Christ Lutheran Church Newsletter Mission Statement
Christ Lutheran Church exists to “...continue to Share the Good News of Jesus Christ with members, community & the world.”
“Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace!” So we sing every week before Christ’s
altar, as the Church has sung for countless generations.
Jesus brought peace to earth – peace between man and God, because through him, we have the forgiveness of
sins, and deliverance from slavery to sin, and these gifts bring an end to our enmity.
The Holy Spirit also has his gift of peace, which he produces in those who believe in Jesus (see Gal 5:22). He
brings the peace of a good conscience, which is washed clean of the guilt and punishment of sins, and is forti-
fied by confident trust in God’s promises. He brings a peace that surpasses all understanding, which enables us
to endure even the worst kinds of difficulties and temptations in this life.
But there is another way in which the Holy Spirit’s gift of peace works: by helping us to live with one another
in love and unity. This kind of peace, however, takes some work and effort on our part! So Saint Paul wrote in
his letter to the Ephesians 4:3:
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have
been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to main-
tain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
This is the sort of unity that Jesus prayed that his Church would have. Meditate on these words, with which
Christ prayed for his disciples – and for you:
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be
one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that
you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are
one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent
me and loved them even as you loved me.” Jn 17:20-23
For this reason, the Church of all ages always strives to live together in unity and peace.
Sadly, the unity and peace of Christ have been broken in the past, among us, in our families, and in our neigh-
borhoods. The sinful works of the flesh – rivalries, dissensions, divisions (see Gal 5:20) – have manifested

themselves. We do not, however, give up! As Christians, we never cease to desire and strive for that unity and
peace, for which Christ prayed, and which the apostle Paul exhorted us to maintain.
Out of love for one another, and for all our Christian brethren throughout the world, therefore, we gather
to worship God, and receive his gifts in the Divine Service in a way that reflects this desire for peaceful unity.
As Lutherans, we strive for greater conformity with one another, and with our heritage of the last 2,000 years.
We ground ourselves in Scripture, we build each other up on Christ, and we rely solely on God’s grace. In this
way, our doctrine and practice becomes recognizably Christian throughout the world, not only tothose who are
alive today, but also to those who have gone before us: to the entire body of Christ – of which we are so
blessed by God’s grace to be members.
May we ever love God’s peace, strive to keep it, and pray that his peace may be given to us in abundance, ac-
cording to his good and gracious will.
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” Mt 5:9.
Join Christ Lutheran Church for Christian Education
Night each Wednesday!
Beginning in the fall, our Christian Education Night will be held weekly every Wednesday. Bible History
and Youth Catechesis will continue, and our adult study group will also resume. The book we will be reading
next year is Has American Christianity Failed?, by Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller, Senior Pastor of St. Paul Lu-
theran Church, Austin, Texas. This 2016 book will help us all to understand the many temptations around us
to disbelieve the Word of God and to build our own ladders to God instead. We will learn why these
manmade ladders are so unsatisfying and will ultimately let us down in the day of trouble. Wolfmueller's
style is exceptionally easy to read, doubly so in this book, as he traces his own journey away from these
manmade ladders and toward the cross. A blurb from one of my seminary professors: “Christianity in North America has largely been shaped by unbiblical assumptions about the power of human
choice. In an engaging and conversational style, Wolfmueller draws on his own experiences as a college stu-
dent moving from church to church and more recently as a Lutheran pastor to offer a Christ-centered cri-
tique. Wolfmueller does not offer programs or techniques for church revitalization but rather invites his read-
ers to hear the Word of the cross and find their confidence in the sure and certain promises of Christ Jesus.
This book will challenge, edify, and encourage faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in the context of our self-
addicted and chaotic culture.” —John T. Pless, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Missions, Concordia Theological Seminary,
Fort Wayne, Indiana

Greetings in Christ! As we approach the end of summer, please pray for those travelling for a safe return
home. Also pray for blessings for those starting or returning to school for the new school year.
The Church Council has completed its work in reviewing the draft revisions to the church Constitution and
By-Laws. The current plan is to present these final drafts to the congregation at the next Congregational
meeting on August 25. The congregation will have 30 days to review and submit comments back to the
committee. I would like to thank both the Council and especially the committee who spent so much time in
revising the Constitution and By-laws for their great work in developing an excellent set of updated docu-
ments that can be easily used by the church for years to come.
Please continue to pray for God’s blessings and joy on Christ Lutheran.

Portals of Prayer for July—September are available on the podium in the Narthex. Please take as
many as you need for your use and to share with friends who might wish to use them for daily
devotions.
OFFERING TELLERS NEEDED
Can you donate about 15 – 20 minutes of your time after worship a few or a lot of Sun-
days to serve as an offering teller? Two non-related adults are required each Sunday to
count and report the Sunday offerings. Specialized skills are not required. Please contact
Kelly Kensing (806-765-4108) or [email protected] or Rebecca Barrette (210-355-
0158) or [email protected]) or sign the sheet on the podium in the narthex to let her
know when you’ll help.
The NYG was an awesome experience for the 4 youth that attended. They rode with multiple other youth
from Hope and Amarillo. They participated in smaller group break out sessions, as well as the huge opening
and nightly ceremonies. They stopped in Kansas City and were able to go to World of Fun despite the power
outrages that hit the city for part of the day. They also got to visit the Mall of America. Four of the youth are
currently attending church camp so I’m sure we will have even more stories to share of their fellowship
there. Thank you to all who helped by participating in our fund raisers and garage sale which paid the way
for their trip. It has been an eventful and fun Summer 2019!
NURSERY CARE AVAILABLE!
Parents of young children please join us for Adult Bible class! We are now providing nursery care for all in-
fants and toddlers ages 0 to 2 years 8:50 – 10:00 each Sunday. In addition, do not forget Sunday school clas-
ses are open for all students ages 3 to 18.
YOUTH GROUP by Allen & Kim Graham
It’s almost time to gear up for back-to-school. Once again, we will be collecting school supplies for Waters
Elementary students. Keep your eyes peeled for information in the bulletin!
Collections for Neighborhood House are also continuing. Keep putting your diabetic supplies, small bottles
of shampoo, small tubes of toothpaste, etc. in the box by the refrigerator in the kitchen. They will be collect-
ed and delivered monthly. Hope everyone’s had a nice summer.
I have been blessed to be able to move my mom to an Assisted Living facility in Idalou, which is a lot closer
than Amarillo!
God bless our church family, the Hinton family, and our work with the church.

Our library has received another book by Eric Metaxas, a New York Times best-sellig author. (His Bon
Hoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Martin Luther, The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed
the World are already on our shelves.
Miracles: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How They Can Change Your Life. By Eric Metaxas
What are miracles, and why do so many people believe in them? Metaxas discusses the compatibility be-
tween faith and science, providing inspirational stories of actual miracles. He issues a powerful challenge,
asserting that miracles are not only possible but are far more widespread than we have ever imagined.
CHURCH LIBRARY NEWS

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY: It is time for us to be thinking about the Bible Study which
will start in September.
A seminary student was given the assignment to count all the promises of God found in scripture. He sur-
prised the professor when he came up with the number of 7487. I have no idea if this is correct and neither
did the professor but it does point out that God gave us promises and we know he always keeps them. This
year we are going to be studying the most important of those promises given to us. The name of the study is
Unshakeable Hope. It’s a great study by Max Lucado and will give us a lot to think about.
If you are interested in this study, we meet the second Wednesday morning of each month from 10:00 am to
12:00 noon starting in September and finishing in April. We would love to have you as part of our study
group. I will need to order the books by the 15th of August so I can get them to you by the first week in
September. If you would like to be part of the group and already have this fabulous book, just let me know
when you talk to me about the study.
I am really looking forward to this year of study on the promises of God. Please give me a call or talk to me
at church about attending.

Faith community across time
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of wit-
nesses, let us also ... run with perseverance the race that is set
before us” (Hebrews 12:1, NRSV). Inspired by this, Paul Ham-
mer writes in The Word Among Us: “In the Bible, faith is never
a matter simply for an isolated individual. It involves a commu-
nity of persons that stretches back into the past, embraces peo-
ple in the present and anticipates a fellowship in the future.
Faith involves a ‘cloud of witnesses’ to God’s continuing faith-
fulness.
