Upcoming Speakers

January 6. Gordon Mar will talk about “Yellow Shadows On A Foreign Land”

In the 1800’s Chinese began coming to the NSW and Victoria colonies. During the gold rush in the 1860’s they came in their thousands. Practically all of them were men who would spend years in a hostile country seeking their fortune. Some of those men established relationships with white Australian women even siring children by them. I look at these relationships, how they came about and the community’s attitude towards these unions and their progeny. The children from those unions faced different fates some quite tragic. It took many years for inter racial mixing to be accepted in the way we see today. Nowadays it raises no murmurs.

February 3. “Excuse me Elizabeth your house is on fire.”In November 1992 a fire broke out in Windsor Castle and destroyed 100 rooms and some 900 years of history. It took five years to reconstruct it. Why? Could it have been averted? What lessons did we learn? What else did they find? What were the repercussions of the 50 million pounds needed to reconstruct it? What does the fire at Windsor Castle have to do with Australian Built Heritage?

Dennis Overton is a Churchill Fellow and an ANZAC Fellow and with the aid of a slide presentation (including those from the royal collection) discusses restoration problems associated with Windsor Castle and other prominent buildings in England including Westminster Abbry during his working fellowship overseas. 2

Brain exercise—the SODUKUThe object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?

The Last Riverboat Postman

What a perfect late November morning to join the Last Riverboat Postman as he made his deliveries to remote locations and settlements along the Hawkesbury River, topped off by a delicious meal of fish and chips on our return.

Pot Luck DinnersAs our first year of Pot Luck Dinners comes to a close, the groupings will be rearranged which gives the opportunity to welcome new members to this activity. How does it work? Groups of 4 couples come together about four times per year for lunch or dinner usually in one of their homes. (Two singles can form a ‘couple’) The host provides a main course and by agreement, the other couples provide predinner nibbles, entrée and desert. This is a great way to get to know other members a little better in a casual social environment as you can see from the photos of recent meals. What it is not! It is not a celebrity chef challenge but an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company over a home cooked meal regardless of your cooking expertise. To join a group, just let any of the committee members know of your interest.
