BATA Don Jones Memorial Student Scholarship

The Buckeye Art Therapy Association has chosen to honor Don Jones, ATR-BC, HLM, by the naming of our student scholarship, in his memory, the BATA Don Jones Memorial Student Scholarship. BATA confers this scholarship annually to a student enrolled in both an undergraduate and a graduate program, to permit their attendance at our annual conference.

As many are aware Don died on January 28, 2015 and the following are exerts from the obituary from the Columbus Dispatch: Donald L. Jones age 91, died. He was born in Towanda PA, graduated H.S. in Ithaca NY, attended Marietta College, SMU Perkins school of theology, and St. Paul's Seminary.

As a pacifist and conscientious objector he served 4 years with Civilian Public Service during WWII, in labor camps, army Guinea pig medical tests, and with psychiatric patients at Marlboro State Hosp. in NJ. Ordained as a Methodist Minister he pastored a church in Rossville KS 16 years, while working full-time at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka. He retired from Harding Hospital Worthington, Ohio after 20 years as Director of Adjunctive Therapy. There he set up dynamically oriented milieu therapy treatment, and an art therapy clinical internship. He was a pioneer in the field of Art Therapy, a founder and past president of the American Art Therapy Assoc. and Ohio organization (BATA) and taught classes at CCAD and at Capital University.

In retirement (‘retreaded’ he called it) he ministered two Unitarian congregations, did expressive art with people in neurological rehabilitation, hospice, prisons, with addiction counselors, teen group homes, wrote articles, contributed writing to journals and books and delivered presentations around the country. He helped establish WAAL and exhibited his paintings locally and nationally. In his art studio he painted, taught art, saw clients and students, many of whom he mentored over his lifetime. He was calm and compassionate, had a wonderful sense of humor, liked making puns and imaginative stories. His manner was healing and inspirational and he made a positive difference in countless lives. We invite you to join in contributing to the scholarship fund that bears his name at www.buckeyearttherapy.org/donations. Respectfully, Buckeye Art Therapy Association

LEGISLATIVE CHAIR’S REPORT Martha Stitt, ATR-BC, LPCC-S, LICDC-CS [email protected]

When I took over the Legislation Committee last Fall I knew it would be a big task. And, I was right. Don Cutcher, past Chair, did a good job orienting me and passing along many files, but there is still a lot to learn. During the last several years BATA has pursued several different avenues to obtain an independent license for art therapists. Unfortunately, none of these approaches resulted in any legislation being passed. They did not get passed because there were other forces in Ohio that worked against us, and our membership and community involvement was weak. In the past, I have had many art therapists tell me that they “hated politics” or that they “are not good at talking politics” and that they don’t understand why we need to be so “political”. Remember that every law and rule that shapes our society was enacted by the people...people like you and me. And, that there are laws we all like, and there are some that we disagree about. But we, the people, are in control of making and changing them. We need to be involved! So this is the year that ALL BATA members MUST get involved in legislation and politics whether we like it or not! This is the year that every member must put on their art aprons and work boots, join hands, and work together to get an art therapy license bill passed! Because not having this license is really holding all of us back professionally! We are treated like second class professionals, many cannot get jobs as art therapists, and we cannot work with the clients who need our services. And, if you have a job as an art therapist, you still need to get out and help us because you do not know what is just around the corner that may change requirements for your job. Having an art therapist license may help you keep your job or help you get a new job in the future. Working closely with our lobbyist, Joseph Russell, the legislation committee‘s push this year is to redraft the legislation and further clarify the details of the bill. We are planning to re-approach the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board to follow up on our initial presentation made in 2014. In addition, we are still exploring other licensing Boards that might work with us to obtain our goal of an independent license for art therapists. We are also continuing to work collaboratively with the Ohio Music Therapy Association because of the many parallels between our disciplines and associations. Joining our efforts together adds strength in numbers which will help both organizations toward our legislative goals. In the near future we will be contacting you, the members of BATA, to guide you in how to get out and talk to your State Representative and Senator. We will be giving you information about making these appointments, what to talk about when you meet with them, and reporting back to the Legislation Committee about how it went. Also, the Legislation Committee is seeking new members for the Committee. Please email me at ([email protected]) for more information and to make a difference!

Buckeye Art Therapy Association Regional Meeting: Introduction to Ecopsychology

Ecopsychology is a contemporary movement within psychology that recognizes a connection between mental health and the natural environment. It explores ways in which intentional connection with the natural world can contribute to increased psychological wellness, as well as resolution of environmental problems. This workshop provides an introduction to ecopsychological theory and practice. Participants will be guided toward self- reflection regarding their own “environmental identity,” as well as ways to integrate ecopsychology into their work as counselors.

Hints from Heidi Spring break is an amazing time of year for me. It is not a time for zealous parties at the beach, but instead a

time for walking in the woods and enjoying the return of life around me. I feel as if I can literally hear the world

waking up again. This year, my son and I toured Fallingwater, the Kaufmann Residence, a home designed by

architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. Seeing each room with its specific design, looking down over the

waterfall, and then hiking through Pennsylvania’s Ohiopyle park brought me back to nature. As I plan my

vacation and mini-vacations through the year, I plan to incorporate art in a variety of ways. Whether it is art-

making, a tour, a museum, or a festival, I plan to be creative in my return to these experiences which bring me

to nature and to art. As an art therapist, I not only enjoy creativity in my work, but I long to have art throughout

my life in other contexts as well. I encourage you, as you plan your downtime, to consider even small trips to

enjoying the arts. My journey with my son over spring break was not expensive. It took a few conversations

with colleagues, some internet searching, and planning reservations to prepare for a wonderful time. I encourage

you to take some time to bring art to your vacation time as well!

Supervision Opportunities

Supervision with Heidi Larew, PCC-S, LICDC-CS, ACS, NCC, ATCS and Dr. Jennifer Durham, LPCC-S, CTT, CTS [email protected] 330-984-3018 In the coming year, my colleague Jennifer Durham and I are still providing clinical supervision individually and in a group setting. We focus on ethical, safety, and clinical issues as well as professional development. Our emphasis is on creativity and community. Additionally, we have continuing education each month and are now happy to announce our CEUs are appropriate for art therapists, counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists. Occupational therapists and chemical dependency counselors have also been able to submit our CEUs. Many of our presentations are specific to clinical supervision and to ethics, allowing for clinicians to stay up-to-date on those specific topics as well. These CEU nights are on Fridays and are held in Hudson from 6-9:15 p.m. The cost is $50. The following day we provide supervision and consultation in Montrose (cost for each group member is $45 per hour, for individuals $65 per hour). Please let us know about two weeks to a month in advance if you are coming so we have enough handouts. If you show up at the last minute, we won't turn you away :-) but it does help us with planning if we know ahead of time. Looking forward to another year of learning and sharing with one another!
