Vol.16 No.1 January 2018

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you are all looking forward to another fantastic year with your Porsche. On behalf of my fellow Board members, we wish you all the best and hope to see you at our events throughout the year.

The December elections are behind us and the 2018 Board is in place and ready for action. We are fortunate to have seasoned veterans and some fresh new faces on the Board this year. I know we are all committed to serving the Club and its members to our fullest extent.

We commend the Nominating Committee (Ken Hold, Ed Steverson and Jamie Donaldson) for getting our slate of candidates in place and we thank Ed and Jim Brandon for their work in preparing ballots and tallying the results.

Ken, as you all know, is Porsche through and through. He has devoted a lot of his time and energy to the Bluegrass Region (and to National endeavors) and steps down after three years as Club President. Week in and week out Ken is always there for the Club. You wake up in the morning and you see he’s been busy sending e-mails about all the upcoming car events. Or else he is on the phone to a prospect or a new member with a hearty welcome and a trove of information. At Cars ‘n Coffee events Ken is always connecting folks and building a sense of community. Chances are Ken is the first person to greet you at a Cars ‘n Coffee, and chances are he’s one of the last to leave. Ken, as they say, is the glue that holds it all together.

I know I have some big shoes to fill this year stepping in after Ken, and I will try my best. Fortunately for me and for all of you, Ken stays on with us as Past President, to continue providing guidance and mentoring. Please take a moment the next time you see Ken and thank him for all he’s done in service to the Bluegrass Region, the National organization and to Porsche aficionados everywhere.

December was cold and devoid of much action so let’s get back out there and rev the engines. Be sure to check the calendar of events and make plans to attend the Porsche Cars ‘n Coffee on Saturday, January 13 at Cosi (9-11 am) and the Bluegrass Region’s Annual Holiday Party on Saturday, January 20 at Cherry Blossom Country Club (5:30 pm with dinner following). Details can be found on our website or in the Rumble.

Drive. Just Drive.

Test Drive: Trying to add new members to the list of Porsche Owners, and PCA

The PCA has a program for “prospective” Porsche owners…it is called “PCA Test Drive”. Joining PCA Test Drive allows the participant to receive Panorama, contact sellers in The Mart, and ask questions on Tech Q&A. PCA Test Drive participants are not technically PCA members as club by-laws require all members own a Porsche. Since they are not officially members, they do not receive membership cards and are not officially assigned to a region. Region leaders receive an automated email alerting them that a PCA Test Drive participant has signed up in their area and providing the participant’s contact info. The goal of the Test Drive program is to help convert those prospective owners into members when they make their vehicle purchase, so having region leaders connect with the participant could be a way to foster membership growth. We currently have (3) Test Drive members in the Bluegrass: • Kent Kalb of Flemingsburg • Anne Gresham of Paris • Keith Libert of Lexington We invite and welcome Test Drive participants at our events. If you know someone who is contemplating buying a Porsche, please encourage them to sign up for Test Drive at https://www.pca.org/pca-test-drive The fee to participate in Test Drive is $40 for the 6-month subscription. If the participant subscribes to Test Drive then purchases a Porsche later that same month and joins PCA as a primary member, the National Office will refund the $40 Test Drive fee. Past the first month, the $40 is non-refundable and cannot be applied toward primary membership ($46/year). As Eddie would say…drive it…

What’s going on in the club? How do I change my oil? Who are the officers and how do I contact them? Where can I see photos of the latest events? What does it takes to get my Porsche on the track? I wonder if anyone in our club has a Bosch hammer?

All of those questions can be answered in one of the club social media sites or communication channels listed below.

We had several BGS members attend the December 2 Lexington KY Cars & Coffee.  This was the second of the four Winter LKCC gatherings.  We met at Lexington Distillery District in the large parking lot in front of the Barrel House Distillery.  The day was super with over 220 vehicles of all sorts present.  In addition to the great parking lot car attractions, several of us did a Barrel House Distillery tour (including tasting!!).  After the gathering we had a very enjoyable lunch at Good Fellas.  Many thanks to the Barrel House Distilling Co. and the Break Room for opening early for our folks.  Also, a special thanks to the folks at Wildcat Moving & Storage, especially Raleigh Brunner and Chelsea Timm for providing coffee and donuts for us. The next gathering for LKCC will be on February 3 at the Fleetwood Auto Collection on Delaware St. in Lexington.  If you want to stay informed about future events you can either check out the LKCC facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/552518274907830/ or join the email distribution list by sending me an email at [email protected].

PORSCHE C&C December 9

Photos by Ken Hold and Patrick Meyer

It was definitely cool morning for our Porsche Cars & Coffee on December 9. We met at the Cosi Restaurant in Hamburg Shopping Plaza. The day was clear with parking lot temperature in the 30’s. Despite the cool outside we had twelve attendees in eight Porsches. Nice distribution of models with three Boxsters, three 911’s, a 944 and a 914. How neat!! Two

of the attendees were guests and we hope to see more of them at future events. Very fun informal breakfast and lots of Porsche talk. All of it true! Come to one of these breakfasts soon. You will enjoy.

Thanks to all who emailed or went online (or both), to fill out our November track events survey! There were 37 total responses with lots of good experience, great ideas and enthusiasm.

As you will see, there is interest in a variety of track events, with Driver Education (DE) being the most popular. As expected, the 911 was the most popular Porsche for driving at a track event, with the 944 and Cayman tied for second.

The responses are being used to develop a 2018 track events program, so stay tuned for an exciting 2018!

Bluegrass Racer

– An interview with Jim Campbell on the Peachstate PCA DE at Road Atlanta and the Atlanta Porsche Experience Center

Jim Campbell & Hal Lattimore (Instructor) at Road Atlanta, in front of Jim’s 2014 911 S Cabriolet

D: Did you enjoy your Drivers Education (DE) event at Road Atlanta?

J: Yes, both were fantastic. I really got to know my 911’s cornering limits & braking ability, and my instructor really helped me improve as a driver.

D: What surprised you? J: Three things; My 911 can take a right-hand corner at 60 MPH, the PDK

transmission really excels when you drive the car harder, and there are significant elevation changes and blind corners at Road America.

D: How did this adventure get started? J: My college roommate Hal, an Atlanta Porsche Experience Center (PEC) instructor and 944 SP3 PCA Club racer, persuaded me to drive my 911 with him on a race track, and visit him at the PEC.

Bluegrass PCA Track Chair David Clardy sat down with Jim Campbell to discuss his recent experience at the Peachstate PCA Drivers Education event at Road America, Oct. 14-15 and the Porsche Experience Center (PEC) in Atlanta. This is the first in a series of articles about track-related activities. Look for more articles and a 2018 calendar of track activities in the coming months.

Jim’s 911 S & Hal’s 944 Turbo SP3 Club Racer

D: How did you get there? J: I drove my 2014 911 S Cabriolet down to Atlanta, then drove approximately 140 laps around Road Atlanta, and then I drove it back home. I did note that mpg was greatly reduced on the track (4 mpg, LOL) versus the highway (28 mpg).

D: Were you worried about damaging your 911 on the track?

J: I was, but on the advice of my friend and instructor Jim, I purchased track day insurance for roughly $250. I thankfully did not need it, which is how most track day insurance turns out.

D: How did you like Road Atlanta? J: It was challenging. There are elevation changes and blind corners. You also really need to brake in a straight line for Turn 12.

Turn 12, leading onto the front straight, at Road Atlanta

D: How did you like the Atlanta Porsche Experience Center (PEC)?

J: It was great. It’s a great place to try a higher horsepower car like a 911 Turbo, a mid-engine car like a Cayman, or rear-engine car like the 911. They also have a wonderful restoration garage, museum and restaurant. Make sure you have a reservation, as it’s a restricted area due to the airport. Authors Note: The PEC also has driving simulators where you can race friends side-by-side; rain, snow or sun.

D: Did your DE include classroom and in-car driving instruction? Did your instructor ride with you?

J: Yes, there was classroom instruction and four driving sessions each day. My instructor Hal did ride with me, which was very helpful.

D: How did your PCA DE event at Road Atlanta differ from a racing-oriented event?

J: This event was about driver education and not about racing. The instructors stressed how to pass safely and how to be passed safely.

D: What was your favorite part of the event? J: Sunday at the track. After a night’s sleep, you really ‘got it’. I was enjoying the car; I knew the track, I knew my car’s limits, PDK was shifting well and my braking was much better.

D. How do you feel about your Porsche after the event?

J: It’s an amazing all-around sport car. Fast and reliable on the racetrack, and comfortable on the highway and around town.

D: Any advice to those considering events like this in the future?

J: Yes, try it! Both Road Atlanta and the Porsche Experience Center are great fun.

Vol.16 No.1 January 2018

It’s hard to believe that my first year as Zone Rep has passed. It was great fun traveling around the Zone and getting to meet so many friendly and passionate members. I welcome 2018 and all the new experiences the year will bring.

I cannot begin to look forward to the New Year without thanking the Presidents who give some much of their time with the goal of making their Regions successful. Four of those Presidents have completed their terms and will be moving into their roles as Past Presidents. Please help me in thanking them for their continued commitment to their regions. They are Ken Hold, from Bluegrass, Chuck LaMantia from Chicago, Brendon Schellpfeffer, from Central Wisconsin, and Scott Klueh from Southern Indian Region. Thank you for your continued support of your regions and the dedication you showed to your members. I am sure you will continue to be valuable assets to your replacements and your region!

With that said, please help me welcome the new presidents! They are Patrick Meyer from Bluegrass, Neil MacDonald from Chicago, Charles Holstein from Central Wisconsin and Jeff Jackson from Southern Indiana. Thank you gentlemen for stepping up to take the helm of your regions. We all look forward to working with you to continue to build your regions and to make membership in your regions a rewarding experience for all.

I am happy to report that the membership numbers continued on a positive path over the past year. The Zone added 226 Primary Members and 86 Co-Members across the 8 regions making up the Zone. This brings total membership to 3,660 Members and 2,213 Co-Members. We must continue to provide our members with great events geared toward the many different interests that the club supports.

Speaking of membership, we had three members last year reach the milestone anniversary of 50 years in the Club. They were Rod Gustafson of Chicago Region, Robert Hindman of Chicago Region and Daniel Pankratz of Fox Valley Region. This year we have three more people reaching their 50th anniversary. They are William Moses of Chicago Region, Elliot Papermaster of Milwaukee Region, and Ronald Tanton of Chicago Region. Congratulations to all!

Speaking of anniversaries, Chicago Region just completed their 60th year. The Bluegrass Region will celebrate their 15th Year and Lincoln Trail will be celebrating their 55th Birthday in 2018.

As I sit here looking outside at the snow on the ground and the thermometer showing below zero temperatures, it’s hard to think about driving events. However, it is not too early to start making plans to attend this year’s Parade. It is being held at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO. This is within a day’s drive for most of the Zone. The dates for the event are July 8th to the 14th. If you are unable to make it for the full week, then come for part of the week. Housing signup will be taking place the end of January into the beginning of February. So, it is not too early to begin to make plans for this event.

Also coming up in February is the Winter Board Meeting. The Board Meeting is being held on February 10, 2018. For those wishing to attend, it is being held at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve located at 7795 Arundel Mills Boulevard, Hanover, MD 21076.

Here’s looking forward to a Happy and Healthy New Year for all!
