The mid 1950’s produced some of the finest of the modern classic automobiles and, of course, the outstanding Cadillac Eldorado was right up front. The 1957 model and also 1958 Eldorado were the only two years that these cars had the sleekly rounded rear fender and deck contour trimmed with broad sculptured stainless steel beauty panels and the pointed ‘shark’ style fins pointing toward the back of the cars.

Tommy and Linda Jenkins Eldorado is a fine example of a well restored and built ‘resto-mod’ in that it features a 425 Cadillac motor with 1979 Cadillac drive train. Custom instruments and steering wheel have been introduced into the driving compartment and the car also has later modern suspension.

Tommy found this car advertised on line in the St. Louis area about two and a half years ago. He restored and upgraded the Eldorado to a beautiful show car in his own restoration shop in Hampstead, New Hampshire called Hot Rods & Customs which Tommy operated for over 20 years. The cars that Tommy turned out from that shop were top quality and many were featured in nationally distributed magazines and his shop was particularly well known in the New England area and points beyond. Tommy is the ‘go to’ man when it comes to these type of restorations as well as racing vehicles as well as other types of collector vehicles.

The Jenkins just recently moved to Port Charlotte about 12 weeks ago establishing

their Florida year round home. The moved from Chester, New Hampshire, their former home for many years.

Some time back Tommy and Linda met George and Bunny Nubile and George was instrumental in helping the Jenkins in getting settled with their cars and encouraging them to join our club. They also came along with us at our club luncheon in August at the I-Hop Restaurant in Venice. We all extend a warm welcome to you both.

In the summer of 2008 while at a car show looking at two Cobras Jim inno-cently (so he says) mentioned to his wife Lori that when he was younger he used to think someday he would get a kit and build one. That year was Jims 60th birth-day and Lori masterminded the acquisi-tion of a Cobra kit and frame….as a sur-prise birthday present with help from car friends. Fast forward and a year after the “present” Jim with the help of friends had pretty much completed the car and it was ready for painting which took 3 more months. So in the photo above you see the final beautifully completed Cobra of Jim and Lori’s sporting a 302/350 motor by Engine Factory mated to a 5 speed Tremec transmission and completing the drivetrain is a Ford 8.8 Tru-Trac rear end.

If you have a copy of the 2012 Snap-On Tools calendar you will find it featured for the month of Feb-ruary. To say that this wonderful car has won many very special awards and trophies is an understatement. The car has I t’s own trophy and award room in the Clarks home in Woodmere Lakes.

Jim and Lori moved to Venice as per-manent residents in 2011 from Fleet-wood, Pennsylvania which is near Red-ding. Jim also had a passion for “dirt track” racing in his younger days and has many plaques attesting to his being a “guest” driver on many of our nations famous raceways while wheeling some very famous and expensive race cars around the ovals.

In 2011 Jim and Lori went to one of Lances Albertson’s shows and Lance told him about our club. Now Gary, our club president who we all sympathize with due to his minor difficulty with hearing “heard” someone 6 car show rows away from him “whispering” about looking for a car club. Jim was whisper-ing to Julie Petree and Gary appeared with club application forms in hand in a flash. Gary has told us that he can read lips across a football field. Anyway Jim and Lori became more of our wonderful members that we already have in our club. He stated that he likes all the varie-ty of things we do and we all appreciate that Jim and Lori and look for many years of good times with you both and that great “Cobra”.

Venice FL Region AACA Directory & Messages

We are finally here only a few days away from show time. The past year has certainly gone by in a hurry. If you have not been contacted or volunteered to be

a judge or help set up in the early morning please try to come over to the park and help us set up. We sure can use all of the help that we can get. There is a lot of work to be done early and very little time to accomplish all of it before the show cars start coming in. To all of you that have volunteered please except my thanks for your time and work. Hopefully the weather will hold up for us again this year. With the numbers of preregistered cars at the time that I am writing this letter we are looking forward to another great and very successful show.

Please mark your calendars for our General Membership Meeting on Monday, October 12th at 7:00 PM. I know many of our snowbird members will be returning so we should have a good turn out. It will be good to see many of our members that have been away since last spring. Richard Disanto will be out of town for this meeting so Chuck Ford will present a program for our enjoyment. At this meeting Rod Dimon will again read the ballot for next years prospective club officers. If anyone would like to volunteer for an office or nominate someone for an office you can do it at this meeting or give Rod a call before the meeting. Just remember that before you nominate someone you must obtain their permission first. We will read the final ballot at the November meeting and have an election at that meeting.

For our members that did not know the ‘Ideal Classic Cars, Car Show’ will resume on Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 to 2:00 PM. I know many of you have missed this show and will be glad to see it back

The October 28th monthly lunch will be held at the Perkins Restaurant located on by-pass #41 and Center Rd. at 1:00 PM as usual. Please try to attend as these lunches are great events.

Next months Club Tour will be held on Saturday, November 21st starting at the Walmart in Venice parking lot with a drive along the old historic roads used by horse and buggies of yesteryear. We will meet at 9:30 AM and leave at 10:00 AM. At the end of our tour we will meet at the Phillipi Creek Oyster Bar Restaurant for lunch. Please try to join us in a trip down memory lane. See flier for details.

On Saturday, October 17th our club will participate in the Annual Sun Fiesta Parade thru downtown Venice. We will stage at the Rialto Shopping Center at 8:30 AM and move to our spot downtown at 9:00 AM with the start of the parade at 10:00 AM. To register for a spot in the parade call Bill Trier at 223-1556.

Please feel free to call me anytime if you have any ideas on how we can make our club bigger and better and more enjoyable. We need everyone’s help and input to make our club prosper in the future.

Thanks,

Gary [email protected]

Lagonda was founded as a company in Staines, Surrey, by an American, Wilbur Gunn in 1906. He had originally built motorcycles on a small scale in the garden of his house in Staines with reasonable success. In 1907 he launched his first car, the Torpedo. In 1913 Lagonda introduced an advanced small car which by 1914 featured a panhard rod, a rivetted monocoque body and the first ever fly-off handbrake.

After the end of World War I the 11.1 continued with a larger 1400 cc engine and standard electric lighting as the 11.9 until 1923 and the updated 12 until 1926. Following Wilbur Gunn’s death in 1920, the three existing directors headed by Colin Parbury took charge. All was not well financially by 1935, but the company was rescued by Alan P. Good. He also persuaded W. O. Bentley to leave Rolls-Royce and join Lagonda as designer. Bently swallowed his distaste for the primitive conditions of Lagonda’s

factory, and got to work on the new engine that was to become his masterpiece, the V-12 Rapide, launched in 1937.

In 1947 the company was taken over by David Brown and moved in with Aston Martin, which he had also bought, in Feltham, Middlesex. Production restarted with the last prototypes from W. O. Bentley, the 1948 2.6-Litre with new chassis featuring fully independent suspension. Its new 2580 cc twin overhead cam straight 6 became the basis for the Lagonda engines of the 1950s. The engine grew to 3 litres in 1953 and continued to be available until 1958. Many thought that the marque had disappeared, but in 1961 the Rapide name was resurrected with a four-door saloon based on the contemporary Aston Martin DB4, with an aluminium body by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan and was produced until 1965.

2nd Annual “Poker Run” TourVenice Region AACA - Spetember 19, 2015

Nancy Vandegrift did a wonderful job, taking us through uncharted territory in South Venice. The tour ventured to “The Audubon Rookery, Maxine Barrett Park, The Senior Friendship Center, Shamrock Park, South Venice Beach Ferry and culminated at “The Shamrock Cafe” for Lunch. Along the way each car on tour received a playing card and at the Shamrock Cafe drivers reveled their playing card hands. The person with the best hand was declared the winner.
