Editorial

Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA) is not ‘Kochi Master Printers Association’. KMPA has active members in different parts of Kerala

– districts like Kasaragod, Wyanad or Idukki are some exception. Otherwise, KMPA represents printers from across Kerala. Recently, I had visited Calicut where I met some active members of KMPA as well as the Offset Printers Association of Calicut (OPAC). I felt that most of them look up to KMPA to solve some of the problems they face in their business.

The most pressing problem is price-undercutting. As OPAC President V.M. Vijayan, Managing Partner of Geethanjali Offset Prints, put it: “We had been doing well till a couple of years back. Some people with hefty cash came to Calicut and bought plots and set up printing units, brought in new machineries. Unfortunately, these people have no background in printing and you can guess what would happen…”

I assumed the scenario before Vijayan explained it. The new press entrepreneurs do not even know to do the costing of printing jobs. They will accept printing jobs for whatever price the clients or agents offered, but they just want work. Result: the whole industry, including the established printers who had been doing a legitimate business with moderate profits, are compelled to cut rates. Most of the traditional printers won’t go below the minimum, even if forced to do so, but the customers get the work done from the job-hungry new units.

This is not just Calicut’s problem… its everywhere. The only solution to this issue is to create awareness among the print entrepreneurs. Either they will gradually realize the follies on their own, or they will perish.

So, my dear print fraternity friends, please don’t indulge in practices that will ruin your own existence. Do not degrade yourself by succumbing to the demands of unscrupulous elements. Do your business keeping your head straight.

President’s Desk

Dear friends,

Onam came again and KMPA family celebrated the festival with joy! We couldn’t wait for Thiruvonam, but gathered at PJ Princess Regency, a resort in picturesque Vypeen Island with its mesmerizing backwaters. With our families and friends on 23rd August we

enjoyed and… what a celebration! Fun, frolic, music, dance and of course some serious business – all the different tastes were there, not to mention the hearty Onasadhya. And, of course… thanks to ProvinTechnos Pvt. Ltd. for supporting KMPA’s Onam event.

KMPA was lucky to have Prof. K.V. Thomas, M.P., as the chief guest despite his busy schedules on the particular day. He delivered a wonderful Onam message during his speech and honoured T.M. Rajan of Process Color and SIPA President AMSG Ashokan with ponnada. The M.P. wished all the best to KMPA and its members.

For the sixth time consecutively, KMPA boosted the spirits of the printing technology students in Kerala during the Onam function – 12 top students from various VHSE and other institutions received cash awards from generous KMPA members. Cash awards This humble gesture by KMPA is to encourage excellence in print education. (The names of the establishments contributed to the cash awards are given on Page Number Page 5)

KMPA held its 37thAnnual General Body Meeting on 13th August 2015, at IMA House, Kaloor, Ernakulam. The AGM was a brief one, but the association members discussed some important issues. Treasurer B.K. Rajan deserves a pat on his shoulders for managing the finances of KMPA.

KMPA stalwart O. Venugopal, Managing Director of Anaswara Offset Pvt. Ltd. and former President of the association, deserves more responsible positions in the national level. His compatriots want him to be the Vice-President (South) for AIFMP. He is a man who cannot say no when people around him look up to him and request for his leadership. That’s why he has filed his papers for the post of AIFMP Vice-President. So, Mr. Venugopal, we look forward to you becoming the leaderof the industry in South India and you will not stop, go a long way ahead to reach the top position of the AIFMP in future.

A bull run is visible in the Printing Industry in Kerala and it looks to remain bullish for a couple of years. Investments are pouring in to the industry despite the smaller size of Kerala market comparing to other printing hubs. Whatsoever, more and more ambitious entrepreneurs will throw in money as long as they get return. So make hay while the sun is shining.

My best wishes to all print industry investors. May you all do well and flourish!

G. Venugopal(President, KMPA)

sterling shines in new glorysterling Print House Pvt. ltd., edappally has made yet another remarkable achievement. the leading print firm in Kochi inaugurated its brand new Ryobi 920 sheet-fed offset machine on september 10, 2015 at a grand function held at the press premises.

The compound of Sterling Print House turned colorful as employees and managers came in

the uniform colour-code – men in kasavu mundu and light yellow-stripped kurtha; ladies in similar shade saris. Everyone seemed cheerful as the inaugural function of the Ryobi 920 set to begin. All the guests moved towards the machine floor where the shining Ryobi was kept.

Kochi Corporation Councillor M.P. Maheshkumar and Sterling directors lit the lamp and the Councillor cut the ribbon and declared the inauguration of the machine in the presence of Sterling’s top managers and employees of the press. Officials of Provin Technos – N. Pradeep and Abhijit Kolhatkar – came for the inauguration. A number of members from Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA) were also present

at the function. The new Ryobi was switched on at the ‘Muhurtham’ and the machine started printing the images of Goddess Saraswathi and Lord Ganapathy.

G. Venugopal, Executive Director of Sterling Print House, welcomed the gathering. “Since the establishment founded in 1987 by my father Govindankutty, the Managing Director of the firm, Sterling has completed 30 years. After I came to this firm about 15 years back, we have expanded the press time to time by acquiring new machineries. Now, with the new Ryobi 920, Sterling has added more capacity. This firm owes its employees for its growth. They are the people who have invested their valuable life and career with us. I will always remain indebted to them,” Venugopal said in his Welcome Speech. He said Councillor Maheshkumar is a well-wisher of Sterling and in the past he had inaugurated 3 other machines installed at Sterling. “All those machines are working well because, I believe, Mahesh’s touch is very ‘lucky’ for Sterling,” Venugopal said.

Councillor Maheshkumar said in his Inaugural Speech that “The reason for Sterling’s growth is not my ‘lucky charm’ but it’s Venugopal’s ‘Midas

Touch’. He appreciated Sterling management for giving employment to around 100 people and wished the print firm reach greater glory. “This firm takes care of its employees well and they reciprocate with their hard work and loyalty,” the Councillor said.

Managing Director Govindankutty spoke about the old times when he established the press, the hurdles he faced and how he brought his son

Venugopal who was living in Mumbai to run the press 15 years back. “My son did proud to me. Initially, he was hesitant to leave Mumbai and come to Kochi, but after he came and took over as Executive Director of the press, he proved his mettle.”

Two employees who completed more than 25 years of service at Sterling were honoured at the function. Managing Director Govindankutty presented

ponnadas, mementoes and a gold coin to Balakrishan, a CtP department staffer and K. Rajeevan, another employee. Mementoes were also presented to many others who had effectively contributed through the path.

Provin Technos’ Pradeep expressed his deep pleasure to Sterling for choosing Ryobi. Finally, the function was over with the Vote of Thanks by P.P. Rajeev, Manager of Sterling.

Insightful press entrepreneurs invest in machines that will fetch good returns without much delay. Insight

Print Communications Pvt. Ltd. is supporting this attitude of press owners in Kerala. In the last few months Insight has boosted the industry in the God’s Own Country by installing some the most powerful machines at some top printing presses here.

K.P. Sabu, Managing Director of Five Star Offset Printers, Nettoor near Ernakulam, invested ` 2 crores for a Komori Enthrone 4 colour offset printing machine supplied by Insight, the sole Komori Japan dealer in India, just a month ago. “I wanted a demi-size machine to do short-run jobs because

investments with insightinsight Communications Pvt. ltd. has taken Kerala Print industry by a storm with selling more than 30 world-class machines in 5 years to various presses in the state. Print Miracle took a tour at some of the print firms where Insight has made installations in the last few months.

we had plenty of such works coming in,” says Sabu. “I opted Komori to suit the size of the smaller dimension paper of demmy size. This machine is the perfect one for short-run jobs, I heard from the industry circle and friends in the field. The fact that Komori has sold the maximum number of machines in Kerala in the recent past itself proves its popularity.”

Insight’s Regional Manager – Kerala, Abhilash K. Babu, based in Kochi, says the reason for the popularity of Komori is its reliability and the service Insight provides. “It’s a workhorse that tirelessly produces quality prints. With Japanese excellence in performance, Insight provides best after-sales services

to the clients. With installation of our machines, our service engineers stay with operators as long as they need assistance. Usually, in two weeks’ time they learn Komori operations. Then, we give them space to learn further on their own. Then they come up with more doubts and questions. Our engineers reach the spot again after a couple of months to clear the doubts. Thus the operators tame the machine and become experts in handling it,” Abhilash says.

There are other Kochi-based buyers who are extremely satisfied with Komori performance. Viani Printings in Kochi had installed a Komori Lithron S 26 4-colour offset machine and a Kodak Trendsetter thermal CtP machine supplied by Insight just 6 months ago. Very recently two prominent firms in Ernakulam – Maptho Printings, Kalamassery and Alif Packs Pallikkara – installed Kodak Trendsetter CtP bought from Insight.

“I opted for Kodak Trendsetter mainly because of the excellent workflow software the machine has,” says Jotty George Managing Partner of Maptho Printings. “I was also pragmatic about the good service provided by the supplier Insight Communications. Till last month I was outsourcing for my CtP works, but now invested ` 60 lakhs for the CtP machine with confidence and I am waiting to see the results yet. But, I am sure this machine and its supplier are

trustworthy,” Jotty says with optimism. And adds: “In the last two weeks after the installation, I am observing the performance of the machine. I must admit this machine is fast and the work at the press has become much easier and speedier than before.”

The plates of the Kodak CtP – Capricorn GT (for short-runs) and Achieve EM (for long runs) – are also Kodak products and Insight gives an extra two years warranty to those who use the Kodak recommended plates. “Any other plates can be used in this machine, but as a quid-pro-quo deal, Insight gives an extended two years’ warranty to the Trendsetter for the Kodak plate users,” said Abhilash.

Alif Packs, a company which does packaging and commercial printing, has been looking out for a CtP machine and finally zeroed in on the Kodak Trendsetter.

“We needed a CtP that functions perfectly and fast as we do packaging printing as well as commercial. Alif Packs has clients in the Gulf, USA and UK. These clients from abroad have come to us for quality works and speedy delivery. After much machine hunt, I decided to buy the Kodak Trendsetter CtP and I don’t regret my decision after three months watching the performance of the machine,” said Nizar Ibrahim, MD of Alif Packs.

The machine was installed by Insight three months ago and now running well, said Alif Packs Manager Nidhin Varghese. “Alif Packs is a big firm with over 100 employees. We have two shifts working here and still we were unable comfortably deliver to our clients. But after the Kodak Trendsetter came, things have changed drastically. Now everything goes smooth as we don’t have to depend outside DtP providers,” Nidhin said.

These are a few patrons of Insight Communications. In Kerala, Insight has gained an envious position over its competitors. “More and more press owners in Kerala have ordered machines from us. In the next one year Insight expects to make another ten installations of different press machines,” said George Mathew, Insight Communications Director based in Chennai.

“I had been in Kerala quiet often in

the last few years meeting press owners interested in knowing the benefits of buying machines from us. I tell them that Insight has come to Kerala with a long-term plan. We are here to serve the industry by providing printers who seek the best. Our service and business deals have earned us a tremendous goodwill

in Kerala. We will live up to their expectations in future too,” George said.

So Insight is to stay here forever. In the coming months Kerala Printing Industry will witness more installations by Insight. Print Miracle will be updating the readers on Insight’s operations in Kerala.

Perfect solutions for press maintenance

As part of KMPA’s regular technical seminars, the association brought in 3N

Vision, a company that provides various chemical concoctions for maintaining press machinery and prevents rusting and corrosion. The seminar held at KMPA Hall on June 5, 2015 was well attended by the fraternity.

After the Welcome Address by President G. Venugopal, KMPA Technology Committee Chairman Magesh Karthik on who’s initiative the seminar was conducted, introduced 3N Vision and its CEO of Kuruvila Abraham. Magesh introduced Kuruvila as a veteran in maintenance field and a former TechNova employee. He resigned as the Chief Operating Officer at TechNova India’s Chemicals Division to pursue his business dream of an own venture and launched 3N Vision, Indian representative of XCP, a Scotland-based manufacturer of chemical solutions for corrosion and maintenance.

“XCP products give ‘cradle to grave’ protection to the press machineries,” Kuruvila said as an introduction. “3N Vision directly imports the ingredients

of a blanket or plate), application of XCP Press Guard is recommended. XCP Bearer Ring Oil is a specialty lubricant that ensures supreme lubrication for smooth running of bearer contact points without friction wear and corrosion. The XCP ONE is a high performance multipurpose spray designed to penetrate as well as clean and protect against corrosion. The product is ideal for cleaning the plate clamping devices of web presses. XCP ONE delivers maximum performance across a wide range of applications and can be used on nuts, bolts, screws, valves, chains, bearings, levers, locks, hinges, cables and many more.

XCP Lubricate & Protect is dedicated to the art of lubrication. This high performance spray delivers long lasting protection against friction, wear and corrosion.

XCP Rust Blocker is a powerful rust prevention spray. It creates a long lasting protective barrier to protect any steel, metal or alloy surfaces against the effects if rust and corrosion. Use it on exposed aluminium and ferrous surfaces, suspension units, box sections, chrome, chains, motors, shafts as well as tools and equipment.

“These days a multi-colour offset machine costs crores. Without proper maintenance you stand to lose even the resale value of the press, leave alone its quality performance. Corrosion is a grave problem at press. I met a lot of press owners recently and they all agreed they do not have the right solution to prevent corrosion,” Kuruvila elaborated with support of Power-point presentation, showing how corrosion and rusting happens at various stages.

Corrosion occurs primarily because of water. Also, some chemicals used in the printing press contribute to this problem. “The most important asset in a press is the costly machines. Unless we carefully maintain it, expensive part of the machine like the cylinder gets rusted without proper cleaning solutions. Replacing a cylinder costs a high amount. These days, none of the machine manufacturers give warranty for damages caused by corrosion, unless you use all the consumables recommended by them. Here is the significance of using the solutions from 3N Vision,” concluded Abraham.

in bulk and converts it to make anti-corrosion solutions suitable for Indian climatic conditions. As 3N Vision imports the ingredients in bulk from Scotland, the import duties are less. So, we have the price advantage and we are able to sell our products at affordable rate. Otherwise, XCP’s products are highly priced.”

3N Vision launched wide range of anti-corrosion products at Print Expo this year. Kuruvila has NuLith Graphics Pvt. Ltd. based in Mumbai as a partner. The company also sells anti-corrosion solutions to automotive, aviation and other manufacturing units. Basically, all industries need solutions to prevent rusting. Costly press machineries have to be maintained well for good results and to preserve them without rust. “Even if a press owner wishes to sell his expensive machinery for a good price he has to keep that in perfect condition. Then only he will get a decent price for it,” Abraham said.

XCP Press Guard is a simple to use high performance printing cylinder protection. Every time the cylinder surface is cleaned (during replacement

Price war causes turmoil in calicut’s Printing industry

Print Miracle team recently visited some press units in Calicut. Most of the print entrepreneurs we met said the industry was facing troubled times as reckless new comers with chunks of money were creating havoc in the industry by price-undercutting. the last two years have brought chaos into the industry by the neo-rich entrepreneurs, who do not have the slightest idea what printing is. Also, the new players have made a practice of ‘fishing’ experienced employees from established presses offering a little more salary.

Printers in Calicut city were a happy lot till recently. They had been getting sufficient work including

newspapers, periodicals, commercial and digital printing jobs. The industry was thriving… Then things started to change. Some cash-rich people from neighboring areas cast eye on printing industry, thinking it was a goldmine. They had no knowledge about printing business, but started pumping money into the field. They bought huge plots and built premises for printing presses and acquired brand new machines, without thinking whether it was worth investing in a business, according V.M. Vijayan, Managing Partner of Geethanjali Offset Prints, ‘a total loss business.’ “A ‘total loss business’ means,” Vijayan explains: “if a client rejects the work done by a press due to the fault of the printer, the whole product is a waste. The printer can only sell the printed material as waste paper.”

So, according to Vijayan, “to cover unexpected losses from such ‘disasters’, a printer must get a profit margin of at least 25%. Most of these newcomers don’t understand this and they undertake jobs for puny profit margins in order to get more work. They do not know they are not only digging their own grave, but also dragging established printers who play safe into the grave.”

Most of the printers Print Miracle met at Calicut agreed to this. Says C.R. Nandkumar, Promoter of Grace Image Group of Companies based in Calicut and having branches in Mangalore, Kannur and Thrissur: “The fact is that these unwise entrepreneurs do good business for some time, but without knowing the soil beneath their feet is slowly being eroded.”

Nandakumar, KMPA Vice-President (North), also said competition in printing business in Calicut has become cut-throat and some existing printers are closing or diversifying into packaging, digital or just functioning as CtP service providers. “I abandoned printing two years ago. Now I am providing CtP service and doing pre-press jobs for my fellow printers. I am much relieved now as I don’t have to crack my head by dealing with direct customers.”

Nandakumar, with some fellow printers, has also launched a ‘printing cluster’ in Kannur. He said the cluster will have all the facilities – from a full-fledged pre-press, press and post-press – to handle any kind of printing works. It will also have a printing technology training centre. The project has completed construction and now tender is given. The clustrer also will have training center to train students in Printing Technology.

Unlike in many cities of India, the printing industry in Calicut was pioneered by prominent

natives of Malabar – not by Colonial or Christian religious institutions. The first printing press in Calicut was opened in 1862. The press was called ‘VidyaVilasam Press’.

Later on, small treadle presses were established in Calicut to cater to the business needs of the city. By the 1960s, Calicut saw a spurt of such letter presses. Some of the prominent presses of those times were Kelappan Achukoodam, Spectator Press, Cylone Press, Mascot Press, Xavier Press, Janabharathi Press, Bharathi Press and Minerva Press.

One of the earliest presses in Calicut was Mithavathi Press. It was established in 1915 by C. Krishnan, a social reformer and freedom fighter, to print a newspaper called ‘Mithavathi’. The press was renamed later as ‘The Empire Press’. It used to publish various weeklies, magazines and pamphlets that influence socio-political thoughts of people in Malabar.

Mathrubhoomi daily was started printing in 1923; Deshabhimani in 1942. By the time of Independence, Calicut had become the main hub of periodicals and newspapers in Kerala. Now most of the Malayalam dailies have editions from Calicut and there are umpteen numbers of periodicals and other publications printed at various presses in Calicut.

The first commercial offset printing press in Calicut – Empire Offset Printers – was founded in 1975 by this author. By the beginning of the 80s, other offset commercial presses mushroomed in the city. Now there are more than a dozen colour offset printers and more than forty small printers in the city. The Calicut district has more than 400 printers situated in other towns and urban areas of Calicut such as Vatakara, Koyilandi, Ramanatukara, Thamrassery and Kunnamangalam.

a brief history of Printing in calicutBy K. Devarajan

KMPa-oPac Joint Meeting

The issues Calicut printers were facing came into discussion during a joint meeting of Kerala

Master Printers Association (KMPA) and Offset Printers Association of Calicut (OPAC) held Span Hotel, after KMPA’s Managing Committee Meeting on July 25, 2015.

The leaders OPAC – V.M. Vijayan of Geethanjali, Murali of Blaze Prints and others – spoke elaborately on the problems of Calicut print industry and sought the support to solve these problems.

One of the complaints OPAC had was about the lesser printing charges in other printing hubs in Kerala. Because the printing rates in the nearby printing hubs are lesser, a lot of jobs go out of Calicut and many presses in the city are compelled to cut rates.

KMPA leaders said that the association will do whatever it can to solve the rate under-cutting menace and bring a common minimum rate for printing jobs.

During the combined meeting, KMPA honoured three print industry veterans in Calicut. K. Devarajan, the poineer who started Empire Offset Printers, the first offset printing press in Calicut, V.M. Vijayan, Managing Partner of Geethanjali Offset Prints and Murali of Blaze Offset Prints. The senior press owners of Calicut were honoured with ponnadas.

KMPA office-bearers introduced the association to the printers of Calicut during their speeches and stressed the importance of working together for the betterment of the industry.

KMPA President G. Venugopal, Past President O. Venugopal and IPP Joseph Muttathottil spoke in the meeting. OPAC office-bearers V.M. Vijayan and Murali also addressed the gathering. At the end of the meeting KMPA General Secretary delivered the Vote of Thanks and the meeting was adjourned.

The participants later enjoyed a sumptuous dinner and said good-bye to each other.

The 3rd Managing Committee meeting of Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA) for the

term 2014-16 was held at Calicut for a specific reason – reaching out to the printers in one of the important printing hub in Kerala. KMPA had planned to meet leaders and office-bearers of Kerala Printers Association (KPA) and Offset Printers Association of Calicut (OPAC) after the Managing Meeting. KMPA strength in the Malabar area needed a boost and it was decided by the Managing Committee that the meetings should be conducted at Malabar Capital Calicut.

At 8 am on July 25, 2015, 18 KMPA office-bearers from Ernakulam boarded a mini bus on their 5-hour journey to Calicut, stopping for lunch at Land & Building Committee Chairman Nasir’s home near Calicut. After the long road travel everybody had a hearty meal. Resting for a while, the team reached at Span Hotel before 5pm.

KMPA’s Vice President (North) C.R. Nandakumar of Cryons Colour Digital Prints made all arrangements for the meeting at Hotel Span, Calicut. The meeting began soon with a silent prayer and later paying condolences on

Managing committee Meets at calicutthe death of mother of Joint Secretary Yeldho K. George, who passed away on April 12, 2015.

Host Nandakumar delivered the Welcome Speech and said he was extremely happy to see his colleagues at his own city and welcomed each member to the meeting. While delivering the Presidential Address, G. Venugopal expressed his happiness of conducting the meeting in Calicut. S. Saji from Sujilee came for the meeting all the way from Kollam, the President specially mentioned during the speech.

The Minutes of the Second Managing Committee was presented by General Secretary Manmohan Shenoy and was approved by the Committee Members after Shaji Manjooranproposing it and Benito Joseseconding it.

The quarterly audited accounts of KMPA was presented by Treasurer B.K. Rajan. He said the association’s monetary status was comfortable despite the increase in activities. The meeting approved the accounts after IPP Joseph Muttathottil proposingit and Haridas seconding it.

One important issue discussed during the accounts presentation was the final settlement of the deal with Intimate

Machines, who had given Rs. 3 lakhs as loan to KMPA during the purchase of the association office in 2008, which KMPA had agreed to repay after the Print Miracle Expo. Exhibition Chairman O. Venugopal explained how the accounts can be settled and the meeting agreed to follow up the matter.

During the interaction with office-bearers, the President said that a new MoU has to be signed for the conduct of the Printing Technology course under ASAP, which would be done soon. KMPA Vice-President S. Saji requested KMPA help to conduct a printing technology course at a charitable institution at Kollam. He said KMPA will have no expense to conduct the course but has to only provide the teaching staff for which the institution will pay the salary. The President said the association will consider the request at suitable time.

Exhibition Committee Chairman O. Venugopal said KMPA has decided to continue with the Print Miracle Expo in the future too. He said “now we have the experience after conducting it in 2014 and we can organize it at least in 2 or 3 years. Next year there will be Drupa and other expos, so the next KMPA expo shall be held in 2017.” He said according to the agreement with Showcase the first three editions of the expo must be conducted only with Showcase as the co-organizer. In a way it’s good as we can gain more experience in conducting the expo. Later on KMPA alone can easily organize Print Miracle Expo.

The ‘Print & Beyond’ seminar held on the sidelines of Print Miracle Expo last December shall be conducted every year. This year the Print & Beyond seminar shall be conducted in September or October, Venugopal said. He also said the KMPA Print Awards 2014 was a big hit and all participants have appreciated it well. This award shall be held every two years as the printing fraternity in Kerala has well received the event. “We

can conduct it with more elaborately and successful as we now have gained much experience,” Venugopal said. The meeting unanimously agreed to O. Venugopal’s suggestions to conduct the exhibition, Print Awards and international seminar.

KMPA has received three applications for membership, the Membership Committee Chairman Raju N. Kutty informed the meeting. Avodah Printers, Ernakulam North, Orbit Printers, Ernakulam and a paper dealer Shivshakthi Papers, Ernakulam. The meeting gave it consent to proceed with the three parties’ admission into KMPA.

To C.R. Nandakumar’s enquiry whether KMPA could reduce the admission fee from `10,000, the committee said the amount was mentioned in the by-laws of the association and it won’t be possible to reduce the fee. The prospective members shall be made aware of the value of KMPA membership, the committee opined.

President Venugopal announced that the former KMPA President O. Venugopal has been nominated for the post of AIFMP’s Vice-President (South). The Federation elections are coming

soon, we hope our nominee may win the post. The President also said that KMPA has extended its support to South India Printers Association (SIPA) and KMPA has invited the office-bearers of SIPA for the Onam function, along with the next Managing Committee Meeting. The meeting approved the move to be a part of SIPA.

O. Venugopal added that SIPA office-bearers, including AMSG Ashokan, will be having a meeting at Trivandrum with the printers there on their way coming to Kochi. The purpose of this meeting is to introduce SIPA to all printers there. KMPA Vice-President Madhusoodhanan has been requested to organize the meeting tentatively on August 22. There will be also similar meeting at Kollam, which will be organized by S. Saji, KMPA Vice-President (East). Ashokan has been organizing such meetings in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu, Venugopal said. The school textbook controversy in Kerala is far from over. Kerala Books and Publications Society (KBPS) was unable to deliver the goods on time as

the schools opened in March. Education Department had alleged that it was the laxity of the Government Presses which upset the printing of textbooks. Then there was a move to get the textbooks printed at a press outside the state.

Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA) intervened in the matter and took initiatives to convince the Government that there are competent private printing presses in Kerala to undertake large volume printing like textbook work. On July 18, KMPA office-bearers held a press conference at Ernakulam Press Club to inform the media about the association’s stand on the textbook printing. O. Venugopal, former KMPA President, told the media that despite printing presses in Kerala was well-equipped to do the textbook work, the move to give the work to private presses outside the state was deplorable.

“There are around 10,000 small, medium and large printing presses in Kerala private sector, which provide employment to more than 1 lakh people. These presses give the exchequer crores of rupees in taxes,” Venugopal said during the press meet. “In the last few years millions of rupees have been invested in the printing industry by private entrepreneurs. Government cannot ignore the contribution by the printing industry to the economy of the State.”

Following a decision to reduce the weight of textbooks, it was decided to bring out the textbooks in two volumes and this has further burdened the printers. The first volume of books was distributed before Onam, after around 4 months the academic year started.

Printing of textbooks for the next academic year is scheduled to commence in October. At least next year the Government must take decision on time to entrust private printing presses for the printing of textbooks, Venugopal opined.

The syllabus for SSLC is set to be revised next year. Any delay in printing the books would upset the SSLC examinations next year too.

An offset printing machine consists of hundreds of mechanical, electrical,

electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic components. All these parts have to be assembled together with high precision for the machine to run smoothly. Before getting into the assembling part, let us see some of the main mechanical parts.Mechanical Parts

Side frames(Always used as pair); Cylinders Plate, Blanket and Impression; Shafts(For mounting levers, cams sprocket, gears etc.); Levers (These are having bearings fitted on one end, which is moving over acam to obtain desired motion. These are fitted as loose or pinned on shaft); Fasteners like bolts(Hexagonal, socket head, cheese head, round head etc.) Nuts, washers,

Manufacturing of offsetPrinting Machines the Offset Printing Machine is very complex in construction and contains thousands of parts assembled together. A. UnniKRisHnAn, who has worked as a Production engineer at HMt and Heidelberg Germany for more than 3 decades, writes about the offset machine parts and how intricate the assembling and installation. this is the first part of the article. the second part will be published in the next edition of Print Miracle.

pins (taper, straight, hollow) etc; Chains with different pitch and width used in feeder, delivery etc; Sprockets; Grippers and gripper pads; Gears; Pulleys; and Cams.

chain: Chain is a series of connected links which are typically made up of metal. Chains are used to transmit power from one shaft to another. In delivery unit gripper bars are mounted on pair of chains to transport paper.

sprocket: It is a profiled wheel with

camsCams are irregular shaped disc which

is fixed on the shaft to transmit non-uniform motion as required to the lever resting on it.

Various types are: Surface/disc cam (the outer surface is non uniform having ups and downs. The cam follower fixed on the lever is resting on it.); Face cam (the cam shape is on the face of it and cam follower is inside the grooved cam); Spiral cam (the cam follower is on the groove in spiral shape).compressors

Offset printing machines require air blow and suction (vacuum) for paper feeding, transferring and at delivery.Pneumatic air is having high pressure above 6 bar to operate pneumatic cylinders for impression On/off, rollers on/off etc.

Air for feeder and delivery is supplied by rotary compressor having vanes rotating at higher r.p.m. This air is only having pressure around 0.6 bar where as pneumatic compressors deliver air around 9 bar.

The two types of compressors are Reciprocating and Rotary. In reciprocating type as the name implies the piston is moving to and fro. At the dead end compressed air (air blow) is produced and taken out. Small size offsets like Heidelberg GTO machines and platen machine is having this type of compressor as built-in as an integral part of machine. This unit generate air and vacuum for feeding paper.

Pneumatic compressors are mainly two types having Single Head and Double Headin V shape. There will be a collecting chamber to store the compressed air. There are 2 different types of Pneumatic compressors asDry type and Oil type.

In oil type lubrication oil from the

teeth, cogs, or even sprockets with that mesh with a chain. Sprockets are used to transmit rotary motion between two shafts. Sprockets are used to engage the chain which transmits power.

Pulleys: This is used to transmit drive from one to another. There are different types according to the shape of belts on it such as flat, grooved, teethed etc. The diameter, width and no. of grooves in a pulley depend on the load it has to transmit.

Gears:A gear cut with utmost precision is necessary for correct registration.

Different types of gears such asSpur gear (teeth are straight and parallel to axis); Helical gear(teeth are inclined and is used to drive cylinders and can transmit more stabilised power compared to spur gear); Worm gear (used in combination with worm wheel; Bevel gear (this is in conical shape and used as pair for transmission in 90 degrees and Spiral gears (teeth are in spiral form).

electronic Parts: PCBS; EPROMS and Sensors etc.

Pneumaic Parts: Cylinders and Valves.

hydraulic Parts: Oil and grease Pumping System, Pressure intensifier for Perfecting.

Manufacturing DepartmentThe main departments in a

manufacturing plant are: Design and R&D, Foundry, Machining, Assembly, Final Inspection, Painting, Despatch and After Sales (Installation, servicing, Spare parts supply and Maintenance) Design: This is the brain part of a manufacturing plant. It consists of Design Engineers, draughtsmen, planning engineers etc. They make use of CAD (Computer aided Design) and

and kept for future reference. The bush or needle bearing selection to each bore is a herculean task which requires great experience. Though there is measurement value, the bush and bearing selection is done manually to confirm correct fit and proper movement but no backlash.

CNC machines work in robotic action. All the required tools are arranged on a round tool carrier and each tool will come out and do its operation and with draws. Like that all operations like boring, drilling, tapping etc are carried out

cylindersAfter seasoning, the cylinders

undergo turning, milling, drilling, tapping etc operations. Now the cylinders go for cylindrical grinding operation.

Diameter of cylinders is very close tolerated especially for multi colour machines. If not maintained, print length variation and misregister will occur.

Cylinders also undergo balancing operation (Static and dynamic) to obtain true balanced rotation.

Plate and blanket cylinders are having the two end bearers as separate and they are normally hardened.

The cylinders are checked for concentricity. This is to obtain even impression all over the area. This is checked with a dial gauge kept on cylinder body and cylinder is rotated. The dial shows the reading, which should be 0-0 or maximum 0.02 mm variation throughout the circumference.

For each component a manufacturing warrant is made and it denotes all the operation on it in serial order. A job card is issued to each operator specifying the standard time to finish that job. As per the time taken, incentive bonus is paid. After each operation, it is subjected to stage inspection and after passing, it goes for next operation until all the operations are finished and passed by inspection department. Then it goes to stores where it is kept in bins arranged in racks properly numbered.

The PPC department, as per the assembly warrant, parts are issued for each group assembly and is given to Assembly Department.

(Assembly and installation Procedure in next issue)

oil tank is circulating and special filters are provided to remove oil particles from the blow air. Here special steel blades are used which is rotating at high speed. From top side blow air and from down side suction or vacuum is produced.

In dry type, instead of steel blades there are blades made of graphite or carbon are used which is self lubricating and no supply of oil is required. Here the temperature of unit is slightly higher. Gear Pump

This is a simple pump used for pumping oil to the required points for lubrication purposes.Bearings

Bearings are supporting element for shafts, cylinders etc they need intermittent oil lubrication at desired quantity. There are different types of

bearings such as Bush bearing (normally made of steel, bronze, phosphor bronze etc. Some are self lubricating and others needs oil lubrication); Ball bearing (highly tolerated and dimensioned steel balls are arranged in circular way in between two cages. The inner and outer diameter and width can vary);Roller bearing (instead of balls there will be steel rollers and can take heavy load);Needle bearings (small diameter pins are arranged inside the cage.

electrical Parts: The main electrical parts of an offset machine are: Motors (AC and DC, miniature, servo type etc.). Magnets (when the coil gets electric supply, it gets energised and gets magnetic property to actuate its connected part, used in clutches to engage and disengage, actuationof lever to obtain impression on/off etc.Contactors and Relays; Switches and Transformers (Step up and step down transformers are used to vary the voltage as per the requirement.).

Auto CAD. Drawing for each component

in detail, assembly drawing, group assembly and final machine structure is made here.

Planning department consists of PPM-production planning materials, PPT -prod.plan.tools, PPC Prod. planning control, PPO-prod. Plan operations etc.

Foundry:This consists of Pattern shop, moulding and casting units Machining

In this department the machining operations like plaining (levelling), milling, turning, boring, drilling, tapping etc are carried out for producing actual components.

The bores are measured using internal micrometer known as TESSA having 3 legs. According to this measured value, the bushes are made and selected. Very close tolerance is maintained. The measured value of bores in side frames and outside diameter of bushes are recorded with frame number

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is associated with the printing industry like

no other company in the sector. For generations, the company has shaped the industry to make a success of printed communication in all its different forms.

To maintain its position as the most reliable partner in the printing industry, Heidelberg has undergone extensive strategic development and systematically adapted its portfolio to today’s and tomorrow’s customer needs and requirements.

The company is underlining this reorientation with the launch of a new brand identity.

This development at Heidelberg will help customers remain successful in a changing market environment – to ensure lasting profitability, customers need a comprehensive and tailored package of services geared toward effective and reliable production processes, the right equipment for cost-effective investment, and exceptionally easy access to all tried and tested consumables.

The new brand identity reinforces the customer benefits that Heidelberg is offering through its all-inclusive portfolio of digital and offset printing, workflows, consumables, and services. The focus is no longer simply on equipment, but on the integrated overall process and all the requisite components.

new brand identity The Heidelberg portfolio is based on

three pillars – Services, Equipment, and Consumables. Each of these three areas of customer contact is being given its own color-coded identity – yellow for services, blue for equipment, and green for consumables.

These colors are also used in the initial letter of the redesigned company logo. The new colors maintain a connection with the traditional Heidelberg blue, a symbol of the company’s competence, its unique global network, and all its staff. The first letter of Heidelberg will also be used as a brand icon alongside the new logo.

new brand identity for heidelberg

Thematic icons As another new design element, Heidelberg will be using thematic icons to highlight the specific benefits for customers. As a result, communication will no longer focus on technical features and functions. Instead, Heidelberg will put customer benefits center stage in all its communication to make it easier for customers to find what they need in complex scenarios. It’s all about making things simpler, quicker, and less complicated.

In line with this new principle, these icons will be used to provide new levels of structure in the company’s communication and thus help customers orient themselves.

Demo centerVisitors got a sneak preview of the

new Heidelberg brand identity during the inauguration of the Print Media Center Commercial (PMC Commercial) at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site at the beginning of June.

Over 500 customers came from all over the world to mark the opening of the PMC Commercial, which covers an area totaling over 4,700 square meters. The visitors were treated to practical demonstrations of integrated print production with a constant focus on

customer benefits. The centerpiece of the PMC Commercial is an innovative presentation platform that uses interactive media to illustrate the aspects of workflow, consumables, and services and highlight their role in the overall process from the customer’s perspective when it comes to delivering high-quality, stable production.

Together with the Print Media Center Packaging, Wiesloch-Walldorf can now lay claim to the world’s largest demonstration center for commercial and packaging printing in the industry.

Run-up to Drupa 2016 Launching the new Heidelberg

brand identity at the inauguration of the PMC Commercial also marked the start of its global roll-out. By the time the drupa trade show is held from May 31 to June 10, 2016, in Düsseldorf, the new branding will have been introduced and implemented worldwide. Particular emphasis will be placed on any international adaptations required for the realignment, as market and customer focus are key here.

In the past, innovative technologies may have been enough to ensure future success, but now this depends much more on solutions designed to meet specific customer requirements.

Vijayawada’s J C Graphics has been awarded the distinction of being the first Indian print shop

to be certified as per ISO – 12647-2 (2013 version) Printing standards. The prestigious certification was bestowed by Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG, Germany, the leading offset printing press manufacturer in the world, on June 9, 2015, at an official event organized at JC Graphics’ Printing unit at Vijayawada. Klaus Nielsen, Managing Director- Heidelberg India handed the ISO certificate to RatnakarHegde, the Chairman and Founder of JC Graphics.

The ISO12647-2 certification sets the bars high and places higher demands on the excellence of print output. Quality-conscious print buyers are increasingly looking for print providers with ISO certification, which guarantees accountable quality control and consistency.

Heidelberg conferred the Certification as per ISO 12647–2 standards, after several rigorous rounds of tests on prepress, press and production, including print run on various substrates, dot-gain calibration and consistency of delta-E values. The ISO 12647–2 Certification ensures that there is no compromise on the excellence of quality. Heidelberg has already certified 150 print shops worldwide with ISO 12647-2.

On this occasion, JC Graphics and Heidelberg India, jointly organized an open-house to showcase the Speedmaster CD 102 six-color UV press with coating unit, a recent acquisition by JC Graphics and the first-ever installation in Andhra Pradesh. The demo included print jobs on various substrates to educate the participants on the prowess of the CD 102. The presentation was followed by a seminar on ‘ISO standards’ by Heidelberg India. We live in a world driven by innovation. The Emerging Future is to look to partner

with companies interested in creating the new industry paradigm. These industries will offer solutions instantly, constantly, with improved outcomes by orders of magnitude. Although packaging is a very mature industry, it too thrives and grows through a constant influx of innovation.

Vinsak is a name well known for introducing always a new paradigm to the printing industry. Now Vinsak introduces Synchroline – A Game Changer to the packaging industry. The Synchroline is capable of printing many different kinds of substrates like paper, light card board and flexible substrates. It is a true “Fully” Servo press versus a number of “Pseudo” servo presses now flooding the market. It is common practice for manufacturers today to put one servo at the in-feed and another at the out-feed whereas retaining a main motor and a mechanical line shaft and still call it a “servo” press.

Lombardi Synchroline is a 3-motors servo press. The way the motors in Lombardi are geared together is conceived in order to gain the best accuracy in register and to minimize the gear bars.

The “electronic shaft” keeps register very accurately by means of an independent servo per each print group. This printing press can be characterized as a modern working horse. It is equipped with printing groups governed singularly by brushless motors and the setting and maintenance of the printing register of the whole press is governed by the electric board with a system of register control. This enables to correct on real time the deviation from the register due to the extensions of the material. For the printing industry that looks for maximum versatility and the possibility of working on a wide gamma of materials.

Synchroline is equipped with A.B.S. printing unit. It has also the Hi-Fit system, an innovative system that is used

synchroline – a game-changer for Packaging industry

for print rolls allowing for immediate fitting of cylinders of different diameter with no need for an adapter. In fact print rolls lay on a special algorithmically - studied curve that enables to keep constant the printing pressure varying the roll diameter. Another feature is the Hi-Fix system: The plate cylinder is pneumatically clamped with a conical piston that grants irreversibility of motion and reduces motions and vibrations to a minimum. Hi-DynamiX system: The blade is pressured against the anilox roller with pneumatical system, determining an auto-adaptive pressure dynamic, resulting in the best ink distribution. Hi-InX system: When the machine stops, the ink roller (anilox) is first removed, followed (after a settable time) by the print cylinder, in order to clean ink in excess (an essential operation when using non-UV inks).

It is fully automatic electronic pre-registration system: minimum material waste, minimum waste of time, maximum precision. Fully automatic register controls with parameterization system for perfect registration on

extensible materials. It comes with electronic tension control for perfect tensioning of different substrates along with Quality analysis system.

The important thing for converters to remember about innovation is that it never ends. There is always something new and exciting on the horizon and the spoils of success belong to those who are able to first to capitalize on them.

Vinsak Label Printing Solutions offer an unbeatable combination of print quality, flexibility, versatility and productivity and are helping A&A meet the growing demands of its customers. All the Vinsak solutions are designed with overarching principles of profitability, quality, flexibility and sustainability in mind. Withthese guiding principles and a deep, intimate knowledge of its customers, Vinsak continues to be one of the industry’s leading innovators and supplier of products and solutions.

The coming year will hopefully see a spurt in Lombardi installations in India and the coming Label Expo in Brussels should be a good showcase for the same.

Industry NewsIndustry Newsesko packaging software, Kongsberg V20 sample maker installed at label Kingdom, chennai

Label Kingdom in Chennai started off with screen printing and then migrated to offset printing

for both commercial and packaging work. The company now focusses on packaging – folding cartons, rigid boxes and corrugated shipping cartons. Label Kingdom is a specialist in the garment segment and supplies packaging materials to most of the global brands in the garment and leather products industry in South India.

Label Kingdom clearly considers Esko as the leading design and prepress solution provider for packaging printing and production. This is why they chose Esko’s software and also purchased the Esko Kongsberg V20 sample making table for cutting and creasing packaging prototypes.

K.V. Prasad CEO of Label Kingdom says, “We strongly believe that the Esko’s solutions will help us produce high quality jobs and also improve our efficiency by identifying errors at a very early stage and avoid them as we design the packaging. This is because the tools which are part of the Esko solution follow standards prescribed by international bodies like ECMA. Also the tools help to complete the design activity at a faster rate than the usually used tools such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.”

“Another area where Esko Solutions helps us is in sample making. We usually receive files from customers for packaging printing. When we handle such jobs we encounter problems both in the design and at the finishing stage. This is a big headache that we face since it leads to lots of wastage in terms of material and press time in the printing stage. Sometimes it even leads to rejection of completed jobs from the customer. So it is always wise to make a complete sample of the customer file before we take it to final production. Once we have the sample made from the

for them to choose from. This helps us to increase customer satisfaction and also retain them in these competitive times.”

“Our belief is that packaging in India is on a growth path thanks to the continuous introduction of new consumer products such as smartphones and electronic gadgets amongst other things,” Prasad concludes.

Srihari Rao Director Sales for Esko India says, “Converters today are increasingly clear themselves on thadvantages of using Esko’s efficient software tools for prepress and the Esko Kongsberg sample making table for building quality, efficiency right into their processes from inception and avoiding errors in the entire production flow. As the industry matures Esko is well positioned with software, hardware, services and knowhow to support the demand for tools that can offer cutting-edge creativity and innovation.”

actual board that we need to print, then we can understand all the problem areas of the design and correct these before we can take the job for production. This process helps us to avoid errors thereby helping to reduce wastages. As a result our production efficiency also increases,” Prasad says.

Today Label Kingdom’s customers are well aware of the Esko solutions which are available and how these can help in production. Making samples before a carton is printed is critical. Also, when customers come for new customized designs, Label Kingdom can suggest innovative solutions using the Esko software tools and sample making machine.

Prasad says, “Esko’s solutions help us to make designs that are efficiently producible in large quantities. With this solution we can also make different designs and give the customer options

Thallo – an innovation for the flexible packaging

Apart from the huge value addition and employment involved in retail activities,

packaging has served the Indian economy by helping preservation of the quality and lengthening the shelf life of innumerable products – ranging from milk and biscuits to drug and medicines, processed and semi-processed foods, fruits and vegetables, edible oils, electronic goods etc. besides domestic appliances and industrial machinery and other hardware needing transportation.

The packaging industry growth has led to greater specialization and sophistication from the point of view of health (in the case of packaged foods and medicines) and environment friendliness of packing material. The demand on the packaging industry are challenging given the increasing environmental awareness among communities.

Over the past decade flexible packaging has emerged as arguably the most dynamic and innovative of packaging formats. The flexible packaging report gives a detailed analysis and forecast of the market on a global as well as regional level. This impressive rate of expansion is higher than the gross domestic product (GDP), suggesting the flexible packaging market

is growing quicker than well-developed and traditional rigid packaging markets. The SmithersPira report has forecasted the market to grow CAGR at 4.4% by 2019.

The growth in packaging industry is mainly driven by the food and pharmaceuticals packaging sectors. The large and growing Indian middle class, along with the growth in organized retailing in the country are fuelling growth in the packaging industry. In addition, expansion of food & beverage market, which is the largest application of flexible packaging, is expected to fuel the growth of the market. Rising consumer preference towards light weight, durable and highly aesthetic flexible packaging is expected to significantly fuel the growth of the market over the next few years.

The packaging industry in India is a mix of both organized medium to large players as well as very small players with a localized presence. The industry is comprised of a large number of manufacturers of basic materials,

converted packages, machinery and ancillary materials. With the need of adopting better packaging methods, materials and machinery to ensure quality has become very important for Indian businesses.

While Gravure is the market leader, Offset and flexography printing are both used for printing short run packaging, but in different ways. The biggest advantage of offset quality is often superior tothat of flexo, which becomes increasingly desirable in marketplace that strives to offer consumers a surfeit of choices. The booming label industry is slowly adapting to the global trend where offset occupies the foremost position for package printing, hosts of opportunities are opening up for converters and the suppliers.
