- Tzippys Tidbits - Common Sleep Mistakes...-health, and sleep problems can have a serious impact on the quality of life.
From a Yiddish perspective: Like all matters of seemingly mundane life, sleep is a subject of discussion and guidance in tradition and halacha. Sleep is one of the necessary blessings of life, allowing a person to refresh ones body and spirit. Sleep deprivation causes serious pain, discomfort and great health hazards. One of the more modern methods of torture of prisoners and arrestees is sleep deprivation. The disorientation and distress that this sleep deprivation causes is usually enough to break the will and body of most human beings. Because we view the gift of sleep as Hashems blessing, there is a brochoh that precedes going to sleep for the night. The Gemarah teaches us that sleep has a minute taste of death in it and therefore one notices in infants the tendency to fight sleep. The ne-shamah, so to speak, is returned to its Creator while one sleeps and is restored to the body when one awakes in the morning. Shema is also recited before retiring, accompanied by a number of Tefillos. Thus a Yid prepares ones self for sleep by reiterating ones faith in Hashem and entrusting ones soul and life to Him while sleeping.
The Rambam in Mishna Torah, recom-mends that people should get eight hours of good sleep per night. Like many doctors, he didnt necessarily practice all the advice he gave others. The Gemarah is of the opinion that night was created for the study of Torah. As such, Torah students in yeshivas and at home traditionally keep late hours while occupied in learning Torah. Since shacharis must be recited early, it is difficult to fit in eight hours of sleep into such a schedule. In Eastern European communities, the rebbe who was suspected of not studying Torah late into the night, often was discharged from his position. Sleep, or certainly a great deal of sleep, was thus transformed from a necessity into something akin to a luxury. The great men of the Mussar movement taught their disciples that there would be plenty of time for sleep in the grave. The Gaon of Vilna, for
most of his life slept only two out of twenty four hours and then only in four thirty minute intervals! The Gemarah records that this was also the sleep pattern of Dovid Hamelech, whose magic harp awoke him to continue his efforts to serve Hashem and Israel. Jewish tradition valued sleep, but it valued holy deeds and Torah study even more.
Shabbos was given the blessing of being the day of rest and leisure. As such, sleeping on Shabbos afternoon has become a time-honored Jewish custom. Even those of us who never sleep during the day during the week are loath to forego the pleasure of a Shabbos afternoon nap. The Yidden lovingly attributed an acronym to the letters of Shabbos - sheina bShabbos taanug - sleep on Shabbos is a special pleasure. But, there are times when staying awake become a special pleasure. On the night of Shavuos, the custom is to stay awake all night and study Torah. There is also a custom to stay awake and learn and daven on the night of Hoshana Rabah and in many Jewish communities the night of Yom Kippur was also spent in meditation and davening rather than in sleep. However, the rabbis warned that if one would not be able to daven effectively during the day if one stayed up all night, one should preferably go to sleep and thus be able to daven properly. Even though sleep is a personal matter, Jewish tradition and halacha have important things to say about it.
You cant sleep? A sleep study, called a polysomnogram, is a painless overnight test to monitor sleep patterns, breathing and other functions. This common test is typically performed overnight in a hospital or in the patients home. Results are available quickly.
Sleep is such an important part of your overall health that no amount of healthful food and exercise can counteract the ill effects of poor sleeping habits. Researchers have linked poor sleep to a number of health ailments, from short-term memory loss and

behavioral problems, to weight gain and diabetes, for example.
There are many reasons for not getting a good nights sleep. Unfortunately, most people tend to reach for a sleeping pill instead of doing the work to figure out whats got them tossing and turning.
For your information, let us list some facts: Americans are drugging themselves to sleep more than ever, says a five-year government study, the first ever to track use of sleeping pills in the U.S.
About 8.6 million Americans take prescription drugs like Lunesta and Am-bien to get to sleep-about 4 percent of the adult popula-tion over 20.
Thats in addition to a Thomson Reuters study that found sleeping prescriptions had tripled among people under 45. The new study found that drug use started increasing with age, with people in their 40s and 50s more likely to start medicating to get sleep.
Here are five common sleep mis-takes you can address without drugs.
1. Using the snooze button. While a few minutes more in bed may be tempting, using the snooze button could backfire as interrupted sleep can increase your fatigue. Its best to just get up on the first alarm
2. Irregular sleep schedule. A regular
routine of going to bed and getting up around the same time each day will help promote bet-ter sleep, while constantly interrupting your schedule around can easily lead to insomnia and fatigue
3. Taking long naps during the day
4. Eating sugar before bedtime. Sugar alters the chemical balance in your body, which can contribute to impaired sleep
5. Drinking coffee or caffeinated beverages too late in the day
Under-standing Why and How Insomnia Occurs
A new book was inspired by an authors own troubles getting
proper shut-eye. Since writing the book, hes been
diagnosed with non-REM arousal parasomnia, a sleep disorder that can cause night terrors and sleepwalking.
Fortunately, sleep disorders such as sleepwalking and night terrors are not the primary reasons for impaired sleep. The vast majority of people who have trouble sleeping suffer with insomnia; the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. And while many complain their insomnia appears impossible to cure, there is hope...
In order to understand why you cant sleep, you need to understand that sleep is an outcome of two types of variables:

avoid all sugar and processed foods, eat loads of fermented veggies, have an ideal body fat and work out regularly with a fitness regimen, but if you fail to sleep well regularly, for whatever reason, it is virtually impossible to be optimally healthy. Interrupted or impaired sleep can cause a ripple-effect capable of wreaking all sorts of havoc in your body and health.
The Link between Sleep and Mi-graines
Migraines and sleep appear to have a distinct, albeit complicated relationship. Both too little and too much sleep can trigger a migraine attack. On the downside, the mecha-nisms involved are still unknown. On the upside, there are ways to ease both problems, and addressing your sleep habits is key.
An MD and headache specialist in North Carolina offers the following four recommen-dations specifically to those with migraines:
Change your thinking. Some people whose migraines strike at night become afraid to go to sleep. If worrying about your mi-graines is keeping you from resting, consider talking to a counselor who works with people with chronic pain.
Comfort yourself. When you have a migraine, some people find that placing cold packs on their head helps them sleep, while others prefer a warm pack. Try each to see which kind helps you more.
Take a two-pronged approach. After taking medication to stop a migraine, lie down in a dark, cool, quiet room. As youre sleeping, the medicine can go to work so you wake up feeling better.
Review your medications. Ask your doctor if any medicines youre taking includ-ing migraine drugs can wake you up or make your sleep less restful. If so, taking them in the morning may help limit their effect on your sleep.
1. Sleepiness Under normal conditions, your sleepiness should
increase throughout the day, peaking just before you go to bed at night. This is ideal, as you want your sleep to be high at the begin-ning of the night.
Making sure youre exposed to bright sunlight, and high-quality lighting during the day, followed by decreased light exposure once the sun sets, will help maximize your natural sleep cycle so that youre appropri-ately sleepy at the end of the evening.
2. Noise Noise occurs in three zones: the mind level, body level, and the environmental level. If the noise is conceptu-ally greater than your level of sleepiness, you will not fall asleep.
The most common type of mind noise is called cognitive popcorn, or unstoppable thoughts running through your mind at night. Examples of body noise include pain, discom-fort, indigestion, side effects from prescription drugs, or residual caffeine from drinking coffee too late in the day. Environmental noise is usually obvious, such as noises in your room or house, a snoring partner, music, lights, or being too hot.
In order to get a good nights sleep, you want:
sleepiness level to be high, and
the noise level to be low
More often than not, the reason why you cant fall asleep is NOT because youre not sleepy enough, but rather because youre subjected to excessive noise, which, again, can be either mind/body/environmental-type noise, or a combination thereof.
For Optimal Health You Need Proper Sleep

Strolling between the quaint displays Passepartout happened upon a Jewish ped-dler. His stomach being quite empty owing to his wanderings he approached the simply attired man inquiring whether there was anything kosher to eat in the area. Passep-artout wasnt a Jew on any account, but an acquaintance of his opened his eyes to culi-nary preferences. Back in England which seemed like ages ago, he was queried by a friend, Do you know why movie detectives enlist the use of the phrase This doesnt smell kosher when circumstances or things seem misaligned or out of kilter?
Actually detectives in the movies and also in real life do so because kosher stands for quality, purity, wholesomeness and truth. It really means fit for use. Fitnessphysical and spiritualis a matter of making the right
choices, and leading a proper life. If you wish to count yourself among the millions who are now into fitness of mind and body, try to eat Kosher.
Im Benjamin. Want to taste a kosher bagel? The peddler graciously smiled and handed him a poppy seed bagel that Passep-artout wolfed down on the spot.
Kosher bagel? I was under the impres-sion that only fish and meat must be kosher.
In a way youre right, but we Jews have many more dietary laws we must ad-here to. Benjamin explained.
The Jewish Bible prohibits any cook-ing and consuming meat products together with any dairy product - and yes, even this simple bagel must be kosher. Let alone the ingredients it contains, but a piece of dough called

challah must be separated from the dough prior to it being
fit to be eaten
Originally, that dough was given to a priest - kohen, a descendant of Aaron who served in the Temple. In Messianic times, well reinstate this practice. Meanwhile, we need to burn that challah before we can eat the bread from which it was taken.
Passepartout was spellbound. But why this ancient practice nowadays?
Benjamin, happy with an attentive ear, continued his narrative.
Taking challah tells us that whatever we are given is not for our use alone. If we have wisdom, money or good health, our first step is to put them towards a G dly purpose.
Jewish women traditionally prefer baking their own challah for Shabbos over buying from a baker. Its a mitzvah, so why give it away? Its also a very feminine kind of mitzvah, nurturing the bodies and souls of the family and guests.
Benjamin, Benjamin; a lady called from the entrance of a quant shop. You havent had your lunch yet with it almost being time for dinner.
Passepartout, standing next to Benja-min, bowed slightly while greeting her with an obligatory hello. He took the liberty of asking her, Do you also separate this special dough?
Most certainly, she responded excit-edly without hesitation, and Ill explain why.
To this day I thank heaven my father ditched the cloth in exchange for family life. Even though I was raised as a staunch Catho-lic, I was always drawn to other faiths and
the varied religious ceremonies that knit the families in our community together.
While growing up, I adored baby-sitting for one local family on Friday nights more than any other.
The Sherman family had one well-be-haved son who was absolutely adorable, but of even more interest to me, the little boys parents routinely asked me to participate in their weekly Shabbat before they left for the evening.
To honor the Sabbath they would light candles and we would wash our hands. They even gave me a sip of wine before removing the cloths covering two loaves of glistening Challah bread and raising them in the air. The family would pray in Hebrew and finally wed each pull a piece of bread from the braided loaf and eat it.
As a teen I never had felt included in another familys rituals in such an open and welcoming way before participating in the Shermans evening Shabbat ritual. Savoring a chunk of bread off of a communal loaf made me feel like I was more than just a baby-sitter; for a brief moment I was a part of the fabric of their family.
It is funny how things like sharing bread before a Friday night baby-sitting gig can shape a person.
Years later I earned an A on my breads final in culinary school by making a pristine loaf of Challah and even went on to serve as a personal chef for several clients during the Jewish high holiday season. Most important-ly, challah separation is always a prerequisite prior to braiding the loaves and putting them into the oven.
Today, I make and share loaves of savory homemade Challah with my friends and family as often

as I can. We never cut it with a knife, but opt instead to share
it communally just like the Sherman family taught me all those years ago.
How did you land up in Japan? asked Passepartout, You obviously dont appear to be a native.
Not to be left out, Benjamin piped in airing out a small lesson. You may wish to know he babbled, the first confirmed contacts between the Japanese and people of Jewish ancestry began during the Age of Discovery (16th century) with the arrival of European travelers and merchants - primar-ily the Portuguese and Dutch. However it was not until 1853, with the arrival of Com-modore Matthew Perry following the Con-vention of Kanagawa ending Japans closed-door foreign policy that Jewish families began to settle in Japan. The first recorded Jewish settlers arrived at Yokohama in 1861 establishing a diverse community consist-ing of 50 families from various Western countries, as well as the building of the first synagogue in Japan.
Passepartout, having heard enough, excused himself and continued on his merry way.
He had, at least, one resource to call on the French and English consuls at Yokohama for assistance. But he shrank from telling the story of his adventures, intimately connected as it was with that of his master; and, before doing so, he determined to exhaust all other means of aid. As chance did not favor him in the European quarter, he penetrated that in-habited by the native Japanese, determined, if necessary, to push on to Yeddo.
The Japanese quarter of Yokohama is called Benten, after their so-called idol of the sea, who is worshipped on the islands round about. There Passepartout beheld beautiful fir and cedar groves, sacred gates of a singu-
lar architecture, bridges half hid in the midst of bamboos and reeds, temples shaded by immense Confucius cedar-trees, by them considered holy retreats where were sheltered Buddhist priests and sectaries of, and interminable streets, where a perfect harvest of rose-tinted and red-cheeked chil-dren, who looked as if they had been cut out of Japanese screens, and who were playing in the midst of short-legged poodles and yel-lowish cats, might have been gathered.
The streets were crowded with people. Priests were passing in processions, beat-ing their dreary tambourines; police and custom-house officers with pointed hats encrusted with lac and carrying two sabers hung to their waists; soldiers, clad in blue cotton with white stripes, and bearing guns; the Mikados guards, enveloped in silken doubles, hauberks and coats of mail; and numbers of military folk of all ranksfor the military profession is as much respected in Japan as it is despised in Chinawent hither and thither in groups and pairs. Passepartout saw, too, begging friars, long-robed pilgrims, and simple civilians, with their warped and jet-black hair, big heads, broad torso, slender legs, short stature, and complexions vary-ing from copper-color to a dead white, but never yellow, like the Chinese, from whom the Japanese widely differ. He did not fail to observe the curious equipagescar-riages and palanquins, barrows supplied with sails, and litters made of bamboo; nor the women who took little steps with their little feet, whereon they wore canvas shoes, straw sandals, and clogs of worked wood, and who displayed tight-looking eyes, teeth fashionably blackened, and gowns crossed with silken scarfs, tied in an enormous knot behind an ornament which the modern Parisian ladies seem to have borrowed from the dames of Japan. E ver heard the expres-sion, proud as a peacock? When observing this fascinating bird, one can understand how this analogy was born. Peacocks certainly seem proud
as they strut around showing of their breathtaking plumage (feathers).
Actually, the word peacock refers to the male peafowl. Female peafowl are known as a peahens. Interestingly, peahens feathers are very dull; nothing at all like the male peacocks showy display. Their young are known as peachicks. A family is known as a bevy, and a group of peafowl is called a party.

The Wonderful World of Animals - Peacocks
found in India and Sri Lan-ka. Its genus and species
name is Pavo cristatus.
Peafowl are large, pheas-ant-like birds. The peacock is mostly blue with a fan-like crest of wire-like feathers. Its long train is made up of long feathers, each of which ends in a color-ful eyespot. A male peafowl is one of the largest flying birds when the combined length of its train and its large wingspan are consid-ered. A pea-cock can have a wingspan of up to six feet! An adults train of feathers can be sixty inches long. Their lifespan in the wild is an average of 20 years. Peafowl weigh an aver-age of 9-13 pounds and their bodies are between 35-50 inches.
The peahen doesnt have a train, and has dull-brown feath-ers and a green lower neck. She lays 3-8 eggs at a time and they
take about 28 days to hatch. Their young are pale and downy with a dark brown mark on the neck. Sometimes they will climb on their mothers back and she will fly them to a safe tree branch. When peacocks
are young, they look like females, except that their wings are chestnut col-ored. Peafowl make a nest by lining a shallow scrap in the ground with leaves and sticks. Occa-sionally, nests are placed on buildings, and they have even been recorded using un-used nests of White-rumped Vultures. Talk about recy-cling!
W i l d peafowl live in open forests where the for-age for berries and grains. They will also eat snakes,
lizards and small rodents; they are therefore considered omni-vores. Peafowl make loud calls, which allow them to be detected easily. These noises in the forest are usually made

The Wonderful World of Animals - Peacocks
when predators, such as tigers, dholes and leopards, are nearby. Occasionally, owls and eagles will hunt them as well. Peafowl forage on the ground in small groups, and will usually try to escape from predators on foot through the fo-liage and avoid flying. They will, however, fly into tall trees to roost at night.
The Peacocks Feathers
P e a f o w l are best known for the males e x t r a v a g a n t display feath-ers which, de-spite actually growing from their back, are thought of as a tail. The train is in reality made up of the e n o r m o u s l y e l o n g a t e d upper tail co-verts. The tail itself is brown and short as in the peahen. Like a cupped hand behind the ear, the erect tail-fan of the male helps direct sound to the ears. The colors result not from any green or blue pigments but from the micro-structure of the feathers and the result is a shim-
mery blue-green appearance. The long train feathers of the male develop only after the sec-ond year of life. Fully developed trains are found in birds older than four years. In northern India, these begin to develop
each February and are molted (shed) at the end of August. The molt of the flight feathers may be spread out across the year. Peacocks are not killed for their feath-ers. Instead, the feathers are gathered up as the birds shed them.
P e a c o c k feathers are often used as d e c o r a t i o n s . You can buy a dozen of them in a floral or craft store and arrange them attractively in a glass vase for an easy, quick center-piece. They are also used to decorate hair
accessories, masks, jewelry and shoes.
