VoLTE,anacronymfor Voice over LTE,whichisbasedonthe IPMultimediaSubsystem (IMS)network,withspecificprofiles forcontrolandmediaplanesofvoiceserviceon LTE definedby GSMA inPRDIR.92. Thisapproachresults inthevoiceservice(controlandmediaplanes) beingdeliveredasdataflowswithintheLTEdatabearer.

Thismeansthatthereisnodependency on(orultimately,requirementfor)thelegacycircuit-switchedvoicenetworktobemaintained.VoLTEhasupto3timesmorevoiceanddatacapacitythan3GUMTSandupto6timesmorethan2GGSM.Furthermore,itfreesupbandwidthbecauseVoLTE’s packets headers aresmallerthanthoseofunoptimized VoIP/LTE.

q InJune2014, KT showcased theworld’s firstcross-border roamingservices basedonVoiceoverLTE.The SouthKorean operator partneredwith ChinaMobile todevelopVoLTEroamingservices.

q InOctober2014,ChinaMobile, KPN and iBasis havesuccessfully implemented thefirstinternationalVoLTEroamingbetweenmobileoperatorsbasedonIMSlocalbreakoutarchitecturewithahomeroutingsystems.

q InNovember2014, Verizon and AT&T haveannounced thecompanies areenablingVoLTE-to-VoLTEconnections betweentheirrespectivecustomers.VoLTEinteroperabilitybetweenVerizonandAT&Tcustomersisexpectedtobeavailablein2015.Testinganddesignarebeingdonebetweenbothcompanies usingthirdpartynetworkssuch asAlcatel-Lucent.

1.SmartphonebatteryuseVoLTEclientsconsumed approximately40%lessthanOTTVoIPclients.

2.DataconnectionsOTTVoIPclientsgeneratedupto10xmoredataconnections inthemobile networkthanaVoLTEclientduringacall.

3.Datavolume/throughputMostOTTVoIPapplications requiredbetween20%and40%morethroughputthanVoLTEclientsduringactivecallstoachievethisqualitylevel,althoughoneOTTVoIPapplicationshowedexceptionalperformanceandcameclosetoVoLTE.Overalldatavolumeconsumedoveraperiodoftime,including amixofactiveandstand-byperiods, resultedinatleast50%lowerconsumption forVoLTEthanks toitsmoreefficientbehavior duringstand-by.

4.SignalingloadTypicaldefaultOTTVoIPkeep-alivepatternsactivatedduringstandbycreatedbetween100%and200%highersignalingloadonLTEnetworks comparedwithVoLTE.

5.Mouth-to-earDelayTheVoLTEclientexhibited upto94%lowermouth- to-eardelaycomparedtoOTTVoIP.

OTTVoIPvsVoLTENSNSmartLabsreportshowed clearadvantagestoVoLTEinbattery,bandwidth andsignaling consumption.

Thesetests,however,wereconductedunderidealradioconditionswithnonetworkload.TheSmartLabsteamwascuriouswhattheresultswouldbewithamorerealisticscenario.Tofindout,theteamtestedbothservicesagain–butthistimeplacedthesystemundervarious non-GuaranteedBitRate(GBR)loads, including best-effortservicessuchasfiledownloads, e-mailandInternetbrowsing,andwithpoorradioconditions.ItturnsoutthatVoLTEvoicequalityisnotaffectedatallbynon-GBRtraffic

Rather,VoLTEallowsyourenterpriseandconsumercustomerstoeasilyuse4GLTEdataservicesbymaximizingtheirtimeonLTE.ThisdifferencehelpsbusinessemployeesstayconnectedandworkatLTEspeeds. Forexample,theycankeeptheirexistinglaptoportablet,tetheritusingWiFi orBluetoothtotheirVoLTEsmartphone,andtalk&workanywhere,withouttheolddeskphone’s limitationsorongoingoperationalcosts.Consumerscanmulti-task,talkingandbrowsingsimultaneously.Asaresult,VoLTEfitsperfectlyintotoday’sdemandforfastermobilebroadband.

3.YoucanofferrichIPcommunicationsrightnow,includingvideocallingandcontentsharing.Videoprovidesengagementandimmediacy.It’saseasytouseasvoiceormessaging,soyourcustomerscanuseitforclosingsalescallwithoutthehasslesorvariableclarityofOTTvideo. Andcontentsharinghelpsyourcustomersusemedia(files,pictures,videos,location,etc.)justassimplyandbroadlyastexting. InsteadofheadingovertoemailorDropBox, simplymovethecontentwithinthecallitself,whetherit’stoyour fishingbuddyortoyourconferencecall.

4.VoLTEsetsthestagefordistinctiveappsandservices.Youcanalsodevelopafullportfolioofdifferentiatedapplicationsandservicesthatgiveyouacompetitiveedge.Forexample,multi-deviceservicesofferanattractivedifferentiator.Theymakesubscribers’IPcommunicationsaccessibleandconsistentfromanysuitabledevice,suchasatablet,evenwhentheirsmartphoneisn’twithinreach.
