A given moment at Fermilab might find technicians working overtime to get fixed-target experimental halls ready for beam, Facilities Engineering staff inspecting critical machinery and monitoring construction, and Business Services personnel getting pay- checks out on time. But life at Fermilab also includes a fireman engaged in a medical mission for charity, an accelerator expert displaying unique wood carv- ings in an art exhibit and a physicist/shortstop scooping up a ground ball and tossing it to a cafeteria employee covering second base, who guns the ball to a lab groundskeeper at first for a double play on the Fermilab softball field. These and countless other activities make up the days and nights at the nation’s busiest high-energy physics laboratory. FermiNews reg- ularly chronicles the contributions of staff mem- bers throughout the Laboratory to the mission of research at the energy frontier. This special “Lab Life” edition of FermiNews—the first of a quarterly series—highlights some of the many other events that shape work and after-hours lives of the Fermilab community: special events, award winners, recreational activities and employee contributions within and outside the Lab. On May 17, much of the Fermilab family came together in Wilson Hall’s atrium for a party to celebrate the end of Run I collider operations and the beginning of a new fixed-target run. The occasion brought together Lab employees, users, contractors and others—all the people it takes to run a high-energy physics laboratory. Many at the party said the gathering generated a feeling of unity and common purpose. Lab Life aims to strengthen this sense of community by reporting and recording our common Fermilab family history, as we con- tinue to work together in the quest to understand the funda- mental mysteries of matter and the universe. A study of Fermilab’s waste, potential recyclingcodes and a new vendor spur the recycling subcommittee to intensify its efforts.

employees who like to fatten their trash cans.“The big aim we have is getting people to realize that stuff

like paper and cardboard shouldn’t go into trash cans,” saidWeber, who, along with Moss, is a member of Fermilab’s WasteMinimization Subcommittee.Cardboard, paper and glass areamong Fermilab’s most oftentrashed items that are reusable.

Three years ago Fermilabofficials decided the Laboratorycould better minimize its waste.To start, they appointed theseven-person Waste MinimizationSubcommittee, whose work haspaid off. Through mid-1994, theLaboratory produced approxi-mately 3,500 cubic yards ofgarbage per month. Now theamount has fallen to just lessthan 2,000 cubic yards permonth.

FESS’s management ofdumpster contracts deservessome of the credit, but recyclingformerly discarded items likecardboard has helped as well.Moss and Weber estimateFermilab currently recyclesbetween 30 and 50 percent ofthe paper, cardboard, Styrofoamand glass the Lab uses. Theseefforts save the Laboratory about$50,000 annually, due to receiving a return on recycled goodsand, more important, not paying for unrecycled trash pick-up.

But the committee believes the efforts are not enough. “We’re not very good,” said Weber, an engineer in the

Accelerator Division. “I would say we can recycle at least 50percent more. Some areas and groups are really good, but I dosee a lot of garbage cans with stuff in them that really shouldn’tbe there.”

Mandatory RecyclingBesides saving money, other legal factors could eventually

force Fermilab to intensify its recycling efforts. Moss cited an

executive order from President Clinton mandating that government agencies buy 100 percent recycled products.

Another executive order calls for waste minimization per-formance measures, but exactly how Fermilab’s next contractwith the Department of Energy will treat these rules remainsunclear, Moss said.

Additionally, Kane County recently passed an ordinancestating that any business with more than 10 employees mustrecycle its two largest commodities—paper and cardboard inFermilab’s case. Moss and Weber do not know how strictlythe county plans to enforce the ordinance, but the conse-quences are potentially troublesome.

“What could happen is dump trucks will just refuse totake our garbage if we throw recyclables away,” Weber said.

A New BeginningA new contract for the pick-up of Fermilab’s recycled

goods has energized the subcommittee. “Now that we have a new vendor we are going to try

and get the word out again,” said Moss, environmental pro-tection group leader in theES&H Section. “We have tostart telling people howthey’re supposed to recycle,and what they can and can’trecycle.”

Moss and Weber’s sub-committee, all volunteers,inked the new contract withWeyerhauser Co. in Junewhen the previous contractwith another vendor expired.“With the last contractor thepeople weren’t picking up andthe service wasn’t there,”Moss said.

“We figured they weretaking more than they werepaying us for, there was norecord-keeping and no regularpick-ups...even though thecontract stated these things,”Weber added.

Because of the new con-tract’s recent startup, thecommittee still needs to firmup its logistics.

“A lot of people werecalling us in the past wanting to do things, but we had tokeep putting them off because the vendor wasn’t servicing usvery well,” Moss said. “People who really want to start some-thing up, now’s the time for us to know about it.”

There are currently eight main pick-up sites whereFermilab employees can drop off their cardboard, whitepaper, computer paper, junk mail (including newsprint,phone books and fax paper), glass and Styrofoam. Aluminumcans are also recyclable but different groups are responsiblefor collecting them.

“We hope people out in the Lab will do as much as theycan to help us and help the recycling program,” Moss said. ■

Voluntarism amongFermilab employees is acommon facet of life. Scientistsgive their time to teach studentsand high school teachers abouthigh-energy physics; projectleaders and experimentspokespersons provide tours ofresearch areas, and many mem-bers of the Laboratory’s ownfire department volunteer atlocal area fire houses.

But Russ Wood, a firemanand emergency medical techni-cian at Fermilab, took hisaltruism well outside the FoxValley to reach communities onthe periphery of health care. InFebruary, Wood was a part of a 52-membermedical relief mission—sponsored by two areahospitals and coordinated through a non-profitorganization based in Houston—that set up asmall hospital and health care clinic in Nebaj,Guatemala, a mountain village in a remote areaof the South American country.

The goal of this mission, and those like it,is to treat people in parts of the world that havelittle or no access to health care. The team ofspecialists, which included surgeons, doctors,emergency medical technicians, recovery roompersonnel, dentists and pharmacists, treatedabout 2,200 patients in seven days, performinga variety of medical procedures. The workincluded 60 surgeries for hernias, tumors andother ailments; 200 eye surgeries, includingtreatment of cataracts; and 200 dental proce-dures, among other treatments. The volunteersalso treated numerous people in the makeshiftclinic for malnutrition. Vitamins constituted thelargest number of prescriptions handed out bypharmacists, who distributed nearly 10,000 vit-amins to villagers ranging in age from infancyto more than 80 years old.

incoming patients; he also spent some shiftsassisting in the surgery room and pharmacy.

Woods has been a fireman and EMT in the western suburbs for about 15 years andpresently volunteers at the Glenside FireDepartment. Before transferring to theFermilab fire team six months ago, he workedin the ES&H Section’s hazardous waste divi-sion for five years. The Guatemalan trip was hisfirst relief mission and he said he hopes to par-ticipate again. His motivation for the charitywork was quite simple.

“I wanted to go out and help those thatare less fortunate than us,” said Wood. “It alsoincreased my awareness of how fortunate weare in the States” in terms of health care availability. ■

It’s Thursday morning and, in experi-mental halls at Fermilab, exotic particles zip thisway and that, physicists in their offices jot downequations on chalkboards, and construction crewshoist magnets into place in the Main Injector. But ifit’s Thursday, chances are good that a quiet group inthe Users’ Center is absorbed in a more delicate activity,composing poetry in a foreign language.

The poets are members of an English class that theNational Accelerator Lab Women’s Organization arranges forthe spouses of Fermilab visitors, who may come from France,Japan or another of 20 foreign countries. Jeanette Antoniukleads the lessons; she has a master’s degree in teaching Englishas a second language. NALWO president Selitha Raja said theclasses are the heart of NALWO’s activities. Participation inother programs for spouses and newcomers has come down inthe last few years, she said, but the ESL classes endure becauseNALWO provides an essential resource. As Raja points out,“It’s difficult for a woman with two small kids who doesn’thave a driver’s license and who doesn’t speak English to contact local colleges and find out about English lessons.” Raja added, “We’re lucky to have Jeanette Antoniuk volunteering her services.”

Antoniuk has under her belt what might be the ultimateESL teaching experience. “I’ve spent three summers inChengdu, China, teaching English to Chinese teachers of

English,” she said matter-of-factly. She doesn’t have

any trouble holding the atten-tion of the Fermilab students.

“I try to make it as varied as pos-sible,” she said. “We play games, we

sing, we work in small groups or as aclass.” Haikus—three-line verses with five,

seven and five syllables each—are part of thechallenge. The hour from 9 to 10 a.m. is for “the real begin-ners,” but the students often stay on for the next two hours.Antoniuk notes that her pupils are “all at different levels, butthey pick up from each other.”

At the NALWO coffee hour that coincides with theEnglish class break, Raja reflected on the organization’s mis-sion and future. “More families used to live in the [Fermilab]Village. That gave us more of a community,” she said. “Morewomen in the past could afford not to work. Now most, ifthey have even a little free time, try to get some income.”

Raja said lower participation means that the days ofNALWO’s “huge” cooking demonstrations are past; the groupstill does organize some fun outings, however. NALWOrecently sponsored a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s studio andvisited Navy Pier in Chicago. Raja brightened as she remem-bered: “The fixed-target program brings in more people; thenumbers should pick up a little now.” ■

“Stress is a problem that people always seeminterested in hearing about,” observes BernieDugan, chairwoman of Fermilab’s WellnessWorks Committee, an organization devoted topromoting employee health and well-being. Asthey do each year after the Health Fair, Duganand her colleagues are choosing the topics theywill invite speakers to cover in the fall seminars.Stress management classes are among the morepopular programs that Wellness Works has orga-nized, and will likely return. Employees alsoshowed strong interest in the recent seminar ondepression, Dugan said. Mae Strobel, who hashelped run the committee for about four years,says employees often request information relatedto nutrition and heart ailments.

Like the Engineering Seminar series, theWellness Works activities survive without a budget.“Physicians that Fermilab uses have come to givepresentations, and we get people in the lab to volunteer,” said Strobel. One such Lab volunteer,Greg Wojciechowski in the legal office, has spokenabout personal bankruptcy. Committee membersinclude Fermilab physician Dr. David Morrison,and Karin Etter, Jean Guyer, Merle Haldeman,Audrey Hopper, Maureen Huey, Karen Murphy,John Roof and Sharon Strecker.

The Wellness Committee has broad objec-tives, including those of promoting a healthylifestyle, educating employees to be wise con-sumers of medical care, and encouragingemployees and visitors to use existing Fermilabresources for good health. The committee’s mostambitious effort toward accomplishing these goalsis organizing the annual health fair, which tookplace June 12. Dugan said the hospitals attendingthe fair are usually the same from year to year, butthat she tries to add some variety in the smallerparticipants: “We try to change the clinics anddemonstrations. This year we had a number ofactive demonstrations like tai chi, massage,biofeedback and yoga.” Over one hundredemployees checked their blood pressure, and 60took advantage of glaucoma screening.Organizing the health fair “was a lot of fun todo,” said Dugan, adding, “I’d like to thank allthe employees who helped.” ■

When you think of Fermilaband its mostly technical cast ofemployees, a clear associationwith art rarely comes to mind.But a recent exhibit at theLaboratory suggests you prob-ably should think again.

For the entire month ofJune, Wilson Hall’s second-floorcrossover housed the biennialFermilab Employee Art andCrafts Exhibit. According toJanet MacKay, gallery manager,all Fermilab employees, users,graduate students, contractorsand their families were eligibleto submit their work to theshow.

The Exhibits Committee setup this year’s unjuried show, along-standing Fermilab tradi-tion. This year’s exhibit show-cased 82 pieces.

“We had a great responsethis year,” MacKay said. “Therewas some really excellent workin this year’s show.” She addedthat “anything goes” as far asthe types of work that are pre-sentable. This year’s art formsincluded weavings, rug hook-ings, photography, paintings,jewelry, pottery and wood-carvings.

Why have a show when theoverall mission of theLaboratory is the exploration ofthe subatomic realm? “Becausethere’s a lot of talent out there,and it gives Fermilab employeesan opportunity to show theirstuff, and to show another sideof themselves other than theirwork side,” MacKay answered.

So wet your brushes, dustoff the loom or start spinningyour pottery wheel. It’s not tooearly to prepare for the 1998exhibit.

Fermilab BarnstormersThe Fermilab Barnstormers love to fly, and

it shows. The radio-control model club servesto foster interest in the building and operationof all types of radio-controlled flying models.The club promotes these interests through itsDelta Dart Night, radio-control flying demon-strations at the Fermilab Flying Picnic and theirquarterly fun-fly events. During March’s DeltaDart Night for example, 25 children competedin building, trimming and flying their models.The three longest flight times lasted more than28 seconds. Begun in the early 1970s, thegroup now has 45 members and a charter withthe Academy of Model Aeronautics. AllFermilab, URA and DOE employees and usersare welcome to join. Amateur Radio ClubRadio wavelengths don’t excite most high-

energy physicists, who generally prefer shorterwavelength, higher-energy waves—but excep-tions exist. One such exception is the AmateurRadio Club, a group that promotes interest inamateur radio, fosters activity in amateur fre-quencies, and provides communications duringemergencies. The club operates an amateurradio station, WB9IKJ, on the 80-meterthrough 10-meter bands from site 50, and a

Climbing Mount Everest: Thestair “well” exercise program.

Congratulations to all who completed the“Climb Mt. Everest” fitness incentive program.The Recreation Office developed the programand Wellness Works sponsored it. FromFebruary 1 through April 30, 1996, partici-pants logged either 216 flights of stairs for thelow level or 432 flights of stairs for the highlevel to complete the program.

We Tackled the TowerOn April 20th, Fermilab’s “Bottom to Top

Quarks” team competed with 15 other corpo-rate teams in a race to the top of the 32-storyOakbrook Terrace Tower in an event called“Tackle the Tower,” an annual fund-raisersponsored by the American Lung Associationof DuPage and McHenry Counties. Teamtimes were determined by taking the average ofthe five fastest team members. The Bottom toTop Quarks team took first place in the teamcompetiton with an average of 3 minutes and45 seconds.

Winter Basketball LeagueIt was another exciting season on the Fermilabbasketball courts. Al Sondgeroth’s team, WideOpen I, walked away with the playoff champi-onship, but not without a battle. The final gamewith Wide Open II was won by only one point. The final season standings and records:
