Special Gift for Dad!

What is a dad?

A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall

but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes

but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry,

scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed,

and has faith in you even when you fail.

Greetings,

As we move towards summer this month and transition into the second half of

the year, it is encouraging to see such good growth in our church for the first half of the 2016 year with a

weekly average attendance of 440. With several regular Sundays tipping toward 500, we look with antici-

pation to moving into our new Worship Center in just three months. May was a great month for our

church as we baptized 5, had 8 becoming members of the church, dedicated 9 children to the Lord, com-

missioned 12 graduating seniors, and finished up another great semester of Life University.

As we enter the month of June, the calendar is definitely full. Besides all of the preparations that will go

into Freedom Spectacular and Vacation Bible School this month, we have scheduled the Annual Meet-

ing of the Southern Baptist Convention in St. Louis, several weddings, three separate summer camps for

children, middle school, and youth, Father’s Day, and a Mission Trip to Haiti. June promises to be a

fruitful month of ministry in our church family.

Building Update: It is truly amazing to see all of the progress being made on our

new Worship Center. What an amazing tool God is preparing to bless us with. The

building is dried in and most of the exterior work has been completed. That means

that the work inside of the building can continue even when we are having raining

weather outside. Already, there has been a considerable amount of work done on

the inside of the building. They are also making good progress on the extended foyer

which attaches our new building to our existing educational facility which will con-

tain our new nursery and toddler area. Every week, a little more gets done. They are also going to be

pouring a new parking lot just to the east of the New Worship Center. We are projecting an August

completion date for the project.

Vision: So far we have received just about $370,000.00 through our Building for Life Campaign that we

launched a year ago last January. It is hard to believe that it was two years ago last month that we first

voted to begin the process of building a new sanctuary, and now in just a few more months we will be

completing it. As I drove by the new building this morning on the way to work coming up North Street,

I saw it there looking almost finished from the outside. It made me think about all of the sacrifices of

time and money that had been spent literally over several decades to bring our church to this

point. What a vision our church has been given to reach people as we make Christ known in Warrens-

burg and greater Johnson County. I am excited that so many have joined us in this vision. People from

other parts of the world, some of which had never even heard of Warrensburg, are now here helping to

fulfill what God has called us to do. If you’d like more information on our “Building for Life” project,

give us a call. Let’s all join together in completing what God has called us to do.

Southern Baptist Convention: Pray for our messengers as they gather together in St. Louis

June 12-16 for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.

“Submerged”

Motto: Jesus sees. Jesus knows. Jesus saves.

July 10 - 15 from 6:00 - 8:45 p.m.

This summer, take your kids on an adventure like no other, deep within the mysterious sea. As kids submerge themselves in God’s Word, they will discover that Jesus didn’t just see what’s on the outside of people.

He looked deep down on the inside. So grab your goggles, step into your flippers, and dive in to find truth below the surface!

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns.

See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way."

- Psalm 139:23-24 (HCSB)

This month’s “Noteworthy” is almost a reprint of June articles from

2012-15 with just a few tweeks pertaining to this year. The

thoughts on transition, change, and transitional transformation

have still been important for me to digest and apply during my third year of retirement from full time public

school teaching. I feel less demand on my time, but just as much demand for obedience (if not more). The

information and encouragement given in past years, not unlike having to eat daily or die to self daily, still seems

worth repeating for all of us (and we have many new members who will be reading this for the first time!). Here

we go with words from the past to reaffirm their value and our need for repetition, the mother of skill. J

As May passes and June approaches, many thoughts come to mind. I’ve written to graduates and have been

forced to think about their (and my) accomplishments, and the impending changes, endings, and beginnings

that will affect their lives. Not only their lives, but mine and yours are changing and in TRANSITION….always

in a state of flux.

I came across an article in “Let’s Worship” magazine that spoke to worship leaders about the idea of transition

and change in relationship to worship. I would like to share this short article by Matt Tullos with you. It’s title,

“The Whole Truth”, refers to the Bible telling the truth, the whole truth. Here are Matt’s ideas (boldface add-

ed by myself):

The Bible tells the story straight. No overly extravagant adjectives, no airbrushed complexions, nor secrets. It’s

all there—the dysfunction, the doubt, and the desperation. The Bathshebas and Jezebels, Samsons, and Sauls are

not gussied up to create a half spoken, child-proof version of actual events. It can be trusted as the whole truth.

In Abraham’s life we see the father of God’s chosen in all His doubt, fear, and shortcomings. We also look up-

on a passionate man of faith. He teaches us that this path toward God is a journey of change and surprise. He

was a work in progress. Worship is all about transition and transformation. As a pastor, I struggle with my po-

sition as the point of the spear in change. All complaints seem to come to me many days. It’s our duty as wor-

ship leaders to press the church to dive deeper in worship, to prevent individuals from downsizing God into

someone we can control. But we’re far too easily comfortable. I pray that your church is in transition because

that’s the monetary system of our culture.

There are some who prefer their comfortable pew

Their ruts of worship and their old habits too.

Some won’t carry the cross of our King,

more concerned about comfort and the songs that we sing.

Some are lost in a maze of struggle for power,

while millions untold face their final hour.

Some cling to the past and refuse to obey

They’ll never agree no matter what you’ll say.

They refuse to look past traditions of men

And if we do that, we’re living in sin.

God, you see, is all about change

It’s “Onward, Christian Soldiers”—not “Home on the Range”

It’s living, not just singing, “Trust and Obey”

And saying to God, “Have Thine Own Way”

It’s trusting when everything’s falling apart

And declaring to Him, “O God, change my heart!”

God has a future worth waiting for …

Page 5

A journey worth packing for …

And an inheritance worth dying for.

Tullos seems to be asking us to EMBRACE CHANGE and seek to be in TRANSI-

TION for the sake of TRANSFORMATION. As a worship leader who could be

considered an “agent” of change, I’m reminded of a quote I keep in my briefcase

that I would like to share: “Divert Daily (whatever relaxes); Withdraw Weekly

(Sabbath); and Abandon Annually (disconnect completely)”.

Those words and thoughts resonate with me completely. The advice, if taken, can

give us time to reflect, rejuvenate, and focus on the true source of EVERYTHING!

I’m reminding myself as I write that we should all slow down daily, weekly, and

annually to ensure there is time for prayer and connection with our Creator. This will insure a life of TRANSI-

TIONAL TRANSFORMATION!!! Worship can then become more central in our lives and our perspective of

this world can become more accurate. Our focus can be shifted to the eternal values our Father has planted

deep within our souls. We can share his holiness with others through the fruit of the spirit as we grow deeper

in our faith and closer in our relationship with Him.

I encourage and challenge all of us to maintain this philosophy year-round and not just during “convenient”

times of the year. I further challenge each of us to find an accountability partner to help us achieve this goal.

Although our times of daily diversion, weekly withdrawal, and annual abandonment will feel and look different,

they should exist….. and they should create TRANSITIONAL TRANSFORMATION :-)

In His Service and looking forward to my annual abandonment soon,

- David

Ten Biblical Reasons for Going to Church

& Connecting to a Sunday School

The following ten reasons for connecting to a church are outlined from chapter one of Dr. Donald Whitney’s book, “Spiritual Disciplines within the Church”. They are an excellent precursor to our Sunday School Life Workshop coming

June 7th at 6:30pm in the Family Life Center for all Sunday School teachers and leaders. Here now are Ten reasons for going to church. It:

1. Is a Biblical Requirement for All Christians (Hebrews 10:24-25 & Ephesians 1, 4, & 5). • To speak of loving Christ while neglecting His body, the church, is hypocritical.

2. Helps Prevent Backsliding & Falling Away (Hebrews 10:25) • Statistics show that if you don’t go to church for a month, the odds are almost two-to-one that you won’t go back consistently for more than a year. The preaching of the Word, corporate worship of God, and the fellowship of the people of God helps to protect us from drift. (Barna, What Americans Believe, 249-250)

3. Brings Spiritual Fellowship & Encouragement (Hebrews 10:25 & Romans 15:4-5) • Anyone can socialize, only Christian can fellowship in a Biblical way. That is to talk and weave the Gospel into every element of each other’s lives from hobbies to work to family.

4. Expresses Obedience to the Greatest Commandment (Mark 12:28-30) • How can we believe we are trying to fulfill the greatest of all God’s commandments, if we won’t even obey His command to meet regularly with other Christians in worship?

5. Follows Jesus’ Example (Luke 4:16) • Jesus is God in flesh and He knew the need and importance of being with the people of God for the glory of God. If Christ treated it as a priority, shouldn’t we?

6. Is a Testimony of Support For God’s Work in The World (Matthew 12:30) • When we choose not to attend and participate in church, we also choose to scatter our family and friends who might be gathered under the influence of Christ’s work if we attended and encouraged them to join us.

7. Enables You to Hear in Person the Preaching of God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:2-4) • Radio sermons, podcasts, and other means of hearing the word are not the same as gathering with a local body and hearing the Word preached to you. Choosing to only listen to TV or Radio Preachers that we prefer encourages isolation from the body rather than submitting oneself under the Word with the local body of believers from a local pastor.

8. Allows you to take the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:19 & 1 Corinthians 11:26) • The Lord’s Supper is an order of Christ to be participated of not in a niche Sunday School class or by one-self, it is meant to be partaken of together by a local body of believers.

9. Helps Prevent an Unbalanced Christian Life (Ephesians 4:11-16) • Christians who do not faithfully attend one local church are usually the most unbalanced Christians. They are far more likely to jump on to the latest spiritual fads and grains of heresy that unfortunately accommo-date many works on the Top Christian Bestseller list. The internet, though not evil, has opened the door of false teaching to every single Christian who lingers online.

10. Is an Indication of Eternal Life (1 John 2:19 & 3:14)

• You can be sure that attending church does not make you a Christian any more than sleeping in the garage does not make you a car. That said, John is clear that a mark of someone who does not know Christ is that

they will walk away from the fellowship of the local church. How can someone say they can’t wait to be in

Heaven worshiping Christ with His people, when he disdains being with His people and worshiping Christ

together on earth? Having a desire for fellowship is a fruit of being in right relationship with the Lord.

These Truths are not meant to be a hammer to wound you, but to encourage you to continue to run hard

after Christ in our imperfect, but Gospel focused congregation for the Glory of God.

“Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over”.

- Luke 6:38,

He didn’t say ,”only give to those who can give back to you.” Have you ever done something for someone

that can never repay you?” We have opportunities everyday to give to those who can never pay you back,

because it is not about paybacks, it’s about being obedient to our Father’s commands to give and love.

Grover Park has invitations to do Mission work in South East Asia sometime

after January 2017 preferably in the early summer time. As time progresses I will

give you more details. We also have an opportunity to work in England with

interested in finding out more about any of the above, please contact me.

We have an opportunity to serve right here in Warrensburg. We would like to take a fruit basket to the

offices of the folks that provide us with electricity, water, gas, police, fire department and ambulance service.

We would like to set a date of June 3rd to include our church family in helping provide fruit for these precious

folks. If any of you would have good size baskets to put the fruit that would be a great help also. I don’t know

about any of you, but when our utilities or first responders help we feel so great full. We need to show them

how much we appreciate them. Please bring your fruit baskets by the church between June 1st & 3rd.

We continue to pray for our workers in the fields. Sharing the truth with those that have not heard.

On a great note the Hughes will be back in the states for a short period of time. They will be staying

in Clinton and have said they would love to come to Grover and share what the Lord is doing in their

lives where they are serving. They will be stateside from June 2016 until January 2017. If you haven't

Heard, the Lord surprised them with a baby girl this last year.

We continue to serve at Shiloh the 2nd Monday evening and handing out food the first

and third Sat, of each month also at Shiloh.

Hey Guys,

Happy Independence Day! Independence Day is always a fun time

for families to celebrate together. As you approach

Independence Day, are you busy thinking about where your

family will go, how many fireworks you will buy, or whose

celebration you will attend? Many things can grab for our time, but Jesus constantly reminds us in the Scriptures to focus on Him. We celebrate our Independence as a nation, an Independence that was sought after when our forefathers were faced with the reality of spiritual oppression. They would form a nation where

anybody could worship Jesus as King! Sometimes we

forget that we have the freedom to worship and instruct our kids

in the way of the Lord. We have been given so many very

wonderful freedoms, let us use them to point our kids to the

merciful arms of the Savior who loves each of us without

reservation and without favoritism. A great way to “spark”

and “ignite” wonderful conversations about being free to

worship Jesus, is by checking out Freedom Spectacular.

Hope to see you here on the 4th!

Hey Guys, May always seems to go by so quickly. Graduations have been exciting this year. It’s so neat to see as kids grow, how the various influences in their lives help to shape the men and women they become. As we enter June, we look forward to Father’s Day on June 19th. It is such a neat thing to see so many dad’s involved in their kids lives, We have some amazing moms and dads here at Grover. It is interesting to me that the first observance of a Father’s Day was born out of tragedy. A mining disaster, way back in 1907, killed over 200 dads, leaving around a thousand kids fatherless. At that time in history, a church surrounded the fatherless and did what the church does, showed the love of Christ to those many without hope. Now, the holiday itself would not become official until 1972, but it all started back in 1907, through a horrible tragedy—where the nation was reminded of the irreplaceable role that dad’s play in American families. Each dad and mom is unique and completely necessary—but we know that just like back in 1907, tragedies still occur. Praise God that He is called a Father to the fatherless. A Word From Our Sponsors

Hey there, Melissa here! Last month held a special day, Mothers day and this month holds another special day,

Fathers day. On Mothers day we saw many of our young ones from the nursery be dedicated to the Lord. What a

testimony of the growth and future of our church as we saw parents publicly declaring to raise their children according

to God’s standards. We can celebrate the wonderful life that’s been giving to these parents as well as encourage and hold parents accountable to the responsibility God has given

them. Provers 22:6 says, “Direct our children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” If we are exposing our children daily to God and His word and

teaching them how God wants us to live they will remember what they have been taught. I wish every Mother a belated happy Mother’s day and every Father a happy Fathers day!

Gail Grey (9:30 a.m. Service Nursery Worker)

Recently I had the chance to serve alongside Gail

in the nursery. I truly enjoyed the atmosphere of love and nurturing

that Gail helped to create. Gail spoke calming words of affirmation to

the children as they played. I truly believe that when we pray over our

children and give them over to the Lord we are bringing them unto Him

(Mark 10:14) It’s a joy to see how Gail brings the love of Christ into the

lives of the children as they play!

We have an amazing group of children in our preschool

room. We have been talking about God's love for us, and

these kids have it down.

This last few weeks we have had a visitor named Brandon.

Brandon does not speak English right now. He speaks Chi-

nese. But we have found ways of communicating. The first Sunday Brandon attended he sat there so

content to just watch what was going on. That week we were sharing the account of Jesus at the Well.

Of course we told the story the preschool way! Anytime I said, "water" we would spray the kids with a

water bottle and then for our activity we carried cups on our heads, like the woman with pots on her

head, and did a relay race. I can't imagine what he was thinking. But I do know he told his mom that

he wanted to come back.

Brandon followed the children and did what they did. Next, we were coloring our pictures that went

with the story. I couldn't stand that I wasn't able to share Jesus with him in his language. I wanted to

share our bible story with Brandon so much. After searching on Google I finally found a way on my

tablet to write what I wanted to say to Brandon. I showed him the marker he was using. Then I wrote

my first word to him "the color brown" and had the tablet speak the word in Chinese. His eyes lit up.

He would repeat the words in his language. We had connected. Shivers went down my spine. I later

used my tablet to say, "Jesus", "the well", "Jesus loves you", ect. while I pointed to the coloring picture.

Later we found a site that had "Jesus Loves Me" video in his language and played it. The kids knew the

tune and they sung it in English while Brandon watched and smiled. The other preschoolers loved ask-

ing how to say different words in Chinese. We looked up car, different colors, hi, good bye, boy,

good,..... The children have welcomed him with open arms. It is amazing how much you can com-

municate without saying a word. We can share God's love without saying a word. Just by being kind

and showing love. But I am still glad I have Google to help. I am so happy that Brandon has joined us

in class. We could not have this experience without him. Thank you God for your children.
