EditorialThe last two issues of Sikaran Taliba were dedicated to the Second Annual Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philip-pines Gathering and Workshop leading to the acceptance of new members and promotion to Black Belts of the new members. This issue is dedicated to the personal vacation of Jaime Geronimo, more as a bakasiyoni-sta than Executive Vice-President and Chief Instructor of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. It will not be easy to separate Jimmy’s “vacation” and Master Jimmy’s “official mission,” however, we will try to balance it evenly. Master Jaime Geronimo’s official trip was planned and financed by the United States of America Regional Chapter. His vacation schedule and his sightseeing trips are all courtesy of his mga ka-maganak and his friends.

Promotional Trip From Baras to the United States By: Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.

On Friday, June 21, 2013, Master Jaime Geronimo of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines took a leave of ab-sence as Executive Vice-President and Chief Instructor to witness the growth of Sikaran in the United States. This is the first time that he visited the United States. He was invited by the United States Execu-tive Council of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines to attend the Second Sikaran Annual Gathering and Workshop, hosted by Mantas Louelle Lledo, Jr., State Director for New Jersey and Man-tas Andy Sanano, Jr., State Director for Florida. The United States Executive Council is com-posed of Mantas Meliton Geronimo, Jr., WSBP International Vice-President; Mantas Henry Bio, United States of America Regional Chapter Director; Man-tas Danny Chu, California State Director, Mantas Louelle Lledo, Jr., New Jersey State Director; Mantas Andy Sanano, Jr., Florida State Di-rector; Mantas Rommel Guiveses, New York Interim State Director; Mantas Elpidio Seletaria, Jr., In-

ternational Coordinator; Mantas Moreno Villanueva, Northern Cali-fornia District Director; Mantas Romeo Lladone, Central Califor-nia District Director; and Mantas Emmanuel Querubin, Executive Technical Assistant to Grandmas-ter Meliton Geronimo.

First on the agenda of Master Jaime Geronimo was to visit his daughter he has not seen for years and grandson whom he has not seen yet. When his other relatives learned that, he is in town they all wanted to meet with him but he explained that he will be busy for the Second Annual Sikaran Gath-ering and Workshop to be held in

New Jersey. He further explained that he will have more time after the event in New Jersey. A heavy sightseeing schedule was drawn up by his nieces, nephews, cousins and other Baraseños, who were ex-cited to show Jimmy around. In

fact, Jimmy was slated to be the Guest of Honor during the celebration of the Baras Town Fiesta, which was held on July 6 at the City of Fremont Town Plaza. On Friday, 28 June 2013, Master Jaime Geronimo took the flight to Philadel-phia with Mantas Elpidio Seletaria, Jr., Mantas Em-manuel Querubin, and his wife Gloria. Due to the time change, the flight seemed longer than it was. They took a shuttle to the desig-nated hotel at Mount Laurel

in New Jersey. Awaiting their arrival were the other officials of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philip-pines including Mantas Tom Sulit from Alberta, Canada, and the candidates for membership and promotion, and Michael Queru-bin, publisher of FMAPulse.Com. The presence of Master Jaime Geronimo in this gathering

was heralded as the gravy that made the event “not only deli-cious but also nutritious.” As Bruce Kulpaca from Utah said: “When face to face with historical figures such as Master Jaime Geronimo, you become humbled by your

own place in history; such an opportunity allowed us to place in context the development of the particular martial art with our own experience. I really believe I am a better martial artist because I feel a direct link with the past

through the introductions made at this event.” By all accounts, so far the Second Annual Sikaran Gathering and Workshop is the most suc-cessful and memorable yet. Based on all the positive

reviews by those who witnessed the Second Annual Sikaran Gath-ering and Workshop, it was a huge success. The last two issues of the Sikaran Taliba carried a blow-by-blow account of the event.

After the event in New Jersey, Meliton Geronimo, Jr., picked up Jimmy Geronimo and his party from the San Francisco Airport. They had a late dinner at the home of Emmanuel Queru-

bin, where Meliton, Jr. was briefed on the gathering and workshop. It was almost two in the morning when Meliton, Jr., Jimmy Geronimo, and Elpidio Seletaria left for Vallejo, home of Meliton,

Next Stop Southern California

Mixing business with pleasure, Jimmy’s niece drove him to Southern California to see his other rela-tives. While sightseeing and visiting the tourist spots in Southern California, Master Jaime Geronimo, took the time to see the state of affairs of Sikaran in Los Angeles. He visited with Henry Bio, USA Regional Director of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines Highlight of Jimmy’s visit to Southern California is the establishment of several Sikaran schools com-posed of relatives, friends and kababayan who are now concentrated in Los Angeles area. Henry Bio, will hold a gathering, seminar , and train instructors for the Southern California chapter. While in that part of the State, Jimmy was taken to the different tourist spots, including Las Vegas where he tried his luck in the casinos. On July 27, 2013, Jimmy was accompanied by Elpidio Seletaria, Jr. to Fresno to meet up with Moreno Villanueva and Romeo Lladone of the Black Rangers Sikaran School of Central California.

Last Stop Fresno, Central California

Originally billed as Central California Gathering and Workshop, the abbreviated trip of Master Jimmy Geron-imo to Fresno was “downgraded” to a Goodwill Visit. Several of the Mantas who were supposed to attend were not able to come. USA Regional Chapter Director Henry Bio and California State Director Danny Chu were both tied up in their work and begged to be excused. Mantas Meliton Geronimo, Jr., extended his apol-ogies for cancelling at the last minute. At about five in the afternoon of Friday, July 26, 2013, his wife Raquel went into labor about 20 days early. At eight twenty-six, she gave birth to a healthy 7 pounds baby (Zach

Ramsey Geronimo). However, she experienced unusual bleeding and her husband Meliton,Jr. opted to stay and be with her. Mantas Em-manuel Querubin was also excused due to a medical appointment. Only Master Jaime Geronimo and Mantas Elpidio Seletaria, Jr., were able to come. They left the Bay Area at about five in the morning.

Sikaran Golden Jubilee

On November 6. 2016, The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines will celebrate its golden anniversary. It was on November 6, 1966 when the Asian Karate Association, composed of Japan, Korea, China and the Phillipines recognized Sikaran as a distinct unarmed fighting art of Filipino origin and named Meliton Geronimo as Grandmaster with the rank of 10th Degree Red Belt. This jubilee will be marked by festivities worthy of this grand event. The First Sikaran Hall of Fame will be held in conjunction with the Golden Anniversary. In 1966, the original plan was to invite the Grandmasters who were invovled in the recognition of Sikaran as a distinct fighting art from the Philippines on its 50th Anniversary. But this will not be so. Grandmasters from Japan, Kyojiro Furusawa and Koichi Kondo have passed away. Grandmasters Dr. Kwai Byeung Yun of Ji Do Kwan Kong Soo Doo, and Hwang Kee of Moo Doo Kwan Tang Soo Doo of Korea have likewise passed away. With the dissolution of the Asian Karate Association in 1970, we have lost contact with Chinese Grandmaster Chua Tiong Ki, but there were uncomfirmed reports that he to passed away. Only Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo is still alive, albeit at 86th years old, he is suffering from the ill effects of several bouts with stroke. From the early beginnings of Sikaran in the Philippines, it has now spread its wings in the four corners of the world. The golden jubilee is still 3 years away but preparations are now being taken to insure that it will be the greatest event in Sikaran until Novermber 6, 2066, when Sikaran celebrates its centennial or diamond anniversary.
