FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

With what we’ve been entrusted...

let’s all fund the future! Stewardship Campaign 2011

Stewardship Campaign Kicks Off Sunday, September 12!What an exciting time to be a member of FPC! As we near the beginning of this year’s Stewardship Campaign, we are reminded of our Mission Statement and how we are encouraged to “live our lives faithfully, daily, where we are and with what we’ve been entrusted, to the glory of God.”

On Sunday, September 12, pledge information will be distributed during the worship service. Our goal is that each and every member participate in pledging their financial commitment, to the best of their ability, recognizing that each and every pledge counts and is important to the ministry of this church. Acting together, with God’s guidance and 100% partcipation from our church family, we live out our mission statement and can do so much to offer help and hope in our community and in the world!

Stewardship Kick-Off Sunday, September 12 10:15 amEveryone is invited to join in food and fellowship after the service!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

One of my favorite stories from grad school is of a music theory professor who, during my first class with him, told his class that he’d been giving the same tests in the class for the past 15 years. One of the students asked him, “Don’t you worry that someone from a previous class will give the answers to us?” Stoically, calmly, he replied, “No. I change the answers each year.” In listening to some of you, our congregation members, over the past few years, I think it’s time to start giving some new answers to the music we offer during worship.

Starting on Wednesday, September 22, at 7:00 (IMMEDIATELY following Wednesday worship!) we will begin a new music program which will focus on contemporary Christian music. I have already ordered several new contemporary songs which are not complicated and can be sung by either a small or large group. These songs have rhythm accompani-ment (guitar, bass, drums) and I think it would be cool for us to present them in worship throughout the fall. In addition, I have a few collections of contemporary Christian songs for solo voice, which may be of interest to some of you. OR – you may bring in your OWN song that you’d like to sing during worship, and we’ll find a good time & place to incorporate it into the worship service. In short, I’m thinking we have a number of different, new and exciting ways we can expand the musical offering at FPC, and together, I think we can make a lot happen. Let’s do it!

You know, I don’t speak or write often about music, because I feel that ideally, music speaks to each of us on its own, it needs no interpretation, clarification or justification. But in this case, I’m going to break my self-imposed silence for a bit. I think sharing music making at the church (and outside the church) is important for a couple reasons. First, I believe it gives us an opportunity to share the inherent genius with which God has blessed us. I feel we are at our strongest when we dare to dream, hope, aspire and nothing taps into those human traits so quickly and deeply as when we share the gift of music with each other. Second, in consideration of God’s remarkable bounty, our ability to create is the most beautiful and precious gift to us. As Creator, God shared the gift of life with us. Then, God shared with us that same creative spirit, impulse and capability. I hear God encouraging me, imploring me – “Now you go create something. Go and make something beautiful in the world.” This remarkable world and it’s wondrous creation belong to God. How blessed we are that God has empowered us to express our gratitude and praise through the gift of our own creative spirit!

Wednesday, September 22, 7:00-7:30, upstairs in the Music Room. Bring your talent, your willingness to share your creativity, your music…bring it all, and let’s let the Spirit move us in a new direction!

“Off and Running! ”

This year’s FPC Youth Ministry has gotten off to a great start. On Sunday,Aug. 22nd a group of 24 Sr. High students gathered for a great evening of food and fun at Sonic on S. 9th. On Sat, Aug. 28th there will be a similar gather-ing with the Mid-High Students at All-Star Lanes for some bowling fun.In addition to all this fun we will be giving the Youth Room a New Look this fall. Look in the bulletin and e-mail updates for fun opportunities to help us clean and decorate to make this space feel all new.I am personally thrilled to get to start meeting students and I am looking for-ward to a year of fun as we explore and grow in faith together.-Austin

So, how about a quick break to re-charge your batteries? d365 (www.d365.org) has some great daily devotional resources that allow you to spend a little time each day listening to God, spending time in the Bible, and reflecting on how God is active in your life. Find a time each day for 10 minutes and enjoy this time with you and God.

Social Justice & Mission @ FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Our Pledge Dollars at Work Near and Far...

Sunflower Adult Day Services offers support and respite for caregivers who have chosen to keep an older or disabled family member at home, while enhancing the quality of life for participants through a medically-supervised activity program that is therapeutic, meaningful and enjoyable. Sunflower currently serves 12-18 participants per day at its beautifully-renovated facility at 9th and Iron in downtown Salina. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the First Presbyterian Church for its generous ongoing support of Sunflower Adult Day Services. Since June 2008, the First Presby-terian Church has made five separate contributions to Sunflower totaling $4,010. These funds have been used to provide scholarships to those who cannot afford to fully pay for their own care. Many families are strug-gling to make ends meet. We believe that the benefits Sunflower provides to both participants and caregivers should be provided to all who need our services, regardless of ability to pay. In the first seven months of 2010 alone we have given families more than $16,000 in participation scholarships, all funded by generous local donors like First Presbyterian! - Tom Mulhern, Saline County Commission on Aging

FPC and ELO (Equal Learning Opportunity)First Presbyterian Church members are volunteering at Salina Central High School as “Homework Helpers.” They help students - especially those struggling in one or more classes - complete their homework assignments, study for tests and organize their thoughts for a speech or writing assignment.

The following is a list of FPC members & friends who have volunteered as Homework Helpers:

Herb HackenbergJames Hall, IIILori HallMelinda JettBill Knox

More volunteers are needed. If you would like to make a difference in students’ lives, and are able to work from 1:30 to 2:30 pm at least two days a month, call Bobbie Bengston at 827-2065 for more information. Training will be provided. Familiarity with specific subject matter is welcome but not required.

In response to the emergency need experienced by families impacted by the flooding in Pakistan, members and friends of FPC have contributed $640.00 to support the efforts of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (www.pcusa.org/pda) in the region! The Social Justice and Mission Committee of FPC has commit-ted to matching the first $500 donated by the congregation, which means that as a church, we will contribute $1040.00 to support men, women, and children in great need in Pakistan. If you would like to continue supporting people in need in Pakistan please make your check payable to FPC with “Pakistan” in the Memo line. In addition to our financial contributions, please continue to sur-round these people in your prayers during this time.
