A high-level Egyptian delegation led by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab

briefed Executive Directors of the African Development Bank Group on Friday, March 20 in Abidjan, urging support to the government’s ongoing economic reforms and to its ambitious development and investment programme.

Opening the discussions, Prime Minister Mahlab said that the aim of the visit was to reinforce the long-standing relations between the Bank and Egypt, which, he said, have made huge positive impacts in the country.

“There is no way we could have visited Côte d’Ivoire without calling on you because the Bank has done great things for Egypt and Africa,” he said, adding that projects financed by the Bank especially in the areas of energy, water and irrigation have improved living conditions for people in all segments of Egyptian society.

Egypt is the AfDB’s second-largest African shareholder accounting for 5.4% of its regional member countries’ share capital and ranks fourth among the Bank’s 69 global country membership. It

is also the Bank’s biggest client, having received US $5.64 billion in project and programme loan approvals from 1974 to 2015.

According to the Prime Minister, this exemplary relationship explains why Egypt is urging the Bank to “double” its funding to enable the country accomplish its ambitious economic and investment programmes.

AfDB supported and participated from March 13-15 in the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC) in Sharm el-Sheikh, which served as the launch pad for the country’s economic and investment programme, which purveys a new Egyptian model designed to deliver democratic governance, high economic growth and robust social benefits.

Sharm el-Sheikh’s key message is that Egypt is back in business, striving hard to reposition itself on the global investment map through law reforms to speed up investments in all economic and social sectors, notably agriculture, education, mining, micro-finance and capital markets.

At the gathering (which

received up to US $60 billion in support pledges), the Government advertised a number of projects, including a plan to develop industrial zones around the Suez Canal. A new capital would be built to the southeast of Cairo, to relieve congestion in the mega-city of some 18 million people.

The Egyptian delegation made a good case for the Bank’s involvement in these projects, which, they said, would promote inclusive economic development and help to strengthen Egypt as a regional force and a bulwark against Islamic militancy.

AfDB support would be most helpful in the country’s efforts to devote more resources to the social and private sectors as well as in facilitating trade with other African countries.

After fielding questions from Executive Directors, Board Dean Shahid Khan thanked the delegation, noting that the visit was a clear indication of Egypt’s unwavering support to the Bank, in its contribution to the African Development Fund as well as its involvement in the Bank’s policy debate.

“We are comforted by your focus on social well-being. It is in line with the Bank’s Ten Year Strategy focus on inclusive growth,” he added.

Key members of the 15-member delegation included the Ministers of Housing and Urban Community Services, Mostafa Madbouly; International Cooperation, Naglaa El-Ahwany; and Deputy Foreign and African Affairs Minister, Sabry Magdy.

Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan sign Nile River dealThe Heads of State and Government of Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan have signed an agreement on the sharing of the River Nile waters.

The deal, signed on Monday in Khartoum, is on the basis of the operations of Ethiopia’s controversial Grand Renaissance Dam. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir held negotiations in Khartoum to end the more than two years of dispute between the three countries.

Mr Hailemariam confirmed that the historic agreement would pave the way for more cooperation between the three countries.

“The Ethiopian government is committed to the welfare of the three countries and we assure the Egyptians that we will not cause any harm to them,” Mr Hailemariam said. President Sisi said the three countries could overcome their differences through constructive talks. He called on the tripartite technical committee to complete its work to finalise the talks on the dam. “We have the same fate in the three countries, we want this agreement to be implemented, we need this agreement to be a gentlemen’s agreement,”

President Sisi said. President Bashir described the signing of the agreement as historic.

“We call on all the Nile basin countries to be committed to developing mutual cooperation among the three countries,” President Bashir urged.

“I hope this agreement will be the first step toward solving all the problems between the Nile Basin countries,” he added.

Egypt greatly fears the Grand Renaissance Dam project could diminish its water supply.

Google and a group of technology volunteers have developed a tablet device that could help doctors in the fight against Ebola. According to the developers, the tablet has been designed in such a way that it can survive being doused in chlorine; be used while wearing gloves; and is resistant to storms as well as high humidity.

According to BBC.com, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) had put out a call for an Ebola-proof tablet to help teams record vital patient information. According to the report, the need for the Ebola-proof tablet had arisen when doctors began to shout patient notes across fences in order to avoid contamination.

According to Médecins Sans Frontières, Ebola is passed on through contact with body fluids, and even a single piece of paper leaving a high-risk zone poses a risk of passing on the infection. Additionally, health-care workers caring for patients have to wear full protective suits with goggles

Nigeria is frequently bring up as the Giant of Africa due to its large population

and economy. With about 174 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh-most populous country in the world. The country is populated by over 500 ethnic groups, of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Regarding religion, Nigeria is roughly divided in half between Christians, who live mostly in the southern and central parts of the country, and Muslims, focussed typically in the northern and south-western regions.

Nigeria is situated in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. Truly Inspiring

Other agricultural products include sorghum, millet, maize (corn), yams and cassava. All of these are previously used as subsistence foods by farmers but are now widely sold for cash.

The country ranks twenty fifth worldwide and first in Africa in farm output. Majority of Nigeria's food production comes from small scale farmers using basic agricultural equipment. The government has recently put considerable amounts of money into refining farming through investment into rural

infrastructure and irrigation projects and by presenting modern agricultural chemicals.

Driving InnovationNigeria is opulent in natural

resources, particularly in case of hydrocarbons. In international ranking Nigeria holds the 10th oil producer and the 3rd largest oil producer in Africa. The Nigerian economy is mainly reliant on its oil sector which supplies 95% of its foreign exchange earnings.

Regardless of the problems allied with the ethnic uneasiness and the border disputes and government funding problems, the resource Nigeria has in the oil sector makes it into one of the most attractive destination for many oil-multinationals.

The petroleum industry of Nigeria is controlled by the

Ministry of Petroleum Resources. The government retains close control over the industry and in the activities of the NNPC, whose senior executives are appointed by the ruling government.

The Latest Entry Textiles have been shaped

in Nigeria by the traditional methods now for several years, but the industrial action used in the production of textile is reasonably much more recent. The textile industry of Nigeria is labor intensive, it is projected that the sector affords employment to around 150,000 Nigerians, excluding the thousands who are directly employed in the cottage sector of the industry.

The major textile enterprises in Nigeria are positioned around Lagos which has the majority of the country's spinning mills and weaving mills. Other noteworthy textile operations are located around Kano and Kaduna.

Keeping the FaithThe mining of minerals scores

for only 0.3% of its GDP. The mining industry is unfledged thus Nigeria needs to import minerals which it could mine locally. The ownership privileges for the exploring, mining and selling of mineral resources are held by the Nigerian government.

The mineral resources of Nigeria embrace coal, iron, gold, uranium and tantalum.

The coal resources are disseminated over fifteen states.

The Nigerian Coal Corporation is one accountable for most of the coalmines present in the region. The coal section of the Nigerian economy is slowly being privatized.

Iron ore is largely mined at the Itakpe which has an annual capacity of 5.5Mt per year. The state owned National Iron Ore

Company functions in this region. Western region of Nigeria is

well-known for the gold deposits, the sites for mining are Maru, Anka, Malele, Tsohon Birnin Gwari-Kwaga, Gurmana, Bin Yauri, Okolom-Dogondaji, and Iperindo in Kwara State. Uranium is found in 6 of the 36 states in Nigeria.

Schneider releases survey on counterfeit electrical products in AfricaSchneider Electric, the world specialist in energy management, releases the first survey on electrical counterfeiting products ever conveyed in Africa.

The survey took place in eleven African countries: Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda. More than 500 “high level” officials and professionals were contacted by 37 African trained investigators. They answered a total of 8.185 questions.

“For the first time, all stakeholders

of the African electrical market will be able to move forward, based on a solid picture of reality”, says Tracy Garner, Anti-Counterfeiting Global Manager.

Based on the results, the first conclusion is that counterfeiting of most common electrical products is widely spread in all African countries, representing 40% to 80% of their markets. Cables, breakers, sockets, switches and extension cords, are the five most counterfeit electrical products (in that order). China remains the main source of

electrical counterfeit goods entering the continent (75% of the answers) followed by the rest of Asian countries. Locally manufactured counterfeits originate mostly from Tanzania, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.

“Now, having measured the impact of counterfeits on African economies and users’ safety, the urgency to act is real. Schneider Electric is committed to do its best in answering professionals’ demands and expectations expressed in the survey”, concludes Tracy.

The significance of leveraging technology to shape employable skills for youth to prepare them for a stronger future and career is actually the

need of the hour in Africa. Microsoft has been doing business in Africa for 20 years. They have 22 offices in 19 cities across 14 countries - out of the 54 in the continent of Africa. Microsoft technology is applied in over 98 percent of schools worldwide. The company’s end-to-end education solutions solve educators’ most persistent challenges while refining learning outcomes for students around the world.

The 4Afrika Initiative of Microsoft concentrates on three critical areas of expansion for the continent

- World-class skills, access and innovation. Each of these focuses on different features that will help empower African youth, entrepreneurs, developers and business and civic leaders to turn great notions into authenticity that can aid their community, their country, the continent, and beyond.

The tech industry in Nigeria wasn’t sufficiently informed and was not well equipped for the end of support for Windows XP operating system, Microsoft has admitted. Microsoft 4Afrika launched its CloudPreneur initiative in Nigeria, looking to empower 1,000 early-stage startups in becoming cloud resellers.

World-Class Skills is about Microsoft’s plans to formulate a self-sustaining, world-class education podium, both online and offline, to help Africans develop skills for entrepreneurship and enriched employability and competitiveness. As part of this, they have established the Afrika Academy, which is planned to benefit recent higher education graduates, government leaders and the Microsoft partner community. Their attempts in the Academy will rely heavily on partners, including African universities, research institutions and others.

African region. Today more than ever, these women have confidence in themselves and an aspiration for freedom and equal rights. Microsoft saw an occasion to help these women through economic empowerment as they work to comprehend gender equality, recover social conditions and attain and uphold political rights.

Microsoft anticipates to launch a portal targeted at North African women in March as an offshoot of theMasrWorks IT skills portal. This is designed to empower young women to play a leadership role in their communities, shape their skills and self-esteem and present new models for self-employment. It will eventually afford IT skills training and also softer skills training on topics including leadership, self-confidence and interviewing, as well as the mentorship needed to build a long-term career in technology. The mentorship will be provided via a sustained engagement between Microsoft, partners, a local NGO, and the beneficiaries to support them in career building and to strategize their role in society as female leaders.

The portal targets to reach 25,000 Egyptian women in the first year with the goal of helping 40% of those women improve their economic and societal position.

Further, to develop technology access, Microsoft proclaimed the placement of a pilot project with the Kenyan Ministry of Information and Communications and Kenyan Internet Service Provider, Indigo Telecom Ltd., to deliver low-cost, high-speed wireless broadband and create new opportunities for commerce, education, healthcare, and delivery of government services across Kenya. The deployment is called ‘Mawingu’, which is Kiswahili for cloud. Many Zambian farmers struggle to get access to finance in order to grow

and expand their businesses. At the upcoming Agritech Expo at GART in Chisamba from 16-18 April, local agri experts will be on hand with free financial advice that is specifically geared towards to the agricultural sector and meeting Zambian challenges. More than 10 000 people are again expected to descend on the centre of agriculture in Zambia next month following the successful launch of the event last year.

Agritech Expo is a business-to-business platform for agricultural professionals, from small scale farmers to commercial enterprises, to engage and conduct business with some of the world’s leading suppliers to the agricultural industry. From live crop trials to machinery demonstrations, the event services the needs of the entire agri-value chain in Zambia and the region.

“Lack of security for farmers to borrow”

The expo in Chisamba also offers a range of free, technical and practical workshops on 17 and 18 April to assist small, emerging and commercial farmers

in various sectors of agriculture, from using the latest technologies, to improving their productive capacity to accessing the necessary finance to grow and expand.

Mr Bruce Dick, Managing Director of Zanaco (Zambia National Commercial Bank) sees as some of the main challenges for the country’s agricultural sector

“the lack of security (titled land) to enable farmers to borrow and the lack of financing for Capex and working capital purposes.” Zanaco is the diamond sponsor for Agritech Expo and will provide a free talk on finance for emergent and small holder farmers at the event.

Says Mr Dick: “in living our mandate of financially including the unbanked bankable people in rural and urban Zambia, we are committed to continuously invest in innovative but affordable products and services. We are also committed to enhancing our distribution touch points through which we reach our customers.”

Zanaco recently launched two innovative products aimed at empowering farmers in Zambia. Mr Bruce Dick explains: “the first one was the ‘Loan A Cow’ facility which helps dairy farmers acquire

milk producing cows without using conventional collateral as we know it and the other one was the mechanization facility which help farmers purchase farming equipment from John Deere. These are our partners and are one of the leading suppliers of farming equipment.”

“Financing solutions should be flexible”

“Agriculture in Zambia is showing great signs of growing” says Antois van der Westhuizen, Head of Retail at John Deere Financial and another speaker at Agritech Expo in Chisamba.

He continues: “the potential exists to make Zambia a food basket for the rest of Central and Eastern Africa. There are signs of excellence with the latest technology being employed and mechanization being used as a method of increasing efficiency and yield. There are challenges, however, which can be met by using appropriate financing tools. Financing solutions should be flexible and made to fit the needs of the farmers while still maintaining proper risk management principals. In order to accomplish this we need to break away from traditional lending products and

Share some of your experiences from the successful years of the company. How has been your journey till date?

Kempstone Media’s primary focus is on Africa. It has been exciting to witness and be part of the continent’s development in recent years. Its social and economic landscape is evolving bringing with it a multitude of opportunities. We are very upbeat about Africa’s future prospects and look forward to launching more events and publications.

Africa is experiencing the highest urban growth and the most rapid rate of urbanization. Comment.

In the last 20 years Africa has experienced the highest Urban growth rates in the world. Over 56% of the continents citizens currently live in cities and by 2050 this figure is expected to rise to 16%. The social, economic and environmental implications of this will be enormous. It is therefore imperative that government’s act now to put in

place the necessary measures that will ensure the provision of sustainable and accessible infrastructure and services for the continent’s urban dwellers.

In the time of sustainable development, what importance does easy and accessible transport system holds?

The ability to move goods and people effectively and efficiently is at the heart

of all successful economies. Traffic gridlock and crippling congestion are already major problems impacting on productivity and competitiveness across Africa. The importance of well planned, well developed and well maintained urban transport systems cannot be overestimated.

Do you think this event will bring in investments for building of transport infrastructure in Africa?

Urban Mobility Africa is the first direct business meeting dedicated to the sustainable development and deployment of urban transportation systems in Africa. The challenges are immense but so are the investment opportunities. Global and regional businesses are already tapping into this and we are beginning to see an increase in investments driven by urban transport developments.

Africa’s growing need for sustainable transport systems is a major concern, what initiatives or steps do you think are required to deal with this issue?

It is crucial that governments create an enabling environment for private sector participation, as most countries do not have the capacity to bridge the annual funding deficit that is roughly $48 billion. Putting in place appropriate policy, legal and regulatory frameworks is an essential element for attracting private investors and accelerating the development of public transport systems.

In the last 20 years Africa has experienced the highest Urban growth rates in the world. Africa recognizes the reputation of sustainable use and management of the environment in the fight against poverty and food insecurity. In literal terms, sustainable development means that economic development integrates concerns about the people of region and the environment that many depend upon for their livelihoods. In an exclusive interview with Sylvia Powell, Managing Director highlighted the important role, Kempstone Media is playing in the urbanization of the whole continent.
