January , 2016 Vol. XLVII, No. 5 Gardening in Harmony with Nature President’s Message from Weej Baggaley As we embark upon a new year, I’d like to reflect on 2015 and marvel at how, well, weird a year it was, on a personal level, on a national level, and on a worldwide level. I’m pretty sure 2015 wouldn’t go down in my Top Five List of Most Awesome Years. Still, I’m happy to have lived through it, as that’s better than the alternative, and I’m happy to have shared my love of gardening (if not my mastery of gardening) with so many Garden Club friends, new and old, during 2015. I’m not much on New Year resolutions, but here’s my crack at New Year Garden-Specific Resolutions 2016: -- It’s not a sign of failure to call in some guys to help with the heavy gardening stuff. -- No one will mind if I hibernate for a month or two when it’s hot outside and the bugs are overstaying their welcome on my plants. Were those “resolutions”? Well, here’s one definitely: I resolve to continue enjoying our adventures with the San Clemente Garden Club, and learn something new every month. Like, how we can use common garden plants for medicinal purposes. That’s the topic at our upcoming meeting on Wednesday, January 6. Hope to see you there! San Clemente Garden Club P.O. Garden Therapy from Suzi Klickstein Our Thanksgiving craft was a hit with the happy folks at the RIO. Using recycled corks (donated by thoughtful club members) mini scarecrows were created by the clients, with the assistance of club volunteers; Tom Benton, Bette Langford, Doris Weinbaum, Lana Doyle, Teresa Whitney, Heidi Gibson, Jo Ann Moran and Suzi Klickstein. We volunteers are thankful for the opportunity to bring smiles to the many endearing people at the RIO. For our December activity at the RIO volunteers Lana Doyle, Simone Costes, Tom Benton, Anna Sarrada, Teresa Whitney, Barbara McLaughlin met at Suzi’s house to prepare the materials needed to make Christmas cards with figures of snowmen, Santas, and penguins. Volunteers also prepared pieces to be used for making ornaments. We will be meeting Thursday, January 7 at 10:30 at Suzi’s house to prepare materials for a winter craft. Then we will meet on January 20 at 12:45 at the RIO to do the winter craft with the delightful RIO folks. If you would like to partake in one or both of these activities contact Suzi at [email protected].

Garden Tour 2016 Planning Meetingfrom Patricia Holloway, Garden Tour ChairIt’s never too soon to start preparations for the SC Garden Club Tour set for Saturday, June 4, 2016. My home was on the tour last year and this will be my first time organizing this critical fundraiser for our club. I will need help from veteran volunteers as well as newcomers in all of these categories: Garden Selection, Publicity and Marketing, Design and Printing (of tour guide and flyers), Event Day Docents, Ticket Sales, Mailings, Tastings and/or Lunch Coordinators, and Sponsorships. This is truly a group effort! Think of how you’d like to be involved and then come to the first planning meeting at my home. And of course, be on the lookout for interesting and lovely gardens in San Clemente, San Juan, and Dana Point to include on the tour. If you have a garden in mind, whether your own or a friend’s, just call or email me and we’ll get in touch with the homeowner to arrange a friendly visit.

Garden Book Recomendation: from Heidi GibsonSo you think you know roses? A must read for all rosarians, “Chasing the Rose” by Andrea di Robilant, published in 2014 by Random House and available at the OC Library. It is a true story about an Italian who researches the origin of an unknown, rare pink rose found on his ancestral family estate located near Venice, Italy. Robilant chronicles the efforts of many early breeders (European horticulturists who brought back rose cuttings from China) leading to the roses we have today. An early rosarian was Empress Josephine Bonaparte (Napoleon’s wife) who had workers propagate thousands of cuttings at her chateau “Malmaison” in France. He weaves in the lives of many fabulous Italian and French gardeners who help him on his quest. I won’t tell you the final result, but Josephine is involved . . .

Roberta Lloyd (Bertie) [email protected] I’ve lived in San Clemente since 1960 and was born in Hollywood. I’ve been involved with the Garden Club since 2004. I’ve been Historian, Nominating Chairman, Awards Chairman, and Membership Co-Chair. I love working in the garden because of the peacefulness, plus good exercising. It is fun for me to create miniature gardens and watch the progress of succulents as they cycle through the year with many surprises. I enjoy walking with friends on the pier, golfing, and volunteering at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. I am also a member of AAUW, DAR,and Altar Guild at St. Clemente’s. I enjoy meeting with retired teachers for lunch at various restaurants. I taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades at R. H. in Dana Point for 26 years. My husband and I like to travel to the Central Coast and Temecula for wine tasting, eating out and shopping. My husband has a son in Los Osos who shows us a great time around Morro Bay! Two of my sons live in San Clemente and one is in Santa Fe, NM. I love playing golf with my San Clemente sons. I have 7 grandkids and in March I’ll have my first great granddaughter! Genealogy is one interesting thing for me to work

on in my spare time. We have a 14-year-old cat named Prince, who enjoys our attention when he’s expecting it! Pet peeve: motorists not stopping for red lights! Favorite charity: Boys’ and Girls’ Club and VFW Just finished reading Killing of Reagan by Bill O’Reilly Favorite TV Show: “Wheel of Fortune”

January Propagation Workshop from Teresa WhitneyWe’re getting ready for our biggest plant sale of the year on April 9th– GardenFest. We like to start propagating now to make sure all the plants are healthy and well rooted by the time April rolls around. Get your calendars out and mark down: FRIDAY, JANUARY 29th, 9:00am at Teresa Whitney’s house, 4010 Calle Bienvenido, San Clemente. Bring your hats, gloves, clippers and cuttings! Potting soil will be provided. This is also a great opportunity to catch up after the holidays and maybe get to know some of the other members a little better.

Our Holiday Luncheon, Dec. 2, 2015from Teresa WhitneyWhat a fun Holiday Luncheon! We had a fabulous time, and Talega did another great job with the food and festive decorations. Jeremy Wiggins, the director of the San Clemente Madrigals brought the award winning high school students in to entertain us. What a great way to start the holiday season. Special kudos to everyone for their support and generosity. We had an amazing amount of gift items donated, which made the raffle so much fun and very lucrative. Elyse Crane (Ways & Means) did a great job of managing the raffle and kept it flowing. $387 cash (although the letter said $377)was raised which was donated to Family Assistance Ministries as well as an SUV filled with new toys. FAM was very grateful and thanked everyone at the SC Garden Club. Wishing everyone a New Year filled with health and happiness.
