Paterson Girls Basketball League

MISSION

The PGBL (Paterson Girls Basketball League) was started in 1985 for Paterson Girls ages 5-14 years old.

GOAL

The PGBL is set up to teach basic instructional basketball skills and life skills to league participants. To keep young girls off the streets of Paterson and provide a safe environment and hopefully to try and prevent teen pregnancies. The league operates based on the following:

Over 300 girls participate in the league every year

Over 90 adults volunteer to coach games and practice (2) two days week, Monday thru Friday and games are Wednesday/ Saturday (many are former league players who returned from college)

Coaches volunteer to teach life skills at least one hour a week.

City of Paterson Recreation Staff and Board of Education Students Volunteer Two Days a Week: 1. Set up gym 2. Monitor site activities 3. Clean up gym and breakdown Basketball equipment after games are over

The PGBL partners with City of Paterson agencies’ to provide community resources/services to families in need.

A certified trainer/ nutritionist, provides free training/nutrition for league players.

Certified pediatrician/ob-gyn does a seminar once a year for parents and players.

Over 3500 girls have participated in league since 1985

Four PGBL players play in the WNBA as well as numerous overseas players.

PGBL has received numerous Awards/Citations over the years, (Mayor’s Youth Month Awards, Paterson Youth Games, Paterson Rotary-Generation Greatness, Award Dinners, and Municipal Council Award to name a few.

Nicole Louden, leading scorer in New Jersey, started her Basketball career in the PGBL

In 2012, the league partnered with surrounding towns to expand the league and establish a more diverse and competitive league

To date, the league has over (23) Twenty Three Teams, grades 3rd

– 8th

grade

Every Wednesday and Saturday, the gym at P.S #9 is filled to capacity with parents, team sponsors, coaches, volunteers, and players

PGBL partners with the Board of Education to provide educational support to students academically. This season the Paterson Girls Basketball League partnered with Big Momma’s Team to raise money for Relay for Life. Each team received t-shirts sponsored by Paterson Recreation with all of the colors of cancer on the back. Proceeds from the door as well as cancer paraphernalia raised over $500 for cancer research. Big Momma (Carla Isom) was a coach in the Paterson Girls Basketball League for over 20 years and was a big part of helping young ladies get to and graduate from college. The Paterson Girls Basketball League had two alumni games this year. Previous players from the league came back and showed that they still have it. The games had fans from recent years come out and they were not disappointed. Each game was won by only one point. Thanks to the Paterson Division of Recreation, Board of Education, Parents Team Sponsors, and Volunteers, we look forward to continue providing recreation and skills development for Paterson Girls ages 5-14.
