Like many other subjects management education has many
disciplines. Students of management have to compulsorily go
through the topics and principles under general management
combined with overview of all major disciplines of management.
However a postgraduate degree or diploma of two years has a
provision of specialising in a particular branch of management. Well
known branches of management include marketing, finance, human
resource etc. Operation management is a lesser known management
discipline but no less important than the ones generally talked about.
In general terms operations management is concerned with
converting materials and labour into desired goods and services in an
efficient manner with an objective of maximizing the profit of an
organization. It entails maximizing production by procuring and utilizing
available resources that include raw materials, people, equipment,
technology, information and others. It has more to do with planning,
designing, organising, controlling and optimising the process of
production. Operations management ensures that an unit efficiently
and successfully turns inputs into outputs. It is clear that operations
management is delivery oriented.
The success of operations management is decided in terms of
adherence to production schedule with quality and quantity of targeted
production.
Operations management shouldn’t be considered similar to
Logistics management. Operations management is wider and
Logistics management is just a part of it. Logistics management is
planning, execution and control of the procurement, movement and
stationing of workers, material and other resources in order to achieve
the objective of a campaign, plan, project or strategy. Logistics
management may very well be defined as the management of
inventory (of any type) in motion and rest.
Both manufacturing and service organizations need the function of
operations management which covers a process from beginning to
close. Manufacturing industries have flourished since decades and
centuries. Now with boom in services sector opportunities for
operations managers have become manifold. As an operations
management professional, one may add immense value to the
performance, profitability and customer service of an organization.
With such an objective, interested young people may explore career
opportunities in this branch of management.
Coverage: Operations management, too has a wide coverage. As a
student of the subject , you’ll be exposed to following topics among
others -

The Indira Gandhi National Open
University (IGNOU), established by an
Act of Parliament in 1985, has
continuously striven to build an inclusive
knowledge society through inclusive
education. It has major contribution in
increasing the Gross Enrollment Ratio
(GER) by offering high-quality teaching
through the Open and Distance Learning
(ODL) mode through its wide network of
Regional Centre and Learner Support
Centres throughout the country.
Mandate, vision and mission of the
University:
IGNOU began by offering two academic
programmes in 1987, i.e., Diploma in
Management (DIM) and Diploma in
Distance Education (DDE) with strength of
4,528 students. Today, it serves the
educational aspirations of more than 3
million students in India and other
countries. The mandate of the University
is to provide access to higher education to
all segments of the society; offer high-
quality, innovative and need-based
programmes at different levels, to all those
who require them; reach out to the
disadvantaged by offering programmes in
all parts of the country at affordable costs;
and promote, coordinate and regulate the
standards of education offered through
open and distance learning in the country.
The vision of IGNOU reads: “The Indira
Gandhi National Open University, the
National Resource Centre for Open and
Distance Learning, with international
recognition and presence, shall provide
seamless access to sustainable and
learner-centric quality education, skill-
upgradation and training to all by using
innovative technologies and
methodologies and ensuring convergence
of existing systems for large-scale human
resource development, required for
promoting integrated national
development and global understanding.”
To advance frontiers of knowledge and
promote its dissemination through
sustainable Open and Distance Learning
systems, seamlessly accessible to all,
including those hitherto unreached, from
among whom the leaders and innovators
of tomorrow will emerge, the University
shall:
Strengthen the development of the
National Resource Centre as a
proactive role model for high-quality
and learner-centric Open and Distance
Learning system;
Share professional capabilities and
resources to improve standards of
distance education in the country;
Develop networks, using emerging
technologies and methods, with global
reach for effective programme delivery;
Provide an intelligent and flexible
system of education to meet the
challenges of access and equity, and

collaboration and partnership;
Take education to the hitherto
unreached and promote
community participation for
local development through
life-coping skills;
Provide specific need-based
education and training
opportunities for continuous
professional development
and skill upgradation to in-
service professionals; and
Strive towards continuous
development of methods and
strategies for research and
development for generation of
knowledge in frontier areas,
including Open and Distance
Learning.
Over the years, IGNOU, with
its diverse programmes, low cost
and a wide network, has
succeeded to fulfill the country’s
expectations of providing
education to the marginalized
sections of society. Free of cost
education is being provided to all
jail inmates across the country. A
large number of SC/ST students
have been admitted to various
programmes of the University. At
present, under SCSP/TSP grant
unemployed SC/ST learners,
who are not taking benefit of fee
exemption/reimbursement from
any other source/agency, may
submit one admission form
without programme fee at the
online admission portal. For list
of such programmes and other
details learner may visit the
IGNOU website. The University
has been mandated to reach out
to the marginalized sections of
our society. The major steps
envisaged to attract learners
from the disadvantaged groups
taken by the University:
Enhancing access by
spreading the network of
study centres from the district
level to the block level;
Networking with SOUs and
CCIs and using ICT in a
proactive way in difficult
terrain and inaccessible
regions;
Strengthening the University's
presence in the North-East,
Jharkhand, Uttaranchal,
Chhattisgarh, Kalahandi-
Bolangir-Koraput region in
Orissa, Jaisalmer and Barmer
in Rajasthan and other low-
literacy regions;
Conducting special drives to
enroll marginalized groups
(Scheduled Castes,
Scheduled Tribes, differently-
abled, women learners) in the
niche-market programmes;
Using emerging and
innovative technologies to
provide access and
opportunities to the
differently-abled, tribals and
women by cloning the best
practices from successful
models;
Entering collaborations with
national agencies and NGOs
to increase the outreach of its
programmes.
Instituting special
scholarships, stipends and
fee waiver schemes with
Government and other
funding agencies to enable
disadvantaged groups to
pursue IGNOU programmes.
Uniqueness in Jurisdiction,
network, organizational
structure, and flexibility for
learners:
Indira Gandhi National Open
University (IGNOU) have
jurisdiction over the whole of
India and to the Study Centres
outside India and hence has
established a wide network of 56
Regional Centres (RC), 11
Recognized Regional Centres
(RRC) (i.e., 6 IGNOU-Army
RRC, 4 IGNOU-Navy RRC 1
IGNOU-Assam Rifles RRC) and
nearly 3000 Learner Support
Centres (LSCs) across the
country. The vast network of
RCs and LSCs extends the
outreach of IGNOU to the
hitherto deprived rural, remote,
socially and physically
disadvantaged segments of
population, providing them
access to quality and cost-
effective higher education in a
flexible manner.
With a view to develop
interdisciplinary programmes,
the University operates through
its 21 Schools of Studies viz.,

Besides the University has many
divisions to support various
student-related operations viz.,

(SRD), Material Production &
Distribution Division (MPDD),
Regional Services Division
(RSD), Student Evaluation
Division (SED), and International

Production Centre (EMPC),
National Centre for Disability
Studies (NCDS), Centre for
Internal Quality Assurance
(CIQA), Centre for Online
Education (COE) and Campus

look after the specialized
assigned activities.
In the tradition of Open
Learning, IGNOU provides
considerable flexibility in entry
qualification, place, pace and
duration of study to students.
The entry qualification for

NATIONALPrime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that there will
be no re-thinking on decision on Article 370 and CAA, Citi-
zenship (Amendment) Act, despite the pressure. Addressing
a public rally in Padav area of Chandauli district PM said, his
government took the decisions which were necessary in the
interest of the country. Despite pressure, we stand by our
decision and will remain so. On his day long visit to his Par-
liamentary Constituency Prime Minister Narendra Modi
launched 50 development projects worth more than rupees 1254 crore. He also
flagged off the Kashi Mahakaal Express to link Varanasi, Ujjain and Omkareshwar,
and dedicated to the nation the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Centre.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that no one can scrap Article 371 and the
government does not intend to do so. Speaking at the 34th Statehood Day Cele-
brations in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, Mr. Shah said that in August 2019 when
Article 370 was scrapped there was a rumour that 371 will also be removed.
Mr Shah said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wishes to make the entire Northeast a
problem-free region. The Minister said that Mr Modi is the only Prime Minister who
has visited the Northeastern region 30 times in the last 5 years. He said, Arunachal
Pradesh will play its role in fulfilling the dream of crossing the fivetrillion-dollar
economy. On the occasion, the Home Minister laid the foundation stone for various
developmental projects in the state.
India has said China's objection to Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Arunachal
Pradesh, does not stand to reason. Briefing the media in New Delhi, External Affairs
Ministry spokesman, Raveesh Kumar said, New Delhi's consistent position has
been that the state is an integral and inalienable part of the country. The spokesman
said, India is eagerly waiting President Donald Trump's visit. He said the visit will
strengthen the global and strategic ties.
Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal
took oath as Chief Minister of Delhi for the
third time. Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal
administered the oath of office and secrecy
to Mr Kejriwal and six Cabinet Ministers at
Ramlila Maidan in the national capital. Mr
Kejriwal has retained all the Cabinet Minis-
ters who were part of his last government.
They are Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Imran Hussain
and Rajendra Gautam. Later addressing the gathering, Mr. Kejriwal said, he wants
to work with Centre to make Delhi number one city.
India has expressed its solidarity with Chinese people and the government of China
in the fight against outbreak of Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19. In a statement, Indian
Ambassador to China Vikram Misri said, India will do everything within its means to
assist the people of China in this time of difficulty. He said, the Government of India
is soon providing a consignment of medical supplies to aid and assist China in tack-
ling this outbreak. He said, this is a concrete measure which will fully demonstrate
the goodwill, solidarity and friendship of the people and government of India with the
Chinese people. Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry has constituted central
teams of experts for examination of villages bordering Nepal for novel coronavirus
infection.
The Centre has reiterated its stand in the
Madras High Court that the convicts in the Rajiv
Gandhi assassination case cannot be released
without its approval. A petition by one of the
convicts Ms Nalini seeking her early release as
per the State Cabinet recommendation came
up for hearing last week. The Additional Solici-
tor General, ASG, Mr G.Rajagopalan said the
state cabinet recommendation will have zero-effect without the Centre's consent. He
also referred to the apex court order in a case filed earlier by the convicts which says
the Centre's concurrence for their release is necessary as the case was investigat-
ed by the CBI, a central agency.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has affirmed India's commitment towards the con-
servation of migratory species. He said, under the COP Presidency, India will take
the conservation of migratory birds to a new paradigm with active cooperation of all
the Central Asian Flyway Range Countries. He was speaking after inaugurating the
13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on the Conservation of Migra-
tory Species of Wild Animals at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar through video con-
ferencing. The Prime Minister asserted that focused species conservation pro-
grammes have shown encouraging results. He said, India has achieved its target of
doubling the number of tigers before the committed date of 2022.
The apex Court has directed the Centre to grant permanent commission to all
women officers in the Army who opt for it within three months. It said there will not
be any bar on giving them command postings. A bench headed by Justice D.Y.
Chandrachud rejected the Centre's argument of physiological limitations and social
norms for denying them permanent commission and command postings, saying it
are disturbing. The Court also observed that women officers will be eligible for
command posts and that barring women in the army from such posts was irrational
and against the Right to Equality. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has welcomed the
Supreme Court's judgement on permanent commission for women in the Army. Mr
Singh said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has supported the idea of permanent
commission for women and announced the change in policy in his Independence
Day speech in 2018.
