THE CHOICE Jesus said, “‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live’” (John 11:25, CSB).1

For seven hundred years or so, Israel yearned for the fulfillment of Isaiah 9:6. Prophetic promises infused the hopes and dreams of Yahweh’s faithful. But prolonged Babylonian exile, followed by seemingly unending, harsh Roman occupation, crushed expectancy and drained prayerful hearts of optimism. Then Bethlehem’s Baby appeared on the scene to cradle ancient aspirations. God’s very Son claimed messiahship, offering heaven-engendered freedom and everlasting life to all who would choose to credit His words as truth and His miracles as proof of His divinity. Jesus said, “‘If I am not doing my Father’s works, don’t believe me. But if I am doing them and you don’t believe me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand that the Father is in me and I in the Father’” (John 10:37-38, CSB). Jesus appealed directly to the human will, saying, “‘Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe’” (John 20:29, CSB). Accept the Lord’s resurrecting power and live; reject it and know permanent spiritual captivity. His was an invitation to believe, even in the face of the seemingly impossible.

THE CHRIST, OUR LORD The Rabbi from Nazareth had always “been.” He was Deity, putting on shoes and walking the paths of mortal existence. Second Person of the Trinity, He was beloved of the Father (Matthew 3:17; 17:5); an earthly personification of God’s loving nature; and fulfiller of Divinity’s timeless, intervening, rescuing plan of deliverance and salvation. (John 1:10-16) Scripture calls the Master both Lord and Christ, two names with two separate (and often overlooked) connotations. A. W. Tozer writes: “No Christian believer should ever forget what the Bible says about the Person and the offices of the eternal Son, the Christ of God. ‘God hath made this same Jesus whom ye have crucified both Lord and Christ’ (Acts 2:36). Jesus means Savior; Lord means Sovereign; Christ means Anointed One.”2

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31, KJV) is a directive that demands acceptance of dual certainties:

1. Jesus, the ChristOrigen of Alexandria was one of the earliest church

fathers to denote Christ as the eternal, timeless, creative agency behind the universe. Jesus was Logos—matter bonded to Spirit. The Divine Presence infusing creation with God’s outlined plan of “reality.” Blueprint of infinity, love, and beauty resourcefully made visible. The Anointed One’s glory, cosmically revealed. “I am,” invading human history. (See John 1:1-3; 6:38,48-51; 8:12,23-24,58; 10:9-11; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1; Colossians 1:15-20; Ephesisans 1:9-12; and Romans 1:20.) It is Logos—Christ who rose from the dead. In the person of Jesus, yes, but completing God’s enduring, immortal purposes while mirroring the Father’s unalterable essence. Divine Presence sharing who He has always been with who we are.

2. Jesus, our LordThe title Lord does not refer to Jesus-as-prophesied-

Messiah. Rather, it is a confession of faith that sees the Son of God as Master of our lives: One to whom we surrender all we are and have as living sacrifices of praise. (Psalm 49:14; Hebrews 13:15) It presumes that, as His obedient servants, we give primary allegiance to His sovereignty/lordship in every aspect of our Christian discipleship. (Disciples are learners [literally]. Christ is Lord when we give Him our minds, predispositions, desires, motivations, goals, and priorities.)

THE CHRISTIAN LEGACY When we crown Christ as King of all we have and are (committing our willingness to do and be all that He commands and makes possible through His grace); when our deeds match our words; when we deny self-interests; when belief in the Lord becomes total submission to His will, then we are truly “people of the way.” The word Lord means ruler. When our confession of belief that Jesus is the Christ matches our confession that He is our Lord (ruling and reigning over our hearts and lives), then John 3:16 becomes a blessed reality. His Nativity results in our rebirth. And God’s only Son becomes our loving Savior, Redeemer, and Friend! In Jesus, Christ and Lord meet, and everlasting life is assured. When we choose to believe, the Son of God activates this timeless covenant: “‘Look, I am making everything new. … these words are faithful and true … It is done!’” (Revelation 21:5-6, CSB).

The song sung by morning stars the day our world was born!

On a manuscript of primordial chaos, the Artist of the ages dipped His creative pen into the inkwell of time and space and, from silent nothingness, filled His newly created universe with crescendos of divine love and life that sounded heaven’s music throughout the numberless, interplanetary corridors of star-strewn skies. Cosmic creativity at work, here—celestial imagination, inventiveness, and ingenuity! This magnificent creation overture set ablaze melodies and lyrics that reverberated throughout glory-lit heavens.

The Master Composer premiered an awe-inspiring work. Now, the most gifted of creative mortals must bow before, and answer to, the greatness of heaven’s spoken handiwork.

“Where were you when I established the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? What supports its foundations? Or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7, CSB).1

The Father of all creativity made the astronomical sing His story-song. He alone “commanded the morning” and

“assigned the dawn its place” (Job 38:12, CSB).

“God’s Story in the Skies” “God’s splendor is a tale that is told; his testament is written in the stars. Space itself speaks his story every day through the marvels of the heavens. His truth is on tour in the starry vault of the sky, showing his skill in creation’s craftsmanship. Each day gushes out its message to the next, night with night whispering its knowledge to all” (Psalm 19:1-2, TPT).2

And this stellar musical score was matched in beauty and impact by life-infusing lyrics—the Lord’s “instruction,” “testimony,” “precepts,” “commands,” and “ordinances.” (Psalm 19:7-9, CSB).

The song sung by heaven’s choirs the day Christ was born!

Everything created by God is autographed with His goodness. (Genesis 1:31) His “song” communicates the

good news (Isaiah 52:7; 61:1; Matthew 4:23; 24:14; Mark 1:15) of the Creator’s loving-kindness.(Psalm 25:10; 86:15; 101:1; 117:2) It is the same song (with new verses) heralded by angels the night that Jesus Christ came to earth as its newborn King. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!” (Luke 2:14, CSB).

Symphony, incarnated. “God with us.” (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23)

Let the recreative song be heard!

Transformative creativity still echoes from the heavenlies. Our Savior gives us a new song to sing—an anthem of spiritual victory and redemption. (Psalm 40:3; 96:1; 98:1; Revelation 5:9) In Him, forgiveness of sins means “newness of life” (Romans 6:4, KJV). We are recreated—rebirthed—to mirror His likeness.

“If anyone belongs to Christ, there is a new creation [the new creation has arrived; or that person has become a new creation]. The old things have gone; [look; behold] everything is made new [the new has come]!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).3

Blessedly, “we all become like mirrors who brightly reflect the glory of the Lord Jesus. We are being transfigured into his very image as we move from one brighter level of glory to another. And this glorious transfiguration comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18, TPT).

So, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say” … (Psalm 107:2, KJV)

“The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him” (Exodus 15:2, CSB).

Glorious Is Thy Name

Yahweh—the unutterable name! To Hebrew worshipers, the one true God was so transcendently independent of (and superior to) the material universe, both in essence/character and in power, His glory could not find adequate verbal expression. In the Old Testament, He who governs all was considered majestically distanced from the physical laws and creations over which He reigned. Unlike the plethora of contemporary deities of the era, Israel’s God was revealed to Moses as singularly deserving of adoration, and this only by way of four Hebrew consonants: YHWH. (Translated in Latin as “Jehovah.”) Deemed too inaccessible and sacred to be addressed adequately via human comprehension and the limitations of verbal praise, the name of “Yod Heh Vav Heh” was considered too holy to be spoken. According to historians, verbalizing the glorious One’s name was believed to be an act of blasphemy.

In Exodus 3:14, God introduced Himself to Moses in terms of a verb of being. He called Himself “I am,” an abbreviated form of “I am that I am.” This self-defining appellation describes the majesty and scope of the divine nature (which can only be labeled “glorious”).

“I am” the one and only true God!

Consider this commandment: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3; Deuteronomy 5:7, KJV) A claim of distinctive worthiness, here! Only YHWH had no beginning and has no ending. (He simply is and always will be.) He is absolute reality. Nothing exists without His creation and will/consent (that is, independent of His control). And nothing compares to His majestic character and power. He alone defines goodness, beauty, righteousness, truth, and excellence. Only He is worthy of worship!

In the New Testament, Jesus declares …

“I am” the Light of the world!

The Second Person of the Trinity—God, Incarnate—is reflecting in John 8:12-20 the same message we read in John 1 (where “Light” is explained as “Life”). “‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life’” (John 8:12, CSB). “In Him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John 1:4, CSB).

“I am” the way! Jesus, Himself, taught that the only path to eternal life and heaven was through faith in Him, and He was one with the Father. (He was/is God, John 14:6)

“I am” the truth! The Bible insists that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10, CSB). God is omniscient. His limitless, all-inclusive knowledge makes His every declaration, revelation, command, and promise indisputably and exclusively reliable. He is the truth about the universe, about philosophical disputes, about meaning in life, about ourselves, and about His own nature.

“I am” the life! Those who believe in Christ-as-God gain eternal life. (John 14:6) Our faith in Jesus gifts this sin-and-death-plagued planet with the very life that our Lord shares with His Father in heaven. (The word eternal denotes both duration and quality.)

“I am” Alpha and Omega! God alone is “the beginning and the end” (Revelation 1:8; 22:13), not only of time, but of everything good. (Genesis 1:4; Psalm 119:68) Only He delineates the infinite contours of wisdom, power, majesty, justice, holiness, mercy, and love. He has always been, and forever will be, the source and endless activator of all that can be known as definitive reality.

The ancients were right about YHWH. There is an indescribable, sacred, and glorious exclusivity about His very being!

Jesus addressed His Father: “Hallowed be thy name.For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever” (Matthew 6:9,13, KJV).

Glorious God! Glorious name!
