Two Faces of Bangkok, Thailand

East meets west in Bangkok, a city of modernskyscrapers with billboards and buildings wrapped inadvertisements for upscale skin products, the latestHollywood release or jaunty German sports cars.Nearby, water buffalo wade in rice paddies and chil-

dren kick off shoes atcrumbling temples tovenerate Buddha.

At the airport, wepull onto the Bang NaExpressway, a six-laneelevated highway. At34-miles long, it’s oneof the longest bridgesin the world. Eventhough the “bridge”freeway is above thenational highway, bothcontain bumper-to-

bumper traffic, and I’m surprised to see that most of the vehicles appearnew. “The economy here must be pretty darn good,” I think to myself, focus-ing on the streaming feed displayed through the side window of our van. Icame to Thailand with some preconceived notions of rice patties, salt farmsand poor people with sad faces. I hadn’t expected electronic billboards fivetimes larger than any I’d ever seen, amazing feats of engineering such as thiselevated expressway or a culture of conspicuous consumption. Were theretwo faces of Bangkok?

Once on the ground, walk-ing the streets of Bangkok, Iexperience the other side.Smiling faces of vendors withskewers of meat roasting onstoves fastened to the backsof their bicycles, marketswhere you haggle for inexpen-sive clothes and massageshops where you get hour-long Thai massages for $8

(excluding tips.)

Bangkok is an interesting dichotomy of luxurious indulgences and affordable com-forts. You can savor a $2-3 lunch from happy street vendors for which the city isfamous, and later that evening enjoy a topnotch meal on the rooftop of one of themodern skyscrapers. The Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, where we spend our firstthree nights, offers an amazing buffet where we sample and learn the names oflocal Thai food so that when venturing out onto alleyways, we can knowledgablysample street eats. The 5-star hotel offers a rooftop bar in their M Club Lounge onthe 27th floor, but their new rooftop restaurant, Akira Back and A Bar, on the verytop of the hotel opens January 2018. I can’t wait to try it out.

Stepping Out

Instead, my new friends withwhom I’m traveling and I step outto the swanky Moon Bar andVertigo at the Banyan TreeBangkok. After the elevatordeposits us on the 60th floor, wetip-toe up two flights of outdoorstairways to the rooftopbar/restaurants. The wind teasesmy hair as I sip an Aroi Mak, theThai-inspired signature cocktail

that included basil, ginger liquor and coconut water, in the outdoor bar.

Bangkok’s cosmopolitan cityscapesparkles below for a dizzying effect as I drink ina different face of Bangkok than the one I discovered on the streets below. Each taste is multi-layered like a fine wine, yet each flavor is exact and doesn’thave that stewed characteristic of some Thai food. Because the urban zone is soclose to the agricultural area, food in Bangkok is surprisingly fresh. I am soimpressed.

The city also offers two faces when it comes to shopping. The next day, I’m star-tled to discover that Bangkok offers some of the best label shopping in the world:Armani, Dior, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Ted Baker are a fewnames to drop. 23rd issue. Unfortunately CA is dealing with

wildfires again.)

This article is written with the devastating

events in Northern California fresh on my

mind and the fear that the same thing could

happen here in Coconino County. There

have been many articles in the Pinewood

News and warnings given at meetings for

years here in Munds Park but very little has

been done to mitigate the conditions that

exist.

Our Fire Chief, John Welsch, has said many

times that Munds Park has 10 times the

number of Ponderosa Pine trees that we

should have for our area. Many residents

that I have talked to said they did not want

to remove any trees because they wanted

the look of the “Natural Forest”. Sadly, the

natural forest look disappeared about a

hundred years ago when the government

decided to extinguish all wildfires as quickly

as possible instead of letting the fires burn

out the undergrowth. Nature had been

doing this for thousands of years and big,

out of control wildfires did not occur. Just

another case of people interfering with

nature bringing really bad results.

I have also heard responses like “I’m not

reducing the fuels on my property….I have

insurance in case my house burns up”. But

how about the houses around that proper-

ty; what if other home owners do not have

insurance, or at least enough to cover

everything. And even if you have insur-

ance, there will be things lost in the fire,

some that will be irreplaceable, memories,

heirlooms, and important papers or pic-

tures. Then there would be the time it

takes to replace the house after insurance

money is available.

An important consideration is the danger

we put our firefighters in, both local and

the federal staff, trying to fight the fire.

How can we ever forget the hotshots from

Prescott that perished in the fire? Do you

want to contribute to that kind of sacrifice

because of your reluctance to spend some

time in making your property fire safe?

Everyone in Munds Park should “sign up” to

reduce the fuels on their property; the

Pinewood Fire Department has been offer-

ing for years to do an assessment, for free,

to recommend what you can do to make

your property fire safe.

The biggest fire in the Napa Valley started

just northwest of the town of Calistoga at

the head of the valley. This is my home

town where I went to school and have

remained close friends with my classmates,

and school mates, for the past 67 years

since I was a freshman in high school. I go

back home yearly to attend reunions and to

help a longtime friend at his small winery

outside of town a couple of miles. The

Tubbs fire, as it was named, started on

Tubbs Lane which is a widely traveled road

going east-west across the valley. My

friends winery is, rather was, a mile to the

northwest and was completely burned to

the ground in the first hour or less. All

buildings, storage cellar, 15,000 gallons of

wine, vehicles, machinery, trees, and some

grape vines all perished in the intense fire

whipped by very high winds. In a short

time, 30 years of dedicated work in the

wine industry was gone along with family

items that are irreplaceable. I would be

remiss if I didn’t mention that my buddy,

the winery cat, was trapped inside the win-

ery when it burned.

Fortunately, the town made it without

damage although it was evacuated for a

few days when it was thought that the fire

was going to turn because of the wind and

come back on itself. It went instead further

to the west where it burned many hun-

dreds of homes in the north Santa Rosa

area 17 miles from Calistoga. Some of my

friends were evacuated there and one did

lose her home. The latest count of

destroyed structures is 7,000 in Northern

California….almost incomprehensible! Let’s

try to prevent the same thing here by biting

the bullet and make your property fire safe.

Help is available at the Pinewood Fire

Department so utilize them as soon as pos-

sible.

The next MPCW meeting will be on

February 21, 2018, 6:30pm, at the PFD sta-

tion, weather permitting. Invited guests

include personnel from the sheriff’s office,

Coconino National Forest, and Public Works

along with Supervisor Matt Ryan. There is

information for the program utilizing the

PPOA website www.pinewoodppoa.org and

clicking on the MPCW tab. The PPOA sup-

ports the MPCW program with funds to

cover most of the costs associated with the

program.

The holidays are in full swing. FromHalloween on it seems there is some food cen-tered gathering or happening. Don’t getstressed if you are hosting. Instead, using care-ful planning and in-advance preparations, youcan be the Perle Mesta of your neighborhood.(And if you know who I’m referring to, wel-come to my generation!)

To plan how much to make, my rule of thumbis to assume each guest will eat one or two ofeach dish offered and will sample the sweets soI make a lot of mini dessert options. This col-umn focuses on a Happy Hour menu.

And let’s face it, they’re coming to be with youand not to evaluate the food. Much of this canbe done a day or two in advance and reheated ifnecessary. But keep it plentiful, colorful, andeasy on you and they’ll be impressed and youwon’t be stressed.

QC Tip #40 Happier Holidays happen witheasier entertaining.

Throw in a couple of prepared items like thetaquitos and/or egg rolls from frozen section ofthe store. There also are other items you mightlike. Start in the frozen section first then fill inwith some of these:

Shrimp with Cocktail SauceThaw shrimpMix 1 cup catsup with the juice of half a lemonand 2-4 tablespoons horseradish (adjust to yourtaste). Stir. Let sit for a couple of hours.

MeatballsBag of frozen meatballs and jar of red pepperjellyCoat meatballs in zipper bag. Cook on low inmicrowave for four hours.

Mushrooms with StuffingBuy the boxed stuffing mix and prepare asdirected but put in another two tablespoonsbutter. Take the stem out of mushrooms and fillwith stuffing. Bake for about 10 minutes at 350degrees.

Sharon’s Bruschetta3 Roma tomatoes2 cloves garlic10 basil leaves cut in ribbons2 T olive oilAsiago cheese1 loaf refrigerator French bread baked then cutinto 18 (or so) slices.

In small bowl mix everything but oil, cheese,and bread.Brush bread slices with olive oil and sprinkleon some cheese.Bake in 350 degree oven for a few minutesuntil cheese begins to melt.Remove from oven and spoon on tomato mix-ture. Sprinkle top with more cheese.

Kielbasa Cut into rounds about 1/2” thick and brown onboth sides. Have a dish of toothpicks for serv-ing.Cheese Platter Buy the box of crackers with different kinds ofcrackers. Slice up a variety of interestingcheeses paired with a bowl of grapes.

Veggies and Dip Put a bowl in the middle of a platter and fillwith dressing (ranch or something else).Cover the platter with a broccoli base cut intobite size pieces.On top of the broccoli, dot the surface withcherry tomatoes and a few cauliflower pieces.At the bottom, make a bow from red bell pep-per. It will look like a wreath!

Puff Pastry DessertsGet a box of puff pastry sheets and one of 24puff pastry cups.

Bake the puff pastry cups and when cool put ateaspoon of fig jam (or other favorite) into thecup. Top with blue cheese crumbles.

Thaw one (or both) puff pastry sheets. Open upon pastry mat and roll thinner. Spread a layer of Nutella over the top but notall the way to the edges. Sprinkle with finelychopped walnuts. Roll up each pastry sheet tightly and placeseam side down on a baking sheet. Bake forabout 15-20 minutes until nicely browned. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar andcut into 1” slices for serving.

Fruit and CakeBowl of kiwi and strawberries to spoon overbought pound/angelfood cake crumbles in ashot or liqueur glass

Candy Pretzel Rods24 rod pretzels, 1 c choc chips, 1 cup whitechoc chips, 2T oil (divided), sprinkles or othertoppingsMelt each chocolate in its own bowl and addoil. Stir to blend.Dip one end of pretzel rods into chocolate. Rollin sprinkles (or crushed candy cane or othertopping). Chill.

Holiday appropriate drinks. Make one seasonal drink option, like eggnog(both naughty and nice) or peppermint martini,and offer wine, beer, and soft drinks rather thana full bar. Everyone serves him or herself.

Lane restrictions beginning this week on

Milton Road in Flagstaff

Permit work scheduled from Phoenix Avenue to Mike's Pike

Street through Dec. 15

Flagstaff drivers should plan for restrictions on a short stretch

of Milton Road during daytime hours beginning next week as

the Arizona Department of Transportation has permitted work

in the right of way.

This permit work is scheduled to occur on northbound Milton

Road between Phoenix Avenue and Mike’s Pike Street Monday

through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Dec. 4 through

Friday, Dec. 15. The following restrictions will be in place:

The northbound travel lanes will be shifted and traffic control

devices will guide motorists through the work zone.

Left turns will be prohibited in the work zone and the speed

limit will be reduced to 30 mph.

Restrictions will be lifted during overnight hours.

Drivers should expect delays and consider alternate routes.

Schedules are subject to change based on weather and other

MARY CLOSET’S

Wilma Lentz

Mary loved to shop and she was always quite well dressed.

She found it made her more relaxed whenever she felt stressed.

One day she thought her closet said, "I've really had enough.

You'd better do some cleaning out before you buy more stuff!"

And Mary knew the time had come to weed her closet out.

So many clothes she didn't wear, of that she had no doubt.

She started looking for the things that she should give away--

Those jeans she'd kept forever hoping she'd lose weight some day....

That jacket she had never liked, it fit a little funny,

but it was hard to let it go---it'd cost a lot of money.

Those purple shoes with pointy toes were really out of style.

She took them from the closet and began to make a pile.

Mary's hand was ruthless and the pile just grew and grew

Of clothing that had gathered dust, things that were nearly new.

Scarves that she had never worn, T-shirts, shoes and handbags.

Some of these, she noticed, were still carrying their tags.

She opened drawers of clothes she'd stored

that she had long outgrown,

remembering times and places and the many friends she'd known.

A sparkly top, a velvet skirt she hadn't worn in years,

The memories of good times had almost brought her to tears.

A cocktail dress, now much too snug--she was a little torn.

With a sad smile she viewed the pile and felt a bit forlorn.

She took it to the guest room, opened up the closet door,

saw a small amount of space, dumped the pile upon the floor.

She went back and viewed her closet and she savored all that space!

And Mary went out shopping with a smile upon her face!

Fire Department Members from Years Past

After my profile on the New Fire

Chief, Josh Tope, one of my readers sug-

gested I do profiles on the other

Department members. That was a very

good suggestion and one I am going to

work on for the summer issues. But right

now, I am in the progress of reviewing

older issues of the Pinewood News.

While doing that, I found profiles I did of

department members in years past. For

this issue I would like to reprint three of

those articles.

First is Gina Kuemper- She has been

on the department since 1989, She start-

ed in the capacity of Relief Secretary and

moved on to EMT in June 1990 and FFII

in October 1994. She was a CPR instruc-

tor for four years. Although she has

taken leave of absence from the office

work, she keeps active every month as

an EMT/Firefighter. She sells Avon and

works with Bill, her husband, on mort-

gage loans. Gina may be a grandmother,

but don’t ever underestimate her capa-

bilities. She knows what she is doing!

Unfortunately, Gina lost her five-year

long battle with cancer in May of 2013.

She was a courageous and impactful

volunteer on our department and a

beloved member of my family.

Our next Perspective is David

Fontana. Dave joined the Department in

October of 1987 and re-certified EMT in

1988. He then upgraded to Paramedic in

June 1995. I said recertified because

when DHS began numbering new EMT’s

in the 70’s, Dave’s certification number

was 34! This not only fascinates me but

shows his interest in this business has

been ongoing for years. Dave is a

Driver/Engineer covering shifts for us

and works full time for Guardian

Ambulance where he was just put in as

PIO (Public Information Officer). This

won’t be anything new for Dave either

and some of you may recognize him as

“Dewey the Weather God” 0n KZGL a

few years ago. Kay and Dave have 3 kids,

two at home. Jamie is 16 and works at

Pinewood Pizza. Jessica Is 12 and is

enjoying summer and their new puppy.

Jason is currently in Flagstaff, but is look-

ing in to moving back into the Park.

Jason worked on the golf course here a

couple of years ago. Unfortunately,

Dave is fighting his own battle with can-

cer and can use all the support and

prayers we can send.

And last but not least is Joe Toth. Joe

is my son and I couldn’t be prouder of

him. He joined the department when he

was a senior in high school. He took and

certified EMT in October 1993 and also

completed Firefighter II certification in

October 1993. He would like to get into

the fire service full-time, but most

departments have an age requirement

of 21. One more year Joe! Though he

has a lot of learning to do yet, he’s

already very knowledgeable and capa-

ble. Joe did continue on and was hired

full time at Pinewood, but he moved on

to Flagstaff Fire where he is a Captain

/Paramedic. In between helping his

wife, Margie, with my five grandkids,

he is a SWAT Medic and teaches EMT at

Coconino Community College. I was

proud of him in 1993 and even more

proud of him now.

Mary has a big problem! She loves to shop, but her closet is telling her that she

will simply have to start getting rid of some of her "stuff" or build another clos-

et. This is a real dilemma for Mary. What shall she do? Read and find out!

Willard Springs Transfer Station:Smaller Bills (and End-of-Day Loads) Are Always Appreciated

As you know, the Willard Springs Transfer Station is now on winter hoursand open only on the first and third Saturdays of the month between 9:00a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This schedule will be in effect through next March.

During this winter schedule, we ask that residents bring in their largerwaste loads before 2:30 p.m. Larger loads include pickup truck or trailerloads measuring more than 8 feet long, 5 feet wide and 2 feet high.Understandably, larger waste loads take a longer time to process thansmaller waste loads. This presents a challenge for (Transfer StationOperator) Anthony Nelson at the end of the day. Bringing larger loads inbefore 2:30 p.m. gives Anthony adequate time to process them withoutgoing into overtime, which increases operating costs for the station.

Also, smaller bills are always appreciated at Willard Springs. Due to thetransfer station’s limited bank, it is very difficult to make change for $50bills or larger. For more information, please Solid Waste Program ManagerRon Hollamon at 928 679-8300.

THE GREAT PINECONE DROPCelebrate New Year’s Eve in Flagstaff

Visitors in Flagstaff for New Year’s Eve should not miss the city’s

traditional countdown celebration in downtown Flagstaff on

December 31. Like a giant holiday ornament, the Weatherford

Hotel’s glistening giant Pinecone has been hoisted high atop the his-

toric building with a digital countdown ticking away below it.

As Flagstaff’s traditional New Year’s Eve symbol for 16 years, the

Great Pinecone is to Flagstaff what the glitzy giant ball is to New

York City. Each year thousands of holiday revelers pour into the

streets of historic downtown to see the 70-pound, six-foot, lighted

aluminum creation.

During the celebration there will be two countdowns and pinecone

lowerings: one at 10 p.m. to coincide with New York’s Times Square

celebration and another at midnight to mark Arizona’s magical

moment. Local personality Joe Harting will lead the crowd in song

and countdown as the Weatherford Hotel dazzles with a light show

and the City of Flagstaff illuminates the sky with fireworks.

The Great Pinecone Drop event is free and appropriate for all ages.

Attendees are encouraged to carpool or use public transportation to

and from the event.

Free parking is available just a few blocks from the event at

Flagstaff City Hall and Wheeler Park (211 W. Aspen Ave.) as well as

the Phoenix Ave. parking lot (116 W. Phoenix Ave.) just south of the

train tracks. There will be handicap accessible parking in the Leroux

Street lot, which can be accessed that night by turning north on

Leroux from Route 66, then turning right into the lot halfway up the

block. Please note: portions of San Francisco Street, Leroux Street

and Aspen Avenue will be closed to traffic beginning at 8 p.m. on

December 31.

*Please note, this is an outdoor event and the average temperature

at this time of year is usually 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit, warm cloth-

ing including heavy jacket, hat, gloves and scarf are recommended.

New I-17 electronic signs tackle speeding north of Phoenix

Speed-feedback messages added in Black Canyon City area

PHOENIX – Sending a safety message about dangerous speeding on thesteep, winding stretch of Interstate 17 in the Black Canyon City area north ofPhoenix, the Arizona Department of Transportation has activated six newelectronic signs to tell drivers they’re traveling over the speed limit.

These speed-feedback signs, featuring theposted speed limit and a digital screen, displayvehicle speeds to I-17 drivers in areas betweenBlack Canyon City and the Sunset Point RestArea. The signs, which primarily track traffic inthe left lane, display vehicle speeds starting 10mph below the speed limit as well as “too fast”or “slow down” messages focused toward thosewho are driving above the limit.

ADOT installed the permanent speed feedback signs earlier this year aspart of a $1.1 million I-17 safety project between New River and CampVerde. They were activated in late November.

A study conducted in advance of the I-17 safety project found thatDepartment of Public Safety troopers cited “speed too fast for conditions” asthe leading driver violation in more than 40 percent of I-17 crashes thatoccurred in the Black Canyon City area between 2011 and 2015.

The new speed-feedback signs serve as a safety tool in an area wherecrashes and other incidents, including disabled vehicles, can cause closuresand lengthy delays along I-17’s winding grade.

The three northbound I-17 speed-feedback signs are located near TableMesa Road (milepost 236), Coldwater Road (milepost 245) and Bumble BeeRoad (milepost 247). The southbound I-17 signs are located near SunsetPoint Rest Area (milepost 251) and approaching curves on the downhill gradenear Bumble Bee Road and Coldwater Road.

Other features of ADOT’s I-17 safety project north of Phoenix include fournew digital message boards installed earlier this year to alert drivers to high-way conditions and provide safety messages. Crews also have posted addi-tional signs to advise drivers about highway curves.

Speed limits along I-17 generally range from 65 to 75 mph north ofPhoenix, with lower advisory speeds on signs in some areas with curves.

ADOT also is studying possible improvements to the I-17 corridor betweenAnthem Way and State Route 69 at Cordes Junction before finalizing plansfor adding new lanes and other safety enhancements.

With the help of funds from the Maricopa Association of Governments,which serves as the metropolitan planning organization for the Phoenix area,projects to add new I-17 lanes in areas between Anthem and Black CanyonCity are now scheduled for construction in the years 2021-22.

The concept of building “Demand Lanes” between Black Canyon City andSunset Point, for use as needed by the busiest direction of travel or in theevent of a closure, is just one idea being considered for that mountainous sec-tion of I-17. Funding for improvements in that area hasn’t been identified.

Let the Merriment BeginBy Annie Weissman

I’m a Jew who married a Christian. When we divorced, I also

divorced Christmas trees and decorations. I do put up Hannukah decora-

tions, but I miss all the Christmas merriment. Last year I had a few

events to attend but this year I

decided to be proactive and plan

some.

Scottsdazzle is a light

installation on the Scottsdale

waterfront. I went with my

youngest son and his family.

The prisms were amazing and

the giant ornament enchanting.

I took four friends to the

Desert Botanical Garden’s

Luminarias. It was a fun-filled evening with five bands, Native

American dancers, music and stories, and the traditional candlelit walk-

ways. I was delighted to listen to

my favorite Flagstaff band, The

Mother Road Trio. It was a terrific

way to get into the season and give

my friends experiences instead of

material gifts.

I’m also attending a

Christmas Concert given by The

Valley Women’s Ensemble. A

friend of mine sings with the

group. I love Christmas music.

For many years, the women of the family went to the Teddy Bear

Tea at the Ritz-Carlton. It was sold to another company, so we couldn’t

do it last year. I took the initiative and investigated holiday teas. We’re

going to the Gingerbread Tea at the Arizona Biltmore. It’s an occasion

to dress up and eat lots of tiny tea sandwiches, scones and pastries.

I’m also telling Hannukah and Christmas stories to one of my

granddaughter’s classes. I hope to do the puppet show of “Claude the

Dog,” with the students manipulating the puppets.

I always help my

granddaughters make

holiday gifts. The candy

cane wreaths were not

great, but the ginger-

bread man pillows and

the gingerbread man

refrigerator magnets

were easy enough but

challenging and fun.

On Thursday I’m making Oreo truffles with

Donna and we’ll package them for gifts.

I’ve been crocheting rag rugs to keep me

away from the ice cream when I watch televi-

sion. And I’ll put on the

Hannukah dinner,

including latkes, and playing dreidel with the

kids.

What I learned is that to have fun at

Christmas time, I need to get out there and plan

some of the activities, not just rely on others to

invite me.

ily and friends, I just wanted to wish my Munds Park Family a joyous and

healthy holiday.

With the winter approaching and staying inside more than outside, it

New Winter Parking Ordinance & “No Parking” Signage

Although we’re currently in one of the driest warm spells in recent memo-

ry, I wanted to share some important information with you regarding the

County’s new winter parking ordinance for when winter decides to arrive.

As you know, the popularity of weekend winter recreation throughout

Coconino County has continued to grow tremendously during the last sever-

al years. One significant downside of this activity is the traffic congestion

created by winter visitors along state highways and in County communities

like Munds Park. This congestion creates safety hazards for these visitors

and impacts area residents’ quality of life through illegal parking, littering

and trespassing on private property.

To help reduce the impacts of winter recreation this winter, the Board of

Supervisors recently amended the County’s 30-year-old winter parking ordi-

nance. The new ordinance, 2017-11, prohibits parking at all times along

County maintained rights-of-way between November 1 and April 1 and

allows for the civil enforcement of parking restrictions either by citation (not

less than a $200 fine) or towing or both. This new ordinance can be found at

www.coconino.az.gov/WinterParkingOrdinance2017-11.

To help educate winter recreation visitors about the new winter parking

ordinance, Public Works Sign Team is installing new “No Parking” signage

at approximately 80 locations on County roads, including several in the

Munds Park area.

Our hope is that these signs will help to alleviate illegal snow play park-

ing in Munds Park and other communities. But remember…parking viola-

tions are enforcement issues that needs to be managed by the appropriate

law enforcement entity. If you need to report a parking issue, then please do

so via one of the following numbers:

• For County roads like Pinewood Boulevard, please call the Coconino

County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at (928) 774-4523 and choose Option #1.

• For I-17 and other state highways, please call the Arizona

Department of Public Safety (DPS) dispatch at (928) 773-3600.

PHOENIX ‒ As far as the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor

Vehicle Division is aware, Santa’s sleigh doesn’t need a license plate. But

Saint Nick could put one in your stocking this year because specialty plates

make terrific gifts.

“Every day is like Cyber Monday at the MVD because specialty plates are

always a great deal and can easily be purchased online, even as a gift,” said

MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser-Richards. “Not only

that, but the sales raise millions of dollars for worthy causes every year.”

Anyone may purchase a plate for another person. All that’s needed are the

last two digits of the vehicle identification number, the customer name and

address and the number of the plate being replaced. The new plate will be

mailed to the recipient.

Ordering online is the easiest method and can be done any time at

ServiceArizona.com, where customers may browse the many selections

available. If your selection requires additional documentation and you are

unable to order online you may fill out a special plate application.

There are more than 40 specialized plate styles designed to raise money

for worthy causes. Themes include honoring veterans, organ donation

awareness, environmental causes, tribal programs, university scholarships

and support of charitable organizations for professional sports franchises,

among many others.

Specialty plates typically cost $25 with an annual $25 renewal fee. Of that,

$17 is directed each year to the charitable cause or service the plate repre-

sents. Personalizing a specialty plate carries an additional fee.

The specialty plate program began in 1989, and in the most recent fiscal

year sales generated nearly $10 million for charitable causes and services

in Arizona.

Bowser-Richards added, “Buying a specialty plate as a gift may seem a bit

untraditional, but since these plates raise millions for important causes it

really is a gift that represents the best parts of the holiday season.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

It’s been a wonderful year in MundsPark. Now we look forward to themany celebrations and gatherings offriends and family.

Fortunately, we have a little extratime this year with Thanksgivinghaving fallen so soon. Every yearthe Christmas season comes andgoes so quickly that it rushes by us.We are busy shopping, partying andvisiting family often creating achaotic atmosphere where Christ isforgotten.

When the hustle and bustle of theholiday starts to get you down, justlook out the window, take a walk,but most of all take a deep breath andsay, “Thank you Lord for allowingme to live in such a wonderful com-munity.”

Hopefully, we will have some snowby the time this article is published.The snow in Munds Park is just awe-some. In the winter, the communitybecomes a quiet place of beautywhen the snow is falling. LakeO’Dell becomes a frozen fantasyland and Pinewood Boulevard apostcard picture.

In John 3:16-17 (NIV) we read, “16For God so loved the world that hegave his one and only Son, that who-ever believes in him shall not perishbut have eternal life. 17 For God didnot send his Son into the world tocondemn the world, but to save theworld through him.” This is the ulti-mate Christmas gift!

No matter where you spend thisChristmas, stop and say, “Thank youChrist for coming to earth for me.”

On the first Sunday of each monththe church offers Communion toall who have accepted Jesus Christas their personal Lord and Savior.This is an open Communion, whichmeans you do not have to be a mem-ber of the church to participate.

The second Sunday of each monthis potluck Sunday. Everyone is in-vited whether you bring food or not.This is a wonderful time to meetpeople in a casual environment,make new friends and enjoy tastyfood. The potluck follows the 10:30am Sunday service.
