Did you know

Since 1983 the FDA has rejected blood donations from

men who have had sex with other men any time after

1977 The policy has nothing to do with judgment

about sexual orientation but rather is based on the

documented risk of transmissible infections like HIV

This regulation was implemented at a time when there

was really no good test available to detect HIV and

there was a disproportionate percentage of gay men

who were infected with the virus said Dr Alyssa Zim-

an medical director of the UCLA Blood and Platelet

Center This was really the best means that we had

available to us to protect the blood supply and patients who would need

these transfusions

Ryan Yezak an organizer of the National Gay Blood Drive along with

others who want the FDA to revise its policy will take part in the Drive

when otherwise eligible gaybisexual male donors from across the coun-

try will visit various donation centers have their blood tested for HIV

and attempt to donate their blood

Dr Ziman says the current regulations have to do with the window be-

tween when someone can be exposed to a virus and when it is detecta-

ble Right now the window for HIV testing is approximately nine days For

other diseases that can be transmitted through blood transfusion such

as Hepatitis C the window is about seven days She adds that in addi-

makes it difficult to test samples and be sure they were free from HIV or

other viruses

Logistically it would be extremely difficult you would have to test do-

nors beforehand to make sure that theyve had no high risk behavior

and then have them come in and donate and test it again said Dr

Ziman The blood expires it has a very short shelflifeyou wouldnt

have time to hold onto the blood and the virus wouldnt replicate in the

same way in the sample as it would in the human body

You could come up with a really rational scientifically based approach

and definitely decrease the deferral period said Dr Ziman

Organizations that are involved in

blood banking across the United

States have supported this and the

suggestion has been to reduce it to a

one-year deferral period which applies

to many donor populations that en-

Clinical Laboratory Scientist Class of 2013mdash2014

It is the start of a new academic year for

both the Clinical Laboratories and the

new Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)

training class The students will be rotat-

ing through multiple sections of the

laboratory during their one-year training

at UCLA Here are the six new students

from the California State University

Dominguez Hillrsquos UCLA affiliated CLS

program

Candie Bautista

Candie grew up in the small Foothill community of Monro-

via California She began showing interest in the Biomedi-

cal Sciences upon entering college as a MORE (Minority

Opportunities in Research) scholar and participating in

numerous biomedical research projects both on and off campus

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Cal State

LA she applied to Cal State Dominguez Hills post-baccalaureate CLS

program Candie enjoys athletic activities such as snowboarding and

hiking as well as traveling abroad Five years from now she sees her-

self as a licensed CLS with a specialty in clinical (immuno)chemistry

and involved in some facet of the didactictraining aspect of the CLS

program such as becoming an associate professor or educational

coordinator

Eunice Kim

Eunice was born in California but moved to New York and

then Michigan before returning back to the sunny state

The career of a CLS seemed to fit every aspect of what she

wanted to do It not only allows her to help people and do

hands-on work but the career also fulfills opportunities for

leadership and management which are other interests of hers In her

spare time Eunice likes to cook bake sew paint and play music--

basically anything and everything that lets her release her creative

side In five years Eunice sees herself in a management position

where she can be hands-on and creative to find ways to better the

lives of patients and employees in the health system

Chi Wing (Sharon) Li

Sharon grew up in Hong Kong and moved to the United

States when she was 17 She has always been fascinated

by the amount of information one can discover from a

small drop of blood therefore Sharon decided to be a

CLS When she is not studying she enjoys baking and watching mov-

ies In five years Sharon is planning to pursue a specialist license

and also an MBA degree

Vicente Jayme Locsin

Vicente grew up in the Philippines in Manila until 4th

grade where he moved to Iloilo Vicente decided to pursue

a career in a field involving diseases after entering college

where he was introduced to pathology When he is not

studying he loves to eat Vicente often finds himself driving long dis-

tances and spending most of his money in the pursuit of pleasure for

the palate In five years he sees himself working in a lab or back at

school to learn more about pathology

Sharlynne Matty-Shear

Sharlynne grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania She ob-

tained a BS in biology from Clarion University of Pennsyl-

vania and then earned a DVM at Ohio State Universi-

ty After practicing for a few years she realized that veteri-

nary medicine was not an ideal fit so she began researching other

career options and found information describing the work of a

CLS This career path seemed like a perfect match for Sharlynnersquos

interests in medicine and clinical pathology In her spare time she

enjoys spending time with her husband David and her dog a Brussels

Griffon named Ellie Sharlynne also enjoys baking music

and theater

Samuel (Sam) Rosenthal

Samuel was born and raised in Los Angeles He was actual-

ly born in the UCLA Medical Center and grew up in Santa

Monica Samuel has always been interested in healthcare

After studying Biology as an undergraduate at UCSB he

became interested in the scientific techniques that he later learned

are utilized in clinical science In his spare time Samuel enjoys play-

ing golf cooking and producing music on his computer In five years

he hopes to have proven himself worthy of a management position at

a clinical lab
