Thank youThree things you cannot recover in life:

the “word” after it’s said, the “moment” after it’s missed, and the “time” after it’s gone. I just realized I have only a month left here, but it doesn’t mean I won’t come back.

If you ask me what I want to say thanks for: I can’t explain it all by the word, I want to thank everything that comes into my life, even bad things.

First I want to thank my parents, host family, friends, teachers and my destiny. I remember the first day when I arrived here, I looked around and everything was new to me, new people, new place, new friends, new home, and of course new weather. I heard about MN is super cold. First I was worried about it but I’m kind of “What Ever” kid, that means I’m don’t really care deeply about everything. I mean why do you have to be serious, sometimes you have to let go and everything will be much easier.

My friend asked me why did you want to be an exchange student, is it worth it, a couple grand you have to spend and you have just 10 months?

I told her “you can’t find experiences like this every day; if you want it, you have to come. I mean I can come here and live with my relative but I want to challenge myself. I want to use my destiny to pick a family, state and everything else. I believed whatever God sends to you, it’s always good for you one way or another.

I remember when I just got here maybe two weeks, my host parents asked me go to Carlton Fair. I met one girl she’s so chatty and kind, I think to myself if I know this girl she’ll be my close friend. We’ll get along with each other and that came true. She helped me with everything, she is always by my side even when I’m wrong. I want

to thank my lucky star that helped me to know her.

Thanks to all the teachers that helped me with everything, even if I don’t have their class. They are still kind and take good care of me. I’m so appreciative of that.

Sincerely, I want to thank this town of Carlton, MN. I have a lot of experiences and I have many memories here that I will never forget.

I always think to myself “how lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

International Cultural Exchange Services, ICES offers young people the adventure of a lifetime - the opportunity to discover themselves by discovering others. Through the process of learning new lan-guages and exploring other countries and cultures, ICES students develop a lifelong love of learning and the skills and knowl-edge necessary to thrive in and contribute to a society marked by increased diversity.

The Host Families and Local Coordinators who facilitate the exchange experience benefit as well. By gaining a new son or daughter, Host Families participate in the evolving process of promoting peace through mutual respect and understanding. Local Coordinators become community leaders and local ambassadors by promoting international awareness and expanding the perspectives of those around them.

1. What would you like the com-munity to know about your business?

We are the oldest and longest operating whitewater rafting company in Minnesota. We have available trips for individuals, groups, and businesses.

Our trips run every day of the week from roughly April through October, weather permitting. We leave our facilities at Scanlon and travel the St. Louis River to the Thomson reservoir. Generally we run two trips a day at 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Must be at least 11 years of age and just about anyone can participate. Do need to be physically able to maintain a seat in a raft and be able to paddle--this is not an amuse-ment park ride and does require active participation.

Minimum group size in early and late season is 4 people. Our online reservation system allows for individuals to book trips as available. Also coming this summer are scenic tours from Brookston to Hwy 2 on a much more gentle section of the St. Louis River and guided fishing trips between Scanlon and Thomson. Follow our social media and check our website for more information.

For details on who can go rafting, what to wear/bring, group sizes, and to book a trip online find us at www.minneso-tawhitewater.com. Call for group discounts. Follow us on Facebook under Minnesota Whitewater Rafting; Twitter @mnwhite-water218; Instagram #mnwhitewaterrafting; LinkedIn at Minnesota Whitewater.

2. Tell us the history of your busi-ness/organization and its connection to the Carlton community.

We were originally formed as Superior Whitewater 30+ years ago. Many employ-ees have been working as guides for almost all the 30 years of its existence. We have invested much in the location and equip-ment upgrades to further enhance the enjoyment and safety of our whitewater rafting experiences.

As part of your membership benefits, the Chamber regularly promotes interested businesses in a Business Spotlight Feature published in the Carlton Community News. This is a no-cost opportunity to widely share the news about your establishment and get the word out about what you have to offer. If you are interested in being fea-tured, please provide the information below. One feature will be included in each issue on a first-come, first-served basis and can include a photograph emailed to [email protected]. Submissions should be completed by the first week of each month.

From the Desk of Gwen CarmanSUPERINTENDENT

It has been an exciting and very busy month since the Carlton School Board voted on May 9th to bring a bond referen-dum question to our community.

In the months and days leading up to the vote on August 8th, the District will con-tinue to work hard to share as much infor-mation possible with the community and answer questions to help make sure each individual is able to cast an informed vote.

It has been a pleasure to see how involved and engaged the Carlton com-munity is when it comes to discussing how we focus on educating current and future students. Since the beginning of the process, the community has provided outstanding interest, input and feedback that the Board has taken into consideration at every step of the decision-making process.

We know that this same level of involve-ment will continue over the summer months. These next months are crucial and the Board hopes to find ways to talk with as many of you as possible. This is the time when all questions have to be answered, concerns can be addressed, and input and ideas can be voiced to make sure that the outcome of the referendum is best for current and future students as well as our broader community.

To make sure that all information is being shared and all questions are being addressed, the School Board will be hosting many several community meetings leading up to August 8th. We hope that you and others throughout the community will attend at least one of these meetings. The meetings and this process are a great oppor-tunity to learn more and speak directly with

School Board members regarding all aspects of the referendum. See the details of meet-ings to be held at South Terrace this sum-mer elsewhere in this Carlton Community Newspaper. You may also contact me via email ([email protected]) or phone (384-4225x113) with any questions, or if you would like to meet with me indi-vidually or with a group.

The School Board and community need to continue work together to help us make the best possible decision for our current and future students. The School Board and I promise to continue to be transparent and accountable as this process moves forward. We will will work to make sure we are shareing all information that we have devel-oped up to this point. We will also make sure we do everything we can to answer all questions that are brought to us, and consider all input and feedback. This is an important issue at an important time for our community. We hope you will be involved and take the time needed to listen, review, and ask questions to make sure Carlton makes an informed decision on August 8th.

I am beyond grateful to have the special opportunity lead a school district that is part of such an outstanding community. The Carlton School District leadership truly pri-oritizes what is in the best interest for our students and our community. I, along with the Board, look forward to speaking with as many members of the Carlton commu-nity as possible. With the school district and community working together, we can best achieve our mission of educating, empow-ering, and inspiring all Carlton learners!

Please take the time to learn the facts about the August 8th referendum

Peer Helpers and 5th graders at their transition day with speaker, Carl Energizer Olsen. The 5th graders went to the high school with the Peer Helpers for a tour at the end of the day.

We had so many people from the community come out to South Terrace Elementary to enjoy a night of community vehicles, basket raffles, bake sale treats, and a delicious taco dinner. Thank you to those who showed your support to our Early Childhood Programs and for all who donated and helped out! We couldn’t have asked for a better night!
