Schools get user-friendly loos under RUHSA ProgrammeWhen children can handle smartphones, then why not smart toilets for them? Is there away to make them feel proud to own, maintain and keep the toilet clean at their schoolsand at home? This is the basis on which the Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA),promoted the first-of-its-kind School Pride Project by launching a clean anduser-friendly toilet complex for the government school at the remote Panamadangivillage in KV Kuppam block, some 30km from Vellore, on 8th November, 2016.

Deviating from the regular design practice, this new toilet complex has been constructed close to the classrooms in order tokeep them accessible and maintained properly.Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rita Isaac, Head of RUHSA, said that Rs. 3.5 lakhs have been spent on the toilet complex, tomotivate children to enhance cleanliness. “The model facility has flushing urinals, Indian-style toilets, sufficient water, mirror, good interior, etc. We would like to promote this kind of toilets in all the schools,” she pointed, adding that it would influencepolicy decisions for all the school buildings to have such toilets. She further said, the village women self-help group would beentrusted to maintain the toilet on a regular basis and they would be provided financial assistance under the Swachh Bharatproject. This would also help develop discipline among the children to use toilets and they would be the ambassadors againstopen defecation. This is a small beginning towards making Vellore an open-defecation-free district, she added. The project was supported by Friends of Vellore, Sweden. Also speakingat the occasion, Mr. Sreedhar Balaraman, President, Rotary Club Velloreappreciated the initiative and offered to provide the school with anincinerator to dispose sanitary napkins and also be a part of the advocacygroup to promote the new model of toilets to other schools in the district.Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, who inaugurated the toilet facility, noted thatlife and nature teach people to be clean and healthy. “Cleanliness is a personal discipline which should begin at home. Toiletis only a symbol which reminds us about personal hygiene. In a way, it teaches everyone to lead a clean life,” he asserted. He urged the youngsters to take a pledge to practice living a clean life besides motivating others to follow the same. “Thisway we can achieve a clean India as envisaged by Prime Minister Modi,” he added.Talking about the sanitation issue in the village, Project director of the District Rural Development Agency, P. Periyasamypointed out, that of the 700 plus households in the village, only half of them have toilet facility. He urged the students to insistthe elders of the households to construct toilets, as the government extends financial support of Rs.12,000. He further stressed thatthe state government has set an ambitious target of constructing 15 lakh toilets this year which included 81,000 in Vellore District.
