There were songs, speeches, poster making, Naat andQirat practice for a whole week leading up to August 14when the entire student body, faculty and staff all donnedthe national colors of ‘green and white’ to strut the frontcourtyard full of glamour and clamor.

The entire atmosphere was charged with a mood ofpatriotism whereas on the other hand was skepticism ofthe outcome from the ‘ long march’ proceeding to thecapital city.

Greenwich University started Pakistan’s 68th Independ-ence Day Celebration program with a Qirat recitation, bythe eloquent Arabic speaking student Shahroz Reigi, whorecited a verse in classical high & low notes, atypical ini-

tiating our programs. Just as we were celebratingPakistan’s 68th anniversary, Shahroz, our scholar, wascelebrating his 21st birthday.

Then, there was a Dua, by a first semester studentMehwish Misbah after which everyone was invited to theflag hoisting ceremony by the Vice Chancellor, Ms.Seema Mughal, Director Administration and Personnel,Mr Saeed Mughal with all faculty and students. Everyonecollectively sang the national anthem and soon followedthe in chorus, the national song, ‘Hum Zinda QuomHain’.

Mr. Ahmed Kamran, constantly motivated the crowd byhis valor inspiring adjectives when he called on studentsone after the other to render patriotic songs and speeches.Samir Ansari a student, plays the key board, is a yank forthe crowd and kept the audience entertained. AbsaarHussain, a masters student, under the name Mir ZohairAli, launched his first national song album on August 14thas well. He sang and entertained the crowd with a voicewhich was nurtured and matured at Greenwich over theyears.

Sitting below the raised platform in front of the stage wasa group of children from Sirat ul Jannah, a home caringfor children, who are a part and parcel of all our agespecific programs. There was fun and frolic for them inthe back yard as all kinds of swings, goodies, candy floss,

The seminar titled Public Awareness Seminar onTransplantation was organized by the students of MassCommunication & Media Studies Department GreenwichUniversity Karachi as their final project under thesupervision of their course in charge Ms. Tahira Tariq. This seminar was held in collaboration with Sindh Insti-tute of Urology Transplantation (SIUT) on Wednesday,24th September, 2014 at Agha Hassan Abidi Auditorium,Dewan Farooq Medical Centre SIUT Karachi.

During initial meeting with SIUT officials, it was revealedthat a short film on decease organ donation is alreadyproduced by Hum TV. A short film was required to beproduced on living organ donation so both aspects oforgan donation could be covered. It was a big challenge

and at the same time a great opportunity to display ourstudents’ work. The challenge was accepted and the firstgroup produced Pashtawa. Our second group collected donations from students ofGreenwich University who by cutting their personal andcanteen expenses donated a handsome amount to SIUT.Our third group was very lucky to get an early suitabledate before their final examination from the busy scheduleof Dr. Adeeb Rizvi for Public Awareness Seminar andscreening of films. The seminar started at its scheduled time with the recitationfrom Holy Quran by Dr. Nasir Luck of SIUT. It was wellattended by faculty members, students and general public.A very impressive welcome address and introduction ofSIUT was given by Professor Dr. Adeeb Rizvi directorSIUT. According to him four decades ago SIUT started itsjourney as an eight bed ward in Burns Unit of CivilHospital Karachi. In 1991 it was granted the status of anInstitute. In 2005 was created as a charitable trust for thebenefit of the public aiming to provide medical facilitiesand financial assistance to those who are at the end stageof renal diseases. facilities spread over 400,000 sq ft. at its Karachi hospital,SIUT is regionally one of the most well equipped centerfor renal diseases and transplantation. Professor Ejaz Ahmed of SIUT discussed theTransplantation topic. According to him each of us cansave lives or help as many as 50 people by donatingorgans and tissues from our body. He explained that thereare two types of organ donation. First is the deceasedorgan donation in which organs of a clinically deadperson are transplanted. Second is living organ donation inwhich a person donates his organs to a patient whoseorgans have failed due to some illness. In Pakistan anestimated 100,000 people die each year due to end stageorgan failure. This figure includes 25,000 patients withkidney failure, 50,000 with liver and 10,000 with heartfailure. The main reason for majority of these cases is thewant of an organ donor. While there is hope for patientswith kidney failure due to availability of living donors, the answer for patients with end stage liver, heart orpancreas failure is deceased organ donation. He describedorgan donation as a life saving medical process.Sultana Siddiqui, director of Hum TV productions, stressed the need for organ donation and urged our younggeneration to come forward to donate organs. She praisedthe efforts of students and Greenwich University forproducing short film Pashtawa.Dr. A.Q. Greenwich University (GU): Tell us about your job?

Imran Khan ( I K ): I am Telenor Pakistan’s RegionalManager - South (Sindh & Baluchistan Provinces) forCorporate & SME Sales. Telenor Pakistan (with acurrent subscriber base of 35 million within 10 yrs inPakistan) is 100% owned by the Telenor group which isamong the Largest Mobile Operators of the World with172 million subscribers. In my current role, I lead a teamof 35 dynamic individuals who penetrate deep into themarket with GSM (Voice, SMS, 2G/3G Internet etc.) andnon-GSM (Easy Paisa Mobile Wallet Accounts,Tracking Solutions etc.) products. Our Clients consists ofan assortment of Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) andLarge Corporates (e.g. K-Electric, Engro Foods, House ofHabib etc.)

(GU): What competition do you face with otherTelecommunication companies?

( I K ): With the increase of tele-density in the marketand cut throat competition, the market size is gettingshorter by the day. And to spice up the proceedings, thegeneral customer demand on the other hand is alsobecoming more price-intensive where masses areswitching operators over meagre tariff differentials. Allof this added to the fierce Govt. Regulations for Telcosand planned/unplanned closure of mobile services hascondensed the margins for Operators substantially. Sooverall, the competition in the market is basically gearedtowards fancy/crowd-pulling ATL adverts and tariffchanges.

(GU): What is 3G? And why is it hyped so much?

( I K ): 3G is a phenomenal advancement in technologywith unlimited features and endless possibilities in thefield of mobile internet. Though as a Nation we have de-layed the launch of this premium technology for a longtime, it will take another few years to actually gain valuedadvantage from its use. According to a survey, an esti-mated 3.43 billion people globally depend on mobile serv-ices as integral part of their daily lives and these servicesare actually redefining the way people communicate on adaily basis. There have been major advancements in thefield of Medicine and Technology itself with the advent of3G/4G services the world over. Data allows us to makechanges in the industry by allowing to push devices, topush broadband and penetration into mobile applications.3G opens up many revenue portals for all the Telcos al-lowing them to commoditize voice.

(GU): What skills are required in your position on aday to day basis?

Also, on a professional scale, Iam required by my job description of be a good listener,a conflict resolver and a good negotiator.

( I K ) Well, two things! The first one is a good GPA. It is amyth that GPA does not matter in professional life, well itdoes! It would not matter when it is your third or fourth jobbecause then one's CV represents the reputation but in firsttwo jobs it matters a lot as the employer has no yardstickto measure your talent so he/she fully relies on your GPA.

And secondly, extra curriculum activities are veryimporant. I realized it when I started working, the em-ployers really prefer those who were in any sort of extra

curriculum activities. For example captains of sportsteams or heads of debate teams are considered to possessleadership qualities and are assumedly better at conflictresolution.

(G U ): Your one weakness and one strength?

( I K )I am a very softhearted person so, I tend to givepeople more time than usual to sort themselves out andsometimes people take advantage of this. This is myweakness. And my strength is that I am not a political per-son, I am a very straightforward person, I do not careabout the repercussions, and I never sugarcoat.

(G U ): Could you please tell us about your family life?

( I K ) Family life is very challenging because me and mywife work full time. We only get to see our children afterwe come home from work. We try very hard on theireducation. Our lifestyle has become a bit western, mean-ing, we work the entire week but we utilize our weekendsas we try to coverup for the days we were not fully avail-able. We take kids to parks, for breakfast and lunch, tomalls, and if we plan on staying at home then we watch acartoon together or play video games as me and my eld-est son love playing them.

(G U ): What has Greenwich University given you?

( I K )Well, besides education, it has given me confidence. The confidence given by Greenwich University hasproven to be quite handy. It has enabled me to face chal-lenges of the corporate sector. Thanks to our faculty be-cause they are the only ones who taught us how to speakin front of people without hesitation.v

The seminar was held on September 10, 2014, atGreenwich University’s auditorium, where all studentsgathered for the eccentric point of views of the guestspeakers, on the topic “Future of Media in Pakistan”.

The seminar started off with Mina Fatima introducing thetopic to the audience and inviting Mir Shahrose for therecitation of the Holy Quran, right after which Dr AkhlasAhmed was on stage to introduce the guests and for wel-come addressing, inviting them to give their opinion oneby one.First one to speak was Mr Hafeez Khattak, who is aSenior Journalist and chief bureau of Karachiupdate.com.He had a poetic manner of speech and spoke veryoptimistically about the bright future of Pakistani Media. He compared it with the past saying “ first there used to bejust one channel (PTV) , now there are more than 50

channels running”. “Initially there was only one T.Vanchor and now there are many”. He also spoke about theNew Media which is the Internet, taking over the youthimmensely. He concluded the future of Pakistani Mediaby saying that there will be a time when channels will berunning through smartphones. And the media world willbe in everyone’s pocket.

The second guest was Mr Shahzad Khan, an anchor ofNews One, also a political analyst. He changed the at-mosphere of the room with his hilarity and humorous wayof speech. He compared Pakistani T.V channels to a 15year old child who plays with people’s emotions yet en-tertains them, who disturbs them with disasters false news

yet gives them the glee that’s needed. Just because forhim Pakistani media was a 15 year old for him hence, hedid not speak pessimistically about it but with his highspirits got the youngsters in the room interact with him,

answered their questions and motivated them to join thefield and make it better.

Mr. Javed Mehr was the last one to speak, he is the chiefpattern of Siindh Public Library and head of Sindh T.V.He spoke with a distinct Sindhi accent, which a lot ofstudents seemed so enjoy. He talked about interior Sindh, how the media has spread all over the rural areas of Sindhas well. He referred just not the electronic media but theprint media as well. His exuberance about the future ofPakistani Media revolved mainly on the bases of howthere are channels in different regional languages and notjust that but even newspapers being published in regionallanguages which could be understood by all, based ontheir location. He concluded by saying media of Pakistanis penetrating everyone and believe it or not it’s gettingfaster day by day. It was a very interactive and motivational session for themedia students of Greenwich University. Which not justenlightened them with the future of Pakistani Media buttheir own future as well. In the end, the 3 very propitious and encouraging guestswere given appreciation shields by Dr Sher Sultan and MrZafar Iqbal Saifi.Vote of Thanks was by Anum Komal,Rabia Nizam and Hadia Rais.v

Greenwich University (GU): Could you pleaseenlighten us with more information of your businessand the nature of your job?

Ayesha Leghari (A L): I am currently working for Green-star as the head of social and behaviour change commu-nication department, it is a new phenomenon and it is quitesimilar to what commercial organisations do in terms ofmarketing. And as the name simple indicates, the role is tochange the mindset of individuals and it is not just to adopta particular product but also how to live a healthy life. Thenature of the business is family planning, birth spacing, and mother and child's health.

(GU): What is Greenstar? When and how did it start?

(A L): Greenstar works through the private sector andwith the Government of Pakistan, to inform and empowerpeople and improve access to quality, affordable healthproducts and services. The focal point of all Greenstar'sefforts is "Sitara" – the Pakistani woman with a need forhealthcare. We work towards helping "Sitara" meet herhealth needs, and those of her family.

In Pakistan 25% of married women have an unmet needfor family planning. Maternal mortality remains high, atan estimated 276 deaths per 100,000 live births. Infantmortality remains at 78 deaths per 1000 live births 1.

In order to help meet this gap in provision of health serv-ices, Greenstar offers a range of over 20 socially mar-keted2 products and services for family planning, reproductive health, mother and child health, tuberculo-sis, nutritional supplements for children and safe water.Greenstar's products are distributed through a nation-widenetwork of over 7000 franchised clinics, 75,000 retail out-lets and community based distribution. The private sectorsocial franchise health outlets are strengthened by Green-star's training and health services team, which enhancesskills of service providers and quality of services.

Recently, Greenstar has partnered with the public sectorand donor agencies to implement voucher schemes, whichprovide subsidized access to institutionalized health carefor mothers. The long-term goal of integrating maternalhealth and family planning initiatives is to increase accesspoints for the provision of information and uptake of services.

At Greenstar we believe that as we meet the health needsof "Sitara", we meet the needs of a nation.

(GU):What is the vision and mission of Greenstar?

(A L): Our VisionGreenstar envisions a Pakistan where people plan theirfamilies and have improved maternal and child health andreduced tuberculosis burden. Greenstar aims to be an or-ganization of competent professionals, passionate aboutimproving the lives of people in Pakistan. Our MissionTo improve the quality of life of low-income peoplethroughout Pakistan by increasing access to and use ofhealth products, services, and information.

(GU):Who is Ayesha Leghari in personal life?

(A L): I am mother of two boys, my personal life is dedi-cated to my children, and it revolves around them. Duringthe day hours I'm completely professional, but as soon asI reach home, my role completely transforms into being amother. I help my sons with their homework and try tospend quality time with them.

(GU): Tell us about your childhood, how was it dif-ferent?(A L): My childhood was very conventional; my father

was a bureaucrat so I moved from city to city after almostevery three years, which led me to make friends in everypart of this country. I was the only sister of two olderbrothers, so my childhood was quite boyish.

(GU): How do you involve and motivate your staffwhen an important company's strategic decision isneeded to be made?

(A L): My strategy is to take them along, at times strate-gies are not trickled down to the second-tier or the third-tier, but I try to involve them. I sit with my team and webrainstorm, then we place our thoughts randomly some-where on my room's door/window on sticky notes andthen we try to organise them. So in that way, they are in-volved in the decision making process. (GU): If you get a second chance to study, would youjoin any other institute, which one would you chooseand why?(A L): If I'm to re-select any field, it would not be anyother but marketing and the institute would be no otherbut Greenwich University. In past 10 years of my profes-sional life, I have met people from different institutes butthe grooming which Greenwich University has provided isfar more. I was initially an introvert when I joined Green-wich, but it groomed me in becoming an extrovert.

(GU): How did Greenwich University nurture yourpassion?

(A L): I think the faculty that we have, had played a verygreat role. The classes that I attended were not just re-volving around the subject matter or the books but, it wasmore interaction, sharing experiences, and learning fromour professor's experiences. I had Principles of Marketingas one of my courses and I started to develop my interestin marketing and this way I discovered myself. AndGreenwich University is one of the leaders in the field ofcommunication.

(GU): What are the essential tools for an effective com-munication?

(A L): I think one of the most basic mistake that wemake while developing any communication material orany communication message is that we tend to put outperceived opines and perceived knowledge into thecommercial campaign that we are developing, we willnot really focus on the consumer's insight and we assumeour target audience to think in a particular manner, andwe apply all our strategies revolving around thatparticular thought. So I think, one if the most importanttool is consumer's insight.

(GU): What is your perception of GreenwichUniversity?

(A L): My perception of Greenwich University is verystrong, I think I am who I am, is because of GreenwichUniversity. There is not a single platform where I havenot been appraised, be it an International platform orwherever I have been appraised, I have always men-tioned that my grooming has come from GreenwichUniversity. (GU): Would you like to share some memories fromGreenwich University that are close to your heart?(A L): Sure! I got engaged while I was still studying inGreenwich University, I met my soulmate there only. There is another cherished memory that I have, I receiveda Gold Medal during my convocation and my son was sixmonths old, I walked down the aisle wearing that medaland later putting it on my son. I still have a picture fromthat day and it's framed on a wall in my house.

(GU):How would you define your stay at GreenwichUniversity?(A L): Phenomenal! If it is to be concluded in one word.whatever I have learnt at Greenwich University hascontributed substantially towards my success in myprofessional life. v

Greenwich Television Station is envisioned to be astudent television station run by Greenwich Universitywith the help of students broadcasting University newsand student produced soap operas, news bulletins, enter-tainment programs, music shows and much more. Work-ing for GTV is not only restricted to the media studiesstudents, but the students from all other disciplines willbe encouraged to work as their extracurricular activity.

It is proposed that from administrative point of view GTVwill work as broadcast journalism laboratory and fromfinancial point of view initially it will be supported byGreenwich University and afterwards it will become self-sufficient by receiving its budget from advertisementsbroadcasted on the channel.

As our first step towards GTV, students of Theories ofCommunication I & 2 and students of News Writing andReporting as their final project organized an event namedas Screening of GTV on Saturday, 24th May 2014.

The aim of the event was to provide a platform for mediastudents to display their creativity and the result of theirhard work in front of the world and give their work due re-spect and admiration it deserves. Different programs pro-duced by students were shows as a broadcast from GTVand was displayed on big screen. Media professionalsfrom the field were also invited to give expert commentsand to motivate students.

Famous news anchor and producer Mr. Shahariyar Sajidof Ajj TV was invited to grace the event and to commenton news and documentary section of GTV. Mr. Shahariyarholds a masters degree in electronic media from KarachiUniversity and has worked with Waqat News Channel,A-Plus Channel and Indus News & Indus Vision. He is

currently working as producer at Ajj TV.

The newscoverage and photography was unbelievable.

Greenwich Bonfire edition was a video of different eventsand life within Greenwich University. The most excitingpart of this program was its unique coverage of an eventnamed as Pet Show held at Greenwich University.

My Father — My Ultimate Strength !

FAIZAN ALI (Son)My father was a great man and forever will be. He parted a weekback but he is alive and well in our hearts. He lived his life withfull devotion to his family, and he never thought about anythingother than us, not even himself. My father lived an honest life andtaught us to do the same. When we are young our parents; partic-ularly our fathers; are our superheroes. They are the perfect peo-ple who always have the answers to everything in life but whenwe start getting older we rebel against them. We begin to believethat we are smarter than them and that we can’t rely on them.

However, through all of that, something changes and we matureand become adults. We come to this point where we realize thatthey were right all along. Life is scary and tough but parents arethere to help guide us through. They act as our umbrella in the rain;they themselves get soaked but do all they can to keep us dry. Theyguide us through by sharing their wisdom and their experiences.Though they may not be perfect human beings as we had perceivedthem to be but they do their best to protect us from harm.

My father was one such man. He may have had flaws but his goodqualities outweighed them. He was a man of integrity who neversold his morals. He was a man who had answers to almost everyquestion. He was a man who sacrificed his desires for his family. He was a man with a good sense of humor and wisdom. Peopleloved his presence - regardless of their age. He was also a man oftragedy; he lost his father at a young age when he was in collegeand from that time he had to support his family and study at thesame time. Life wasn’t kind to him but he never complained. Hekept his composure and held his head high. He never felt inferiorto anyone; people still talk about how confident he was at meet-ings, at conferences and at seminars. He never complained abouthis worries. He was man who was everything to us.

To say that we are sad over his demise would be an understate-ment. He was everything to us, our shelter, our mentor and ourfriend. He gave us all that we could but we couldn’t give him any-thing in return. He deserved a lot more for what he did for every-

one. He loved us no matter what we did; he was always there forus. They say that time is a great healer but even time can’t heal thiswound. We doubt we’ll ever be able to really get over our regretsover the things unsaid, things undone and the hugs ungiven. Ouronly solace is that he lived his life on his own, held his head highand did what he could for everyone around him.

You were a great man and you will be missed. You did well. I hopeI can live the life you wanted me to live and do half the things thatyou did for your family. We miss you and will forever love you

SHAHAN ALI (Son)My dad was more than a father to me; he was my best friend, withwhom I used to share every single thing in my life. I could talk tohim about anything in this world without hesitation. No matterhow I acted, he always used to stand by me and guide me throughall the problems. No matter how many times I failed, he stood byme and showed me the way and helped me get across the odds. Hemade me learn a lot not by saying anything but by having faith inme and having his hand on my shoulder.

A smile on his face always gave boost to my confidence, by whichI could conquer anything in this world. When my dad used to lookat me and say , “mera beta”, it gave me so much strength that Icould overcome any barrier and reach anything in lightning speed.Hugging him used to make me feel alive and calm as if all myworries and sorrows were washed away. I miss him, I miss him somuch, I can’t believe he’s gone, I still feel his presence every-where I go as if he’s with me guiding me through. I can’t controlmy emotions right now I have so much to write and so much to tellthe world about my dad, but my hands are shivering.

Every family has problems and our family did too. Problems makefamily bonds stronger, but this black cloud that was surroundingour family made us weak. It sucked the soul out of my father andjust because of that evil mist my dad had a change in behavior, but we all managed to pull through because of the love my dadgave us. He loved us a lot; he loved us so much that it can’t be putinto words. He was so full of life, courageous and strong that henever gave up in his life.

Maroof had been one of the pioneer members of Greenwich University. He had worked in various capacities and had alwaysbeen a strong pillar of Greenwich. Dedicated, cooperative, loving, caring and considerate were some of his personality traits which

had made him the apple of everyone’s eye.

A Quran Khawani was arranged on Friday October 10, 2014 on account of the sudden demise of Mr. Maroof on October 6,2014. All the faculty, staff and students participated in this Quran Khawani. It was indeed a moment of grief for the

entire clan of Greenwichians.

He helped everyone around him, and just by one smile he couldlight up everyone’s day. An amazing cook, he always used to beexcited about barbeques, dinners and lunches. He made the bestfood I have ever tasted. He loved to bring people together andplan family get together. The aura he had around him kept every-one happy and bought a smile on everyone’s faces. I can still hearhis laughter in my ears and feel his presence in our house. I missmy dad and all the things he used to say to me, I wish I could hughim once more, I wish he could guide me through right now andshow me the way out like he always used to do. My dad lovedme, he loved us all.

I never had to do anything, he used to do everything for us, I re-member whenever I had any problems, I just had to give him onecall or message and my work was done. I never realized howmuch I love my dad until now. He was my hero, my role modeland my friend without whom my life is empty.

This was a part of life’s bitter truths that my father had to leave uslike this. This is all a part of life, and my dad taught us to be strongand never lose hope. He brought us up as fighters hence we willkeep up the fight and make him proud. ALLAH is great and doeseverything for a reason, and I know he has something greatplanned for our family. May ALLAH rest his soul in eternal peace,AMEEN. Dad I have no idea how I am going to heal this pain, but I promise you I will and InshahAllah with the help ofAlmighty I will make things better ! I love you and will love youtill my last breath

“Bharatanatyam is Joshinder Chaggar’s first love. Thislove for dance has morphed and deepened over the years;something she has immersed herself in. It has inspired herto reinvent herself and discover her passion for life andart — whether acting or writing or simply teaching dance. She came to Greenwich to enlighten students aboutfreedom of expression. She danced without music, tosignify that barriers can only hold u back if you let them. Her dance revolved around expression of freedom, sheshowed how we are only bound by the chains we allow topull us down.

She depicted a bird who was free to do whatever it wantedto, soaring freely across the skies, moving from one placeto another without a care in the world. Chaggar demon-strated that borders only hold back human- and bordersare created by man himself. We limit ourself and then areupset about it.

Born in India to a Sikh family, Chaggar grew up in Lagos,Nigeria and Geelong in Australia, and spent her childhoodmastering the Indian classical dance styles of Kathak andBharatanatyam. The dance form that she is most passion-ate about, however, is Bollywood. “As a child, I was aBollywood fanatic,” she says — something she learnt andperfected, practicing for long hours while she was a stu-dent at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.Even when working full-time in marketing in Melbourne, she continued to train and studied contemporary dance atDeakin University.

After moving to Pakistan in 2007, acting is what Chaggarhas been drawn to the most: “I am just enjoying it becauseit’s a newer art form for me,” she says, adding that it is awelcome break from dancing and something she seesherself doing more of. As with everything else she does, she delved into the field with dedication and intensity, making her theatre debut with Katha’s play Mohabbat BhiQayamat Bhi. Her enthusiasm and energy paid off whenshe received rave reviews for her performance. “I wasreally proud of myself. I am still learning Urdu and thesubtle differences in pronunciations of letters like the kh.To know that I could be on stage with veterans like SaniaSaeed and Rehan Sheikh and hold my own; it was anamazing feeling,” she says.

She has taken on more roles: she can currently be seen onHum TV’s Aye Dasht-e-Junoon, in Sabiha Sumar’supcoming feature Rafina, as well as the short film Poshak. While she sees herself doing more acting in the nearfuture, dance is something, she emphasises, will alwaysbe a part of her life. In Pakistan, in particular, Chaggarfeels teaching dance has more of a purpose. “It’s likedance therapy, the students stand taller, the dupattas comeoff,” she points out.v
