VOLUME 20 | ISSUE 4APRIL 2018
As we approach Earth Day, WHRO will air two documentaries highlighting science-related issues that are important to our region. The first is about Bill Nye, formerly the host of a popular PBS program intended to get kids excited about science. These days, Nye’s focus has shifted to educating more than just his younger fans. He is on a mission to educate those who deny the importance of science, and he has become a champion for climate science. I’m looking forward to watching his story in Bill Nye: Science Guy, which airs on April 18 at 10 p.m.
The topic of climate change hits close to home for us as Coastal Virginia is experiencing the highest rates of sea level rise on the East Coast. With so many military bases located here, military staff and leaders from surrounding cities are exploring solutions for the future.
More than 500 local residents took part in some of these research efforts last fall during “Catch the King,” an event that measured flooding during an unusually high—or “king”—tide. Filmmakers from the PBS Science Series NOVA were on hand along with WHRO’s production team, to film the event as part of a new documentary on climate change. That documentary, NOVA: Living with the Weather Machine, including the footage they shot locally, will air on April 18 at 8 p.m. just prior to the program on Bill Nye.
In addition to great television programs, we also have some exciting local events coming up this month. Writer’s Block will
travel to the Eastern Shore on April 21. Join us to hear compelling performances from local poets and storytellers. You can also listen to past performances at whro.org/writersblock On April 26, we will host a screening of Little Women where you can preview the upcoming TV adaptation of the famous novel. Learn more and register to attend at whro.org/events
Our next Classical Open Mic Night will take place on April 25 at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk. These events have become quite popular. If you would like to perform, sign up through WHRO FM’s Facebook page or email [email protected]
Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who supported us last month during the TV portion of our spring pledge drive. Your support enables us to continue providing the quality programs you enjoy. If you didn’t get a chance to donate yet, we would love to hear from you. The radio portion of our spring drive runs April 14–20. Tune in and give us a call or visit our website to Support What You Love.
Enjoy the spring!

‘Bill Nye: Science Guy’ Fights for ScienceBill Nye is back and he is on a mission. The former mechanical engineer became popular in the ‘90s as creator and host of the PBS program Bill Nye the Science Guy, a kids’ show that explained scientific concepts in fun and engaging ways. Now he hopes to garner the attention of adults—specifically those who deny the importance of issues like climate change.
A new documentary, Bill Nye: Science Guy details Nye’s mission to increase science literacy in the nation and takes viewers behind the scenes to explore his private life. Nye entered the public spotlight once again back in 2014 when he debated prominent creationist Ken Ham. This attracted the attention of filmmakers David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, who make documentaries about science and technology. They grew up watching Nye on PBS and share his concern that science has lost its rightful place in some pockets of the country.
“Science literacy has never been more important,” Alvarado explains. “One of the threads in the film is the debate between evolution and creationism. Right now something like 40 percent of the voting electorate think that evolution never happened, that humans appeared to exist in more or
less their present form very recently. That’s a major problem for democracy if a population is not scientifically literate.”
Nye explains in the film that his concern is for future generations and the issues they will face. “As a science educator, I am really more serious about it than ever,” he says. “These people who are denying science, denying evolution, denying the efficacy of vaccinations, and especially denying human-caused climate change—we just can’t have this. I’ve got to fight this fight.”
The film not only follows Nye’s journey of advocacy for all things science, but it also explores his personal life, giving viewers a glimpse into what the man behind the bow tie is really like. He even opens up about his romantic life.
Bill Nye: Science Guy airs on WHRO TV 15 on April 18 at 10 p.m. Read more about the documentary and the filmmakers on our website at whro.org/billnye

The Difficult Beginnings of a Glorious Ballet
The Virginia Arts Festival is in full swing this month, and as always they bring a variety of amazing performances to the area, including many of interest to classical music lovers. One event that you will not want to miss is the Birmingham Royal Ballet teaming up with the Virginia Symphony to bring us the classic ballet Romeo and Juliet with a powerhouse score by the Russian master Sergei Prokofiev. This piece was composed during a perilous time in the Soviet Union: the production was postponed for a number of reasons, including the fact that the person who commissioned the piece and several collaborators were labeled enemies of the state and taken away by the secret police. The Committee on Arts Affairs rejected Prokofiev’s ballet. They were unhappy with the score, and with the happy ending that Prokofiev gave the piece. When the ballet was finally approved to be performed it was only after serious changes had been made, some of them without Prokofiev’s knowledge. This type of government censorship was common at the time.
The premiere took place in what was then Czechoslovakia in 1938, which Prokofiev could not attend because he was restricted by the government. Ten years after the premiere of the ballet, Prokofiev was denounced as too western by the regime. This work stands as a testament to Prokofiev, showing that even under such strict restrictions he was able to create a masterpiece that is beloved to this day. Romeo and Juliet will be at Chrysler Hall April 20–22.
In addition to enjoying such performances alongside you in the audience, WHRO radio personalities will also be involved in several events with the Virginia Arts Festival including the popular Coffee Concert series, beginning April 18, and the Virginia International Tattoo April 26–29. Our next WHRO Classical Open Mic will also take place this month, on April 25. You can find more details at whro.org/events We are proud to help bring you great music both over the air and in our community.
New Program: Rise
Rising sea levels bring high tides and waves to our shores and increasingly, to our streets. Experts say that within 10 to 15 years, Norfolk will be facing a critical issue in rising sea levels. The NOAA tidal gauge at Sewells Point, the peninsula where the critical U.S. Naval base sits, recorded in 2017 the highest relative sea level rise on the East Coast at nearly 15 inches. The water was a foot and a half lower when Naval Station Norfolk was established 100 years ago. Today, parts of the base are close to sea level. When the Navy adds new structures, it builds them higher. However, the base is not the only area prone to flooding. Already, some streets in Hampton Roads are marked with huge rulers indicating the depth of flood waters as a warning to drivers. Some experts fear that rising sea levels could significantly impact the region’s workforce and subsequently, due to the strong defense industry here, the nation’s military readiness.
One community facing an equal threat of sea level rise is the San Francisco Bay area. Rise looks to the Bay area for answers by profiling the stories of men and women living along the water. They present sea level rise from various perspectives and mold a dialogue about the dangers associated with this crisis. Rise will air Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. and begins April 4 on WHRV.

“A traveling van is exciting, just like when the ice cream truck comes, kids are excited and want to learn.” Each year, professionals in the public media industry gather to vote on four general categories: Instructional Media, Community Engagement, Content Production and Promotion. At the 2017 National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) annual conference in Washington,
D.C., STEM at WHRO was presented with the award in the Instructional Media – Engaged Learning category.
The STEM Van, along with its teachers and on-site STEM lessons, has visited Title I elementary schools, public libraries, and community centers, reaching over 3,000 students. A student named Lucas who participated at the Bayview Odd Squad “Be the Agent” camp said, “We get to have fun as we’re doing real math. When I go back to school I won’t have to have help. I already know it, so I can just do it.” The van has iPads, Chromebooks, touchscreen monitors, mobile labs, and supplies for a pop-up makerspace and other engineering activities. All lessons are taught by one of two WHRO early childhood education specialists who are certified elementary teachers.
Children who participate in the Odd Squad camps show gains in math learning, and surveys given to the
children after the camps show an increase in comfort and attitudes toward math. Lamont Maddox, an attorney and a member of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation Leadership Group, which funded the camps, had the opportunity to witness the students’ growth firsthand when he visited one of the camps. “The kids are really enthusiastic about learning,” he recalls. “With the program, they’re interacting a lot with each other and the instructor.”
Schools and organizations that would like a visit from the WHRO STEM Van can coordinate with WHRO by emailing Angie Callahan at [email protected]

WHRO will air Civilizations, a six-part documentary series that explores the power of art throughout history. The first episode, “The Second Moment of Creation,” will focus on how the earliest examples of human expression was limited to simple, abstract etchings. It airs Tuesday, April 17, at 8 p.m. on WHRO.
From the earliest human artifacts and the European renaissance to present-day art and architecture, each episode will highlight how art emerged into a form of self-expression, played a role in different cultures, and continues to encompass the overall human experience.
The fourth episode, “Renaissances,” discusses the well-known European renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as other parts of the world like the Islamic Empire and how their “explosion of creativity” and rebirth differed from their European counterparts.
Viewers will be captivated by the breathtaking, aerial drone footage of the world’s past and modern marvels like the Aztec Templo Mayor in present-day Mexico and the ancient cities of Mesoamerica, to the great mosques of Istanbul and the Buddhist caves of Ajanta in India. Because Civilizations explores museums, cathedrals, mosques and other historical locations, viewers will also get special access to priceless works of art and architecture from the comfort of their own home.
Liev Schreiber, critically acclaimed film, theater and television actor from the TV series, Ray Donovan, will narrate the series. His other acting roles include The Manchurian Candidate and Spotlight.
The series was filmed on six continents— Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America—and was produced over five years by PBS,
BBC, and the television company, Nutopia, which has worked with different organizations like National Geographic. Civilizations celebrates what makes each culture and each part of the world unique and reminds its audience of the emotional bond of human creativity that binds us together.
The first five episodes will air Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. from April 17 to May 15. The series will resume in June.
