Bowie & Jagger still rule the EuropeanAir la Top 50, but Stevie Wonder'sPart Time Lover is on s v e topand the single moves from 4 to no. 2 thisweek. More about Stevie and his remark-able long-awaited album In Square Circleon page 21, the Album Tip page. Most ofthe changes on the European airwavestake place outside the Top 10. Sandra'sMaria Magdalena has a long chart historyand the airplay on this Europroduction isstill increasing with a lot of German andBenelux stations adding it to their play -lists.

The second Boys And Girls trackDon't Stop The Dance is a very success-ful one' for Bryan Ferry. The single getsheavy coverage in the UK, Germany andSouthern Europe and moves from 18 to13.

Sting has both of his singles chartedone after the other; while Wave movesfrom 24 to 16, Free jumps straight at 17

(from 28). The other prime airplay moversinclude Lloyd Cole, Cliff Richard,Bonnie Tyler, and The Cars (suddenlypicking up strong airplay in the Benelux. The amount of tips we received on DianaRoss latest high-tech disco single EatenAlive is enormous and she is this weeks3rd best entry after Bananarama (Do NotDisturb) and French singer Laurent Vou-Izy (Les Nuits Sans Kim Wilde).

THE PEARSON FAMILYOne of the most successful new disco -acts of this year, the Pearson- familya.k.a. Five Star, have two popular singlescharted in Europe at the moment. Whilethe UK is making a hit out of Love TakeOver (a track written and produced by thetwo members of the Dutch band TheLimit, Bemard Oattes and Rob vanSchaik; remix comes from Paul Hardcas-tle) Continental Europe is still going withthe second single Let Me Be The One.The successes of e.g. Five Star, Princess,Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, The Coolnotes andMai Tai clearly show the growing import-ance of pop -polished disco products infavour of the more funky and rough discoapproach.

The highest entry in The European

Top 100 Singles is John Parr's St. El-mo's Fire, new at 20 (Angel at 16 is a re-entry).

ELLE ADORE LE NOIRAfter Philip Bailey the other Earth, Wind &Fire frontman Maurice White comes upwith a solo single. We doubt if it willbecome just as successful as Easy Lover, but his cover of the classic Ben E. Kingsong Stand By Me, is enwrapped in agood and groovy pop production alongwith some new arrangements of thesong. Another recommendation to add toyour playlist is Debbie Bonham's singleSanctuary (Carrere).' Debbie is the sisterof Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonhamwho died five years ago. Pete Townsend, wrote the new single for Roger Daltrey,After The Fire, his latest solo -outing for hisnew label partner 10/Virgin.

Moving over to the Europroductionsof this week the obvious choices are Bal-timora's Woody Boogie and Falco's Vie-nna Calling. But from Belgium comes theexciting single Elle Adore Le Noir (SheLoves Black) from TC Matic, Belgian'sbest pop group; a beautiful romantic tan-go with the impressing vocals of ArnoHintjes.

UNITED KINGDOMWhile Bowie & Jagger and StevieWonder remain best played singles inthe UK, Huey Lewis, to Sire -act RedBox (Lean On Me), Lloyd Cole andBananarama are this weeks primemovers on airplay level. The Club/Phonogram act Cameo stands a fairchance to be a major addition to thefirst 20 best played singles next week,as do Five Star (iLove Take Over; in

the Benelux Let Me Be The One is afavourite), Madonna (Angel; on theContinent Groove is still the hot addi-tion), Glenn & Claudia (Heaven 17

teaming up with Propaganda -singerClaudia Bruecken), Bobby Womack (IWish He Wouldn't Trust Me So Much),Billy Paul (Sexual Therapy) and StyleCouncil's latest The Lodgers.

Following our spotlight on Madon-na, the UK brings the re- releasedAngel straight in at 10 and TheDamned follow much later at 39 withIs It A Dream (MCA). Other entries forDead Or Alive (My Heart Goes Bang -new at 41), The Cure's latest Close ToMe (44) and Gary Numan (Call OutThe Boys).

4 new singles in the UK Top 10:Marillion's Lavender (5- 13), AmiiStewart (7-12), Midge Ure (If I Was inits 2nd week up to 9) and Mai Tai(Body And Soul).

GERMANYThe best played single in Germany stillis Tina's Hero but the difference withBowie & Jagger is very small. Themajor additions on the German air-waves this week include Stevie Won-der's Part Time- Lover and Germansinger Ulla Meinecke with Heisser

Draht. Good contenders for next weekentry in the 20 best played singles inGermany include the new single of Ita-lian singer Alice (Prospettiva Nevski),Cliff Richard's She Is So Beautiful andthe Commodores latest Janet. ThreeGerman local artists also have strongchances to enter the German playlists;veteran rocker Udo Lindenberg withMoskau, the American born (but livingin Germany) Jennifer Rush with Des-

*, tiny (her Power Of Love single is quitepopular in the U.K. and is still charted)and Modern Talking's Cheri CheriLady.

Chartwise Kate Bush, LeeMarrow, Modern Talking, UB40, LianRoss (Fantasy on Zyx), Baltimora(Woody Boogie) and Heart (What Ab-out Love) are the significant movers. Asurprisingly high entry for rocker John

Parr: his St. Elmo's Fire is new at 19!Other entries for Propaganda(Machinery), and Princess.

FRANCEThe major changes on retail level in-clude Modern Talking's You Can WinIf You Want and, although in the lowerregions, Kool & The Gang's Cherish.

The hegemony of Jean -JacquesGoldman continues both on AM andFM stations, one of France's best play-ed singles of '85. The new JohnnyHalliday(Rock 'n' Roll Attitude) is thisweeks prime mover on the AM stationsand the new single of Yves SimonAbyssinie is the major French additionon AM. Other new French recordspicking up airplay this week includeDavid Coven (Afrique), ElizabethAnais (Intimidate), Vivien Savage(C'Est Que Le Vent) and Century'sLover Why.

On FM level Madonna still is theruler of the airwaves, followed by Lau-rent Voulzy with his tribute to KimWilde, Les Nuits Sans Kim Wilde. TheCure (In Between Days), Diana Ross,Tears For Fears (Everybody) andModern Talking's You Can Win arethe international productions added tothe FM playlists this week.

HOLLANDIt seems like the Madonna mania onlyjust started in Holland; Like A Virginreplaces Sting solo album at thenumber one spot. The Cure's TheHead On The Door is new in the top 10(from 15) and the popular Dutch singerKoos Albers debutes at 26 with hisnew album on CNR. Yet two otherBenelux productions follow on theheels of Koos Albers as new entries inthe album charts: George BakerSelection new at 35, (the single SantaLucia By Night has crossed over toGermany and is currently at 44) andthe Belgian band TC Matic have theirnew album Ye Ye (on EMI) new at 59.One album likely to enter the Dutchalbum charts next week is DianaRoss' latest Eaten Alive.

While the charity single Drive byThe Cars is going down in the Englishcharts (13-6), the single has just beenre-released in the Benelux and is al-ready 3rd best played single.

SPAINThe Spanish Superventas chart is stilltaken by Opus Life is Life followed by19 and Modern Talking's You CanWin. New in the Top 10 is Madonna;

her Angel moves into top 5 (4-13) andthis makes Spain together with the UK(new at 10 this week) the sole marketin Europe where Angel is top 5.Madonna's single for Geffen, Crazy ForYou, is another prime mover in thecharts: 17-27. Italian artist DenHarrow is also new in the top 10; hisFuture Brain moves to 7 this week(from 11). Other fast movers for Eur-thymics (11-24) and the duet betweenPedro Vargas & Julio Iglesias enti-tled Felicidades dumping from 26 to 12this week).

The best played single in Spain isFenizia by Hombres -G followed byBaila Para Mi by Spanish band Ob-jetivo Bermania, one of our Euroc-rossover tips last week.

GREECEBest selling single in Greece is, as ear-lier stated in the Madonna article onpage 8, the 12" single Angel/Into TheGroove. Other popular singles includeTina's Hero, Life Is Life, Axel F, Don'tYou, 19 and Sandra's Maria Mag-dalena.

Apart from two compilation albumsBruce Springsteen, Eurythmics, DireStraits, Modern Talking, Style Coun-cil and Bryan Ferry have best sellingalbums in Greece at the moment.

SWITZERLANDTwo Euro-productions jump in the top10 this week; Michael Cretu (who alsoproduced the number 1 in Switzerland,Sandra) moving from 10 to 5 and Ita-lian singer Den Harrow, moves withhis Futurebrain to 6 (from 13). Highestentry this week is the Bowie & Jaggerduet at 14 and Two Of Us make thebiggest jump outside the top 10 (BlueNight Shadow from 23 to 15).

AUSTRIAIt took a long time for the Kool & TheGang single Cherish to chart outsidethe U.K. After France, Germany, Bel-gium, Holland, Switzerland and De-nmark it seems like Austria will be thenext Euro-country to go along with thissweet ballad: this week's best playedsingle. UB40, Eurythmics. Sandra,Bowie & Jagger and Madonna arethe other airplay favourites on the Au-strian airwaves.

MADONNA MANIANOW SPREADING ALL OVER EUROPE!The last two years lady singers have given a new dimension to the definition of pop. Whenasked "who's the Queen of pop", three names immediately come up; Tina Turner, CyndiLauper and Madonna Louise Ciccone. And although Madonna can't meet all the qualitiesconstantly credited to Tina or Cyndi (some reproach Madonna that her image hasovershadowed her music completely; her lifeshows do not get the same enthousiasticreviews as those of the recent Tina -tour; some accuse her of anti -feminist tendencies) itcan't be denied she is US' hottest star since the days of Marilyn Monroe.

SPECTACULAR NUMBERSIn Europe the Madonna mania hasn'tcome to the same heights yet as in theUS where her numbers are really spec-tacular. Her debut album Madonna isvery close to triple platinum (appr. threemillion copies sold) and the Like A Virginalbum has gone quadruple platinum at4.5 million copies in the US alone and 2.5million more worldwide.

But Europe is closing in. Her firstsingles Holiday, Borderline and LuckyStar were modest sales successes (al-

though faring well in the disco's) but thereal explosion on retail level started end oflast year/beginning of this year with therelease of her second album, Like AVirgin.

Cautiously debuting at 98 in the Euro-pean Top 100 Albums on December 10th1984, the album climbed up to no. 15 infour weeks time, but only hit Top 10 in its12th week. After staying there for threeconsecutive weeks, it wandered 4 1/2months in the Top 30, only to enter againthe second half of August this year when

the real Madonna craze infected Europe.History began on August 23rd when

Into The Groove (an original B- side ofAngel, the only single from Like A Virginthat flopped sofar) entered the UK chartsat 4 which was the highest debuting sing-le for any female artist in the history of theEnglish charts, and it was also WEA'sfastest selling single in the last five years. On the 30th of August Groove jumped tothe top (in its 2nd week!) and the re-released Holiday followed at 2. Conse-quently the rerun on her two albumsstarted off again. Presently the 2 albumstogether sold 2 million copies in Europe, total European single sales figures ex-ceed 5 1/2 million (Holiday 1 1/2 million,Like A Virgin 1 1/2 and Groove nearly 1 1/2 although sales in France and e.g. Spainare not yet started). And a country likeGreece where single sales hardly do notexist, the 12" version of Groove sold over4,000 copies!

Looking at 'these figures it is morethan obvious that Madonna is THE rockphenomenon of the Eighties. But how didshe get to be the hottest female Americansinger in the world ??

"...Some boys kiss me,some boys hug meI think they're o. k.

If they don't give meproper credit

I just walk away..."

(cpFATHER'S FAVORITE.Madonna Louise Ciccone Was born in -Bay City, Michigan (near Detroit) and shewas the oldest of eight childeren (fivebrothers and two sisters). She wasnamed after her mother who died whenshe was seven. "It's extremely rare", saysMadonna, "that a religious Italian womanwould name a child after her. My motherwanted to be a singer. So it was like I

have a mission, to live up to this name".Part of Madonna's attitude towards mencould be related to these special familycircumstances; because her mother wassick for so long Madonna always used tobe daddy's little girl. "I was my father'sfavorite. I knew how to wrap him aroundmy finger," says Madonna. Her fatherhelped her in giving direction to hercareer and helped her setting goals forherself.

Madonna began her artistic career asa dancer, studying ballet, modern, andla77 at the University of Michigan, andthen moved to New York where she wona scholarship with the Alvin Ailey Ameri-

can Dance Theatre. After a few monthsshe becomes Pearl Lange's dance assis-tant but changes direction in 1979 byauditioning as a singer/dancer for theFrench disco singer Patrick Hernandez("Born To Be Alive"). She was immediate-ly singled out by Hernadez' managementand offered the full star treatment: flownto Paris, she was giving a vocal coach, adance teacher, an apartment and achauffeur. "They kept telling me I wasgoing to be the next Edith Piaf ... it was agreat adventure but I soon got tired of it."

Returning to New York City, Madonnahooked up with two brothers who had aband called the Breakfast Club. Madonnalearned to play guitar, keyboards, anddrums, and began to write her ownsongs. This led to her forming her owngroup but her experience in the New Yorkclub scene was less than totally satisfy-ing... the punk/New Wave preference ofmost of the musicians was moving too farfrom her roots: the Motown/R&B soundsshe loved best.

Taking her career into her own hands,Madonna made a demo tape of one ofher original songs, and took it around tothe disc jockeys at the most popular rockclubs. Mark Kamins of Danceteria beganplaying the tune, Everybody, whichrusulted in the being signed to Sire Re-cords.

Released in April of 1982, Everybody(which was accompanied by a video dis-playing Madonna's innovative approachto visuals) topped the dance charts andmade deep inroads in black radio play -lists. It was followed by Holiday, PhysicalAttraction, Burning Up, Borderline, andLucky Star, all of which can be found onher debut album Madonna, produced byReggie Lucas, John Jellybean Benitezand Mark Kamins.

In the fall of 1983 she films her night-club sequence in the movie Vision Quest, the movie that is just out in the main boxoffices in Europe. Two promotional vid-eos where drawn from the album, Gam-bler and Crazy For You, the latter becom-ing a hit in the US and Europe (on Geffen).During the winter of 1984 Madonna filmson location in New York City for the movieDesperately Seeking Susan. This is herfirst starring role where Madonna playsthe freewheeling Susan, whose flamboy-

ant lifestyle is adopted by a bored NewJersey housewife, Roberta (RosannaArquette), hurling her into a fantasy ad-venture of a lifetime.

FEMME FATALE"Acting is just another kind of perform-ing," says Madonna. "It's just an expres-sion, it's just being honest with your audi-ence. So to me it's just an extension ofwhat I do already. When I read the scriptto Desperately Seeking Susan, I felt im-mediately that I could play the part. Su-san is the quintessential femme fatale.Everyone wants to know her, everyonewants to be like her. She has no roots, she represents freedom and adventureand all the things that normal peopledon't think they can do."

In a span of less than 8 years, Madon-na is the worlds hottest singer and allaspects and peculiarities of her private lifeare being delved; her acting debut in thewild gritty film from the streets of NewYork A Certain Sacrifice is now even av-ailable on home video and sees Madonnain her most intimate moments("Madonna's Dirty Laundry" as RollingStone aptly called it); Madonna's earlyphoto sessions for Penthouse and Play-

boy are re- published with the temptingslogan "Madonna In The Nude" and allher former relations with men and theway she slept herself to the top are re-vealed in close details.

But her fame has yet to peak; octobersees the release of The Virgin Tour, 55minutes life footage on music video; arenewed campaign on Angel, the earlierflopped single follows (why not releasingDress You Up, the US single, a far bettercandidate we think) and the Groove sing-le has still not broken completely in theSouthern European countries.

"I want to conquer the world", shesays with a smile. "You watch". Andthat's what we will do

ALEXANDRA'S

NEWS CORNER

Hi to you too! Hope you all had a good rocking week. Usually at this frontanything can happen. unfortunately this week has been a bit thin. Let'stry to get something together anyway, for there are some good newrecords * There's a very young, talented band from the Midlands, calledROUEN who have been signed to Island records. Young, because theiraverage age is 19, the vocalist 17 years of age. They had their debutsingle released, titled Ordinary Life. The band is currently touring the UK* THE SENSIBLE JERSEYS have released their 2nd single for Virgin lastweek, called Two Way Radio, it was produced by BRIAN TENCH of OMDfame * JOHN FOXX has yet again a new single on the market, this trackhas got the title Enter The Angel. It has been reuvrded at John's GardenStudios in London, where he has been working most of the year on hisforthcoming album, which is entitled In Mysterious Ways, due to bereleased in the autumn. Mr. F0)0C takes both the writing and productioncredits for the single *COCK ROBIN had their selftitled debut album released, productioncredits go to STEVE HILLAGE * One of my faves. THE ALARM are aboutto release their new single, Strength. In about another month the newalbum is due. I'm waiting in anticipation * Chrysalis records have signeda deal with Australian label Big Time Records, first release will be Aussieband THE HOODOO GURUS' second album, with the great title: MarsNeeds Guitars. This album has already been released in Australia, whereit went gold within two weeks! The first single release of this LP is entitledBittersweet *Ever heard about 7TH HEAVEN? No? Well them boys had their debutsingle released called Hot Fun, very catchy indeed and it will not be thelast we'll hear from that band! * STUART LEVINE has been producing7-e latest BLANCMANGE single which has got the title What's YourProblem, he was also the producer of their last album * You will mostlikely remember from an earlier issue, when we wrote about the fuzzgoing on about videos and lyrics, especially in America. Well the BBCBreakfast TV did a brave thing in a way, as they showed BILLY IDOL'svideo Dancing With Myself as an example of the sort of clips that USparents complain about. Well well! * Last week saw the release of thesecond single from London trio THE BOLSHOI, this track could beconsidered as a beauty, catchy song with rolling drums. Of course it has

a title: Happy Boy. It Giants, due to be released in October *NA DAVIES of ICEHOUSE has just completed work on the new album, with producer RHETT DAVIES. IVA is now in Bath to complete the albumwith DAVID LORD * SYLVESTER STALLONE is not only best paid actorin the world he has just recorded some TV ID's with GO WEST in LosAngeles * Ring Records is the new born label of BARRY HAY andGEORGE KOOYMANS of GOLDEN EARRING. The first release from itwas the debut single of a new Dutch band BOOM BOOM MANCINI,entitled Red Skies, which was produced by the band, George and Barry.More releases can be expected from various new talents. Besides that,GEORGE as well as BARRY will come out with solo albums, bothworking with different backing bands, with whom they will also occasion-ally appear live. But there is no need for panic- GOLDEN EARRING willdefinitely continue to be a band and will obviously come out with newmaterial again soon *Now as I am on the subject of Dutch matters anyway, let me tell youabout a kind of festival, held yearly, The Big Prize of Holland. It's a contestwith 154 bands from all around the country. Whereby only a few bandswill make it to the finale to be held on 14th of December in Paradiso. Thegeneral idea behind it is, to create more public and recordcompanyinterest for new unknown national talent. Maybe a good idea for othercountries too ? * DEL AMITRI have just recorded a new single, which isa re-recorded version of the track Hammering Heart. Production creditsgo to HUGH JONES. The single will be released end of September *ROUGE MALE just returned from their two and a half month tour in theStates, where on some dates they supported MOTLEY CRUE. Theirdebut album, First Visit has now been released practically everywhere, torave reviews. Taken from that LP was the first single entitled At OverYou. In October the band will be going into the studio to record a followup single. As touring is concerned: supporting WENDY 0' WILLIAMS atthe Hammersmith Palais on September 27th, after that a 10 date tour ofFrance by the end of November which will probably be extented to theBenelux *HERMAN BROOD has recently not only become a Daddy, but also foundtime to finish his new album which has just been released, it's calledBuhnensucht. For them who are not very familiar with this germanicword, it means Stage addicted. Considering the fact that Herman isgigging all the time, this title is more than appropiated * INGWIEMALMSTEEN had his second longplayer out entitled Marching out. Withthe buzz that boy has created in the scene it seems that he is definitelyMarching In * ANITA MEYER (and in case you are yet not familiar with

,that lady from Holland, she's got an outstanding voice!) had her newsingle released called Sometimes When We Touch. MARTIN DUISER didthe production * WHITESNAKE may have lost JON LORD, therefore

WONDER ALBUMNo doubt that the new Stevie Wonderalbum will 'blow a hole' in the EuropeanTop 100 Albums next week. Europeanradio has already started programming itand the retail impression will be felt nextweek.

It is Wonder's first real studio albumsince 5 years (Hotter Than July was hislast one) but it is well worth the wait. Asuperb collection of cheerful funky andjazzy tunes with spirited ballads. After 2plays we're already hooked on the con-tagious Land Of La La and It's Wrong(Apartheid) (very suitable for 12" remix). But speaking of highlights is not doingjustice to this musical genius since all thetracks are infected with a true sense ofhonesty and joy.

Both airplay and sales on theMadonna album continue; Like A Virginmoves into Top 3 (from 5 in its 40th week)and with the exception of Portugal itcharts in all European territories, with verygood positions in the UK, Germany, Hol-

pageland and Belgium, The Cure wrest furtheraway from their cult -status into real ac-claim: 15-25 only in its 3rd week. Tworockbands continue their way to the top:Gary Moore (27-57) and Saxon (41-93).

The success of the English synthi trioBronski Beat came very fast ; immedi-ately after their first single Smalltown Boy,chart positions directly followed in all

European countries. Unfortunately thegroup broke some time ago, but a remixalbum (with one additional new track) hasjust been released on Forbidden Fruit/London entitled Hundreds AndThousands. Following the entry in the UK,the album now debutes in .the EuropeanTop 100 Albums at 71. But Phonogramhas another entry in the Album charts: thenew album of Dexy's Midnight Runners(the folky image has been replaced by amore business -like one), Don't Stand MeDown, is new at 68.

EMI is running a campaign on Talk-ing Heads, and a successful one; StopMaking Sense makes a re-entry at 43 andLittle Creatures moves further up to 19
