Volume 38, Issue 1 · January 2017
This New Year is the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in Europe. It was kicked off by Martin
Luther, so it is especially interesting to Lutherans. We plan to commemorate it in a variety of ways, but one of
the key ways that we have been planning coordinates with our Vibrant Faith Framework. Our plan is to focus
on Luther’s Small Catechism as a resource to pick up the Vibrant Faith understanding that home is church,
too. Parents, grandparents, mentors, and other significant adults have more influence over the formation of
faith in people than does a congregation.
Ulp! What kind of training and resources do these important adults have to help form faith in others? Well, their
own experience of the presence of God, God’s grace, and their faith are key. The Small Catechism is a
resource that gives us basic language to talk about that presence, grace, and faith to others. We all need
some help with this.
We were delighted when Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton came out with the same emphasis on the Small
Catechism for 1517 as we did. Coincidence or Holy Spirit? – you be the judge.
We are going to emphasize a piece of the Small Catechism each church season to walk us through this rich
source for encouraging faith and understanding. In January, we will focus on Holy Baptism, connecting with
the celebration of the Baptism of Jesus and our Baptism Milestone. Sunday, January 8, we will have a cross-
generational Sunday school activity that lifts up the gift of grace that calls us into faith and leads us into a life
of forgiveness and power for a Christian life.
As a way to introduce the Small Catechism, we are having a time for significant adults – grandparents, aunts,
uncles, parents, coaches, and mentors – to receive ideas on how this little book can help them express the
faith they have to young people. We call it Shepherd of Souls, because that is really what we are doing. It
takes place while Sunday school students are having their Christmas program practice Saturday, December
17, 9:00am. While children practice, adults will take a trip through the Small Catechism and practice how we
can use this to help ourselves and others mature and grow deeper in faith. No lectures, but some role playing
and practice from each of the sections of the catechism. Adults will leave with confidence to be witnesses to
faith. You don’t even have to bring your own catechism, we will give you the newest edition as a gift for all of
us who have been called to be Shepherds of Souls.

its generous donation to the project.
