Hello to a brand new year! January is a traditional time for reflection and 2012 should be no exception. Here at ASC we brainstormed recently and propose the following resolutions, BUT we hope you will come up with your own ideas! I will take care of myself through yoga, Zumba, or regular walks at the beach or in the woods. I’ll learn more about autism spectrum disorders by visiting the ASC library. I’ll expand my network by attending a support group at ASC I’ll sign up for at least one workshop. I’ll learn more about positive behavioral supports. I’ll make and use a visual to help resolve one issue with my child. I will ask for and accept help from friends, neighbors and/or family. I will help my child’s extended family understand autism. (Call ASC for tips) I’ll bring my family to ASC’s annual picnic (or other family event). I’ll spend 1:1 time with each of my children. I’ll try a new family activity each month. I’ll catch my child being good at least once a day. What are your ideas for resolutions? When: February 28th, 6:30—8:30 pm

Where: 6 Southside Road, Danvers

Barbara Smith, M.S., OTR/L has worked with children and adults with developmental disabilities

in a variety of settings over the past 30 years. She is the author of several books, including her

latest, From Rattles to Writing: A Parent’s Guide to Hand Skills. Barbara is passionate about

adapting activities and using teaching strategies that help children with attention and sensory

challenges to develop hand skills. Parents will learn how to provide the types of sensory stimula-

tion that help children develop the skills that lead to reading and writing- amazingly, this all be-

gins at birth! Children with autism often demonstrate sensory preferences and aversions that

impact learning. Adapting activities and using teaching strategies and sensory reinforcement to

meet the individual child’s needs is critical in achieving sensory regulation, focus and engagement

in hand activities. Please contact the Autism Support Center to register: 978-777-9135 or

tism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and ac-

cepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program.

auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to

bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be

shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk,

shout or sing - in other words, AMC’s “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced unless the

safety of the audience is questioned.

A T H L E T I C O P P O R T U N I T I E S Report Offers Ways to Increase Athletic Opportunities for Students

Creating equal opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in physical education and athletics in school is the subject of a new report from the U.S. Department of Education. It fol-lows a 2010 Government Accountability Office report that cited limited opportunities for stu-dents with disabilities in these areas, despite legal obligations for states and schools to provide equal access. The new report includes an overview of federal law, suggestions to increase opportu-

nities for children, program options, and resources.

Just before Christmas, we had great day of climbing at Boston Rock Gym in Woburn. Three chil-dren participated, including Andrew Donlon (above), as well one of the parents. While one family mentioned that this was a big step for their son and that just getting through the door was a

challenge, everyone had a great time.

After some instruction, the kids were climbing up two or three of the rocks. The wall was pretty

difficult, so we decided to move onto another piece of apparatus.

The two instructors did a wonderful job of explaining the gym’s rules and expectations—they were

kind, patient and very intuitive.

We want to thank Boston Rock Gym for helping us make this a very successful first experience.

A big THANK YOU to Beverly and Harriet Norman, co-

owners of Marblehead Antiques, for their very gener-

ous contribution to the Autism Support Center. Over

the years, their donations have aided families and al-

lowed us to offer events to the children we serve. If

you haven’t visited their delightful store on Pleasant

Street in Marblehead do so soon. You won’t be disap-

pointed!

Our most sincere gratitude to two friends of ASC

During the holidays for over 12 years the families of Shore Country Day School have collaborated with ASC to bring gifts to those less fortunate. We would like to recognize the hard work and dedication that the volun-teers of Shore Country Day put into the gift giving experience. Their commitment to help families in need goes beyond just buying a few gifts - they take this job very seriously and they make sure that each child that receives a gift feels important and special; each gift bag is packed with beautiful new presents showing the attention everyone at the school puts into each individual gift. This is giving at its best!

We are pleased to announce that ASC’s proposal for family support

flexible funding to the Doug Flutie, Jr., Foundation has been approved.

We will begin accepting flex funding requests for Flutie funds soon. Low income families with a child on the autism spectrum not receiving funding from another source of support (for example, DDS family support, intensive supports, DESE/DDS, etc.) are eligible to apply. Funds can be requested for recreational activities, respite care, tui-

tion to a social skills group, Y membership or other goods and services

of direct benefit to the child with ASD.

The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation awards grants on an annual basis to non-profit organizations and

schools that provide services, education and advocacy for children with autism spectrum disor-

der and to organizations that conduct research on the causes and effects of autism. Over 200

organizations applied for funding and 30 organizations have been awarded grants for the 2011

grant cycle.
