Spotlight on Vision Screenings Our nurses and the local Lions Club has been busy performing vision screenings using an instrument-based method, called SPOT and with the traditional eye chart test. SPOT provides a more reliable and accurate vision test. SPOT screening is able to identify the presence of risk factors that could lead to problems with vision such as eye refractive issues, opacities and miss-alignment. School vision screenings are ongoing for the month of October. If you want your child to participate in the SPOT screening, please turn in the parent permission form as soon as possible. Middle and High schools students will be screened October 8 th through October 31 st . Northwest Students Getting Ready for SPOT What if My Child Receives a Vision Referral Letter? If your child receives a vision “referral” letter from the school nurse, it does not necessarily mean that your child has a vision problem. The “referral” letter means that your child had difficulty during the screening and needs a more thorough visual exam from an eye care professional. If you receive a referral letter, it is important that you make your child an appointment for further evaluation. It is also important that you return the referral letter to the school nurse after your child has been evaluated by an eye care professional. If you need assistance with locating an eye doctor or need help with purchasing glasses, contact your school nurse. Si desea que su hijo reciba la vacuna contra la gripe en la escuela, comuníquese con la enfermera de la escuela lo antes posible. La vacuna contra la gripe estará disponible en las escuelas a partir del 4 de noviembre.

FLU SHOTS AT SCHOOL SC DHEC will be giving flu shots on site at participating schools beginning November 4th. If you want your child to receive the flu shot at school, please go to your child’s school web site and complete the online consent form as soon as possible. The online consent form must be completed by October 22nd in order for your child to receive the flu shot at school. Contact your school nurse if you are not able to complete the consent on line or if you need more information. Specific school dates for the flu shot will be forthcoming.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated globally on

November 14 to raise awareness about both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Help us celebrate next month by knowing

your risk factors and getting tested for diabetes.
