NEWS

Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

Could it be that we are finally witnessing the end of theInternet financial hype? In just a couple of weeks, a series ofevents has brought the new e-conomy to the brink of col-lapse, seriously damaging commercial confidence in thedot.com phenomenon.

There were some warning signs-such as the highlyanticipated IPOs of new companies like World Online and T -Online performing below expectations, and the cash warn-ing by CDnow-but the real wake-up call was last week'sdecision from the US Justice department about Microsoft's"dominant position," which has sent some shivers throughinvestors (and speculators).

It is too soon to say if the e -bubble will be burst by an e -crash, but it seems the time has come for a realistic evalua-tion of this new business.

Many now believe that the new economy has reached astage where it should be able regulate itself through a sort

of Darwinian principle which will see the survival of thefittest-or at least of those with the most solid businessmodels and the most relevant or creative products.

What should the music and broadcasting industriesmake of this new situation? Like any other businesses (andprobably more than most), both industries have been dras-tically transformed by the introduction of the Internet, quiteoften against their own will.

The transformation of these industries will certainly con-tinue at a cracking pace, but it will be more difficult tofinance new projects.

And what if the bubble indeed bursts? In a very interest-ing essay on Internet economics pub-lished last week, The Economist pre-dicts that even if dot.com companiesdon't perform as well as hoped, theInternet will make most businessesmore efficient, boost productivity andbenefit the consumer and companiesalike by cutting out some intermedi-aries, offering savings on servicesand bringing prices down. Therecould be worst scenarios.

BOL's Internet station stands aloneby Juliana Koranteng

LONDON - BOL, the e -commerce ven-ture owned by European media giantBertelsmann, has launched a stand-alone version of its Internet radio ser-vice which currently provides msuicfor its e -tail Internet sites.

BOL Radio was initially launchedlast November as part of BOL's UKand German e -tail sites, and is expect-ed to be extended to the Dutch andFrench sites next. So far, however, theradio service has only allowed users tolisten to its streamed music whilelogged on to the BOL sites themselves.

Now the recently -launched, moreadvanced format allows listeners toclick on a BOL Radio icon on the Webpage, triggering a pop-up window thatappears on the PC screen.

For the first time, the online surfercan leave the BOL Web site-and evenleave the Internet itself-to continue

listening via the on -screendigital player on the PC'sdesktop.

BOL also claims thatits online radio channel isthe first in Europe toallow listeners to clickand order CD albumsrelating to the trackbeing played simultane-ously.

Future potential devel-opments include adding music video, other entertainment content andadvertising to BOL Radio.

"We're definitely exploring alloptions to expand the radio service,"says Erik Weiss, BOL's New York -based director of music development."We're looking at all the creativethings we can do to make it as enticingas possible."

A playlist of more than 50 tracks, which is updated every week, features

a combination of thoseavailable from BOL'sstores and those yet togo on sale online.

The on -screen digi-tal player, based onMicrosoft's WindowsMedia Technologies, features the artist'sname, the song titleand the album, plus"play," "stop" and

"mute" buttons.Although telephone connection con-

tinues during BOL Radio's transmis-sion, Weiss argues that "the emer-gence of unlimited Internet access inEurope means Internet radio will real-ly take over how people listen tomusic, whether it's on their PC, intheir car, or on the [mobile] telephone."

Over the next few weeks, up to 90%of the tracks played on BOL Radio areexpected to be available for purchase.

Edel posts 58%revenue riseby Terry Heath

LONDON - Edel music AG, Europe'slargest independent music group, hasreported sales up 58% to DM450.9million (euro 231.2m) in 1999, a sub-stantial increase on 1998's DM284.4.

A statement says the growth wasachieved "through approximately 20%internal growth, with the remainderlargely coming from the first time con-solidation of the Play It Again Sam(PIAS) group [acquired in 1999] forthe second half of 1999."

Edel issued a profit warning inNovember last year and announcedthe postponement of a number ofpotentially high profit margin albumreleases. In line with this warning, profits before interest and taxes werenegative at DM5.3 million, and netloss for the year was DM10.8 million, due, says a spokesperson, "to the neg-ative impact of changed tax rules.

Baden-Wuetemberg gets its Big FMby Gesa Birnkraut

HAMBURG - A new player hasentered the competitive Baden-Wuerttemberg radio market in Ger-many this month, following thelaunch of highly -researched commer-cial station Big FM.

The CHRIDance outlet's program-ming line-up includes head of musicBernd Hoffmann, former head ofmusic at local commercial stationSunshine Live, and programme direc-tor Kristian Kropp, who spent sevenyears at Hot AC station Hit RadioAntenne before coming to Big FM.

Broadcasting 24 hours a day, BigFM is the first German radio stationto feature a weekly preview of tracksfrom newcomers that haven't beenplayed on the radio before.

The station won its licence inNovember 1999 against 23 competi-tors when the Baden-Wuerttembergmedia authority decided to give theavailable FM frequencies to a group

formed by commercial networkRadio Regenbogen. Big FM is cur-rently broadcasting from RadioRegenbogen's studio in Mannheim, with four FM frequencies in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

As part of the station's pre -launchresearch, more than 2,000 people inthe 14-24 demographic have beenquestioned over the last six monthsabout their interests and music pref-erences, and big FM promises to con-tinue asking for its listeners' opinionstwice a month. "Our USP is that wehave a music mix which is new inBaden-Wuerttemberg. We will testevery single title on the market,"explains programming director Krist-ian Kropp. "We are not music peda-gogues, and we take the opinion ofour listeners seriously."

The programming concept has astrong focus on interactivity, and pre-senters will be in contact with theirlisteners all the time, which is why allshows will ultilise two presenters.

Record salesup in Swedenby Johan Lindstrom

STOCKHOLM - Music sales aresharply up in Sweden in the firsttwo months of 2000, continuing onfrom the market's strong perfor-mance in 1999.

According to figures released byIFPI Sweden total revenue is up30.4% for January and February, compared to the same period in1999.

Total unit sales were up 28.2%,with CD sales increasing 31.2% to3.47 million units and singles grow-ing 23.6% to 845,000 units.

In February, the surge was evenmore evident, with a 39.9% growthin income and a 34.2% increase inthe total number of units sold.

In 1999, sales in the Swedishmarket were up 3.4% in value and4.2% in volume compared to 1998.

Asa Torneryd, managing direc-tor at Virgin Records Scandinavia, says the good figures for 1999 andthe positive start to this year isdirectly related to the quality ofmusic released during the last fewmonths: "There have been a lot ofgood releases, a good mix of localrepertoire and good compilations. We hope that this development con-tinues."

However, Tomas Stenmo at IFPISweden warns that the first fewmonths are prone to wide fluctua-tions from year to year: "Januaryand February aren't normally verystrong months, and we can't yet seea trend for the whole year. But we'vehad some big releases, plus wide-spread coverage of the music busi-ness in general and of the SwedishGrammis awards in particular."

Sales of many of the Grammiswinning albums, by artists such asRobyn, Petter and Christian Falk, were revitalised and boosted theirchart positions after the awards, which partly accounts for theupward trend.

Some Christmas successes alsocarried over into the new year-forexample En Salig Blandning (Fral-sningsarmen/MN), a charity album

featuring popartists cover-ing well-known Salva-tion Armysongs.

Lars Braskof departmentstore chainAhlens com-ments: "Wehave seen avery positivedevelopment.

We are up about 15% for the firstthree months of 2000, and the startof last year was good as well."

Brask adds that some of theincrease in sales can be attributedto the fact that Ahlens has reducedits imports of CDs from abroadsince last year.

Italy's music market flat: statepromises new anti -piracy lawsby Mark Dezzani

ROME - After four years of delays,Italy will finally get its tougher newlaws to deal with music pirates.

A delegation from the Interna-tional Federation of PhonographicIndustries (IFPI), led by chairmanand CEO Jay Berman, announcedin Rome on March 31 that followingmeetings with government officials"at the highest level," they hadreceived pledges that the new lawdrafted in 1996 will finally be rati-fied prior to the summer recess inAugust.

It was also announced that Italy'smusic" market was flat in 1999,despite an apparent 4.14% growthin shipment revenues and a 2.89%increase in units shipped comparedwith 1998.

The value of pirate music sales inItaly is estimated at euro 150 mil-lion annually, approximately 25% ofthe total market value. "Italy's pira-cy problem is connected with thelack of effective anti -piracy legisla-tion. Despite a number of promisesby Italian governments since 1996the situation has, if anything, wors-ened," comments Berman.

Enzo Mazza, DG of the Federa-tion of Italian Music Industries(FIMI), who is also president ofItaly's Federation Against MusicPiracy (FPM), adds: "Italy has the

highest level of piracy in Europe andthe lowest fines, and is on the USDepartment of Trade's PriorityWatch List for inadequate protectionof intellectual rights, but piracy isconsidered a low priority problem. However, recent raids in Naples,Rome and Sicily give clear evidenceof the connection between organisedcrime and piracy."

The draft law proposes increasingmaximum penalties for pirates fromthree months imprisonment to fouryears, with maximum fines up fromL3 million to L30 million (euro 14,800), and the sequestration of prop-erty which could have been acquiredwith the profits from pirate activity.

Commercial businesses foundguilty of dealing with pirated mater-ial could also face the threat of clo-sure. "The message launched mustbe precise: piracy is a serious crime,"says Mazza.

Compiled for the FIMI by the

accounting firm Price WaterhouseCoopers, the 1999 sales figures showincreases which are attributed to awider sample through the inclusionof edel Italy, the newly acquiredWarner Music Italy affiliate WarnerFonit, and independent labels whichhave joined FIMI in the past 18months.

A FIMI spokesperson confirmedthat 1998's market figures havebeen adjusted to include these com-panies' revenues for accurate com-parison. "After the wider sample istaken into account, growth is notmore than 2%, about the same asthe annual rate of inflation in Italylast year," says Mazza. A total of 53million units (albums and singles)were shipped in 1999 worth L747.5billion (euro 369.14 million).

Total album shipments registereda slight decrease last year, down0.06% at 48.76 million units against48.79 million in 1998. The value ofalbum shipments increased 3.01%.CD album units shipped were up3.5%, with a 5.48% increase invalue, whilst music cassette albumscontinued their decline, down 8.5%in units shipped, a drop of 5.2% invalue. CD singles, introduced inItaly just three years, continued toregister substantial growth, with a43.3% increase in units shipped(more than five million) in 1999, anincrease in value of 44.4%.

NRK accused of 'abusing' digital trialsby Kai R. Lofthus

OSLO - Norway's public broadcast-er Norsk Rikskringkasting (NRK) isfacing mounting criticism over itspreparations for the digital age.

Since 1995 NRK has operatedfour 24 -hour digital radio stations(News, Classical, Parliament andMetro) that are also broadcast onthe terrestrial FM waveband inmajor cities to help drive the take-up of digital radio sets. The plan isfor the stations to go digital -only assoon as digital radio penetrationbecomes reasonably significant. Buthardware experts say that is unlike-ly to happen until 2006.

A fifth digital channel,

mpetre.com, aimed at a youngeraudience, will launch later this year.

NRK has regulatory approval forthe stations, but both the commer-cial radio sector and Norway'smusic industry are increasinglyunhappy with the situation.

Tor Olav Reiersdal, chairman ofthe country's Local Radio Associa-tion representing commercial opera-tors, is calling upon the governmentto halt "NRK's deliberate misrepre-sentation."

He says the presence of the NRKdigital stations on FM "creates tech-nical problems for stations in manymarkets. Very few local stationsbroadcast in excess of 100 watts, while NRK operates with several

kilowatts. Even though NRK con-stantly adds new stations on the FMwaveband, we're being told that thecapacity is limited and that we haveto share frequencies."

Meanwhile, royalties to collectingsocieties GRAMO and TONO formusic played on the new digital sta-tions are calculated on the basis ofthese stations' trial nature, and as ifthe stations were a single outlet.

"We believe it's an excuse toestablish new analogue stationswhich don't cost them [NRK] anymoney [in royalties]," says IFPI Nor-way director general SmmundFiskvik. "How many stations dothey have to launch in order to con-duct digital trial sessions?"

EDI management reorganisedby Emmanuel Legrand

PARIS - Jean-Christophe Lestra, who took over from Martin Brisac aschief executive of French radio groupEurope Developpement International(EDI) last January, has reorganisedhis management team to create moreintegration and efficiency betweenthe Paris head office and the variousaffiliates of the group.

"We are moving towards a morehomogeneous and integrated interna-tional operation," comments Lestra, who has promoted financial officerNathalie Pujo to deputy general man-ager of EDI. Lestra has also appoint-ed Elisabeth Delpech as the compa-ny's new financial controller. Shejoins from Virgin Megastore, whereshe held a similar position.

Thierry Chamoux, another benefi-ciary of Lestra's reorganisation, is pro-moted to the newly created position ofgroup programme director. He waspreviously in charge of new projects. All three managers report to Lestra.

Lestra explains the changes are

the result of the need "to strengthenthe links with our affiliates by havinggreater control over financial mattersand programmes." EDI has affiliatesin Belgium, Germany, the CzechRepublic, Slovakia, Romania, Russia,Poland and South Africa, and start-up operations in South East Asia andIndia, among others.

Lestra adds that the appointmentof Chamoux is a sign that the groupwants to have a greater say in theprogramming strategy of the statioris"without giving away the concept oflocalisation. We want to make surethat all our affiliates follow ourguidelines and Thierry has theempowerment to do so."

Chamoux will be overseeingresearch at a global level, reflectingEDT's aim to have "similarly efficienttools in all territories," according toLestra, who says that music researchin Russia, the Czech Republic, Ruma-nia and Poland is already well inte-grated. Chamoux will be workingclosely on programming with USradio consultant Jeff Pollack.

BREWING UP A SANDSTORMDue for a full release at the beginning of May, Darude'sSandstorm (16 Inch/Finland), has already been in theSwedish dance charts for 14 Weeks. A classic trancer thatdoes all the right things in all the right places, the trackrises above the crowd by virtue of a throaty, TB 303 styleriff and some melodramatic, extended drops that succes-fully employ a full -on Batacuda vibe. Plenty enoughmelody to interest programmers and some thumpingbasslines for the dancefloor.

MAD FOR ITDJ Antoine and Mad Mack's Disco Sensation (SessionRecords/Germany) is a surefire tip for dancefloor domina-tion this spring. The title says it all; DS is pure pastichethat succeeds thanks to a searing string/horn sectiondelivering a sweet'n'sweeping tune over a sprightly groove.Loads of lowpass filter action and hints of booty funk inthe mix give a contemporary edge to a track that isscreaming out for a vocal contribution.

A MIDNIGHT DEMONThe enduringly spectacular voice of Randy Crawford isa welcome addition to any track. The use of her StreetLife vocal part on Demon's Midnight Funk(SMALL/France) has resulted in a sultry, sensuous

workout that is reminiscent ofBasement Jaxx's remix of Shola Ama'sversion of You Might Need Somebody.Late night funk with a deep house feelprovides the basis of this splendidmakeover while a sampled Crawford

carries the tune. A radio version is already availablewhile, amongst the remixes, deep house maestroHerbert's version is a clear winner.

SCREWING YOUR BRAINS OUT!Falling into the "most fun you can have with yourclothes on" category, DJ Screw's Like That (DigiWhite/Netherlands) is upbeat neo-gabber with one of thejauntiest basslines of this year. Irresistible on the dance -floor, the track also employs a nagging keyboardriff/melody (what is going on in Holland at the moment? It seems to have become the home of the cheesy riff) andmuch full-blooded exhortation to get on the dancefloor.Strictly a no-brainer but a good one!

A CLASSIC FROM SCOTLANDOf all the mainstay genres under the "dance" umbrella, house music is by far the classiest. And never more sothan in the capable hands of Glasgow quartet SiliconeSoul. Regularly compared to house luminaries DJPierre, Felix Da Housecat and Roy Davis Jr, thisScottish group have, in debut album It's A Soul Thing(Soma/UK), produced a cohesive set of tracks that rangefrom the deep, jazz -tinged Chic-O-Laa--unsurprisinglya string -heavy number that recalls Chic's prime-through to the appropriately named Nosferatu, a bass -heavy, hypnotic tune with a "flat beat"and heavily fil-tered, creepily disembodied voice. What really setsSilicone Soul apart is the quality of their arrangementswhich, taking into account that they are making musicprimarily for the dancefloor, is never indulgent or overt-ly long. The pay-off for that disciplined approach is evi-dent across an album that will come to be recognised asa classic of its kind.

Non-stop rock from Swedenby Siri Stavenes Dove

Four albums into their career, Swedishrockers Kent are now hoping to translatetheir Scandinavian success into salesacross Europe with- an English languageversion of their current album HagnestaHill (RCA). The original went straight tonumber one in Sweden and made theNorwegian top 10. The album's first singleMusik Non Stop has proved a huge radiohit in these territories and, as a result, willalso be released inEnglish.

In France, it hasalready achieved powerplay status at Frenchmusic TV channel MCMand Out FM is stronglybehind the track.

Head of music at theParis rock station is Jean -Patrick Laurent, whocomments: "We are play-ing Musik Non Stop allday at the moment-it's areally good pop tune withthe distinctive Swedishsound. We are already receiving e -mails fromlisteners saying they like it. We kind of start-ed the song off in France and we're lookinginto doing a concert with the band."

Over in Norway, head of music at publicCHR station NRK P3, Marius Lillelien, isimpressed with Kent but prefers the mater-ial in their native tongue. He recently addedEn Himmelsk Drog to the playlist. "They'rea very good band. We've played Musik NonStop and a few other tunes-all of them inSwedish, of course. They've been the mostplayed band on P3 in the last six months

and I think our support has been central intheir break -through in Norway. To be hon-est, I am very sceptical about the Englishtranslation of their songs and I will be verysurprised if it goes well. But then, I supposeit's all been done with people who haven'theard the Swedish version in mind."

1998 album Isola was also released inEnglish, but supports Lillelien's argumentas it failed to sell particularly well outsideof Scandinavia. Ben Godding, internationalproduct manager at BMG, explains: "Isola

laid the foundation forKent and raised aware-ness in Europe of theband. Hagnesta Hill isthe next step. Theyrealised they had con-quered Sweden, butsinging in English is amust for breaking theglobal market."

After the album isreleased on April 17(July in the UK), theEuropean campaignkicks off in May with aperformance at MTV

UK's Five Night Stand sessions alongsidethe likes of Soulwax and Embrace.

Kent then go on a club tour of Germany,Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and France.Godding adds: "This time around we'll havemassive press promotion and the band willdo festivals and numerous live perfor-mances. We're hoping for a week of promo-tion dates such as in-store appearances inthe week of the album release. The bandare at their best live and we want to rely onword of mouth for people to start gettingbehind Kent."

Miss Mukupa lays down the lawby Charles Ferro

Miss Mukupa, whose real name is KarenMukupa Thuroe Rasmussen, likes to callher music street -pop. "Street, because thereare elements of R&B and hip -hop, but witha softer pop edge to it," she explains.

Her debut album Mukupa's Law (SonyMusic Denmark) certainlydisplays a good pop sensi-bility over its 12 tracks, thanks in part to the con-tribution of her song-writer/producer and Wedofounder Remee.

The first three singles offthe album-Poplife 2000,Girlfriend and Whatever UWant-all reached numbertwo on the Danish airplaychart. "She's a good femaleDanish rapper and we don'thave too many of them!"says Mikkel Ellsgaard, assistant music pro-grammer at the Radio2/Uptown group. "Thenew single Whatever U Want with Remee isgreat. It's in our hottest rotation and will beplayed a lot. Remee's our premiere rapperand he works perfectly with Mukupa. Themusic has real international appeal."

Mzikupa's Law was released in Denmarkon February 22 and, thanks to a positiveresponse from the other European Sonylabels, Whatever U Want has since been

released in Scandinavia, Spain and Italy."When we started we did a couple of tracks,Poplife 2000 and IOU using the pop formu-la of doing new versions of old songs, but Iwas afraid of sounding too much like cer-tain American artists," says Mukupa. "I'mEuropean and wanted to do European -sounding songs. For instance, Girlfriend is

a real Euro song."When she was growing

up, Mukupa listened to alot of disco music in herparents' home. "I guess youcould say I was a pop fanat-ic. I remember listening tomy parents' MichaelJackson albums and acidjazz too," she confesses."About 10 years ago I start-ed rapping after hearingPublic Enemy as well asother groups that had aslightly different sound,

one where you didn't have to rap about thebleakness of living in the ghetto. The lyricswere a bit happier and that's what I wasaiming for."

But the ideal moment for laying downthe Mukupa law is on a Saturday night. "Isuppose the best time to put on my albumis just before you head out for a night onthe town, but then there are tracks thatyou can just sit back and comfortably lis-ten to," she adds.

MOLOKOTHINGS To MAKE AND DoEchoRelease Date: April 10

r"Bring it back, sing it back to me,"they implored last summer, andthousands of sun and lager -addled

- Ibiza devotees duly obliged makingthe single a huge European hit and a feature ofover 100 different dance compilations. This timeround on new album Things To Make And Do,Moloko have wisely decided to include the trackagain, albeit a remixed version courtesy of BorisDluglosch. As to the other numbers, 18 in all, theSheffied UK duo present a curious assortment ofelectro-funk ranging from the downright freaky andfunny (Indigo) to the more acoustic and soulful(Being Is Bewildering). But it's The Time Is Nowthat makes this album worth of every penny of thethinking clubber's CD allowance. It is a classicdisco anthem-a brilliant, toe -tapping mix ofstrings, acoustic guitar and Bee Gees falsettos.Roisin Murphy's voice is just one of the elementsthat separate Moloko from their peers. She has anexotically soulful delivery that recalls the wickedalchemy of Eartha Kitt, most obviously on PurePleasure Seeker. Release Date: March 27(UK)EMI's first priority of the year arrives three weeksafter a lavish press launch at London's ImperialWar Museum welcomed journalists with multi-coloured lasers strafing the night sky. A fittingtribute to a band that has spent the best part of 30years marrying grand statement to artisticintrospection. Whether EMI is able to attract anynew Floyd fans with this virtually note perfectrendition of a 20 year -old album remains to be seenthough, but one suspects this is not the point. Asone of rock's biggest attractions, all that's needed toboost revenues is a subtle reminder to the fan basethat there is more great catalogue to be had. And,to be fair, these recordings of the band at their peakdo offer a fascinating reminder of the tremendousvision they showed at a time when theircontemporaries were content to prance around inbouffants and make-up. The performance, essentially rock -theatre, was conceived by bandleader Roger Waters as a metaphor for the walls weconstruct in self-denial. The subject matter of these30 tracks thus veers between ennui and self -disgustand on to enlightenment. The fine lyricism andmelody of Nobody Home, Goodbye Blue Sky andComfortably Numb sound even more affecting inthe live arena, but it still amazes how we deriveenjoyment from such a starkly painful explorationof one's inner demons. DANCE

Dance BeatThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth

A new Franco-German combination is causing astir in the European Dance Traxx Top 10 thisweek. French Affair's My Heart Goes Boom (La DiDa) (RCA), featuring a French female singer andGerman producers, moves up to number seventhis week thanks to impressive performances inGermany, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Den-mark and France. With Scandinavia also addingto its roster of countries, the track should go evenhigher in the forthcoming weeks.

British act Hi -Gate holds on to the top slotfor the second consecutive week with Pitchin'(In Every Direction) (Incentive). It is beingpushed hard, however, by two former DanceTraxx number ones-Chicane featuring BryanAdams with Don't Give Up (Xtravaganza) at twoand French act Superfunk with Lucky Star (FiatLux/Labels) at three.

The resurgence of these two former chart -top-pers is bad news for Italy's Wisdome. Despite asolid gain, the act's Off The Wall (M.P.L./Posi-tiva), which has been pushed back from two tofour this week.

Two tracks by German duo Blank & Jones arerocketing up the chart. The duo's current trackThe NightFly (Gang Go/Kontor) goes from 26 to15 in only its third chart week on the DanceTraxx chart. It currently tops the German dancechart, scored the highest new entry on the Dutchclub chart this week and is also charting in Spainas an import. The act's previous release After Love(Gang Go) is currently scoring UK and Franceand, as a result, comes back in at 20 this week, after a jump into the abyss of the European danceTraxx

Moving into the Top 40 at 40 is another BobMarley song-Jammin', featuring US femalerapper MC Lyte on Universal Music's Islandand AM:PM (in the UK) imprints. The track iscurrently charting throughout Scandinavia andin Austria.

Outside the Top 40, this week's highest debutcomes courtesy of Rise act ToFunk feat. Jenny B.with Alright! (Make Me Feel). Like so many Ital-ian tracks, it first made an impact in France, butit also debuted on the Italian club chart thisweek. Definitely one to watch!

AIRPLAY

On the air111&M's weekly aiiplay analysis column

It's been a great week for Belgian chanteuse LaraFabian. Her first English language single I WillLove Again (Epic) shoots up to 18 from 39 in thisweek's European Radio Top 50, is the Most Addedrecord of the week. And if that's not enough, the

record tops M&M'sBorder Breakerschart as well. Thesuccess is mainly dueto a lot of support inthe GSA territoriesand Holland.

Std Frans van Dun,music director atnational Dutch SoftAC station Sky Radio, welcomes the track:"It's a really goodsong in the Celine

Dion genre, which our listeners love. We also playedTout and Adagio [both Epic], and we got loads ofphone calls from listeners about those. We don'tmind the language as long as it's a good song. Wealso play Helene Segara's Il Y A Trop De Gens QuiTAiment [East West] which is a similar kind ofmusic, and we've also got good response from ourlisteners about her."

The only new entrythis week is Oasis'second single fromStanding On TheShoulder Of Giants,Who Feels Love (bothBig Brother) at 39. Toms.Wilson at Edinburgh'sForth FM in Scotland isa bit sceptical about thetrack: "It's not exactlyground breaking stuff. It does get better after afew plays, but I think they chose the wrong trackfor a single. Both I Can See A Liar and SundayMorning Call on the new album would make bettersingles than Who Feels Love. It's an album track. We are playing it because it is Oasis and people arecurious. I liked Go Let It Out, but I'm not too sureabout this one. Still, we'll play it 12-14 times aweek."

The Scottish Radio Holdings -owned CHR stationhas just had a visit from Billie, who had two numberone hits in the UK with Because We Want To andGirlfriend, and whose latest song is the BritneySpears-esque Day And Night (Virgin). Says Wilson:"Billie came in on Monday to see us. Mel C is comingnext week and Eagle -Eye Cherry also came in for aninterview the other day-he's such a nice guy. Hisnew album's great and I love the song he sings withhis sister, Long Way Around. He's got a stupid name, but he has made a really good album."

Madonna and All Saints continue their game ofmusical chairs at the top of the chart - AmericanPie (Maverick/Warner) has again changed placeswith Pure Shores (London) respectively at numberone and two again this week. Re-entering the chartthis week are Whitney Houston's I Learned FromThe Best (Arista) at 47, Beck's Mixed Biznizz(Geffen) at 49 and Lene Marlin's Sitting Down Here(Virgin) at 50. Moloko's The Time Is Now (Echo)moves up 13 positions, from 24 to 11 in its fourthweek on the chart.

Looking good bets for next week are Steps'Deeper Shade Of Blue (Jive), Mary J. Blige's GiveMe You (MCA) and Sisqo's Thong Song (DefSoul/Mercury).

Cherry wraps up Present Future

Sehlberg, head of music at P5 RadioStockholm (CHR/AC). "It's more rockinspired and a bit different from hisearlier stuff. A little bit more grown-up, maybe. It's great that he's back.We are playing three tracks from thefirst album in our '90s category aswell as Wishing It Was from San-tana's Supernatural in our albumtrack category. So that makes it fivetracks-he is definitely one of ourfavourites!"

This enthusiasm for the artist inhis home territory is matchedthroughout the rest of Europe. OnM&M's European Radio Top 50 chartfor the week ending April 8, Are YouStill Having Fun? received the high-est number of playlist additions with17-considerably more than secondplaced Just Around The Hill by Sash!Featuring Tina Cousins (11).

Henry Owens, programme directorat UK rock station Virgin Radio, pre-dicts longevity for Cherry's new sin-gle. "It's a great song-perfect for themodern Virgin Radio sound. It's like-ly to hang around for a long while. The more I listen to Are You StillHaving Fun? the more perfect I thinkit is. I needed some convincing in thebeginning, but now I think it's a realgrower," he concedes.

"My favourite track on the newalbum is Long Way Around, where hesings with his sister Neneh," addsOwens. "I can't wait for it to bereleased. We also playlisted SaveTonight and Falling In Love Again, and they still come up as recurrents."

The son of trumpeter Don Cherryand brother of singer Neneh, Eagle -Eye Cherry continued the family'stradition of musical success when hisdebut single, Save Tonight, went top

10 in more than 20 countries, sellinghalf a million copies in the UK alone, where it reached number one in theairplay charts. Desireless then soldover a million copies in Europe, andone and a half million in the US,where it went platinum.

His debut was recorded on a tightbudget with co -producer Adam Kvi-man. For the follow-up, Cherry keptthe formula the same but added theskills of Red Hot Chilli Peppers andBeastie Boys producer Rick Rubin. The Def Jam founder had approachedthe artist at the Grammys in 1999,and the respect was mutual. "I knewit had to be Rick Rubin. I like thesimplicity of his style and the factthat he likes to record live," confessesEagle -Eye Cherry.

The result is another well-bal-

continued from page 3

anced record, rich inmelody and poten-tial hit singles. "Thelast album was verylaid back andacoustic and I want-ed it to be a startingpoint," explainsCherry. "The finalsong I wrote for itwas Save Tonight, and I could tell fromthat where the nextalbum was going. Iwanted to pick upthe tempo withmore electric gui-tars, but in a waythat still concen-trates on the song. The drums and gui-tars are very simpleso you can hear thetunes. And I feel

this time I understand the art ofsongwriting a lot more," he adds.

In Denmark, Morten Rindholt, music controller at DR P3 (CHR),believes Are You Still Having Fun?indicates a continuation of form fromthe Swedish singer -songwriter. "Welike the song, it suits both our morn-ing and afternoon programming. Weplayed his earlier stuff as well, andfeel Eagle -Eye's material fits perfect-ly with our formatting."

As well as completing his much -awaited second album, Eagle -EyeCherry contributed to Santana'sGrammy -winning Supernaturalalbum and has been working withboth the Dust Brothers and Maximfrom The Prodigy.

Castle finds Sanctuaryby Gordon Masson

LONDON - The UK's SanctuaryGroup has agreed to pay £46 million(euro 77 million) to buy the Britishcatalogue compa-ny Castle Musicfrom investmentcompany RutlandTrust.

Sanctuary hasrecently complet-ed the acquisitionof US rock labelCMC Internation-al from BMG EntertainmentCMC founder Tom Lipsky formillion (euro 7.3 million).

Castle controls the Iron Maidencatalogue for North America, whilstthe band is still managed by Sanctu-ary, which operates a managementcompany, a concert agency, a recordlabel and a recording studio.

Other Castle catalogues includeBlack Sabbath, Motorhead, the SmallFaces and the Kinks.

Rutland acquired Castle in June1998 for £17.8 million (euro 29.7 mil-lion) in a bankruptcy purchase fromAlliance Entertainment Group.

Castle managing director Joe

and£4.4

Cokell says 1999 was a successfulyear. "We had healthy profits, mar-ket sharfe rose sharply across all sec-tors, and we became a global busi-ness group."

The currentroster of CMCincludes materi-al by LynyrdSkynyrd, BlueOyster Cult,Motorhead andLittle Feat, andthe label hasrecently begun

developing new rock acts. The company, which had an oper-

ating loss of US$1.28 million on salesof US$12.15 million in the year toJune 30, 1999 is believed to havebeen majority owned by BMG Enter-tainment, with CMC president Lip-sky holding a minority share. Sanctu-ary will raise the money for the CMCacquisition by issuing more stock.

Lipsky will become president ofSanctuary Records North America, alabel group which comprises CMCand others. CMC will continue to bedistributed by BMG Distribution inthe US. Castle will remain with dis-tributors DNA.

Kiss April fools the German media continued from page 3

had gone so far as to write of a "sen-sation," and quoted Ronald B.Keaton, an alleged officialspokesman of the station's futureowners the Refugees Camp Enter-tainment Holding, who claimed thedeal marked the first time a musicgroup had ever become owners of aradio station.

The Berlin -based daily newspaperTagesspiegel ran another statementfrom Keaton explaining that, next tothe financial aspects of the takeover, there were "sentimental" reasons forthe group's move, since the stationhad helped The Fugees in 1996 withtheir breakthrough in Germany bybeing the first radio station to airtheir songs.

Susanne Grams, spokesperson forthe state's media regulatory body,Medienanstalt Berlin -Brandenburg,was quoted by the paper as sayingthat if the deal went through, theradio regulator might have to reviewthe station's broadcasting licence.

Just two days after the newsbroke, a second announcement fromthe hip -hop and dance station fol-lowed, explaining briefly that theentire story of the take-over wasmerely an "audacious April Fools'joke".

The reactions to the hoax were

summed up by the Berliner Zeitung, whose reporter Christine Dankbarexpressed her frustration about thisyear's crop of April Fools' jokes: "Thisyear most of us reacted with a [dis-approving] head -shake [to the jokes],because they sounded much morecredible than some of the genuinelyserious news these days."

Grams did not appreciate thejoke: "Such a hoax is really hard tofollow and I do not find it funny atall. The station is probably in urgentneed of some PR in their favour."

An official source from the stationexplained that the April Fools' jokewas planned secretly between FrankOtto and Kiss FM's programmedirector Marco Brandt. Station staff, the spokesperson added, had notbeen informed of it.

He also said that the supposedspokesperson from the RefugeesCamp Entertainment Holding wasan American English languageteacher residing in Berlin.

"The whole gig was a PR gagwhich we [the staff] were completelyleft in the dark about. We still havegood contacts [with the Fugees], butI don't think that they had beeninformed personally about the actionand Otto is definitely staying withKiss FM."
