel Hawkins, James Shep-hard, Breanna Brown, Janice Groves, Barb Brandenburg-McDow-ell, Cassidy Pascher, Tammy Hammer, Julie Wilkins and Timmy Smith.

The play takes place at the Snowfl ake Inn in Tinsel, Texas where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. It is four days before Christmas and a parade of eccentric guests arrive at the Snow-fl ake Inn to deck the halls with holiday hilarity. Trina, the harried yet upbeat innkeeper of the B&B, takes on more than she can handle coping with these nuttier-than-a-fruitcake lodgers. One would swear this family friendly Jones/Hope/Wooten Christmas comedy is more fun than a joyride in a one-horse open sleigh.

Show times are Dec. 13 and 14 beginning at 7 p.m., Dec. 15 beginning at 2 p.m., as well as the following weekend, Dec. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m., Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. In order to stock our lo-cal food banks this holiday season, Firehouse

Theatre will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items at each performance of “Dashing Through the Snow.” Please bring a canned good or other nonperishable item and receive free popcorn for the show!

Tickets for all of the Firehouse Theatre’s productions can be purchased at their website: www.fi rehousecommnitytheatre.com, or call the Ticket Hotline at 863-675-3066. The theatre cannot guarantee a seat if the show is sold out!

BY MARGARET ENGLANDHendry-Glades Audubon

The Great Blue Heron is the tallest North American heron. This majestic long-legged bird stands three to 4.5 feet tall with a wingspan of 5.5 to 6.6 feet. These her-ons live and breed in coastal and inland Florida.

Reports of Great Blue Herons building nests or demonstrating other con-fi rmed breeding behaviors are needed for the Breeding Bird Atlas II (BBAII) Project, which ends in 2016. During the fi rst surveys 25 years ago, there were very few breeding reports in inland Florida and only a few confi rmed nesting reports have been submitted during the current 2011/16 BBA II surveys. This species’ nesting season usually lasts from October to May.

Great Blue Herons have blue-gray back wings and belly. They have a wide, black strip over their eye and a white crown and face. In fl ight, they curl their neck in an “S” shape. Im-mature birds have a black cap and lack the black plume extending from the eye. Their back and upper wings are brownish-gray.

On the breeding grounds, adults will greet their partner with squawking “roh-roh-rohs;” other calls include clucking or screaming sounds. Chicks will call “tik-tik-tik” within min-utes of hatching.

Great Blue Herons are often seen foraging along coastal shorelines, marshes, sloughs, lakes, rivers and backyard ponds, but they will also hunt in grasslands and agricultural fi elds. These herons forage day or night by wading slowly or standing still while stalking prey. They will quickly thrust their neck and head to stab fi sh, snakes, insects, small mammals or other birds with their strong bills.

These colonial nesters are known for their courtship and pair-bonding displays, which include greetings, stick transfers and nest re-lief ceremonies. The male chooses the nest

site and then attracts a mate. He collects most of the nest material, which he presents to the female who weaves a saucer-shaped nest cup lined with pine needles, moss, reeds, leaves or small twigs. Nest-building can take from three days to two weeks. When the nest is completed, the female will lay three to four pale-blue eggs, which are incubated by both adults for 27 to 29 days. The chicks are covered in pale-gray down. The nestlings are capable of fl ight at about 60 days of age.

The community is invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for free birding trips to Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA-5), locat-ed 20 miles south of Clewiston on Nov. 30. Pho-tographers, groups and families are welcome to participate in the escorted trips. For reservations for these trips, contact Margaret England at [email protected] or call 863-674-0695 or 863-517-0202. For information about walking/bicycling access at STA-5 on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays, go to the Hendry-Glades Audu-bon website: www.hendrygladesaudubon.org.

University of Florida Health researchers and their colleagues will receive up to $7.7 million in funding over fi ve years from the National Institutes of Health to use large data sets in humans and animals to speed up the process of fi nding therapies for Alzheimer’s disease.

The grant is part of a $45 million NIH ini-tiative from the Offi ce of the NIH Director with additional funding from the National Institute on Aging, the lead institute within NIH for Alzheimer’s research.

“There is a huge unmet need with Al-zheimer’s disease,” said Todd Golde, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UF Center for Transla-tional Research in Neurodegenerative Medi-cine. “The economic costs for Alzheimer’s disease are now higher than those of heart disease and cancer, and as there are no therapies that modify the course of the dis-

ease, this is a devastating disorder for both patients who suffer from it and their fami-lies. With this grant, we hope to accelerate the discovery of possible disease-modifying therapies.”

The UF researchers are collaborating with colleagues at The Mayo Clinic Florida and the Institute for Systems Biology in Seat-tle to combine large data sets from humans and mouse models of the disease and then use the results to look at patterns that point to potential therapies.

“We are pleased that Dr. Golde’s team will be part of this national initiative,” said David S. Guzick, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president for health affairs and president of UF Health. “Dr. Golde joined us in 2010 as part of our strategic plan to build on our ex-isting strength in neuroscience and the McK-night Brain Institute and enhance our col-laborations both within the university and with other institutions. This grant speaks to

depth and breadth of the research program developed by Dr. Golde.”

During the fi rst year of the NIH grant, they plan to generate RNA sequences for every gene expressed in the human brain using 700 brain samples from 350 subjects. Then they will have data to compare with similar work done in mouse models to see where similarities and differences might be found.

The investigators will focus on how ge-netic alterations to the innate immune sys-tem the cells and mechanisms the body uses to fi ght potential microscopic invaders may be implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. Once they have identifi ed these genetic alterations based on the data they generate, they can manipulate these pathways in mouse mod-els with parallel pathologies to see how changes to the innate immune system might change the disease process. The big data ap-proach will allow the researchers to more quickly target areas of potential interest.

“If you liken this project to creating a new road map, we will have laid down half the map in the fi rst year,” Golde said. “During year two, we will be completing the map, learning to drive and fi guring out the best route to take toward therapeutic solutions. At the end of fi ve years, we hope to have advanced one to three targets for possible therapies.”

The team will be granted $1.6 million for fi scal year 2013, with the potential of $7.7 million over the course of fi ve years.

Dr. Golde is director of the Center for Transitional Research in Neurodegenerative Medicine, a professor of neuroscience in the College of Medicine and is affi liated with the Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain In-stitute of the University of Florida.

This research is supported by the Nation-al Institute on Aging grant AG 046139-01.

With the holidays approaching and plans for visiting family and friends in full swing, it’s a good time to remind everyone of the importance of using your seat belt while riding in a vehicle, including making sure children are properly secured in a car seat or booster seat. A recent seat belt survey by the Florida Department of Transportation shows that approximately ninety percent of drivers in Florida are using their seat belts.

“This time of year can be hectic and in our rush to get everything done, it can be easy to overlook some necessary safe-guards,” said Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Julie Jones. “Whether it’s a trip across town to go shopping or a trip across the state to see rela-tives, it’s important to take that extra minute before driving off to ensure that everyone in the vehicle is buckled up and secure for the journey.”

Department of Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad said, “The Florida Depart-ment of Transportation is committed to driv-ing down fatalities on our roadways, and we have seen a positive impact from seat belt usage over the years. More lives can be saved, and we will continue to educate about the importance of buckling up every trip, every time.”

Florida law requires the use of seat belts by drivers of motor vehicles and all chil-dren riding in a vehicle under the age of 18. FLHSMV and FDOT recommend:

• Buckle Up. A seatbelt is your vehicle’s most important safety feature.

• Use a car seat for children under age 3 for every trip, even if you are just going down the street.

• Make sure all car and booster seats you use are crash-tested and federally-approved.

• Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size, and always follow the manu-facturer’s directions.

• Keep children in the back seat, at least through age 12. When used with seat belts, air bags work well to protect teenagers and adults. However, air bags can be very dan-gerous to children, particularly those riding in rear-facing car seats, and to preschool and young school-aged children who are not properly restrained.

• Soon-to-be parents should buy their in-fant car seat before having the baby so you are ready to bring home the new addition to your family safely.

• Replace a car seat if the vehicle has been in a moderate to severe crash to en-sure a continued high level of protection.

job during the fi rst week in January. He plans to rent or purchase a residence

in Glades County and spend week nights near the county seat so he is closer to his constituents.

Mr. Carlisle also praised Glades County for the way they handled the interview process and stated it gave him some insight about the county and its future, “All of the candi-dates were given the same opportunity and the same questions and it was a level playing fi eld for all of us. I think the commissioners

gave me pointed and direct questions and let me know what their concerns were.”

He said he looks forward to discussing with commissioners their thoughts and the direction they’d like the county to take.

With over 20 years of experience with Florida law, commissioners said they had no question Mr. Carlisle can jump in and get the ball rolling.

Commissioner Tim Stanley said he liked that Mr. Carlisle had some economic devel-opment experience which should help with several projects like the county business park and the America’s Gateway Intermodel Logistics Center project.

Mr. Carlisle concurred that Glades County

is on the cusp of some big changes, “Glades County has a ton of potential. I’d like to try to utilize Lake Okeechobee as an attraction point.”

Mr. Carlisle worked to bring in a new re-cycling center in Rock Hill. While in Lake Park, he worked with many new businesses and was involved with the Scripps Research project.

“We will be able to bring businesses here. I want to get the input from the county commission on the business they feel is im-portant, and we’ll work together to attract those and I will make myself available to help these businesses,” he added.

The rural nature of Glades County is a

benefi t, he added, and despite challenges, Glades County can compete with other ar-eas of Florida.

“We are off the beaten path, but what drives business is traffi c and visitors. It’s a challenge no doubt,” he added.

Mr. Carlisle promised an open-door policy for all employees and stressed he knows sev-eral employees already, including Road Su-perintendent Avant Brown, and has a work-ing relationship with him. He also promised citizens he will be honest with them and try his best to help them.

“I will tell them the truth and I won’t make something up. Citizens should know I’m very approachable,” he added.

be held Friday, Dec. 13, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Doyle-Conner Building on U.S. 27 in Moore Haven.

There will be toys and/or gifts for children up to the age of 13. In order to receive a gift, a valid ID will be required, offered Capt. Lewis.

So far, said the captain, he has spent about $7,500 on toys. The rest he said will be spent on buying fi shing equipment from Bass Pro Shops and items such as baseballs, basketballs, footballs and such.

Even though he’s had a lot of fun shop-ping for the toys, he said the real fun will come Dec. 13.

“It’s more fun giving the toys away,” said Capt. Lewis.

According to the GCSO captain, he and Mr. Hersey have been a toy-giving duo for several years — starting when he worked at the Okeechobee County Sheriff ’s Offi ce and Mr. Hersey had a ranch in Okeechobee County.

Capt. Lewis said Mr. Hersey has since moved to Glades County, and since 2006 has helped to raise money to ensure children in Glades County will have a merry Christmas.

“Harry and I have raised about $10,000 a year every year since we started,” said Capt. Lewis.

He went on to add that “friends from all over have helped by donating.”

For information on the toy giveaway, con-tact Capt. Lewis at the Glades County Sher-iff ’s Offi ce 863-946-1600, ext. 2105.
