Lesson from Baba through UDI

Udi was originated by Baba Himself. It was not just the ashes produced as a result of burning fuel which Baba used to throw in the Dhuni, the sacred fire which he kept ever burning. It was blessed and freely distrib-uted by Him, as a cure for many physical and mental maladies.

UDI is not an ordinary ash. It is the ash from the dhuni which Baba had lit by his yogic power. Hence the Udi has all the powers of Baba. It has banished the agonies of many of HIS devotees. Every day many devotees of Sai, because he is not physically present, request UDI from Shirdi Mandir, and use it regularly in the Puja as we get HIS blessing through the UDI. In certain incidents, in the case of non-availability of UDI, ash obtained from any other source can be used after proper prayers and thoughts of HIM which serves the same purpose as the UDI obtained from Shirdi.

As it is emphasized in Satcharitra, there is a deeper significance behind UDI. Baba taught his devotees that our body which is composed of wood or matter of five elements will fall down, become inanimate after all their enjoyments are over, and will be reduced to ashes. HE wants his devotees to remember that when we are alive we are not able to control our senses, but when we breathe our last we turn into ash and find an end to our worldly life.

As we lead our lives on this Thursday let us think of how we can lead a humble life with HIS blessings.

Amravati –Sherdi

In the morning I got up as usual, prayed & came into the hall. There

were a few clients with whom I sat talking. Gokhale, Bwaji, &

Bhow Durrani came. I made up my mind to leave this afternoon for

Shirdi & told Dharwankar to make the necessary arrangements.

Mandlik Shastri & Haridas are sorry that I have to go but it can not

be helped. After breakfast I lay down for a while & then sat reading.

Chitale master came. Bandu came this morning from Elichpur. I

decided to take him with me. So I dressed at 4 P.M. & went to the

Railway station with my son Baba. With Bandu I got into the Mail.

At Amravati station I met Mr Smith of the Postil Department & his

sister-in-law.

He lost his wife some ten days ago. At Badmera I met Mr Bind, &

at Akola Mr Barr & Captain Doctor. All the way up to Kopargaon I

had the first class compartment all to myself. I could not sleep well

in the train. At Kopargaon we got a tonga & drove to Sherdi

reaching it soon after day break.

Baba has let the dhuni burn for 60 years during His stay in

Dwarakamai in Shirdi. He single handedly maintained this dhuni

which is not an easy task. He has to always be alert that the fire

would not go up higher, and the fire should not be put out by rain.

All these things were taken care by HIM. That is why we know

that HE is a great saint who can control 5 elements of nature.

DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE

OM SAI RAM

Hi all, There are so many miracles that have taken place and still tak-ing place in my life, I don’t know where to start. Here are a few of such wonderful leela's of SaiBaba. First, I was not a stanch devotee of Baba until I got married. My wife is a stanch devotee of Baba from her childhood, because of her belief in Sadguru, I also started becoming one. Before my marriage I lost my job and was tensed on how to han-dle such a situation. But I told my fiancée (now wife) what had hap-pened and she said that everything will be fine, it's just a matter of time and to make matters worst my VISA was expiring and I had to come back and apply for renewal.

After our marriage I came back to US and applied for my Visa Re-newal and started looking for jobs. But nothing was happening for Sometime. Suddenly because of some strange reason, I wanted to read Sai Charita and a friend of mine had a copy of the book that he gave to me to read. My wife who was in India at that time also though of send-

your family.

2. Never speak ill of others.

4. Stay away from the people who want to be centre of attraction.

5. After successfully overcoming health related problems, you have joined my

ing me the book and when I told her I have the Book she was surprised because she was also thinking the same. Guess my time had come to get the blessings from Baba. I started reading the Book on Thu's and finished in a week and I did 5 Sapthas. After reading, I realized that if we sur-render ourselves to Baba by leaving all our Egoism, Fickle mindedness, Pride and have full faith and patience, he will take care of us. That's what happened. I got my Visa papers after two months and I sent all my documents to my wife after putting all the Documents at Babas feet. After she received them, she sent them to the consulate and in 10 days she got her visa with out any Hitch. Then I told her to come here and in case I don’t get a Job in couple of months we will go back to India. After her arrival to US, my company President called me and offered me to work in the Administration department for a minimum amount. First I was hesitant but realized that Baba had showed me a way to survive.

I was traveling back from office when heavy thunder storm came by surprise and it was 6.30 pm and the downpour was so heavy that I could not see anything ahead of me. I was traveling on state highway which is single lane with water on both the sides (flooded), I was driving very slowly and then I asked Baba help me. To my surprise I saw one truck coming from my left and turning so I slowed down, to my surprise the truck turned left and the back of the truck(18 wheeler) was full of florescent paint (orange) and he lead me out of rains almost up to my house. It was a miracle.

Baba‟s Close Devotees

Continued from last issue…..

It was probably in 1915 Ramanavami, when intending to go to Shirdi, I went into the Indore cloth bazaar to fix upon a present - worthy of be-ing presented to Baba. I found a fine lace-embroidered muslin of the Dacca type, produced at Chander. It was some 5 feet square with em-broidered body and 8 or 9 inches of lace border all round. It was very nice and worth the 85 rupees I paid for it. It could be folded into 6" x 6" x 1" packet. I took it with me to Shirdi and kept it inside my shirt. Devotees usually go and present Baba with cloth in order that the same may be returned to them with Baba's blessings; and the same is returned to them. In my case, I had made up my mind that if Baba cared for my love (which knew no difference between him and me) he should not return the same to me but should retain it and wear it. When each devotee went and presented his cloth, it would be openly bestowed and placed on Baba and then at the end, the attendants would call out, "Whose is this" and return it. In order to avoid the re-turn, I had taken my tiny packet and when I bowed to Baba, I slyly shoved the packet under his mattress (gadi). When all clothes were taken and returned, none noticed what was beneath the gadi. Baba got up and said "Clear off all that lies on the gadi and dust it". When the mattress was removed, there was the muslin packet. Baba picked it up and said, "Hello, What is this? Muslin!" and spread it out and said, "I am not going to return this. This is mine". He then put it round his body and said to me, "Don't I look nice in this?" I was immensely happy as his loving heart had fulfilled my request for the acceptance and retention of the present - as an index of the fact that I was not dif-ferent from him - that I and he were one. I was not different from him. I and he were really one.

Our unity was expressly granted, in another way and at another time by Baba - about the same year.

I had gone to Shirdi and was staying as usual at Ayi's. In the afternoon, when Baba was alone, he sent some one to fetch me and after dismissing the messenger from his pres-ence, he was very kind to me, made me sit close to him, embraced me, and said "The key of my treasury is now placed in your hands. Ask anything you want, e.g., Rs.5 or Rs. 100 a month, or what you like and I will give it to you". I felt at once that this was a tempta-tion and declined to ask for anything. Sai Baba knew what was necessary, good or useful for me and it was for him to decide and give or withhold. It was not for me to ask. Seeing my disinclination to ask, he held me by the chin and coaxed me into asking him for something. Then I asked, "Is it agreed Baba, that you will grant anything I ask for?" "Yes" was his answer. "Then Baba," I replied, "I want this, in this and in any future birth that may befall on me you should never part from me. You should always be with me.'' And he patted me joyously and said, "Yes I shall be with you, inside you, and outside you, what-ever you may be or do." I was supremely happy. I feel that he is always with me. At times, he visibly shows his form to reassure me or guide me.

Many years later, I lost a child in a building which had numerous occupants. My wife was

greatly depressed and started weeping. I assured her that Baba did only what was good

for us and had taken away that child and so we should not weep and attract a crowd. I

asked her to sleep till morning when the funeral would take place. She could not bear the

sight of the corpse, and so I took it on myself and she went to lie down. Then when I had

the corpse on my lap, Baba appeared to me, took me out and said, "Do you want me or

the dead child? Choose. You cannot have both. If you want me to revive the child, I will;

but then you will have me no more with you. If you do not want revival, you will have

many children in due course." I had no hesitation in telling him that I wanted him. "Then

do not grieve", he said and vanished. It is thus he encourages me when the occasion

needs it, even by his presence. All my needs are met by Baba's grace. I do not trouble him

with prayers for my worldly gains or support. I have my income and property and insur-

ance and I am content with the provision for the present and future. If any need arises, I

find that somehow the money comes up. I have nothing to complain of. Finally if I am

asked what I would suggest to one who wished to find out how he (not having met Sai

Baba in the flesh) could make himself a devotee of Sai Baba and get his help, my answer

will be that he should sit wholeheartedly and try to pour his heart in love to Sai Baba. It is

not essential that he should go to Shirdi for that purpose - though Shirdi associations are

undoubtedly helpful. All that he should do is to transcend the senses and concentrate

with love on Sai Baba. He would surely reach and obtain the help of Sai Baba - to obtain

all that he is fit to achieve or receive.

Here is one more interesting tale from the album of Panchatantra. Once, there lived a

pious Brahmin in a small village, by the name of Mitra Sharma. He used to perform

religious rituals. On one occasion, he was rewarded with a goat for his services by a

wealthy man. The Brahmin was happy to get a goat as the reward. He happily slung

the goat over his shoulder and began the journey towards his home. On the way, three

cheats (Thugs) saw the Brahmin taking the goat.

All of them were lazy and wanted to cheat the Brahmin

so that they could take away the goat. They said,” This

goat will make a delicious meal for all of us. Let's some-

how get it”. They discussed the matter amongst them-

selves and devised a plan to get the goat by befooling the

Brahmin. After deciding the plan, they got separated

from one another and took different hiding positions at

three different places on the way of the Brahmin.

As soon as, the Brahmin arrived at a lonely place, one of the cheats came out of his

hiding place and asked Brahmin in a shocking manner, “Sir, what are you doing? I

don't understand why a pious man like you needs to carry a dog on his shoulders?"

The Brahmin was surprised to hear such words. He screamed, “Can't you see? It's not

a dog but a goat, you stupid fool". The cheat replied,” Sir, I beg your pardon. I told

you what I saw. I am sorry, if you don’t believe it.” The Brahmin was annoyed at the

discrepancy, but started his journey once again.

The Brahmin had barely walked a distance, when another cheat came out of his hid-

ing place and asked the Brahmin, “Sir, why do you carry a dead calf on your shoul-

ders? You seem to be a wise person. Such an act is pure stupidity on your part." The

Brahmin yelled, "What? How can you mistake a living goat for a dead calf?" The

second cheat replied, ""Sir, you seem to be highly mistaken in this regard. Either you

don’t know how does goat look like or you are doing it knowingly. I just told you

what I saw. Thank you". The second cheat went away smiling. The Brahmin got con-

fused, but continued to walk further.

T H E G L O R Y O F S H I R D I S A I

Page 9: Volume 2011-13

Again the Brahmin had covered a little distance when the third cheat met him. The

third cheat asked laughingly, "Sir, why do you carry a donkey on your shoulders? It

makes you a laughing stock”. Hearing the words of the third thug, the Brahmin be-

came really worried. He started thinking, “Is it really not a goat? Is it some kind of a

ghost?"

He thought that the animal he was carrying on his shoul-

ders might really be some sort of a ghost, because it

transformed itself from goat into a dog, from dog into a

dead calf and from dead calf into a donkey. The Brah-

min got frightened to such an extent that he hurled the

goat on the roadside and ran away. The three tricksters

laughed at the gullible Brahmin. They caught the goat

and were happy to feast on it.

Baba's Passing Away

72 Hours' Samadhi

Thirty two years before this, i.e., in 1886 A.D., Baba made an attempt to

cross the border line. On a Margashirsha Pournima (Full moon) day,

Baba suffered from a severe attack of asthma. To get rid of it, Baba de-

cided to take His prana high up and go into samadhi. He said to Bhagat

Mhalasapti - "Protect My body for three days. If I return, it will be al-

right; if I do not, bury My body in that open land (pointing to it) and fix

two flags there as a mark." Saying this, Baba fell down at about 10 P.M.

His breathing stopped, as well as His pulse. It seemed as if His prana left

the body. All the people including the villagers came there and wanted to

hold an inquest and bury the body in the place pointed by Baba. But

Mhalasapati prevented this. With Baba's body on his lap he sat full three

days guarding it. After three days passed, Baba showed signs of life at 3

A.M. His breathing commenced, the abdomen began to move. His eyes

opened and stretching His limbs, Baba returned to consciousness (life)

again.

This miracle is described in more detail in other books and has been

Chapter 36: The Value of Human Birth

Continued from the previous issue…

Some human beings do not possess knowledge of the value of the gift of human life and waste it going about aimlessly. They are after worldly pursuits and one has to feel sorry for such men who are ignorant of their potential. Some are those who by the Grace of Divine have gained knowledge but, do no use it for proper purpose and they too fritter away their spiritual energy. They have the opportunity to get themselves released from worldly bondage but they are in-volved in selfish activities and thus get lost.

The importance of human birth is service to God. This can be done in some form like help to oth-ers, worship, meditation, and reciting God’s names. That is man’s duty but what is more signifi-cant is that such a service should be done in time. For instance, charity at the proper time alone will be meaningful. There is, however, one unfailing source from whom mankind can expect ser-vice being done at the most opportune time. That is God. Religious literatures point out that God’s duty towards His devotees combines both. Service to devotees in time, when they face dis-tress, is always good. On our part, we must adopt the motto ‘Work is Worship’.

We must work hard, use our knowledge to obtain salvation and also serve, as a part of our spiri-tual obligations, humanity and that too in time. God is kind to attend the needs of His devotees when they require. We have to pray God not only to protect but also help us at the needed hour. God will surely respond. We should also put in hard work to obtain Divine Grace.
