Rabbi's Article

Rabbis often mention in our Yizkor sermons people who have died in the last year and who have had an impact in the world. I, myself, have done so in past years. You might remember Steven Jobs and his commencement speech at Stanford University where he said: "You've got to find what you love." Or, you might recall the story of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, whose brother Ludvig died and the newspapers mistakenly reported his own death instead. The next morning, Alfred Nobel had the disturbing experience of reading his own obituary with the headline "Le marchand de la mort est mort" ("The merchant of death is dead.") "Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by discovering the most powerful and destructive explosive, one that can kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday". That day, Alfred Nobel decided to establish the foundation that awards the Nobel prizes to create a legacy that became much different than the one suggested by his mistaken and premature obituary. Today, everyone knows about the Nobel prizes, but few remember that Nobel was the inventor of dynamite.

This year again I would like to speak about such a remarkable person, one that also has had a profound impact on each one of us. But no, it is not the person you are thinking about…

It is Someone Else… Yes, we all know his name, Someone Else. Someone Else was one of the most valued members of our community. Someone's passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person's share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list, "Let Someone Else do it." Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results; "Someone Else can work with that group." It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most generous givers in our synagogue. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference. Someone Else was a wonderful person; sometimes appearing superhuman. Everybody expected too much of Someone Else. But now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? Now that Someone Else is gone, we have no one to rely upon but us, ourselves. As notorious world leaders such as Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Egypt's Mohammed Morsi bring the gift of gridlock to NYC streets for the UN General Assembly, let us remember that Someone Else will not be there to stand up for Israel. On this Yom Kippur, let us commit ourselves to demand from our elected officials to support Israel in its struggle with the forces of Islamic radicalism, and especially the threat of a nuclear Iran. Let us resolve to contribute money to Israeli charities and especially to go ourselves to visit Israel to bring our support personally. For this reason, God willing, we will organize a Congregational Trip to Israel this coming June, and I hope that everyone here will try to join us for an experience that can have a life-changing impact for each one of us. Please contact me or the temple office for more information about our upcoming planning meeting. On Yom Kippur, as prescribed in the Torah, we follow practices of abstinence and fast. Our fasting is meant to help us focus on our spiritual health by suspending our concern with the physical aspects of life. Our fasting is also meant to help us identify with those who are less fortunate and for whom hunger is not just an occasional religious observance but a permanent painful presence in every single day of life

As we read in today's Haftarah, in the words of prophet Isaiah: "This is the fast I desire: ... to share your bread with the hungry, and to take the wretched poor into your home; when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to ignore your own kin." With the state of our economy, there is hunger even in America, more than before. We cannot wait for Someone Else to help. We are asking from every person, adult or child, to accept the minimum responsibility of bringing at least one non-perishable non-breakable food item to the Yom Kippur services and place them on the bin in our lobby to be donated to local food banks

On this Yom Kippur, we feel most acutely the loss and embrace the memory of our loved ones who are no longer

alive. As we remember the sacrifices others made so we can live proudly as Jews, let us commit ourselves to choose a rich

spiritual life, to take our Jewish souls to a higher level. In order to achieve that goal we need a Jewish community. Let

Temple Beth El become your second home. Our services every week are lively and inspiring and are followed by a

bountiful Kiddush that provides the opportunity for people to linger and enjoy the food and friendship. If you have not

attended our regular services lately, I invite you to do so. You will be not only welcomed warmly but also pleasantly

surprised.

We at Temple Beth El want to bring to bring the joy and blessings of Judaism not only to our own families but to

all. If you know of any single people or families in our community that are not connected to any Synagogue, please invite

them to visit us, or let me or the Temple office know their names and phone number so we can reach out to them and

invite them to our activities. This year we also are implementing a program by which we offer Free participation in our

JEP, Hebrew School, to any new student. Paraphrasing the name of a popular education program, please help us make sure

that "no Jew is left behind." Please feel free to contact me at any time by phone or by e-mail, rabbikupchik@gmail.com if

you know of any potential participants. We also offer a rich and FREE adult education program, starting with our very

well attended Friday Night lecture series followed by a delicious catered buffet dinner. We also offer Torah classes after

Minyan and light breakfast on Sunday mornings. We also offer classes on Wednesday evenings, this fall we plan to have a

basic Hebrew class and a Computer 101 class for all those who want to learn the basics of how to use this important tool of

modern life. This year we plan to offer children services not only for the High Holidays but once a month, and please

bring all children. Our calendar of activities is posted in our new website, www.TempleBethElMB.org so please visit it and

learn more about all we have to offer. Our congregation is also there for those who suffer a loss in their families. We offer

our members plots in Old Mt. Carmel and New Montefiore Cemeteries at a very low price We also help organize shiva,

unveilings and memorial services for our loved ones as needed.

In order to offer all these and other services to the community we need your help. Our Temple operates at a loss

every year. Without your generous financial support we cannot go on much longer. And please remember that Someone

Else will not be there to make up for the deficit. Please send in your pledge card. If you did not get one please ask one from

the temple office. And look deeply into your heart and ask yourself can I give a little more this year? Remember, Someone

Else is gone. It is only you now who can make all the difference.

May the memory of our loved ones be a source of inspiration and a call to action and generosity in the new year. Hatima Tova - may we all be sealed in the book of life.

September, 2012 Dear Friends, I am biking to a Bar Mitzvah. ALYN Children’s Hospital’s “Wheels of Love,” the largest sports charity event in Israel, is celebrating its 13th year…and you’re all invited! As the only children’s rehabilitation hospital in Israel, ALYN is dependent upon donations to fund its miraculous work with kids. For the past six years, I have been honored and privileged to be a participant in a 500 rider bike event which lasts five days and covers 300 miles. This year, the ride will begin in Arad, go through the mountains, craters and canyons of the Negev desert and finish at the hospital in Jerusalem. The celebration as we enter ALYN on the last day is nothing short of incredible—and this being the ‘Bar Mitzvah Year”, it promises to be spectacular.
