General Membership Meeting December 14, 2007

The meeting was held at the Eddies Creekside Restaurant in Brecksville. There were 26 people in attendance. The meeting started at 9:45 p.m. after a great dinner. President Gary Hahn called the meeting to order. Secretary’s Report: N/A. Correspondence: Cathy received a letter from the WHWTCA’s Centennial committee on all of the events that are planned. They are asking for recipes do be submitted to them for a cookbook to be sold. If you want the information please contact her. President: Gary thanked everyone for coming and welcomed the visitors. Gary also spoke about what the Board has been working on with the upcoming show—the judges are pretty much lined up. Treasurer: Treasurer’s report was accepted as read and will be filed subject to audit. (Attached) Membership: Nothing at this time. 5 memberships were not renewed this past year. Show: Nothing new at this time. Rescue: Chris said that Marsha Snider is fostering a male that is going to be neutered next week. The Sandusky shelter called her about a male that has some skin problems. Chris also spoke about a puppy mill in Pennsylvania that was “going out of business” and there were 16 Westies. She called but they told her that they all were placed. Ways and Means: We still have some umbrellas for sale and tote bags. Contact Chris if you are interested in purchasing something. Chris sold raffle tickets for a globe with a holiday scene and they winner was Jeanette Layton. New Business: With the increasing cost of postage and printing (approx. $75.00 each mailing) the Board is asking if you can please contact Jason Roberts and have your Highlander sent to you electronically (via e-mail). The next meeting will be on February 8, 2008. Gary is going to check out and see about us going to the Ravenna Library. Carolyn Bales made a motion to adjourn, Donna Harris seconded. Meeting was adjourned @ 10:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Blacklock, Secretary

Rescue Report Our club currently has three male westies in foster care. Tucker is still with Marsha Snider—his story began last issue. Tucker has been neutered and has regrown most of his fur. His baths have been reduced and his ears are much better. Still some ways to go before he can be adopted unless he has no plans of leaving. He thinks it’s quite natural to nap on the couch with the other westies and has claimed his own spot on the bed. Melanie and Tony Hackenburg are fostering Toto who we received from the dog shelter in Sandusky. Melanie reports lots of baths and medications for him too. Bailey was surrendered to us by his family who could not afford his veterinary care. His skin looks very difficult to live in, but he is the sweetest little guy. The Quinlan family is fostering him. Again, lots of medicated baths, pills and a diet change. The foster moms plan to be at the next club meeting on February 8th with pictures and discussion of their care. The medical bills for them are coming from funds you have all helped to accumulate and I’d appreciate your attendance to see how it’s being put to use. For the first time I have asked for some monetary assistance from rescue funds that the national club is holding. I will keep you posted regarding that result. We all hope this is the beginning of a long lull. As is the case here, other clubs are reporting an increase in surrenders and a decrease in adopters. Tell people about rescue. Also keep warning people about the puppy mills which produce westies with health problems. Nope, no lull after all. On January 19, 2008, we came into possession of a young female westie (2-3 years-old) and three of her 10 week old puppies. They had been abandoned in a locked bathroom when the family moved and not found for 10 days. The mother is very thin and tired. She has been checked for heartworm and is clear. Her fur was thin, filthy, and matted. We are calling her Missy. She has a nice temperament and is spending a lot of time sleeping and recovering. She deserves a new home and a family who knows how to treat a westie princess. The puppies are small for their age but seem to be healthy and gaining energy after some steady meals and water. They are friendly and on the way to being paper trained. — Chris Schriber

Winter Grooming Tips During the winter months, the question of extending professional grooming sessions from eight weeks to ten or twelve weeks always comes up. The “theory” being that Westies need the warm of extra hair. Let’s look at that. First of all, Westies are indoor dogs unlike Huskies and Alaskan Mala-mutes who thrive on being out-doors with a coat that is adapted to a frigid climate. Think about it. Although our Westies love going out in the snow, rolling in it and chasing snowballs, they spend most of their time inside curled up in our laps or beside the fireplace. Skip-ping grooming sessions is a big mistake. The extra hair will only cause the Westie to pant because he is hot! Secondly, the more hair the Westie has the more time you need to spend on brushing and combing.

Here’s the grooming tip. Keep your Westie on a regular grooming schedule. During the winter months, use a #5F blade on the back coat, neck and rear. Continue to “clean off” the back of the ears with a #8-1/2 blade as well as on both sides of the rectum. As always, snip the hair off and around the penis on males and the vulva on bitches. Hygiene? You betcha! DO NOT...I repeat…DO NOT clipper the tummy. They need that hair for warmth when they do go out in the snow to play….sort of like long johns. Oops! Perhaps you are too young to remember long johns. Your Westie’s feet need more attention during winter than at any other time during the year. Keeping the pads free of hair mats is always important. Walking them on sidewalks that have been treated with chemi-cals to melt snow and ice get on their feet. If they have mats, they will lick their feet even if they don’t have mats it is essential that their feet be washed after a walk. Easy job. Put about a half inch of warm water in the bathtub or set tub if you have one. A quick “run and splash” will do the trick! Completely dry the feet using a hair dryer. Now comes the issue of putting sweaters and coats on dogs. In my opinion, a healthy Westie does not need a coat. They already have one! In fact, they have TWO...an outer coat and a soft, warm undercoat. The cute doggie outerwear is geared towards the owners to spend $$$$. Now be-fore you all get your shorts in a twist, there are legitimate reasons for putting a sweater or a coat on a Westie...an elderly Westie, a puppy who does not yet have an adult coat, an ill Westie, a single coated Westie, a show dog who has been stripped down to its BVD’s. Put-ting a sweater or a coat on the Westie will also save you time dry-ing out their furnishings when they come in from a romp in the snow, although I have to say on that issue…Westies…because of their double coats are “wash and wear”. Bring them in after a romp on the snow and towel them off. Boots on Westies? Unless medically indicated, let me not even go there! I urge you to keep your grooming appointments. Your groomer knows the appropriate way to groom your Westie for the winter months. Here’s another tip. When you are outside with your Westie and dressed for the weather, if you are not cold then neither is your Westie!
