Passionate arts advocacy: the time is now

I attended Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., in March, on behalf of the National Music Council andMu Phi Epsilon. This unique annual event brings together a broad cross-section of America’s cultural andcivic organizations along with thousands of grassroots advocates from across the country. Arts Advocacy Dayhas been instrumental in advancing key legislative initiatives such as increased funding for the federalcultural agencies and enlightened tax, international, and education policies. To say the event was amazing isan understatement.

The first day offered training sessions for more than 700 arts advocates representing every state. We learnedabout current arts issues circulating on Capitol Hill and gained skills to become effective advocates forincreased arts support. On the second day, we hit the pavement! With schedules in hand, we visited as manylawmakers as possible; I personally visited the offices of four senators and five representatives. While it washard to tell if my visits had any impact, I felt empowered that I was doing something for the arts andenergized to become more active in my support of the arts, specifically music.

Why bring this up now, as we are in the final stages of our 2017 convention planning? Because convention isthe perfect opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to creating opportunities – local to global – for everyAmerican to participate in and appreciate the world of music. Come with your ideas, and together we willbecome passionate advocates for the hundreds of music organizations near and dear to our hearts. Ourpassion is what will convince legislators of the value and importance of music in our nation’s life.

Greetings, Mu Phi sisters and brothers,

The Denver and Colorado Springs Alumni chapters, Delta Rho, and all the West Central and Pacific Northwestchapters greatly look forward to sharing Colorado’s song-celebrated skies, mountains and plains with you, and tohosting our Fraternity’s 2017 Convention.

Here are some things of general interest to convention attendees:

• Denver International Airport (DIA) is way northeast of town and the hotel. There will be buses to the hotelfrom the airport and a sign-up sheet at the registration desk for return trips (see website for times and costs).If you’re arriving a few days earlier or leaving later than the Convention dates, check DIA’s website for otheroptions. Note: Uber is less pricey than taxis.

• The hotel provides a shuttle for local distances of a mile or so. Use it for nearby shopping and restaurants(Park Meadows Mall vicinity) and to get to the metro area’s new RTD light rail system (requires transfersto/from airport).

• Denver is Colorado’s state capital, its largest city, and a sports/health-oriented, tech-savvy, craft beer, artand culinary center with many state and federal government offices.

• Depending on traffic, Boulder is a 45-60 minute drive north of Denver, Colorado Springs is an hour south,and the mountains are about 30 minutes west.

• Colorado is an artistic and culture-rich state with:

• Many summer festivals/performances to enjoy, such as the Colorado Music and Aspen Music Festivals,the Central City Opera, band, symphony, choir, and other concerts at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre,Chautauqua, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Broadway shows/plays, the Larkspur RenaissanceFestival, etc.;

• Wonderful museums, the Air Force Academy, national/state parks, zoos, aquariums, botanical andsculpture gardens, historical sites, and amusement parks;

• All types and levels of sports and indoor/outdoor activities – participate or just watch!

If you’re coming before or staying after Convention, you may want to do some research online at VisitDenver.com,VisitCOS.com or Colorado.com.

Important: When adventuring a mile high, you are advised to bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, swimsuit, and lighterattire for hot weather (but remember a sweater or jacket for inside the chilly hotel). You’ll also want warmer/sturdierclothing and shoes if you plan to venture into the mountains. Because of our thinner, drier air and great scenery,always carry drinking water and a charged cell phone and/or camera, and plan to do things at a more leisurely pace.We can’t wait to see you!

In 2014, I appointed an ad hoc committee to present to us this year acompletely revised set of Bylaws and Standing Rules. They did their job,and did it magnificently! You have received this important document throughyour chapters, with ample time to review and discuss it together. It will beformally presented during a convention business session, and we hope forunanimous approval. I cannot thank our committee enough for the manyhours they spent to develop this document. They reached out to themembership for feedback, took seriously each comment they received, andmade revisions accordingly. I am so proud of Katherine Pfeiffer, JudithGoff, and committee chair Kurt-Alexander Zeller for the monumental task they completedin service to our beloved Fraternity.

The fraternity electorate has received – before the convention, for the first time – informationabout members who have agreed to be considered for office on the International ExecutiveBoard. All have been vetted by the Screening Committee and their names will be given to theNominating Committee, which is selected at the convention and sets forth thefinal slate of nominees. Take the opportunity to become acquainted withthese outstanding members prior to the convention, so your vote for the nextIEB will truly be a chapter vote.

Music and friendshipPlan to come to Denver in time to witness the Mu Phi EpsilonInternational Competition finals on Thursday afternoon. You’ll bethankful you’re not a judge, because the talent is spectacular and the decisionwill be hard! See pages 8-9 to learn about the finalists. Later in theconvention, the winner will treat us to a recital and your chapter can book afuture performance. Other members will perform throughout the conventionas music delegates. The array of workshop choices is sure to be interestingand educational, and there will be music-making opportunities for everyone.The convention schedule is posted on the Mu Phi Epsilon website. Visitoften, as new performers and presenters are still being added.

An important convention component is friendship, and you may find that unprogrammed thingsaffect you the most profoundly. That chat in the corridor with someone from across the country.That thrilling performance by a delegate who happened to sit at your table for lunch. That longtalk after midnight with other collegiates. Such unexpected, unsought moments are the ones that

linger in your memory for years, long after you have forgottenabout changes to the bylaws.

A convention is the intermingling of necessary discussionswith enriching workshops, amazing performances, renewingold acquaintances, making new friends, and enjoying everyminute. We’ll dine together, meet together, make musictogether, and share together. Come for inspiration, fellowship,and to keep up with exciting changes in the fraternity. Wehave you covered. See you in Denver!

ALUMNI CORNER

OPPORTUNITIES AT CONVENTIONIt will be so fine to have all of you at our convention inDenver! Many preparations have been made so it will bea terrific experience for everyone. In addition tomeetings, meals, performances, and training sessions,convention is a fabulous opportunity to visit andrekindle our friendships.

Our fraternity accomplishes much through the efforts ofeveryone who attends the triennial convention. Eachperson who comes to represent their chapter as a delegate,and each person who comes in support of their delegate,has a role to play. Convention is an opportunity to reviewthe way we do things as a fraternity, and this year we havethe unusual and important opportunity to discuss andratify a proposed new set of Bylaws. The Bylaws RevisionCommittee has carefully crafted the revision over the lastthree years, giving members plenty of opportunity forinput along the way.

A personal storyEach business delegate is placed on a ConventionCommittee. At my first Mu Phi Epsilon convention inJacksonville, Florida, I was asked to be on theResolutions Committee. When the committee had itsfirst meeting to discuss the resolutions that had beenput forth, I hoped I could sit at the back and just raisemy hand if the group needed consensus.

That wasn’t to be; I was asked to read resolutions, at themicrophone, on the floor of the business meeting. I haveto tell you – I was mortified! But a kind soul, NancyMurphy from the Ann Arbor Alumni chapter, said tome, “Ruth, I’ll be right behind you to support you –don’t worry.” So I did as asked, and found that not only

could I read the resolutions, but it was an opportunity tolearn a new skill. Nancy Murphy will always be myfriend and hero for the help she gave me.

I share this story so that perhaps you will find itencouraging if you have the opportunity to be on acommittee or take an unfamiliar role at the convention.If I could do it, so can you, and someone will be there tosupport you.

Parting words Serving on the 2014-2017 International Executive Boardhas been an honor. I regretfully will not be able tocontinue another term, as my health has been injeopardy since last September. I have been treated forbrain cancer in recent months, and thankfully, havedone all right. The doctors are encouraged with myprogress, but I do not know at this time what my futureholds.

I want all alumni to know that speaking to you, emailingyou, and looking at your phenomenal end-of-yearreports have given me a genuine respect for everythingyou do in your chapters to further music in yourcommunities. I leave you with this thought (knowing, ofcourse, that I am preaching to the choir):

“The arts are not just a nice thing to have or to do ifthere is free time or if one can afford it. Rather,paintings and poetry, music and fashion, design anddialogue, they all define who we are as a people andprovide an account of our history for the nextgeneration.” —Michelle Obama

Ashlee Bickley, mezzo-sopranoMezzo-soprano Ashlee Bickley (Mu Upsilon, Allied) performs andteaches various genres across the classical singing medium. Recentoperatic roles include Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Angelina/Cenerentola(La Cenerentola), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Mother (Amahl and theNight Visitors), Alma March (Little Women), Geneviève (Pelléas etMélisande), and Mother/Grandmother (Little Red Riding Hood).Operatic covers include Stéphano (Roméo et Juliette), Orlofsky (DieFledermaus), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), and Tisbe (LaCenerentola). Ashlee has appeared with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic,Ocala Symphony, Concordia Theological Seminary, Heartland Sings andBach Collegium Fort Wayne as the alto soloist in numerous works by J.S.Bach, Stravinsky’s Les Noces, Händel’s Messiah, Charpentier’s Te Deum,Vivaldi’s Gloria, and the US premieres of CPE Bach’s St. John Passionand Halévy’s Prométhée Enchaîné. An avid recitalist and new musicadvocate, Ashlee was recently the featured performer at the ManchesterUniversity New Music Festival and Rural America New Music Festivaland has performed on recital series at several churches and schools.Ashlee holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and FloridaState University and was a Resident Artist Fellow with the Atlantic MusicFestival from 2014 to 2016. She ison faculty at Trine University andIndiana University-PurdueUniversity Fort Wayne.

Chika Inoue, saxophoneChika Inoue (Omega Omega, Los Angeles Alumni) is one of the most promisingsaxophonists of her generation. She has been praised for her “beautiful tone,acute sensitivity and virtuosic technique.” She has performed with orchestras andat concert halls internationally, appearing as soloist and chamber musician andreceiving lavish admiration in the United States, Germany, Italy, China, andJapan. She is engaged in several new concerto projects in upcoming seasons.Chika regularly performs in Japan and appears at many international venues. Shehas been a featured performing artist in international festivals such as TheFaenza International Saxophone Festival in Italy and The Yamaha SaxophoneFestival in Japan. Additionally, she was recitalist and master class teacher at TheInternational Clarinet and Saxophone Music Festival in Taiyuan, China andUniversity of Arts, Berlin (UdK) in Germany. A native of Osaka, Japan, Chikaspent most of her youth in Frankfurt, Germany, and San Diego, California. Agraduate of the USC Thornton School of Music (D.M.A.), California StateUniversity, Fresno (M.A.), and UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music (B.A.), she isdedicated to sharing her knowledge with students internationally. She serves onthe faculties of the Los Angeles City College, Pierce College, and California StateUniversity, Dominguez Hills. She is a Conn-Selmer Performing Artist endorsedby Henri Selmer Paris saxophones.

Jonathan Morris, pianoJonathan Morris (Delta Rho) is completing a doctoral degree in pianoperformance at the University of Colorado-Boulder College of Music, studyingwith Andrew Cooperstock. Born in the Republic of Ireland in 1992, he wasaccepted to the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin at age sixteen. Hemoved to London in 2010 to study piano with Ronan O’Hora at the GuildhallSchool of Music and Drama, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees withclassifications of First Class Honours and Distinction, respectively. Jonathan hasreceived numerous awards in local, national, and international competitions,including CU-Boulder’s prestigious Honors Concerto Competition in February2017. At the 2016 ESB Feis Ceoil—Ireland’s leading national music festival—hewon the coveted Mabel Swainson Award, and a year earlier at the Feis he markeda win in both the Hamilton Harty Cup and Anthony Glavin Trophy. Jonathan’s2016 season included performances at the City of London Festival, Ireland’sNational Concert Hall, and the New Ross Piano Festival, where he performedsolo and played a four-hand concert with Nathalia Milstein, winner of the 2015Dublin International Piano Competition. Next year Jonathan will playProkofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 Op. 26 with the CU Symphony Orchestra.

Maria Wietrzynska, pianoPolish-born pianist Maria Wietrzynska (Delta Rho) has wontop prizes in Southern California regional pianocompetitions and the Los Angeles International LisztCompetition. She performed at the Redlands Bowl as thewinner of its 58th annual Young Artists Auditions. As awinner of the Beverly Hills National Auditions, sheperformed recitals on the Manhattan Beach “Previews”series and “Sundays at 2” series, which she subsequentlyrecorded. She has performed with a number of Southlandorchestras and with the SODRE Symphony Orchestra inMontevideo, Uruguay. Maria obtained her M.M. degree atTexas Christian University, where she studied with JohnOwings, and is currently working towards her D.M.A. at CUBoulder where she is a student of Dr. David Korevaar.

Katsuya Yuasa, clarinetA charismatic and versatile clarinetist, Katsuya Yuasa (Phi Mu, Allied) hasperformed widely in the United States as a soloist and chamber musician.Presently he is an adjunct professor at Florida A&M University; a graduateteaching assistant at Florida State University, where he is pursuing a doctoraldegree under the guidance of Jonathan Holden and Deborah Bish; and anArtist Diploma candidate at Boston Conservatory, where he studies withMichael Norsworthy. He is a founding member of Duo Esplanade (flute,clarinet). Katsuya has won prizes from many notable competitions and awards,including the ENKOR International Competition, Texas Clarinet ColloquiumYoung Artist Competition, Great Composers International Competition Series,San Diego Heritage Music Festival Director’s Award, and Arthur W. FooteAward, for which he was a finalist. As a performer, he has been featured withnumerous ensembles. His recent performances include Premiere Rhapsodie byClaude Debussy with the Rio Hondo Symphony Orchestra, Paganini inMetropolis by Frank Proto with the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, andClarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland with the Boston Conservatory Sinfonietta.Katsuya was named a Yamaha Young Performing Artist in 2014.

Mu Phi Epsilon is proud to announce the latest round ofACME honorees. We are pleased to include them amongour most accomplished members whose achievementsplace them at the acme of our profession.

Anli Lin Tong Gamma Sigma, PalosVerdes/South Bay AlumniPianoPraised by critics for her “pointedgrace” (Los Angeles Times) and“exquisite pianism” (ChineseAmerican News), pianist Anli LinTong has performed in Europe, Asia,and the United States as a concertosoloist and chamber musician. An

alumna of The Juilliard School and UCLA, Anli has heldboard positions at state and national music organizationsincluding MTNA, MTAC, and CAPMT. Anli makes aneffort to give her students support and wisdom that goesbeyond musical knowledge, such as finding opportunitiesand coaching them for performances and competitions,whether as soloists or musical collaborators. Her studentsconsistently win high praise for their playing and have wontop prizes in state and national competitions.

Joanna Medawar NachefGamma Sigma, PalosVerdes/South Bay AlumniConductor, educatorJoanna Medawar Nachef hasdistinguished herself as a conductorand educator, recognized worldwideboth for her contributions to choralmusic and for her humanity. Hailedas the first female conductor from theMiddle East, Joanna is an alumna of

USC (M.M. and D.M.A.) and Cal State University,Dominguez Hills (B.M.). She has guest conducted andtoured in the U.S. and internationally, including the BeirutChants Festival, Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, and ahistoric performance at Carnegie Hall with choirs fromLebanon and Los Angeles, and has appeared in motionpictures. Joanna is Director of Choral Activities at ElCamino College, on faculty at CSUDH and CAMS, andfounding director of the Joanna Medawar Nachef Singers.

Family tiesAll four women attribute their jazz attraction tochildhood or teen experiences. One of Sheri’s earlymemories is playing the piano with two fingers at agefive, guided by her father who taught her to play by ear.She grew up hearing jazz at home – recordings and alsolive performances when her dad, aunts, and unclesplayed together – and began piano lessons at age seven.

Kim’s story is similar; her father was a well-known jazztrumpeter in her hometown of Kansas City, so jazz waspart of her family life. She also began piano at age sevenand was improvising by her early teens. She laterstudied with renowned local jazz pianist John Elliot, andlaughs that he probably took her as a student as a favorto her father.

Taylor’s family was also active in music. She recalls thather mother had the local jazz radio station on every night,which developed Taylor’s ear for jazz. Her college studieshave molded and shaped her love for the genre, and hertastes have broadened to include others like neo-soul.

Danielle’s interest in jazz came a little later. She startedinstrumental training as a flutist, but in seventh gradewanted to join the jazz band and picked up thesaxophone. She immediately fell in love with the sax, thevariety of styles that make up jazz, and the creativeprocess of improvisation.

Different performance pathsEach followed a different performance path in jazz. Asan undergraduate, Danielle played baritone saxophonewith the Harpur Jazz Ensemble, directed by MikeCarbone. She says, “It was a stellar ensemble to learnfrom and grow with.” Danielle currently plays tenor saxwith the Ladies First Jazz Big Band, an all-female bandin Buffalo, NY, where Danielle is in graduate school. Shejoined Ladies First in 2015 and has performed withthem at diverse venues like the Lewiston Jazz Festival,Chautauqua Institute, and Colored Musicians Club inBuffalo.

Kim, on the other hand, took a detour before returningto jazz. For many years she only played piano at home

While most Mu Phis focus on classical music during their academic studies, many perform in other genres duringtheir collegiate years and beyond. In this first of an occasional series exploring members’ musical activities outsidethe classical realm, The Triangle profiles four Mu Phi women in jazz. Sheri Izzard (Alpha Kappa, Kansas CityAlumni) sings professionally in commercial music and in jazz ensembles. Kim Sivils (Alpha Kappa, Kansas CityAlumni) has built a thriving career as a jazz pianist in clubs and for private events. Danielle Stoner (Zeta Eta,Rochester Alumni, District Director EGL1) plays saxophone with an all-female jazz band while studying toward agraduate degree in social work. Vocalist Taylor Young (Gamma Eta) is completing her bachelor’s degree in jazz atCentral State University. Their responses to an email interview are the basis for this article.

for enjoyment. Then in 2005, her dad invited heronstage at a jazz club to play a duet with him. She says,“It was magical. I knew then that I had to concentrateon making my childhood dream come true: I wanted toplay jazz piano. Fortunately for me, respected bassistSteve Rigazzi heard our duet and asked if I had anyinterest in playing with him as a bass-piano duo.” Theyspent several months practicing, then recorded a demoCD and distributed it to local restaurants. One hiredthem, and that gig provided steady work for severalyears. Thus Kim began a still-thriving career playing atjazz clubs, fine restaurants, and for corporate andprivate events.

Taylor informally nurtured her interest in jazz until shegot to college, where she could immerse herself in thegenre, study it deeply, and perform often with her jazzensemble. She is looking forward to the group’s studyabroad this summer in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.

Sheri’s career path is perhaps the most varied. Aftersinging in high school musicals, in college she joined jazzbands as a vocalist, picked up solo gigs on the side, andparticipated in USO tour performances in three IronCurtain countries. After graduation, she taught publicschool music and performed up to six nights a week,especially while studying for her master’s degree in musiceducation. She also started working as a jingle singer inrecording studios around Kansas City, a gig thatintroduced her to a producer who later became herhusband. They relocated to Los Angeles, where Shericontinued to sing jingles, broke into singing film and TV

scores at severalmajor studios(which became a 23-year career), andperformed andrecorded with acappella jazz groupInner Voices. TodaySheri is back inKansas City, whereshe performs withher own jazz band,Sheri and the Shoes.

Not just jazzThese versatile musicians don’t limit themselves only tojazz. Sheri has sung lead with Sweet Adeline chorusesand quartets in the past, and she covered all stylesduring her Los Angeles years. She points out that in herfilm and TV work, “Classical was dominant – moviescore classical.” For live performances, she sang pop aswell as jazz.

Danielle’sundergraduatesaxophone study wasprimarily classical,and she still playsclassical repertoirefrom time to time forRochester Alumnichapter recitals or insaxophone quartetsaround Buffalo. Shealso sings everyweek with a churchchoir.

Taylor is a lifelongchoral singer whohas performedeverything fromclassical to gospel;she currently singswith the Grammy®-nominated CentralState UniversityChorus, which hasperformed in China,Prague, and variousU.S. locations. Shealso points out thateven as a jazz major,her first two years ofundergraduate studywere dedicated toclassical training.

Kim’s focus has largely remained in the jazz realm, butshe credits her involvement with Mu Phi Epsilon forbroadening her own knowledge and appreciation ofclassical music.

On being a woman in jazzJazz has historically been male-dominated, and women(especially instrumentalists) have come to the forefrontrelatively recently. We asked our four Mu Phis about theirexperience of being a female jazz musician. Kim says, “Ihonestly never felt that jazz was dominated by male players,because I have had the chance to meet many wonderfullady jazz musicians, mostly vocalists. My biggest complaintis that as a female jazz pianist, people immediately assumethat I must also sing. Which I do not!”

Taylor has some practical advice. “I have learned therewill be people who do not expect you to know much,

simply because youare a female jazzvocalist. It is clear tome that femalevocalists have to beefficient in everyaspect of the jazzworld – know keysof tunes, be able tomake lead sheetsand charts forinstrumentalists, beable to leadrehearsals, and evenhave some pianoskills to self-accompany on gigs.These things, just toname a few, arewhat will help

women gain respect in the jazz world. You have to showthat you know what you are talking about.”

Sheri has similar observations. “A ‘chick singer’ wasgenerally not considered to be someone who knewmuch about music, and my colleagues’ initial judgmentthat I didn’t know much was often obvious. But once wegot into rehearsing and performing, they came tounderstand my background, and my experiences fromthat point on were rewarding and enjoyable. I also waslucky to find bands where the guys were polite andrespectful.”

Danielle says, “Being a female jazz musician has beenboth a good and a bad experience. I was once told,“Only men can play the baritone sax well,” which mademe even more determined to work harder and getbetter. I loved all the guys in Harpur Jazz, but being oneof three women in the band could be alienating at times.Playing with Ladies First has been an amazingexperience.”

Learning to leadEach musician cites Mu Phi Epsilon as an importantpart of her life. Both Danielle and Taylor credit theirFraternity experience with teaching them to be leaders.Danielle says, “Being a chapter president and thendistrict director has given me the skills to advocate formyself and others, and without those skills I wouldn’tbe in the band. I joined Ladies First by going up to thedirector and telling her that I wanted to be a substitutewith the band. I don’t think I could have done thatwithout the skills that Mu Phi has taught me. Withconsistency and dedication, I later became a permanentmember.”

Taylor echoes those thoughts. “Being a part of this greatfraternity has taught me a lot, not only in my music lifebut also in my personal life. I have learned I can’t takethe easy road in my art because the price for success ina high one. I have learned to be a leader, and that tolead, I have to be the one doing what I’m supposed todo. It has taught me to believe in myself and my craft.”

Kim and Sheri both joined the fraternity by specialelection, so their perspective is from an alumni point ofview. Kim says, “Being a member of Mu Phi has helpedme expand my style, accept that it is okay to have myown style, and not compare myself to others. It hasgiven me the chance to share my style of jazz piano,especially improvisation, and to connect with otherpianists. I’ve even been recommended for local jobs bymy fellow members.”

Sheri sums up. “I joined only last year; no suchorganization had ever come across my path before. Butnow I appreciate the opportunity to support and helpyounger people who desire to make music their journey.Teaching, performing, and spreading the musical gift isimportant to me. I want to support the future of musicin all our lives.”

NEW CHAPTER

WELCOME ETA GAMMAInstalled May 2, 2017, Virginia Wesleyan CollegeInternational President Rosemary Ames traveled toVirginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia, to installthe fraternity’s newest chapter, Eta Gamma. Locatednear the Atlantic Ocean, the Virginia Wesleyan campusis small but beautiful. The chapter had been preparingfor its installation for several months, holding manySkype sessions with Rosemary, and all were happy tomeet her in person at last.

After a final group meeting (including the membershipquiz) the morning of installation day, Rosemary hadlunch with chapter vice president Shelby Emch andtreasurer Emily Powers to talk about chapterplanning. Topics included selection of meeting times,chapter resources, fundraiser ideas, and directions thechapter might pursue in the fall, beginning with a SERVproject for the school. Many of the members alreadyparticipate in community SERV activities and they planto involve more chapter members.

As the 4:00 p.m. installation time neared, SusanTodenhoft, District Director A2, and Marshall Pugh,District Director SE1, arrived to assist with theinstallation. Eta Gamma will join the A2 district.Rosemary had also reached out to Mu Phis who live inthe Norfolk area, and she was pleased that two of themattended the installation: Lori Shipley, who joined in1977 through Alpha Theta at Penn State University, andTylia Jones, who joined in 2008 through Alpha Zeta at

Radford University. All were pleased to meet oneanother and conduct the ritual together.

The campus was in the midst of finals, and the excitedinitiates considered the day’s events to be worthyinterruptions of their exams. The installation andinitiation rituals took place in the campus’s black boxtheater, which had a large space for the ceremony.Fifteen charter members were initiated, includingthirteen undergraduates and two faculty. Afterwards,the black box also was the site of the chapter recital, inwhich the new Mu Phis displayed fine musicianship anda high level of professionalism. Many sing with thecollege chorus, and they performed selections from theirrecent tour. Several parents, friends, and collegedignitaries attended the recital. The chapter gave itsthree graduating seniors Mu Phi honor cords to wearduring graduation and surprised President Ames with alovely gift basket.

Eta Gamma has good leadership from chapter presidentLaura Robusto and other officers, strong supportfrom faculty advisor Bryson Mortensen, andenthusiasm throughout the school. Eta Gamma isalready looking forward to introducing more students toMu Phi Epsilon and initiating another large group in thefall. Welcome, Eta Gamma, to our fraternity of Music,Friendship, and Harmony!

PreparationIn summer 2016, I called the schools and chapterpresidents in our district to ask what dates would workbest for our 2017 district conference. We decided onSaturday, March 18, 2017, and informed everyone inAugust so the date could be included in chapteryearbooks. We selected Eastern Michigan University inYpsilanti as the location because they offer us theirfacility at no charge and the surrounding area is wherewe have the most members, including Epsilon Lambdaon the EMU campus. The music department head gaveme permission to call the EMU facilities scheduler toreserve the two rooms we needed. I also asked the EMUcatering department put our date on their schedule.

PlanningIn fall 2016, emails went out to chapter presidents topromote the conference and encourage memberparticipation. I also contacted people directly aboutperforming. I asked the president of Epsilon Lambda, ourhost chapter, to organize committees for table setup,greeters, opening ceremony leaders, and discussion groupleaders, plus a photographer and media technician. Wearranged through the EMU music department to use aPowerPoint projector and screen, and asked that therecital hall piano be tuned just before the conference.

In November I worked by internet with the EMUcatering department to select the menu. In December I

made a conference invitation that included date, place,cost, schedule, and menu, and sent it to the districtchapters. Registration consisted of sending attendeename(s) and a check to the Ann Arbor Alumni treasurer,who handled conference finances. In February,directions and parking info were sent to members, andcampus security was notified to have the necessarydoors open on the conference day.

Week beforeThe host chapter’s president sent me the names of allvolunteer committee members, and performers providedtheir recital details. Five days before the conference, Ityped up the program and had it produced by the copycenter staff at Washtenaw Community College, whocreated a beautiful booklet. A day before the event,checks were written for the catering department, guestspeaker, and EMU chapter president. Three EMUstudents helped me set up tables and chairs in theorchestra room, our main conference space. We saved$100 by using tables from the lounge (with permission,of course) rather than renting them. Finally, the mediatechnician and I phoned the featured speaker tocoordinate her PowerPoint needs.

Conference dayThe room looked beautiful with dark green tableclothson the serving tables, white cloths on the dinner tables,and lovely centerpieces made by Epsilon Lambda. Webegan with an opening ceremony led by Epsilon Lambdapresident Audrey Impellizzeri. Then attendees brokeinto facilitated discussion groups on different topics.The group leaders kept records of the discussions andgave group reports when everyone reconvened. This wasfollowed by our luncheon, which began with grace sungas a round, followed by a delicious Italian buffet.

After lunch, our chapter presidents spoke in detail abouttheir groups’ progress, achievements, and plans. ElaineMoore (Toledo Alumni) spoke of how wonderfully the

alumni and collegiate chapters are workingtogether. Donna Chrzanowski (Detroit Alumni)has recently revitalized Phi Kappa at WayneState University, and the alumni chapter hasgiven eleven scholarships. Debbie Ash (AnnArbor Alumni) spoke about the wonderfulthings that have happened in her life because ofbeing a Mu Phi (see page 18). We also heardfrom Meridian Prall about Epsilon at Universityof Toledo, and from Audrey Pellizzeri aboutEpsilon Lambda.

The featured speakers were Mr. and Mrs.William Hayes, co-founders of the YpsilantiYouth Orchestra’s educational program thatoffers free, weekly group music lessons to areayouth. After their impressive presentation,Audrey asked, “How can we help?” As a result,EMU students will have the opportunity to teachat YYO – service through music!

RecitalThen we moved to the beautiful Organ Recital Hall for the conference recital. Performers included harpist LaurelFederbush (Gamma, Ann Arbor Alumni) who performed three of her own new compositions; Meridian Prall andother vocal soloists from Epsilon; and the entertaining 11-member Clarinet Continuum, which includes several AnnArbor Alumni members. The Epsilon vocalists sang two Mu Phi songs, and all attendees concluded the day bysinging “Our Triangle” together.

Future plansWe generally have 50 to 60 people at our GL1 district conferences. Next year we will return to having a free GL1district conference, with a donation box at the recital door. We will eliminate the meal, and therefore the last-minutecollecting, counting checks, and fees to the caterer. We will offer a free reception after the recital, sponsored by thedistrict’s alumni chapters.

Soon after college, I moved back to Ann Arbor, where I affiliated withAnn Arbor Alumni right away. I found myself amidst a group ofsuccessful musicians who immediately took me under their wing andsent me students. When I decided to get my graduate degrees in fluteperformance, my chapter was behind me at every step, starting withcritiqued practice for my entry auditions and continuing withencouragement and performance opportunities.

Speaking of performance, another benefit of chapter affiliation is thatI can always find someone to perform with me. For instance, Irecently performed with Gail Jennings (Gamma) in Canada and at the2016 National Flute Association in San Diego. When clarinetistMarcia Anderson (Tau) affiliated last year, I brushed up myflute/clarinet repertoire and we formed the Daisy Duo/Trio.

I’ve made many connections through the chapter, such as late chapterpatron and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Leslie Bassett, who wrotea composition for my trio. Former chapter president and late,renowned piano pedagogue Frances Danforth once let myaccompanist and me practice on her harpsichord to prepare for acompetition (which I won). Later, I bought that same harpsichord forthe price she paid for it in1969; Frances wanted itto have a good home.

Continued affiliation hasbrought me other unique

opportunities. Two years ago, in pursuit of a new career direction, Iapplied for and won the Mary Alice Cox Award for Lifelong Learning. Itpaid my way to an intense conducting workshop at the University ofMichigan and for conducting lessons and supplies. Last summer, when Isent our chapter’s newsletter to International President Rosemary Ames,I mentioned (since she lives in the Boston area) that I would soon beplaying in a flute concert there. Guess what? She and her husband came,loved it, and ate dinner with us afterward.

A harpsichord, conducting lessons, musical partners, students, gigs –none of these would have happened as easily had I not been an activelyaffiliated alumni member. The true wealth of Mu Phi Epsilon is inits alumni chapters. I challenge every collegiate to join an alumnichapter after graduation. Wherever you end up, you will have instantmusical friends and continue to benefit from the magic of Music,Friendship, and Harmony.

Music educator ElaineBernstorf (Phi Pi,Wichita Alumni, ACME)was inducted in Februaryto the 2017 Kansas MusicEducators Hall of Fameduring a KMEA workshopheld in Wichita. Her longand distinguished careerincludes special musiceducation, early childhoodarts, speech pathology,literacy, and curriculumdevelopment. A memberof the Wichita StateUniversity music faculty

since 1993, she served as Associate Dean of Fine Arts(2000-2009) and interim Dean of the College of FineArts (2003-2004). She has administered WSU’s KodalyCertification Program and facilitated summer Kodalyworkshops since 2003. She co-authored the book TheMusic and Literacy Connection and is published inExceptional Music Pedagogy for Children withExceptionalities. An active Mu Phi, Elaine is chapteradvisor for Phi Pi and a past president of WichitaAlumni.

Conductor and composerCharles Dickerson III(Omega Omega, PalosVerdes/South BayAlumni) was interviewedin early January onclassical public radiostation KUSC. He talkedabout his work with theInner City YouthOrchestra of Los Angeles(icyola.org), of which heis the founding executivedirector and conductor,

San Diego Alumni presented a 2017 concert seriesthat featured music by women composers, attracting upto 80 in the audience for each performance. Chaptermembers who performed included pianist FontaineLang (Mu Theta), violinist Eileen Wingard (Phi Nu),and cellist Carolyn Sechrist (Phi Nu).

Flutist Jane Osborne Sandstrom (Mu Gamma,Colorado Springs Alumni) recently attended a workshop“Once a Flutist, Always a Flutist” in Boulder, taught byeminent flutists Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway, andplayed in the master class with Lady Jeanne. A recentnew affiliate with the alumni chapter after moving toColorado Springs three years ago, Jane plays with theLittle London Winds, Pikes Peak Flute Choir, and RockyMountain Wind Symphony. She also teaches high schoolscience.

Composer Alex Shapiro (Phi Nu, Los Angeles Alumni,ACME) was re-elected to the Board of Directors ofASCAP as its sole symphonic and concert writerrepresentative, and was also appointed to the boards ofThe ASCAP Foundation and The Aaron Copland Fundfor Music. Alex has had recent artist residencies atUniversity of Montana, University of Hawaii, RooseveltUniversity in Chicago, and University of Minnesota, andshe was the featured guest composer at University ofBritish Columbia’s 2016 Wind Conducting Symposium.She has several new CD releases and she appears in tworecent Michael Stillwater movies, Shining Night: APortrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen and In Searchof the Great Song. In February 2017 Alex’s tuba sonataMusic for Two Big Instruments was featured on dailysyndicated radio program Composers Dateline.alexshapiro.org

Harpist and music educator Patricia Terry-Ross(Gamma, Detroit Alumni), above, was named inJanuary as the Kresge Foundation’s ninth EminentArtist. The honor came with a no-strings-attached$50,000 stipend. Patricia taught music at Detroit’s CassTechnical High School for 31 years, and still plays withthe Eason Trio and the Michigan Opera Theatreorchestra. According to an article in the Detroit News,“Kresge cited Terry-Ross’s ‘unique legacy’ ofperformance and music education, and a passionatededication to Detroit’s cultural community.” More athttp://detne.ws/2kuYbtM.

Edith was afaculty member and chair of thepiano department for 42 years atBoston University, her alma mater.She directed and played in the SearsGallery Chamber Music Concertsand performed on local televisionand radio. Zach Carlson to conduct convention choirZachariah (Zach) Carlson (Zeta Lambda) will conduct the 2017 Convention

Choir. A Minnesota native, Zach earned a Bachelor of Music degreefrom University of Minnesota-Duluth with a concentration in vocal

music education. Zach joined Mu Phi Epsilon while studying atWaldorf College before transferring to UM-Duluth, where he co-

founded Zeta Rho and served as its president. Zach alsowas the founding artistic director of Split Rock Men’s

Chorus, president of University Singers, and music peeradvisor for the School of Fine Arts. Zach studied

Norwegian and choral conducting in Oslo, Norway,partially funded by a Mu Phi Epsilon Foundationscholarship. He has traveled widely in Europe andthe United Kingdom, experiencing many choralgroups. Zach currently teaches grades 6-12 choirin St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Zach says, “What an honor to be asked to conductthis summer’s International Convention Chorus! Ican’t wait to meet and sing with you. We arebasing the concert program on the theme of Unityand Hope. It will feature classics in choral literaturethat will ensure success at each rehearsal,culminating with a beautiful message. The choir willalso sing at the Memorial Ritual on Sunday,

featuring a selection written by Mu Phi JonWilliams Bauer (Alpha Kappa) entitled “When We
