Cactus Shadows High School Student Receives a Perfect Score on the ACT Test (continued from page 1) College admissions officers review standardized test scores together with the Grade Point Average (GPA) and the classes taken in high school. Dr. Debbi Burdick, Superintendent said, “What an accomplishment! We are so proud of Katianna. She is another outstanding example of a Cactus Shadows Student.” Sonoran Trails Middle School November Students of the Month… Congratulations to STMS November Students of the Month! 7th grade: Lizbeth Morales Garcia; Makenna Gibson; Aidan Hague; Shaylin Ligon; Melissa McEnancy; and Lila Phipps. 8th grade: Chance Aaronson; Taryn Friend; Kylie Holt; Ava Ingrassia; Maya Watkins and Charlie Stahowski. Desert Sun Academy’s Science Buddies… Desert Sun Academy's 3rd and 6th grade buddies were working in the Science Lab this past month. They had great conversations and the younger students learned so much from the older ones. What a great leadership opportunity! The theme for this project was how can we, as scientists, help protect our oceans' resources?

Desert Sun Academy, CCUSD's French Immersion School, Celebrated National French Week… DSA participated in National French week (November 4-8, 2019). They increased awareness and involvement of the French Program at DSA. Students learned more about the French Culture – some wrote a one page presentation about a French Landmark or French Speaking Celebrity; and some created a work of art based on famous French Art or Landmark, among other things.

Desert Willow Elementary School’s Honor Society Food Drive… Shout out to Desert Willow Elementary School's Honor Society for their food drive. They collected 1,560 pounds of food for the Foothills Community Food Bank. Last year they collected 1,000 pounds - Thanks for giving back Roadrunners!

Sonoran Trails 7th Grade Girls Volleyball Team… Sonoran Trails Middle School 7th grade girls’ volleyball team had 8 wins and 2 losses this season and finished as the runners up in district play! Overall the Stingers outscored their competition with a blistering 482 points scored while only giving up a stingy 282 for the season.

Black Mountain Elementary School Bobcat is a swimmer… Nia has always loved the water but started swimming competitively when she was just 5 years old at Desert Foothills Aquatics. For the past year she has been on the Lifetime Athletic Swim Team. She practices 4-5 days per week for 1.5 hrs. Earlier this month she achieved her first individual AZ State qualifying time for 50y breast stroke of 43.97 seconds. What she loves most about swimming: competing, spending time with her friends. What she has learned from swimming: HOW STRONG SHE IS on the outside and inside. Her favorite Olympian: Kevin Corde- because he’s a breast stroker like her. She gets to see him every December at the Candy Cane Classic. Nia's next goal: aim for state qualifying time in 100y breast.

Desert Willow School blog… Desert Willow Elementary School blog "The Art of Language" has been featured on the STUBC international Flipboard Magazine this past month. The link takes you to the magazine and their Junior Chefs. Their cooking video is a few scrolls down the page - ROADRUNNER PRIDE!: https://mrsdsroadrunners.edublogs.org/…/junior-chefs-spani…/

Freshman Girls, Ella Bruce and Alexa Sample, were crowned Co-State Champions. It’s the first time ever in the 7 year history of the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League that anyone has ever tied for the State Championship. Alex Hernandez, in his rookie season, finished 2nd overall in the JV2 Boys field while freshman, Connor Schutza, finished a strong 2nd place in the Freshman Boys category. Good luck seniors and thank you for four great seasons....Team Captains: Parker Brown and Luke Sample, and 4 year rider, Hank Olson.

CCUSD Celebrated Veterans for the month of November, 2019

"John Clays (father of Jimmy & Kelsea, seniors at CSHS) is standing on the right and his Army comrade, Robert LeValley, is on the left. In the middle is an Arizona Veteran. John and Robert began their service in the Army in 1985 in the 443rd Battalion in Rhode Island. Last month, both Veteran's volunteered with the Honor Flight program to assist Arizona Veterans on a trip to Washington, DC." Kelly Clays

"My sweet father-in-law served in the Vietnam war. He was a devout surgeon; saving & preserving the lives of many on the battlefield. He was unfortunately exposed to Agent orange and is now in the later part of his life suffering from Lou body. An amazing father, grandfather (papou) and husband. He has 4 children (the oldest being my husband) and 9 grandchildren, (6 girls, 3 boys) the boys are all ours. Our oldest; Cody went to HTES, STMS & CSHS and is now a Junior at ASU, our middle son Luke is currently at STMS as an 8th grader and Joey is in 5th grade at BMES." Richelle M. Nassos

"We have an 8th grader at STMS, a 4th grader and 6th grader at DWES. Unfortunately my children never met their Papa. He passed at the age of 52 in 2000 after a battle with lung cancer. He was a Vietnam Vet that was responsible for making radio coordinates where the enemy was located. Something I learned later as an adult that it was known as a suicide mission because not many soldiers survived that particular job. We don’t know whether the lung cancer was related to Vietnam or his work at General Motors but he did meet the kids Lola (Grandma in Tagalog) as a pen pal during the war. They met and married a short time later." Philline Sokal

"USAF (Retired) Col. Jack Maixner, my longtime boyfriend and favorite veteran. He proudly and honorably served our nation for 22 years as an F16 pilot and completed 5 tours to Iraq. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and just celebrated his 30 year reunion. Jack is the proud father of two and is a commercial airline pilot based out of Phoenix." Kit Turnwald

CCUSD Celebrated Veterans for the month of November, 2019

Veterans Day is just around the corner and CCUSD is celebrating all month long: "Thank you for your service to all of the service men and women, but especially to our Dad, Aaron Gordon. We love you!" - Aubrie & Sophie "Aaron served in the Navy aboard the USS Alamo from 1986 to 1990. He was able to travel to places like Japan and the Philippines during that time."

"The Ochoa Family wants to honor and remember Michael Hawn for his service. Mike served as a Navy Medic with the USMC from September 1961-January 1966. He was proud of his service and loved to share stories. He was at the Panama Canal during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and spent time stationed in Okinawa, the Philippine’s, and Taiwan. Mike was particularly proud to have served his country and to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2017. His grandchildren, Adam and Maya, currently attend Cactus Shadows High School (their older siblings Sierra, Ryan, and Jared also attended CSHS), and was the inspiration for Maya to become a member of the Veteran’s Heritage Project at STMS and CSHS. Mike passed away in September of 2019 at 76 years old, and is greatly missed by us all."

"Captain Joe Caley US Army (Ret) entered military service in 1990 as an enlisted servicemen and was commissioned from the US Army Officer Candidate School as an Infantry officer in 2007. Help Kids Find Their Focus at Home There are many ways families can help children find their focus. As parents and caregivers, you can: 1. Talk to your kids about their strengths and interests. What do they think they are good at? What activities are they interested in? What career path do they want to follow? Emphasize that learning and growing require trying new things and that success comes from small steps to a long-term goal 2. Help your children develop positive relationships with peers and adults, and model respectful, caring behaviors with others. 3. Encourage goal setting and mapping out a plan for achieving the goals. Talk with your children about steps they have taken, what worked and what didn’t, and what they might do next. 4. Praise attempts, as well as success, and make sure that you focus on the effort or hard work put into the success. Emphasize the importance of deliberate practice that talent is developed over time through skillful practice. 5. Create an environment at home that allows your children to explore building (playing with blocks, helping with projects, and more), drawing (crayons, finger paints, paper), and music (on the radio, with children’s

instruments, or through formal training through school or community resources). This may help to identify special interests. 6. Help your child work through setbacks, or lack of self-confidence, by helping to identify negative thoughts that may suggest concerns about his or her ability to be successful. As a parent, you can help children see what the small steps are and how persisting and overcoming obstacles is a part of succeeding. Help your child realize that setbacks are not permanent or all-encompassing. 7. Seek out support systems available in the community to help your children learn new skills and thrive, such as tutoring or mentoring programs. Encourage your children to participate in community activities that may help them to develop positive behaviors, such as being grateful. In particular, volunteer activities may encourage the development of positive behaviors. Consider participating in community events yourself as a role model. 8. Encourage your children to participate in school and community activities that may help them to develop positive behaviors, such as being grateful. In particular, volunteer activities may encourage the development of positive behaviors. Consider participating in community and school events yourself as role a model. DISTRICT NEWS CCUSD would like to celebrate outstanding efforts in teaching and learning by recognizing exceptional teachers and students: Dr. David Savidge teaches 10th grade Honor's English at Cactus Shadows High School. Savidge encourages students to think outside the box and not just read books but also "taste them" by sampling the foods that go with the timepieces they read about. Savidge doesn't put limits on how creative students can be with his assignments and his students respect him for his willingness to listen to them and help them find their originality. Savidge's classroom includes enlarged photos of students who are "being framed for success" and he encourages his current students to find these role model students around campus. Pictured is Savidge with some of his students dressed like him on "twins day."

Zander Munhall is an 11th grader at Cactus Shadows High School and plays on the football team. His former teacher, Dr. Savidge says of Zander, "He's the type of guy who doesn't make excuses. He is calm, kind, honest and owns up to every situation as an opportunity to constantly improve. Zander is a role model for other students because he knows how to persevere and this is an excellent quality to celebrate." Pictured is Zander in front of his enlarged photo which can be seen on the wall in Dr. Savidge's classroom.

Carefree Cares Awards The Town of Carefree Town Council is sponsoring a quarterly recognition award given to a CCUSD staff member at each of our seven schools.
