Please make every effort to attend and support our youth!
CRITTERS FOR CHANGE A HUGE SUCCESS! The Critters for Change Hope Chest Col l ec t ion was a huge success. Our goal was to be able to p r o v i d e three goats, two pigs and a flock of chickens to people in need in other countries. Thanks to your generosity, we DOUBLED our goal, raising $1,210.84! This will help many people provide better nutrition and higher incomes from the sale of meat, eggs and milk.
SAVE THE DATE
The annual ECW “Summer Salad Supper” is scheduled for Monday, June 5, at 6:00 p.m. We will be meeting at the church.

Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church The Parish Life - May 2017
ECW NEWS by Abbie Hinton
Thanks to Roxane Rhoads and everyone for their hard work and participation in making the St. Luke’s rummage sale a success.
We shared another beautiful Easter Sunday Brunch! Thank you to Lindsay Wilhite and everyone who helped with the set-up and clean up, and we greatly appreciate everyone who provided the amazing food. The Parish Hall was filled with families celebrating together, a wonderful sight to see. If you have pictures, please share them on ECW Facebook page.
A new church directory is in the works. In the next few weeks, we will be asking everyone to update their information. Please take a look at the current directory and note changes that need to be made (phone numbers, addresses, email addresses). I would like to use email as much as possible for collecting updates to avoid transcribing errors, but we will also use update cards and phone calls. Photographs will be made for all new additions and anyone who would like a retake. This will be scheduled upon having a complete list.
PARISH LIFE by Lindsay Wilhite
Summer is around the corner and there is much activity going on over the next few months. I am looking for people who will host a Saints Alive! this year. If that is you, please contact me and I can give you all the details - there is not much you need to do other than provide the home! I am planning another Buffalo River canoe trip this summer (the SHORT route - ha!) and will be organizing it with Lee and Sabrina Sparks' help this year. We will also have another outing at the Amp sometime this summer and, of course, the Starlight Symphony. Lynn Menendez at First Methodist and Nora Alexander at First Presbyterian and I are in the planning stages of some events to share together and those will be posted as soon as I have the details. Stay tuned for more fun this summer!
Invite someone to church on Sunday!
YOUNG FAMILIES MINISTRIES by Rachel Humphrey
The YFM toy drive for Le Bonheur Children’s Research Hospital was a huge success! They were surprised by the amount of donations; filling a large cart and wagon. The next event for YFM is a family camping trip! This is still in the planning stage, so stay tuned to the St. Luke’s Young Families Ministries Facebook page for more information.
EYC NEWS I can't believe we are at the end of another year! We only have two more Sundays to meet for this school year. This also marks the end of my "reign" as a youth group leader. Todd and I have so enjoyed getting to know all of you guys better! As you know, on Mother's Day, May 14, we will lead another youth Sunday at both services and that will be our last youth event. We killed it last year and I'm hoping this year's will be as good! As a celebration for the years' end and a goodbye to our graduating seniors, we will be going to the Wake's river house at Pickwick on Sunday, May 7. We will leave directly from church and come back that evening. No need to fear Gary's boat driving "skillz," Micah Cruse will be our driver for the day - LOL! I'll post more to our Facebook page closer to time.
Have a great summer! Lindsay and Todd
Thank you for all the help and all of the calls of concern and well wishes after I fractured my arm. It is feeling better and I will begin a little physical therapy soon to complete the healing process. You are all so awesome and caring and I appreciate each and every one of you!

NEWS FROM THE PROPERTY COMMITTEE by Mary Nenarella, Junior Warden
A new sign is being created to replace the one taken down on the side of the parish hall facing Baltimore Street. It will give the times of the services and Sunday school and arrows to direct people to the office as well as the parish hall. Nelson Sign Company has offered to do this for free for our church and we are very grateful to Matt Nelson and his company.
We have contracted with Chris Mayer Roofing to make repairs to the flat roof and also over the area near the children’s church and upper classroom. The leaks have caused damage to the drywall and plaster on the second floor of the church. Once completed, the drywall repairs will begin.
Two new steps have been installed in the choir loft to replace narrow unsafe steps. We also are getting quotes to replace the carpet in the elevator.
We want the church to look great for the upcoming diocesan convention in November so if you see anything that you think needs to be looked into regarding the property, please contact Mary Nenarella at [email protected].
FROM YOUR SENIOR WARDEN by Tricia Odom
At our recent “Vestry Day Apart” current vestry members gathered over lunch and began work putting together a Vestry Covenant of Conduct. This document will outline how we as a group interact, and it offers a framework for managing members’ expectations, preconceptions and anxieties. Working within this framework facilitates our work and relationships with one another. This Covenant helps to build trust and mutual respect that encourages all members to share their gifts and ideas. It will also strengthen our ability to make decisions, and by working together; accomplish great things for St. Luke’s.
Following our work on the Vestry Covenant of Conduct we then moved into discussion of the Ministry of the Vestry by outlining responsibilities of being a Vestry member and expectations of Vestry membership.
The final task of the day was to determine the top three goals for St. Luke’s. Each Vestry member was given the opportunity to write down the goals they see as the most important in the life of St. Luke’s and turn them in. During the break, the goals were combined and ranked according to the number of times mentioned by the group. Many of the goals were the same and shared a common thread. It will take each one of us as members of St. Luke’s working together to accomplish these goals.
In future publications you will hear about our goals and the hopes and dreams we have for the future of St. Luke’s. We invite you to go alongside us as together strive to reach these goals and have our dreams for St. Luke’s come true. Thank you for the opportunity to serve St. Luke’s and thank you for all you do in the life of our Parish.

The work consists of one person helping in the morning to prepare the food and four people midday serving the food and cleaning up afterwards. Our week this June is from June 5 through June 10.
Please sign up in the narthex to serve or contact the parish office at 731-424-0556 or [email protected] and we will sign you up as well!

RIFA NEEDS FOR MAY
The RIFA need for this month is Ramen noodles in individual packages.
SERVANTHOOD by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads
Hands Up! pre-school was founded in 2010 by Donna Agnew. Their first class of 32 3-year-olds began school in September of 2012. Since then they have grown to 64 students--two classes of 3-year-olds and two clas-ses of 4-year-olds--in addition to a small class of 2-year-olds.
The mission of Hands Up! is to pro-vide an active learning environment where children become self-confident, creative, socially well-adjusted and prepared for academic suc-cess, and to empower parents to successfully engage in the lifelong learn-ing process with their child.
The school is in a big time of transition. This is Donna’s last semester as Director, and the Board is hiring a new Executive Director. Additionally, they are planning to build a new building at a new location. They need our support now more than ever. Please remember Hands Up! in your pray-ers, and if you want to volunteer or donate, call 731-431-1979 or look them up on Facebook at @HandsUpJackson.
OUTREACH by Nancy Caterina
Greetings from the Outreach Committee! I bring glad tidings! Our first night hosting Room in the Inn went very well. Susan Francisco, John and Nancy Caterina, Cavalyn Muller and Mary Anne Gucker prepared the evening meal. Mary Nenarella had made her amazing home-made rolls in advance and left them for us in the freezer with instructions. Susan Francisco also made breakfast casseroles for the morning and we prepared brown bag lunches for our guests to take with them the next day. It was a wonderful time of fellowship even before our guests came. We had 5 guests: pleasant, friendly men from the community. We said the blessing and all sat down to eat together. They very much enjoyed dinner and thanked us all for it. Then they settled down to watch a movie. Tommy Rhoads and Glen Rognstad spent the night. Glen said the next day that it had gone very well and said "I'm available in future. Enjoyed my time talking with people. Was very simple to watch movie and then arrange sleeping places.” Tommy’s comments were similar: "The food was GREAT! Thanks, Nancy, for doing the chicken. The guys really, really liked Mary Anne’s sweet potato casserole. And they enjoyed breakfast this morning…..Overall I think it went just fine. When are we going to do it again?”
In answer to Tommy’s question, we are going to do it again soon! I plan to get the list of available dates from ARM and put St. Luke’s on it. I can’t tell you what a good feeling it was to serve that night. It is so simple to do and it means so much to the people who haven’t got a safe place to sleep for the night. Furthermore, there are so many ways to be involved in this ministry. You can cook, you can come eat with us and visit with our guests. You can arrange entertainment: movies, games, whatever. You can prepare breakfast foods to leave in the kitchen to be served the next day. Also, I see this as an opportunity for bonding among church members. For example, a Foyer Group could volunteer for a night and spend the afternoon preparing food together and serving and eating with our overnight guests. The EYC could do it, as could the ECW. Any group of friends could volunteer. Adult Sunday school could take a night as well. I have talked to the Children’s Sunday School teachers regarding making the brown bag lunches for the men and they are very interested- I think this could be a wonderful lesson for the children. After all, we are called to feed the hungry and care for the poor and what better way to do that and to teach it to our children than this ministry? If any of you are thinking that you would love to prepare and serve a meal, but aren’t able to spend the night, please let me know. I can make the arrangements for the overnight volunteers. I challenge all of us to make this part of our mission in the community. It is such a great way to get involved and make a difference and be who Christ has called us to be in the world.
