LAC was proud and delighted to receive the
“Newsmaker of the Year” award during the annual Phalaborwa Chamber of Business awards ceremony
held on 21 November 2014.
The Chamber’s end-of-year function was a well-
organised event held at Kambaku on the edge of the Olifants river. Regrettably the weather did not play
along and a torrential downpour of rain put paid to
hours of work on decorating the outside tables. But
Phalaborwa businessmen are a hardy bunch and
before long the evening was back on course under-
cover. LAC were honoured to be recognised along with other award winners such as Patricia Chikaka
as ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and Eddie Ysselstein as
a hugely popular choice for ‘Business Person of the
Year’.
The Home Affairs office was recognised for excellent
service delivery whilst Andrew Lumbe of SANParks
received due recognition for his dedication in fighting
rhino poaching. JP van der Merwe received an
award for business growth and the SPCA for their
dedicated work for animal welfare; whilst Foskor’s Priscilla Botha was named ‘Secretary of the Year’.
We congratulate all the business people whose hard
work throughout 2014 resulted in these and the other
awards on the night, as well as all the others striving to grow our town and surrounding areas through sound
business practices. LAC looks forward to continuing to
be a leading member of Phalaborwa’s vibrant business
community in 2015 and beyond.

LAC was delighted to host its first annual Charity Golf Day at the Hans Merensky golf course on 18 October 2014. 24 teams
headed out on the course on a beautiful breezy Saturday and enjoyed a robust round of golf, characterised by good-natured
competition and much laughter.
LAC INAUGURAL CHARITY
GOLF DAY A HUGE HIT!
Short holes manned by LAC, Gasarc, NTT, FNB,
Nungu Tyres and Hitachi ensured that golfers
were refreshed throughout their round. LAC’s hole
6 was manned by a hugely enthusiastic group of
volunteers led by Operations Director Bryan Smith,
whose strategies ensured that an incredible R 4860
was raised from golfers there alone. And who knew
Henry was such an accomplished wicket keeper?

LAC: GOLFING FOR THE COMMUNITY All profits from the golf day are being
channelled into a project to benefit all five of the tribal areas surrounding Ba-Phalaborwa. Every
opportunity was taken to increase that donation during the evening prize-giving function - held at
the stunning Hat & Creek restaurant in Phalaborwa. The winning team on the day was Ilanga Con-
struction, who were able to choose from the wide array of incredible prizes donated by sponsors of
this event. Most teams collected prizes with the addition of lucky draws and novelty prizes, and MC
Dave Millar kept everyone on course. Auctions were well-supported and followed by the incredible
live band “Uncovered,” who kept some guests entertained until 2am the next morning.
MD Bill Smith presented GM Wikus Erasmus
with a set of water wings in recognition of his
‘skill’ at landing in every water obstacle on the
course! Kobus Swanepoel bagged himself 50kg
of mealie meal at auction!

LAC’s PARTNERS IN GOLF AND DEVELOPMENT
Funds raised through the Charity Golf Day were in excess of R120,000 and will be distributed evenly between an
identified project in each of the five tribal authority areas in the Ba-Phalaborwa area. This has only been possible
through the incredible generosity of over 40 companies and individuals who whole-heartedly supported this
community initiative from the outset.
LAC plans to work with its partners to make this event even bigger next year, in order to increase the charity
funds raised. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

LTI-FREE HOURS AND THE SILLY SEASON
It’s that time of year again when
thoughts inevitably turn to the festive
season, gifts and celebrations. It’s
been a long year and though we
understand the temptation to relax
a little as December arrives, it is of
course crucial that we only do this in
our free time. LAC is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
365 days a year operation - 24/7/365. And being safe
cannot take even one minute off in that time.
LAC’s unwavering safety ethos is there to ensure that
everyone on our sites can return home uninjured to their
loving family and friends each and every day. Targets
are a secondary objective, though we are perilously
close to achieving a magical three million injury-free
hours - so close that we can almost taste it with the
Christmas cake. We look forward to celebrating this
milestone with you all, but just as a stepping stone to the
next milestone, and the one after that.

Festive Celebration Donation
Management was pleased to advise all employees that they will receive a discretionary R 100 cash payment in lieu of management-organised Christmas functions. The R 100 for each employee will be collected by Supervisors and distributed on sites on 04 and 05 December 2014. It is down to each department and shift to decide whether they would like to pool their
resources and organise a site braai or get-together, o r whe th e r e ach employee would prefer to take their cash home. Either way enjoy your celebration!
