kinds of diversity. The apostle Paul suggests in Galatians3:28 that “In Christ’s family there can be no division intoJew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Amongus you are all equal (The Message).” Race, gender, and

socioeconomic status are not todivide us.

Our culture, it seems, has attimes promoted “diversity fordiversity’s sake.” George FoxUniversity is committed to form-ing Christian community withinbiblically defined diversity. Notall behaviors are acceptable to bepracticed within the George Foxcommunity, but all persons are tobe valued as God values them.

Our Blueprint for Diversity,reported in this issue of Life, is a new step in seeking bib-lical diversity throughout the University. This documentmakes the statement that we are committed to work specif-ically on racial and ethnic diversity.

Our nation has a rather dismal record of race relations.The Christian church also has not fared well in this regard.We continue to find that people of different races and eth-nicities do not worship together.

While the Blueprint is not a total or quick fix, I am com-mitted to working with this document and seek to betterreflect Jesus’ call for community with appropriate diversi-ty at George Fox University.

Community With Diversity

George Fox University, over many years, has been inthe business of community formation.

It always has been important for George Fox people toknow and support one another. We continue to be a placewhere people matter, where there is strong identity ofemployees and students with the institution, and where wecare deeply for one another. Community is important toprovide the security of a sense of belonging, which we allneed and want.

Especially in recent years, the American culture hasemphasized the importance of individuals and the diversi-ty among us. Each person is a unique creation of God, andour individual characteristics are important. We used totake pride in the American “melting pot.” We now realizethat, as a result, we have sometimes not heard voices thatneed to be heard. Voices that are not dominant tend not tobe heard.

Is it possible to have both community and diversity?Individuals need to be part of a community – and also to berecognized for their special contributions. At times, it isimportant that small groups speak and be heard as uniquevoices in a larger community.

Can we “have it all?”When people think of community, it is usually defined

as a smaller, homogeneous group. Churches, universities,and clubs often have achieved strong community becausethe members are a lot alike.

I believe homogeneity is a “cheap” way to achieve com-munity. Our commitment to Christ demands a higher anddifferent approach to community than merely being simi-lar. Jesus said he would draw all persons to him. Jesus isthe “glue” which bonds us as a community.

Athletic trainingprogram earnsaccreditationGeorge Fox University gained accredita-

tion for its athletic training program inOct. 2001, making it just one of three col-leges in Oregon — and just one of sevenChristian colleges nationally — to offer anaccredited undergraduate program leading tocertification as an athletic trainer.

The accreditation is especially importantgiven upcoming changes in the requirementsfor certification.

In many states, including Oregon, athletictrainers must be certified by the NationalAthletic Trainers Association (NATA). Since themid-1980s, George Fox has offered aninternship program that prepares athletictraining students for the NATA exams. Thatorganization, however, is phasing out theinternship route leading to certification.

After 2003, students will be allowed totake the NATA exam only if they have gradu-ated from an accredited athletic training pro-gram. Others wanting to be certified will berequired to pursue a graduate degree.

Work toward accreditation at George Foxgoes back several years, according to DaleIsaak, head athletic trainer and an assistantprofessor of health and human performance.The past two years since the GFU programwas given candidacy status were particularlyrigorous, he says, but the University had theadvantage of having a well-established acad-emic and clinical program.

Author, historian, and futuristLeonard Sweet has a newdescriptor for his book cov-

ers: Distinguished Visiting Professorat George Fox University.

The affiliation with the Newberg-based University and its Portland-based seminary was announced byPresident David Brandt in January.

Sweet is the author of the trilogyof books SoulTsunami, AquaChurch,and SoulSalsa, written as third-mil-lennium resources to help leaderscome to terms with contemporarypostmodern culture. Each has its ownWeb site and multimedia compo-nents, some of which have receivednational awards and one Grammynomination.

Working with George Fox Evangeli-cal Seminary, Sweet will bring leader-ship to its Doctor of Ministry Program ina variety of ways. He will teach one ofthe courses for each of the doctoralcohorts and will facilitate at least oneretreat — or “advance,” as he prefers tocall it — for each group. He will alsoengage a select group of Doctor of Min-istry Program students in a mentoringrelationship that emphasizes postmodernchurch leadership and that is electronic,participatory, and experiential.

Boise Centeroffers Idahocommencement,new majorGeorge Fox University’s Boise Center is

offering more options to adult learnersin Idaho and eastern Oregon.

The University held its first Idaho com-mencement for graduates of the Boise Centeron Nov. 10. Previously, students had to travelto Newberg to formally receive their degrees.While they will still have that choice, theoption of participating in a local ceremonyallows more family and friends to attend.

George Fox President David Brandt gavethe commencement address and presenteddiplomas to 36 graduates. They join 230other students who have earned degreesthrough the Boise Center.

Also in November, the Boise Center heldits first class for a degree-completion pro-gram leading to a bachelor of science inmanagement and business information sys-tems (MBIS). While the MBIS major has beenoffered through the University’s Portland Cen-ter since 1998, this is the first time the pro-gram has been available in Idaho.

Offered in a cohort model over the courseof 68 weeks, the MBIS program is designedfor adult learners who need to complete theircollege degree, aspire to positions in man-agement, and want to effectively use com-puters within their areas of responsibility.

Serving as advisors for the program aretechnology representatives from Preco Elec-tronics, the Idaho Department of Labor, Adec-co Technical, and Hewlett-Packard Inc.

The MBIS program is the third academicprogram offered through the Boise Center. Alsoavailable are another degree-completion pro-gram leading to a bachelor’s degree in man-agement and organizational leadership, and agraduate program that culminates in a masterof arts degree in organizational leadership.

University’s initiatives:• Reaching out to elementary and middle schools with racial-ly and ethnically diverse populations, encouraging students toconsider college — and George Fox in particular — as anoption for their future;• Participating in college andcareer fairs in racially and ethni-cally diverse areas;• Teaming up with alumni,churches, and organizations thatcan identify racially and ethni-cally diverse prospective stu-dents;• Finding ways to better use theUniversity’s financial resourcesto attract racially and ethnicallydiverse students; and• Providing college preparatoryprograms for racially and ethni-cally diverse students.

Attracting Faculty and Staff of ColorIncreasing George Fox University’s number of racially

diverse students is not just a matter of recruitment programs.“You’ve got to have people (of color) to recruit people (of

color),” says Cook. “It becomes a real challenge. We mustcreate an environment that’s welcoming.”

A key part of providing a welcoming environment is pro-viding role models who share a student’s racial or ethnic back-ground. The Blueprint addresses strategies for attracting andretaining faculty and staff of color. Recommendations include:• Providing the University’s search committees with guide-lines for achieving faculty diversity;• Making deliberate efforts to seek staff candidates from morediverse networks — such as racially diverse churches, theUrban League, the Siletz Tribe, and the Oregon Council forHispanic Advancement; and• Providing ongoing education for staff and faculty to increaseunderstanding of racial diversity issues.

Fighting to Stay IndependentIn her first year at George Fox, Lewis developed friendships

with her classmates and dorm floor mates. One of her classesbecame an informal support group, meeting frequently formeals. A friend took her home to Idaho for a holiday.

But she didn’t want to get too comfortable.“I’m very confident in who I am,” she says. “I’m not easily

influenced by peers. I wasn’t trying to fit in. I told myself, ‘I’mgoing to be me. I’m not going to be shaped. I’m going toshape.’ I had a different music style … different humor. I foughtto stay independent.”

She made an intentional effort to integrate her racial her-itage into her academic work.

“If I had to do a report,” she says. “I did it on a black per-son. I tried to bring some angle of culture into it.”

Seeing Yourself in the CurriculumPresident Brandt notes that George Fox can recruit racially

and ethnically diverse students, faculty, and staff, but the deci-sion to join the community is made by the individual, not theUniversity.

“The curriculum we have much more control over,” saysBrandt.

Brandt favors a true integration of the curriculum asopposed to an “add-a-course” approach to multiculturalism.

“We intend to engage the entire faculty in making sure thecurriculum is honest and complete,” he says. “That mayinclude offering a special course, but we don’t want to go therefirst.”

George Fox currently offers various courses on cultural andracial diversity-related topics, and is considering creating adiversity course that would be included in the general educa-tion courses required for all students.

Such efforts are important, says Martha Iancu, director ofthe English Language Institute. Students want to see them-selves in the curriculum, she says.

“How can we broaden the curriculum to make it related toNative Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, andothers?” she asks. “How can we make it related to the chal-lenges they face as a minority in a majority world?”

“You’re Different Around Your Black Friends.”In Ginean Lewis’ junior year, the number of black George

Fox students increased. Lewis said she connected immediatelywith five of the women.

“Those girls became my family. I had holidays at theirhouses. I ate like I did at home.”

Lewis said she was able to be herself with her new friends.“When I went to Idaho (to her white friend’s home) for the

holidays, they didn’t see all of me.Our holidays and family gather-ings are very different: what wewatch (on television), what weeat.”

Her old friends noticed achange. Her roommate told her shewas different when she was withher black friends.

“I told her, ‘It’s a side youhaven’t been privileged to see.’”

TeachingUnderstanding

Those who have been at GeorgeFox for several years say the com-

munity is becoming more understanding of diverse cultures.“I got a lot of ignorant questions then,” says Lewis. “I don’t

think they’re being asked now.”As director of multicultural services, Dixon and a part-time

multicultural advisor work to support racially and ethnicallydiverse students and build understanding of diversity issuesamong students, faculty, and staff.

During their orientation — which bore the theme “Createdfor Community, Designed with Diversity” — all freshmenread The Color of Water, the autobiography of biracial authorJames McBride.

“This year, freshmen are ready to talk about the issues,”says Dixon. “I’m encouraged by the conversations I’m having.We’ve got some high-quality students of color in this freshmanclass. The key is keeping them. We’ve got some work to do.”

Part of the work will be done by the numerous organiza-tions and events sponsored on campus to encourage cross-cul-tural understanding. Seminars, workshops, lectures, and pre-sentations are held throughout the year.

Special emphasis is given during the campus’s multicultur-al week and the Northwest Racial Reconciliation Conference.An African-American alumni group provides support to anewly created African-American student group. A multicultur-al student club also holds events.

“I’m impressed by what we are doing,” says Dixon, “but Idon’t have a false vision of what we’re going to be. It’s notgoing to be like Southern California.”

Lewis says it must be a community-wide effort.“I can’t do it,” she says. “Daryl Dixon can’t do it. The peo-

ple who are white can’t do it.“It has to be a heart passion from the president to the librar-

ian to the coaches to the staff. It’s different now. More peopleare willing to make a stand. More people are willing to carrythat torch.”

Asecondary education major that can be com-pleted in four years is a thing of the past at

George Fox University — and most other privateand public colleges and universities in Oregon.

“The trend is that, for secondary education, morepeople are doing an undergraduate major in theircontent area, and then a fifth year that is almostentirely teacher preparation,” says Linda Samek,deputy director for the state Teacher Standards andPractices Commission.

That’s true at George Fox as well, where begin-ning this past fall, students planning to teach at thehigh school level now must earn a bachelor’sdegree in a nonteaching major, such as biology orhistory, and then continue on to receive a master ofarts in teaching.

Samek, a former George Fox faculty member,says the fifth-year route “is not yet the rule here inOregon, but it is a trend. And the rest of the nationis way behind us.”

The trend can be traced back to the 1980s, whena landmark federal report on education titled “ANation at Risk” was issued. That was followed by asimilar report recommending teacher preparationbecome a five-year enterprise.

In response, Oregon legislative leaders beganlobbying for fifth-year programs. They also passeda state law that requires all teachers — whether ele-

“So it is to their benefit, if they are a careerteacher, to get it done on the ‘front end,’” says ScotHeadley, GFU’s associate professor of education.

In recent years, George Fox experienced adecrease in the number of students enrolled in itssecondary education major, which required eachstudent to declare a specific academic area as ateaching specialty. The result, Headley said, was a“super major,” requiring 30 hours of content in aparticular discipline and 30 additional hours inteacher education itself.

Part of the frustration facing students, he says,was that their academic advisors were telling them30 hours wasn’t enough preparation in their chosensecondary-level teaching discipline — but to gobeyond that was to invite academic overloadbecause of the other demands of the teacher educa-tion program.

“In the last couple of years,” Headley says, “wein the teacher education program realized studentswere being correctly advised, but that we were inthe minority of schools still trying to prepare teach-ers in a four-year program.”

By that time, George Fox offered a well-estab-lished master of arts in teaching degree, so it madesense to focus students’ attention on that program.

When Matt Gerber went to theMiddle East this past fall, heknew he would be an ambas-

sador, of sorts, to people who might havequestions about his homeland.

What he couldn’t have predicted wasthat within weeks, events back home inAmerica would make that role all themore timely.

“As far as residents here in Cairo,Egypt, are concerned, I am a novelty: anAmerican Christian living in the heart ofa staunchly Islamic state,” the GeorgeFox University junior wrote in an opin-ion piece featured in The Oregoniannewspaper Oct. 22.

An international business major fromLa Grande, Ore., Gerber was one of fourGeorge Fox students who spent the fallexploring the Middle East in a Cairo-based program of the Council for Christ-ian Colleges and Universities. The pro-gram aims to help students better relateto Islamic culture — and also to betterunderstand their own place in a troubledworld.

Never have those objectives beenmore relevant. When the Sept. 11 attacks

on New York and Washington, D.C.,started America’s war on terrorism, theprogram became all the more significantfor Gerber and the other Americans.

In his commentary, Gerber wrote thathe was “confronted daily with a bitter-sweet contrast of warmth toward me per-sonally and animosity toward my coun-try.” In taxis, cafes, and on the street, hewas constantly asked for a rationalebehind the actions of the U.S. govern-ment. He told how a restaurant managerin Cairo, with tears in his eyes, had askedhow Gerber could let his nation interveneso forcefully in Mideast affairs.

“I went into that restaurant looking forsome lunch and came out with a new per-spective,” Gerber wrote. “As much as Iwould prefer to distance myself from theiron fist of U.S. military action in cir-cumstances I do not condone, I must takeresponsibility for the fact that I, too, amheld accountable for the actions of mygovernment, not just politicians.”

Middle East program participantsstudy the Arabic language and attendmultidisciplinary seminars about theregion’s culture, history, politics, eco-nomics, and religion. In the fall of 2001,

the students traveled extensively withinEgypt and the Sinai Peninsula, as well asthrough Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Syria,and Turkey.

“The point that troubled me most wasthe extreme degree of poverty I wit-nessed,” said Gerber. “Mother Theresadrew the world’s attentions to the sickand famished of Calcutta (India), butthere are many living in similar condi-tions just outside of Cairo. I was dis-turbed, and often wrestled with the reali-ty of God’s grace in the lives of thesepeople.”

In his commentary, Gerber cited edu-cation as an important part of promotinginternational peace and understanding.“Increasing our knowledge of foreignaffairs, and asking critical questionsabout personal and national roles, partic-ularly in this time of conflict, is part ofthe only possible solution to ebb the tideof increasing hostility between regionsand peoples of the world,” he wrote.

The academic portion of last fall’sstudy program was altered after Sept. 11by the cancellation of a two-week studytour in Israel. According to Gerber, thishad less to do with the level of violence

in Israel at the time, than as a response toconcern from parents back home abouttheir sons or daughters being in thatregion at all. Whatever form they take,Gerber sees great value in overseas studyprograms.

“I feel George Fox University wouldbe doing a great justice to its students torequire a semester of cross-culturallearning of all undergraduates,” he said.

Hoping to someday work in medicalmissions as a surgeon, Gerber greatlyenjoyed shadowing an accomplishedphysician in Cairo. His future plansmight also include graduate studies inlinguistics or a return to the MiddleEast.

“The greatest thing I am taking awayfrom this semester in the Middle East isthe understanding that it is not necessaryto disprove the faith of others in order tovalidate my own beliefs,” said Gerber. “Imay not agree with the institution ofIslam, but that in no way gives me theright to judge Muslims, nor love themany less.”

Psychologyprofessor returnsfrom Russia asFulbright Scholar

George Fox University is lending its fac-ulty to the world — benefiting the host

nations, and at the same time impacting theUniversity.

With the return home of GFU’s third Ful-bright scholar, academic vice president RobinBaker says the benefits run both ways:“We’re lending them our professors, but ourfaculty are also coming back with importantexperiences that should impact the way theyteach and talk about issues.”

His assessment follows the return to New-berg of associate professor of psychologyChris Koch, who spent three months this fallin Russia — briefly experiencing mediaexposure there as a representative of theUnited States.

Soon after Sept. 11, Koch was interviewedby Russian television for his perspectives, asan American, on the terrorist attack on theUnited States. “I found myself in a rolealmost like an ambassador,” says Koch.

Koch was in the Siberian city of Omsk,where he spent time at Omsk State Peda-gogical University, Omsk State Medical Acad-emy, and Omsk College. He worked on eightresearch projects focusing on cross-culturalexaminations of attention, on nonverbal intel-ligence, and on problem solving.

“The Fulbright gives you the ability to takeon multiple perspectives,” says Koch. “Itimmerses you in another culture and anotherway of thinking, and a new understanding ofhow you approach problems.”

Koch follows Sharon Linzey, professor ofsociology, as a Fulbright professor. Linzeywas in China during the last school year. Shetaught at Renmin University in Beijing, China.Before joining the George Fox faculty, shehad taught in both Russia and Japan throughFulbright programs.

George Fox’s first Fulbright scholar wasMartha Iancu, associate professor of Englishas a second language. She spent 1992-93 inGalati, Romania, where she had earlierreceived two other Fulbright grants whileteaching at other institutions.

It’s not necessarily unusual for a smalluniversity to have Fulbright scholars back-to-back, say Fulbright officials, “But having aFulbright scholar at all testifies to the excel-lence of the individual faculty selected,” saysJudy Pehrson of the Fulbright office in Wash-ington, D.C.

The Fulbright program is named after itscreator, the late Sen. J. William Fulbright ofArkansas, who saw educational exchange asa way to promote mutual understandingbetween Americans and people of othernations. Fulbright grants are made by theU.S. State Department for a variety of educa-tional activities. The Fulbright Scholar Pro-gram sends 800 scholars and professionalsworldwide each year to lecture or conductresearch.

Bill Essig is a versatile man whomoves from college classroom torelief agency office to refugee

camps in Central Asia.But each job — assistant professor in

George Fox University’s business depart-ment and vice president of internationalprograms for Tigard-based NorthwestMedical Teams — brings somethingimportant to the other, Essig said.

Teaching forces him to examine howhe does his work, and international aidgives him opportunities to improve thelives of others as he hones the skills heteaches, the West Linn resident said.

He finished the academic term at theuniversity’s Tigard campus early thismonth while preparing for his second tripin a month to Central Asia to aid Afghanrefugees whose bleak living conditionsare made worse by the current conflict.

He left Sunday for Uzbekistan tocoordinate work with other agenciesassisting people hit by four years ofdrought and more then 20 years of war inAfghanistan.

He also hopes to connect with threeNorthwest Medical Team volunteersscheduled to depart on Friday for Tajik-istan. The group will travel intoAfghanistan to work with refugees, hesaid, and other teams will follow throughthe winter.

Essig, who was raised in Berea, Ohio,south of Cleveland, has been on the movesince 1972, when he graduated fromMiami University in Oxford, Ohio. Hetook off for Morocco, worked for a whilein Switzerland, then traveled throughEurope, the Middle East and into India,where his life was profoundly changed.

As did other young people in the1970s, he went to India, Essig said, “witha sense of adventure and a drive to searchout the deeper meaning of life.”

He met a couple of gurus and evenhung out with a few Rajneeshees. Hesought help at a clinic operated by a Nor-wegian medical missionary. While hisfoot healed, he had long discussions withthe missionary and began reading theBible, Essig said.

“I had a transforming experience, “ he

said. “I became a Christian.”At the same time, Essig was disturbed

by the differences between the haves andhave-nots he had seen in his travels.

“I decided I wanted to address someof the needs that I saw all around me,” hesaid.

He found the moral imperative torespond to people in need through Jesus’words in the Gospel of John’s 10th chap-ter: “I came that they may have life, andhave it abundantly.”

That isn’t a promise for the hereafter,Essig said, but one for today in which“people are enabled to take greater con-trol over their lives, their futures, andtheir environments.”

For five years, he worked with theTravelers Open Door agency, coordinat-ing teams operating social welfare andrehabilitation programs in India,Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt andGreece.

On to BangkokHe moved in 1980 to Bangkok, Thai-

land, and started medical and redevelop-ment programs for Southeast Asianrefugees with Seattle-based World Con-cern. Four years later, he became WorldConcern’s director for West Africa andKenya.

He was vice president for internation-al programs with Portland-based MercyCorps International from 1988 to 1995,adding Eastern Europe and CentralAmerica to the list of regions where he’sworked.

By the mid-’90s, Essig and his wife,Laurie, a Southern California native hemet in Sri Lanka, had three growingsons, each born in a different continent.He began thinking about taking a breakfrom relief work.

Esssig had received a master’s degreein public administration from HarvardUniversity in 1988 and thought he mightteach someday. The opportunity arrivedin 1995 when he met Tom Head, thenchairman of George Fox’s business andeconomics department.

“As I got to know him and his back-ground and his capacity as a manager, Ifelt he could contribute to the program atGeorge Fox,” Head said.

Many students at the Quaker-foundeduniversity are interested in overseaswork, Head said, and in the managementstyles Essig explores.

He has developed agraduate businesscourse, “Leadershipand the Human Side ofEnterprise,” in whichhe emphasizes the ser-vant leadership modelhe believes Jesus out-lined in Matthew,Chapter 23: “Thegreatest among youwill be your servant.All who exalt them-selves will be humbled,and all who humblethemselves will beexalted.”

Airlines, a successful company withegalitarian management and few laborproblems.

One of Essig’s class handouts outlinesa leader as one who fosters collaboration,strengthens others, sets an example,experiments with new processes and cel-ebrates accomplishments.

Brendon Connelly, who recently com-pleted requirements for his master’sdegree, said Essig showed students thateven when hard management decisionsmust be made, “there’s a more humaneway than the top-down, command-and-control system.”

During classroom breaks, Essig hascontinued to visit foreign fields. He wasa consultant to Mercy Corps in 1995 and1996.

World Vision, a California-basedrelief and redevelopment agency, senthim in the summer of 1997 to Azerbaijanand in the summer of 1998 to Albaniaand Kosovo.

He helped Northwest Medical Teamsreorganize its management structurefrom October 1999 to May 2000. Thenhe joined the Tigard-based agency, cut-ting back to half-time at George Fox.

“Bill is a versatile guy,” Head said.“He’s energetic. He wants to do workthat is meaningful and useful for theworld. It’s hard to hold him down.”

He is also a perfectionist who willwork too many hours if she doesn’t con-vince him to relax occasionally, said hiswife, Laurie Essig.

“Over the years, I’ve tried to slow himdown, but that’s his work ethic,” she said.

Her husband is in a volatile part of theworld for the next month, and their mid-dle son, Aric, 22, joined him to help med-ical volunteers with logistics in northernAfghanistan, Laurie Essig said.

“I learned a long time ago not to beworried,” she said. “If worse comes toworst, I’ll deal with it then.”

Meanwhile, Bill Essig planned how toget teams into Afghanistan with medicalaid, food and tents during the cold win-ter, along with how to make sure peoplein refugee camps have clean water.

“A military gain doesn’t mean the sit-uation is resolved,” he said last week.“Many thousands of people are still fac-ing a very difficult winter.”

Applications for 2002-03 awards must besent to the Office of Alumni and Parent Rela-tions by Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. Granting ofthese scholarships follows the regular appli-cation and award practices of the financialaid office. Recipients of alumni awards andscholarships will be selected by the GeorgeFox University Alumni Board ScholarshipCommittee.

Applicants must be traditional undergradu-ate students who are children, grandchildren,or great-grandchildren of George Fox Univer-sity alumni.

to Nyack College studentsduring her visit to the col-lege’s Manhattan Centerjust days after the Sept. 11terrorist attacks.

As part of a team ofmental health profession-als, she was there to pro-vide psychological firstaid to those suffering frompost-traumatic stress.Three months later, Jor-dan returned to conductfive additional days ofintensive counseling. Thattime she was accompa-nied by more than 600stuffed animals — one foreach Nyack College stu-dent — donated by stu-dents, faculty, and staff of George FoxUniversity.

“Teddy bears made sense because itwas something our school, and students,in particular, could donate that was per-sonal,” said Jordan, an associate profes-sor in GFU’s graduate department ofcounseling. “We want them to know thatthey’re not alone.”

While some may assume college-agestudents would be too old for stuffedtoys, Jordan says having a security objectsuch as a blanket or stuffed animal isespecially instrumental in the recovery ofthose who feel their security has beenjeopardized.

“We are going through a grief processin this country,” said Jordan, “becausewe thought we were safe, but we’re not.”

When the planes hit the World TradeCenter, Nyack students watched it fromthe unobstructed viewpoint of the 10th-floor windows of their building just nineblocks from Ground Zero. Moments

before the attack, they had been worship-ping in chapel.

After the bombing, hundreds of stu-dents sent in e-mails to an “I’m OK list,”sometimes relaying frightening tales ofescape or of personal loss. Not only didmany watch the attack, but many lostfriends or loved ones as well.

In the days that followed, the studentbody shrank.

“For many of them, it’s just too hardto go back,” said Jordan.

That’s why she made two trips to NewYork City, and collected the teddy bears.She knows that long-term problems canbe lessened considerably by early traumawork. Counseling, she says, can helpdeliver sufferers from chaos to a cogni-tive level in their mental recovery.

“It’s called critical incident stressdebriefing,” Jordan explained of hercounseling method. “Through systematicsteps, we’ll go back to what they saw andexperienced and were feeling at the time,

and bring them back up to the present.”The key is to get victims to acknowl-

edge the depth of their emotions, talkabout them, and learn that what they’restruggling with is normal, she said.

And after they’ve talked, there’s acuddly teddy bear to hug — a gift fromone college student to another. In a smallceremony after a Nyack College chapel,Jordan unloaded five enormous boxes ofstuffed animals that she brought. Eachstudent was invited to pick one out — forits cuteness, for its softness, for itswarmth and comfort. Attached to eachwas a note of encouragement from theperson who gave the stuffed animal, or averse of Scripture.

“I think their faith is really helpingthem,” Jordan said. “They have proven tobe incredibly resilient young people.”

Bruin fans are waiting for his-tory to be made on the New-berg campus this season.

If or when it happens, it will bemore than just George Fox history;it could be nationally newsworthy.

It’s possible that sometime dur-ing the 2001-02 men’s basketballseason, three brothers could be onthe court at the same time. There isno guarantee, of course. But Bruinbasketball boss Mark Sundquistsmiles when he says, “It could hap-pen.”

He has the rare opportunity for acollege team to field a trio of broth-ers. His options include JamesMacy, 6-0, a fifth-year senior andfour-year starter at point guard whocould join the 1,000-point clubbefore the season is over; KennyMacy, 6-3, a junior and lanky wingwho provides instant offense off thebench with his outside range; andJohn Macy, 6-3, a freshman wingwho is still finding his place in thescheme of things.

If the brothers do get into thegame at the same time, it could be afirst in college basketball. Researchby the George Fox sports informa-tion office has turned up no evi-dence of it ever happening before.

The possibility of the Culver,Ore., brothers being on the samecourt for the same team at the sametime would have been impossible ifJames had not red-shirted his firstyear at George Fox. Now that theopportunity is here, all three hope ithappens.

Kenny is the swing player in the situation. “I playedin high school with both James and John,” he says. “ButJames and John have never played together, not in orga-nized games, anyway. There are five years’ differencebetween them, and I just sort of bridged the gap.”

The boys played together at home, usually compet-ing against one another. Thanks to their dad, Richard,they played on their own court on their parents’ 1,500-acre farm just outside of Culver, population 850, abouta half-hour north of Bend.

“He loves basketball, and he asked us one day if wemight like a basketball court,” James says of his dad.“Of course, we said ‘yeah!’ so he made one!”

That was about eight years ago, and the backyardnow has a full-length, lighted basketball court. “We’dalways have friends over for a game or two when wecouldn’t get into the gym at school,” says James. “OnThursday and Sunday nights, we’d have 15 to 20 kidsover playing basketball.”

Hoops came after farm chores. “Our grandparentscame here when they first started irrigating the land andsettled into farming,” James recounts. “Before irriga-tion, you couldn’t grow much out here.” Richard Macyand his brother, Ed, run the farm. “We grow a little bitof everything — carrots, potatoes, wheat, alfalfa, hay,spices like mint and coriander. We’ve got it all. It’s anice life,” says James.

As a high school senior, James was recruited toGeorge Fox by former Bruin coach Mark Vernon toplay ball. Family ties also attracted the Macys to theNewberg campus.

The brothers’ grandfather, Dwight Macy, is a formermember of the George Fox board of trustees and a cur-rent lifetime honorary trustee. He and his wife, Marie,have been significant donors to the University. Theirson Richard Macy and other relatives attended GeorgeFox, making James, Kenny, and John the third Macygeneration associated with the University.

It wasn’t a hard decision to choose George Fox,James says. “I liked the Christian atmosphere, and itwas pretty close to home.”

It could be assumed that, with one son already play-ing for the Bruins, Richard and his wife, Terry, wouldhave pushed their other two sons toward George Fox.

The Three BearsJames, Kenny, and John Macy hope to turn Bruin ball into family fun

“Oh, no,” protests John. “They left us on our own.”“They never coerced us,” he says. “We could have

gone other places, but I’ll admit the main reason I’mhere now, besides getting an education, is to play bas-ketball alongside my brothers.”

Although close on the court, the brothers are not con-stantly together.

“We pretty much go our separate ways,” says James,who was married last August. He and his wife, Kimber-ly, a student at Western Oregon University, live inMcMinnville so they can split the driving distance to thetwo schools. They have occasionally invited Kenny andJohn to join them for a home-cooked meal, “but so far,they haven’t taken us up on it — too much going onhere on campus, I guess,” says James with a laugh.

When his college basketball days are over, Jameshopes to go into teaching, though he admits going backto the family farm is a pleasant possibility. Kenny wantsto complete an M.A.T. degree, then teach physical edu-cation and coach. John, his major undecided, thinks“business maybe, and I’d like to travel.”

“You always were the wild one!” his brothers teasehim.

John smiles. “Yeah, James has always been the qui-etest, then Kenny, and I’m the loud one. Our highschool coach, Curt Shelley, told me he thinks I’m thetotal opposite of James!”

If there is one area the three are alike, however, it isin their competitive spirit.

“None of us likes to lose,” says Kenny, “but we han-dle it a bit differently. James is the calm one; whenthings get rough, he just walks away and cools off. Johnand I fight with each other too much!”

How do those separate approaches work?“Well,” admits Kenny, “we don’t play a lot of one-

on-one any more, but James usually wins.”With John’s admission to George Fox, there are no

more Macys left on the basketball team at Culver High.After eight straight seasons with at least one Macybrother on the school team, they are missed, but not for-gotten. In fact, after James got married, John broughthim this message from their high school coach:

“Coach Shelley says to hurry up and have some kids;he needs more Macys for the basketball team!”

VolleyballRanked seventh in the Northwest Conference preseasoncoaches’ poll, the George Fox volleyball team stunned the con-ference with a 19-5 record and 11-5 league mark, finishingthird. The Bruins won seven straight to start the season, and atone point were ranked 16th in the nation. One of the Bruins’biggest conference wins came against nationally ranked PugetSound, ending the Loggers’ 26-game winning streak in confer-ence play.

Junior setter Mindi Cotner, of Keizer, Ore., was a First TeamAll-Conference selection, finishing 17th nationally in assists(11.88) and 23rd in digs (5.03). She also earned Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Second Team honors.

Junior middle blocker Shelly Schultens, of The Dalles, Ore.,was a Second Team All-Conference pick while leading the NWCand placing 21st nationally in blocks (1.53).

Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Bostic, of Spokane, Wash.,(Honorable Mention All-Conference) finished 20th in the nationin digs (5.12), a figure that both led the conference and set anew George Fox single-season record.

As a team, George Fox was ninth nationally in digs (24.34),20th in assists (13.36), and 22nd in digs (14.85).

Bruin coach Steve Grant completed his 22nd season with arecord of 450-271 (.624). He entered the season with the 16th-most wins among active NCAA Division III coaches (431).

Men’s SoccerLed by the highest-scoring offense in the Northwest Confer-ence, the George Fox men’s soccer team foiled preseasonprognosticators who tabbed the Bruins for a seventh-place fin-ish in the conference. With a 10-7-1 overall record and a 9-5league mark, the Bruins finished second. George Fox led theNWC in goals (44), assists (39), and total points (127), with aseason-high 13 goals in a 13-2 win over Walla Walla College.

The Bruins had two individual conference leaders in seniorsMerrick Brownlee, a midfielder from Eugene, Ore., and forwardBryan Erickson, from Chehalis, Wash. Brownlee led the NWC inassists (13), setting a new George Fox single-season record inthe process, and total points (33). Erickson was the conferenceleader in goals per game (0.61), while scoring 11 goals total.Both were named First Team All-Conference.

Bruin coach Manfred Tschan completed his 13th season atGeorge Fox with a 160-90-10 record (.615), and his 19th sea-son overall as a head coach with a mark of 224-119-19 (.645).

Women’s SoccerA season that began with a promising 3-0 start concludedin disappointment for the George Fox women’s soccer team.Injuries struck several key offensive players, resulting in 11straight losses to end the season and a final record of 4-14.The Bruins finished eighth in the Northwest Conference with a1-13 record.

Sophomore forward Sara Oates, of Grover Beach, Calif.,despite struggling with a pulled muscle most of the season, ledthe team in scoring with 12 points (3 goals, 6 assists).

The Bruins were strong on defense, with defender BethLiljenberg, a senior from Portland, Ore., and goalkeeper CoriWulf, a junior from Salem, Ore., earning All-Conference recog-nition. Liljenberg, who started 74 of 76 games in her career,was Second Team, while Wulf, who led the NWC in saves (184),was Honorable Mention.

Byron Shenk, the only coach in the 11-year history of theGeorge Fox women’s program, announced his resignation atthe end of the season to devote more time to his duties aschair of the Department of Health and Human Performance andas an assistant athletic trainer. He ended his coaching careerwith a 96-81-11 (.523) record at George Fox, and a 200-200-37 (.500) record in 32 years total.

Cross CountryWith the smallest and least-experienced squads in his 15years at George Fox, Bruin coach Wes Cook knew the 2001season would be more of a learning experience for his men’sand women’s cross country teams. Several members of bothteams set personal records during the season.

The annual Bear Fete/Bru-Running Homecoming affair, usu-ally a season highlight, was cancelled when Cook was hospital-ized for a few days with an irregular heartbeat and high bloodpressure, but many of his former athletes returned anyway andcelebrated with a cookout in the coach’s back yard.

In the Northwest Conference, George Fox placed seventh inthe women’s race and eighth in the men’s. In the NCAA DivisionIII West Regionals, the Bruins sent their top four women and topthree men as independent runners. Senior Kirsten Norgaard, ofEverett, Wash., finished 32nd, and sophomore Beth Moyer, ofCamarillo, Calif., finished 33rd, both earning All-Region honors.
