Plagiarism and Cheating Admonition. As the semester draws to a close, it is importantfor students to reflect on the benefits of an honest and honorable approach to theiracademic endeavors. There have been moments in the past at this time of year whenstudents have made moral compromises stemming from a lack of preparedness orunhealthy ambitions which have resulted in academic and disciplinaryconsequences. We want to take a moment to remind students to be extra vigilant withregard to exercising academic integrity, and to encourage parents to consideraddressing these issues at home before students find themselves in the midst oftemptation at school.

Also, below is a brief description of the school’s definition of plagiarism as well as theschool policy on how such situations are handled. Best wishes to all students as theystrive to complete their coursework in an exemplary and noble fashion.Plagiarism, as defined by the English department, means presenting the work (ideas, words, phrasings, graphs, tables, images, etc.) of someone else as if it were your own.Any thoughts or language not your own and not common knowledge needs to have been

Cheating, copying, and plagiarism (presenting someone else’s words or ideas as thoughthey were your own) are serious offenses that violate the mutual trust that is essential tothe educational process. They will not be tolerated, excused, or overlooked. Milestone School Year EndsBy: Principals Torgun Lovely and Casey Churchill

Another fantastic Liberty school year is coming to a close, and along with it, a chance tolook back upon a year of solid academic achievement for our students. The LibertyBoard of Directors and administration could not be happier with the accomplishments ofour students, instructors, support staff, and parents.

Page 9: Volume 21, Issue 35- May 21, 2018 Liberty Common High ...hs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File/LCHS M… · Free-Dress-Day Rules Clothing must be in good condition,

Liberty Common School has become a premier school in northern Colorado due to theproper partnership of parents, professional staff, and hardworking students. We arethankful to all who helped make this year so successful.

The elementary school continues to thrivewith 612 students, 60 staff, and 1000prospective students on the high schooland elementary lottery list. LibertyCommon Elementary School is a modelexample of how a school shouldoperate. This past year, Liberty openedour doors to many teachers andadministrators from schools across thestate that were looking for answers on howto run a successful organization. Manytours were given and meetings wereattended by both teachers andadministrators to answer these questionsand give insight into how this is done.

During the 2013-2014 school year, Liberty started the first ever Core KnowledgeColorado Network. This year, on February 16th, Addenbrook Classical Academy inLakewood hosted the event. About 400 teachers traveled to Denver to share ideas andlearn about the rich Core Knowledge content. This networking legacy has doubled incapacity since we started. Liberty staff had a blast making the journey south toLakewood on a charter bus. This was a great opportunity for us to bond, see other CKfacilities, and continue this annual tradition of networking with other CK schools inColorado. Networking provides our teachers an opportunity to meet and learn from otherteachers. I’d like to thank our teachers who presented at this conference and sharedtheir expertise with others. Their teamwork and leadership has again placed Liberty onthe map.

Teachers continue to embrace using data toassess student progress throughout theyear. Our teachers analyze NWEA data tohelp make sure students are accessing allthe skills and content taught here atLiberty. Grade level teams met monthly todiscuss student progress and help givefeedback to each other to ensure studentsare provided with the best instruction to meettheir needs. This process of entering andanalyzing data, discussing students, andproviding interventions to help strugglingstudents has been adapted and refined due

to the support and leadership of our Academic Support Team led by Mr. Matt Kazy andMrs. Sandy Stoltzfus. Our Academic Support Team and classroom teachers workcountless hours to make sure all students have access to the incredible Core Knowledgecurriculum. Our goal is to close the achievement gap and get all students access to therich curriculum we teach.

Lastly, Liberty continues to successfullynavigate our way through the new onlinestate testing. This year we had grades 3and 4 test on paper and all remaininggrades test on the computer. Our hope withthis plan is that the paper testing in theearlier grade levels will give our students anadvantage on this test. We understand andagree with the dissatisfaction of CommonCore State Standards and the online statetesting. Liberty Common School, as a public

Page 10: Volume 21, Issue 35- May 21, 2018 Liberty Common High ...hs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File/LCHS M… · Free-Dress-Day Rules Clothing must be in good condition,

charter school, still needs to abide by thelaw and conduct these tests. We thank allthe parents that allowed their children totake these tests. This is the right choiceeven if you are not in agreement with CCSSor CMAS. Liberty’s stance has been andalways will be to fulfill our obligation to thestate. If we disagree, then we should fightthat battle at the Capital. We encourageparents to have their children take thesetests in the future to show the state all thegreat work we are doing here. I amconfident our students’ scores will remain atthe top again this year.

Liberty's mission is to provide a contextual body of knowledge which will in turn providestudents with a rich domain vocabulary. This rich vocabulary, along with strong phoneticinstruction, allows our students to both decode and comprehend what they read. Literatestudents make quality citizens. Quality citizens make for a more democraticsociety. Liberty elementary is on track with our mission.

At the high school, we're more thanenthusiastic about the way our eighthyear is finishing out. Liberty's sixth seniorclass is graduating in style, and they'veset the bar high in our sixth year with a fullhigh-school roster.

In addition to academically outpacing theirpeers at all other Colorado high schools, our seniors have certainly put LCHS onthe map. Yes, we've bragged much abouthow they earned the second-highestcomposite SAT score in the entire state -and why not?

Our seniors have been commended and celebrated in the media, in both chambers ofthe Colorado State General Assembly, in the city-council chamber, and in the PSDBoardroom. That achievement and attention, along with being rated by US News & World Report asone of the nation’s top high schools, has flung wide open the doors of opportunity for thesenior class, and for all LCHS students who follow. We've become a routine target fornearly every college recruiter covering the West.

Talk about superb young leaders;our seniors have built andestablished many new traditionsthat will define our institution andits students for many years tocome. The athletic programs arealso continuing to grow andmature, adding vibrancy to ouracademically rich environment. What's just as impressive is thefollowership at Liberty. As theseniors march off, onward andupward from Liberty, the juniorclass is stepping up in amarvelous way. Next year's House captains, sophomore representatives, appointedofficers, and school captains are installed, and they are already working on plans for thenext school year.

And let's not forget our junior-high

Page 11: Volume 21, Issue 35- May 21, 2018 Liberty Common High ...hs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File/LCHS M… · Free-Dress-Day Rules Clothing must be in good condition,

students. Rounding out their final years of theCore Knowledge Sequence has prepared themwell for high school. This year's 7th & 8thgraders proved to be a fun cohort making thekind of academic progress we expect to see atLiberty, while simultaneously maintaining somehallway spunk - right through to the end. Their road to maturity is an enthralling thing tobehold, and we can't wait to see how they leadthe high school over the next four and fiveyears.

As a parent-run school, Liberty's high expectations have pushed students and staffalike. This was a year of particularly hard work, and invention. It's hard to imagine itturning out much better.

On behalf of the faculty, staff andadministration, we offer our sincereand humble thanks to all Libertyparents. Your leadership, guidance, volunteerism, financialsupport, and prayers havecontributed mightily to what we'reconvinced is the best publiceducation Colorado has to offer.

To the eleven 8th graders movingon from Liberty next year, we wishyou a fond farewell. To allreturning Liberty students, we'realready looking forward to seeing you again on Monday morning, August 27th.

In the meantime, enjoy the summer break. You’ve earned it.

From Mr. Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

Dear Fellow Liberty Parents: Our school’sfaculty and staff have achieved aherculean feat in delivering yet anothersolid year of academic instruction to ourchildren. A high-quality school like LibertyCommon is an intricate institution with lotsof moving parts, lots of variables, andfrequent unplanned episodes. But thanksto a truly professional faculty, a strong andfocused curriculum, and a clear familycentered vision for community service,Liberty Common has consistentlyrepresented the bold revolution in publiceducation it was designed to be overtwenty years ago.

Your students were magnificent thisyear. They worked hard, matured nicely, and embraced the virtues and values of a

Page 12: Volume 21, Issue 35- May 21, 2018 Liberty Common High ...hs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File/LCHS M… · Free-Dress-Day Rules Clothing must be in good condition,

LCHS seniors lobbying a Colorado StateSenator last month on the exclusivebalcony just off the Senate Chamber.

truly noble community. I couldn’t be moreproud to work alongside all my colleaguesin the vital mission of educating LibertyCommon students. Thank you for beingdedicated partners in maintaining such amarvelous parental tradition of directingthe education and upbringing of yourchildren.

I’m writing here specifically to request everyone’s help in one more important way beforethe school year concludes. Thanks to Liberty’s substantial leadership in Colorado’scharter-school movement, we’ve banded together with other charter schools throughoutthe state to petition various political figures for favorable treatment of charterschools. For example, I’m happy to report we enjoyed some significant victories at theColorado State Capitol this year. Reflecting on the recently concluded state legislative session (adjourned two weeksago), it is clear charter schools did quite well. CLICK HERE for a rundown ofhighlights. We helped secure the largest increase in per-pupil funding in recenthistory. We secured $5.5 million for our charter-school brethren who are charted by thestate’s Charter Schools Institute (Liberty is not in that category, but their success mattersa lot to us). We were also advocates for over $4 million in new appropriations to theCharter School Capital Construction Fund. Liberty has worked hard to cultivate bipartisan political support at the State Capitol; andthis year, it really paid off. Now is a perfect time for Liberty families to directly expressapproval to legislators for their support of charter schools, and to encourage them tomaintain a positive orientation toward pro-charter issues. Through the Colorado Leagueof Charter Schools, we’ve created THIS EMAIL TEMPLATE to make sending a note tolegislators really easy. Please take a couple of minutes to share your thoughts anddescribe your support for prudent public policy providing more beneficial treatment ofcharter schools, and more equitable charter-school funding. Again, thank you for your parental leadership of our excellent school. Enjoy a summerfull of good books and high adventure; and let’s look forward to regrouping in August foran even stronger 2018-19 school year.

From Mr. Lovely, Principal

From the 1934 high-schooltextbook "Good Manners" usedin "Household Science" classof that day:

“Rule No. 40. The Departure. Leaveon the day set for your going. Try toleave at a reasonable hour rather thanupset the family by a too late or tooearly hour. Be sure you pack all yourbelongings, and leave your room inorder.

"In homes where there is hired help, you may leave a small gift or piece of moneyfor the maid because of the extra work you have caused her. You can easily thankher for helping to make your stay pleasant.

"Thank your hostess sincerely and simply. “Mrs. Brand, this has been a veryhappy visit. I do appreciate your kindness in having me in your home.” Say good-bye to all the members of the family.

"Many thoughtless guests leave a home without even an after word of thanks tothe hostess. No hostess wishes to feel that her home has been used merely as aconvenient stopping-place. Unless you wish to be considered ill-bred, it isabsolutely necessary to write a letter to your hostess within a week after your visit.Do not gush or over-emphasize your enjoyment of the visit, but be frank andsincere in expressing your appreciation of the family’s hospitality.”
